The role of phenotypic plasticity in shaping ecological networks

Distribution of Tunisian beet wild relatives (Beta sp.) according to morphological characteristics and eco-geographical origin

Beta vulgaris subsp. maritima (L.) Arcang. and Beta macrocarpa Guss. are crop wild relative taxa belonging to the primary gene pool. They constitute a crucial gene reserve for enhancing cultivated Beta species (B. vulgaris subsp. vulgaris L.). Climate change poses a significant threat to genetic reservoir in Tunisia. We evaluated the morphological diversity of ten populations of B. vulgaris subsp. maritima and five populations of B. macrocarpa growing in different Tunisian bioclimatic and ecological areas using a set of 9 quantitative and 14 qualitative traits to promote the preservation and exploration of this germplasm. Variance component analysis of the quantitative data showed an important spectrum of variability, both within and between populations. The principal component analysis (PCA) allocated this wild Beta collection into three groups. G1 included the populations of B. macrocarpa that were characterized by the largest glomerules and heaviest seeds, while G2 included all B. vulgaris subsp. maritima populations except one, i.e., N1015 that clustered into G3, which was characterized by the highest values of leaf characters. Similarly, qualitative traits exhibited a high diversity level (H'index ≥0.6) for almost all characters. The PCA divided these 15 populations into three groups as well: G'1 concerned the island B. vulgaris subsp. maritima populations, characterized by prostrate growth habit and red inflorescences; G'2 included all B. macrocarpa populations characterized by erect-procumbent growth habit and very synchronous flowering pattern; and G'3 was formed by the mainland B. vulgaris subsp. maritima populations, characterized by erect growth habit and hairy, curly leaves. The observed eco-geographic distribution patterns suggest that these wild relatives are highly adaptable to diverse and even extreme conditions (salinity, heat, and drought), highlighting their potential as resilient gene sources for beet breeding under the challenges of accelerating climate change.

Developmental plasticity does not improve performance during a species interaction: Implications for species turnover

Species interactions can contribute to species turnover when the outcomes of the interactions are context dependent (e.g., change along environmental gradients). Plasticity may change this dynamic by altering the environmental tolerances of the species interacting. Here, we explored how the competitive interaction between two euryhaline fish, Poecilia reticulata and Poecilia picta, is influenced by acute and developmental responses to salinity. In Trinidad, P. reticulata is confined to freshwater despite being tolerant of brackish water. P. reticulata may fail to occupy brackish water because of reduced tolerance to salinity or because P. picta competitively excludes them, and developing in brackish water could alter the dynamics of either scenario. To test this, we compared the salinity tolerances of both species in the absence of competition, reared P. reticulata individuals in freshwater or brackish water, and tested the consequences of developmental plasticity in experiments in which P. reticulata competed against conspecifics or P. picta during acute exposure to freshwater or brackish water. We found that (1) P. reticulata has a weaker salinity tolerance than P. picta; (2) P. reticulata that developed in freshwater perform best when competing against P. picta in freshwater but perform poorly when competing against P. picta in brackish water, suggesting the species interaction is context dependent; and (3) developing in brackish water did not benefit P. reticulata in brackish water. Our results suggest that P. reticulata's freshwater range limit is in part a product of a lower salinity tolerance leading to a decrease in competitive performance in brackish water. Adaptive plasticity has been suggested to be a crucial part of the colonization process, yet nonadaptive plastic responses as found here can limit range expansion and reinforce range limits.

Variations in the plasticity of functional traits indicate the differential impacts of abiotic and biotic factors on the structure and growth of trees in tropical dry forest fragments

Abiotic and biotic factors have considerable impact on the plasticity of plant functional traits, which influences forest structure and productivity; however, their inter-relationships have not been quantified for fragmented tropical dry forest (TDF) ecosystems. We asked the following questions: (1) what are the variations in the plasticity of functional traits due to soil moisture availability in TDF fragments? (2) what are the roles of soil nutrients and forest disturbances in influencing variations in the plasticity of functional traits in the TDF fragments? and (3) how do the variations in the plasticity of functional traits influence the structure and productivity of TDF fragments? Based on linear mixed-effects results, we observed significant variations among tree species for soil moisture content (SMC) under the canopy and selected functional traits across forest fragments. We categorized tree species across fragments by principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering on principal components (HCPC) analyses into three functional types, viz., low wood density high deciduous (LWHD), high wood density medium deciduous (HWMD), and high wood density low deciduous (HWLD). Assemblage of functional traits suggested that the LWHD functional type exhibits a drought-avoiding strategy, whereas HWMD and HWLD adopt a drought-tolerant strategy. Our study showed that the variations in functional trait plasticity and the structural attributes of trees in the three functional types exhibit contrasting affinity with SMC, soil nutrients, and disturbances, although the LWHD functional type was comparatively more influenced by soil resources and disturbances compared to HWMD and HWLD along the declining SMC and edge distance gradients. Plasticity in functional traits for the LWHD functional type exhibited greater variations in traits associated with the conservation of water and resources, whereas for HWMD and HWLD, the traits exhibiting greater plasticity were linked with higher productivity and water transport. The cumulative influence of SMC, disturbances, and functional trait variations was also visible in the relative abundance of functional types in large and small sized fragments. Our analysis further revealed the critical differences in the responses of functional trait plasticity of the coexisting tree species in TDF, which suggests that important deciduous endemic species with drought-avoiding strategies might be prone to strategic exclusion under expected rises in anthropogenic disturbances, habitat fragmentation, and resource limitations.
