Abstract
This study aims to investigate glycolic acid (GA) as a final irrigant on push-out bond strength of fiber post and smear removal. Ninety mandibular premolars were stabilized with a silicone key and photographed, and canal cross-section was calculated by image processing software. Round canal morphology was selected. The specimens were divided into five groups (n = 18); 10%GA, 17%EDTA, NaOCl + 10%GA, NaOCl + 17%EDTA, and the control. Fifteen specimens were used for the push-out. Three specimens were evaluated using a scanning electron microscope after post space preparation. Two-way ANOVA and Chi-square were used for statistics. GA presented higher strength than EDTA (p < 0.05). The NaOCl + GA showed higher strength than the NaOCl + EDTA (p < 0.05). The highest values were observed in cervical and lowest in apical thirds (p < 0.05). The most failure type was between dentin and resin (p < 0.05). GA removed the smear in the post space including the apical third. The NaOCl + GA has superiority to NaOCl + EDTA on push-out strength. Glycolic acid improved the bond strength of fiber post when used as a final post space irrigant. The combination of NaOCl and glycolic acid did not negatively affect the bond strength and was more effective compared to the combination with EDTA. Glycolic acid improved the bond strength of fiber post when used as a final post space irrigant. The combination of NaOCl and glycolic acid did not negatively affect the bond strength and was more effective compared to the combination with EDTA.

Abstract
(1) Background: The objective of this in vitro study was to evaluate the impact of different etching times and ethanol pre-treatments on the immediate bond strength of a hydrophilic multi-mode universal adhesive (Clearfil Universal Bond Quick, Kuraray, UBQ) and on the consequent gelatinolytic activity of metalloproteinases (MMPs) on radicular dentin. (2) Methods: Sixty single-root teeth were selected and divided into four groups according to the adhesive protocol applied for fiber post cementation: (G1) 15 s H3PO4 application + UBQ; (G2) 30 s H3PO4 application + UBQ; (G3) 15 s H3PO4 application + ethanol pre-treatment + UBQ; (G4) 30 s H3PO4 + ethanol pre-treatment + UBQ. After adhesive procedures, fiber posts were luted into the post space with a dual-curing cement (DC Core, Kuraray) and light-cured for 40 s. To perform the push-out test and nanoleakage analyses for both coronal end apical areas, 1 mm slices were prepared, following a 24 h storage period in artificial saliva. Additionally, an in situ zymographic assay was conducted to explore endogenous MMP activity within the radicular layer. Results were statistically analyzed with ANOVA and Tukey post hoc tests. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. (3) Result: ANOVA revealed a statistically significant difference in push-out bond strength related to the pre-treatment variable but did not highlight any significance of etching time. Specimens pre-treated with ethanol wet bond application showed higher bond strength (p < 0.01). In situ zymography quantification analyses revealed that all tested groups, independently of etching time end ethanol pre-treatment, activated MMP gelatinolytic activity. A significant increase in MMP activity was detected for the 30 s etching time. However, ETOH pre-treatment significantly reduced MMP activity within the adhesive interface (p < 0.01). (4) Conclusions: The tested adhesive showed similar results regardless of the etching time protocol. The gelatinolytic activity of MMPs was observed in all the groups. Further investigations and extended follow-ups are required to validate the results of the present study in vivo.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aims of this study were to systematically review the literature and compare the relative effects of various luting agents on bonding between glass-fiber posts and root canal dentin in short- and long-term aging conditions. DATA/SOURCES The literature was electronically searched in PubMed, Embase, and Scopus. A manual search was performed by scanning the reference lists of the included studies. STUDY SELECTION Two reviewers independently conducted the selection of studies, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment. Pairwise meta-analyses were based on random effect models. Network meta-analyses were conducted within a frequentist framework with a multivariable random effects approach. The standardized mean difference and 95% confidence interval was calculated. RESULTS One hundred and eighteen studies were included and assessed the effects of five luting agents. For pairwise meta-analyses, in short-term aging conditions, a significantly higher bond strength of self-adhesive resin cement (SARC) compared to etch-and-rinse adhesive composite resin core material (ERCM) in the total, coronal, and middle regions. In long-term aging conditions, a significantly higher bond strength of ERCM compared to etch-and-rinse adhesive resin cement (ERRC) in all regions. Furthermore, SARC showed a significantly higher bond strength compared to self-etch adhesive composite resin core material (SECM) in the total, middle, and apical regions. For network meta-analyses, in the apical region, a significantly higher bond strength of SARC compared to ERRC in both aging conditions. CONCLUSIONS The SARC tended to be the most effective luting agent in bonding between glass-fiber posts and root canal dentin in short- and long-term aging conditions.

Abstract
AIM This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the effect of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitors on the bond strength of resin-cemented fibre posts to radicular dentin under an aged-loaded condition. MATERIALS AND METHODS Radicular dentin was prepared and irrigated by MMP inhibitor solution after root canal obturation in 60 extracted single-rooted teeth based on 6 groups: (1) 2% chlorhexidine (CHX) + loaded; (2) CHX + unloaded; (3) 0.5% benzalkonium chloride (BAC) + loaded; (4) BAC + unloaded; (5) 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) + loaded; and (6) EDTA + unloaded. After final rinsing, all specimens were sliced cross-sectionally and kept in a water bath for 12 months of ageing. Groups 1, 3, and 5 were subjected to cyclic loading. Push-out tests were conducted using a universal testing machine, and failure mode was examined. The data were analysed using 3-way analysis of variance and post hoc tests at α = 0.05. RESULTS BAC + unloaded demonstrated the highest mean bond strength (3.12 ± 0.18 MPa; P < .001), while the BAC + loaded and CHX + loaded groups showed a significantly lower push-out bond strength than their unloaded counterparts. Mixed adhesive-cohesive failure was the most common failure mode observed. CONCLUSIONS Without cycling loading, BAC was superior to CHX and EDTA in preserving the bond strength of resin-cemented fibre posts after 12 months of ageing. Loading significantly weakened the effectiveness of BAC and CHX in preserving the bond strength.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Although fiber posts are widely used in the restoration of endodontically treated teeth (ETT), their ideal cementation depth into the root canal is still debated in literature. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether the different intra-radicular insertion lengths of the fiber posts influence the fracture strength of ETT. Materials and Methods: A total of 10 permanent human lower incisors with straight roots of similar length and volume extracted for periodontal reason were sectioned 2 mm above the cement-enamel junction (CEJ) to a total length of 18 mm and endodontically treated in the same manner, then randomly divided into two groups of five each (Groups 1 and 2, n = 5). Two sound incisors, with no endodontic treatment, were used as the control group (Group 3, n = 2). After one week of storage in a humid environment, spaces for fiber post no. 1 (Reforpost, Angelus, Londrina, PR, Brazil) were prepared in the first two groups at a depth of 5 mm (Group 1) and 7 mm (Group 2), and the fiber posts were adhesively cemented using self-adhesive resin cement (Maxcem Elite, Kerr GmbH, Herzogenrath, Germany). After 7 days, the samples were vertically positioned and fixed in a self-curing transparent acrylic resin, up to 2 mm below the CEJ level, and mechanically tested in compression after another week of storage using a displacement-controlled testing machine up to each sample's fracture. The force-displacement curves were recorded for each sample, the means were calculated for each group and a statistical comparative analysis between groups was conducted. Results: Although no statistically significant differences between groups were observed, the highest mean fracture force (N) was recorded in Group 2 (1099.41 ± 481.89) in comparison to Group 1 (985.09 ± 330.28), even when compared to the sound, non-treated teeth (1045.69 ± 146.19). Conclusions: Within the limitations of this in vitro study, teeth where fiber posts were placed deeper into the root canal (7 mm) recorded slightly higher fracture forces in comparison with shorter lengths (5 mm). However, similar biomechanical performances obtained in the mechanical tests showed no statistical differences between the 7 mm and the 5 mm inserted posts.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to investigate the effect of the application method of 2% chlorhexidine (CHX) and its influence on the adhesion of fiberglass posts cemented with a self-adhesive resin cement. Materials and Methods Sixty human mandibular premolars were endodontically treated and divided into 5 groups (n = 12), according to the canal irrigant and its application method: 2 groups with conventional syringe irrigation (CSI)-2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) (control) and 2% CHX- and 3 groups with 2% CHX irrigation/activation-by passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), Easy Clean file, and XP-Endo Finisher file. Two roots per group were evaluated for smear layer (SL) removal by scanning electron microscopy. For other roots, fiber posts were luted using a self-adhesive resin cement. The roots were sectioned into 6 slices for push-out bond strength (BS) (7/group) and nanoleakage (NL) (3/group). Data from SL removal were submitted to Kruskal-Wallis and Student-Newman-Keuls tests (α = 0.05). Data from BS and NL were evaluated by 2-way analysis of variance and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Results For SL removal and BS, the CHX irrigation/activation promoted better values than CSI with CHX (p < 0.05), but it was not significantly different from CSI with NaOCl (p > 0.05). For NL, the lowest values were obtained by the chlorhexidine irrigation/activation groups (p < 0.05). Conclusions Active 2% CHX irrigation can be used to improve the post space cleaning and adhesion before fiber post cementation with self-adhesive resin cements.

Abstract
Objectives Application of matrix metalloproteinases inhibitors has been suggested to improve the durability of resin–dentin bonding. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), carbodiimide (EDC), and chlorhexidine (CHX) treatment on the push‐out bond strength of fiber posts to radicular dentin. Materials and Methods 24 extracted premolars were assigned randomly to 4 groups after root canal treatment and post space preparation (n = 6). In the first, second, and third groups, radicular dentin was treated with 1 ml of 5% DMSO, 0.3 M EDC, and 2% CHX, respectively. The fourth group (control) received no treatment. The root canals were primed with ED primer II, and the fiber posts were cemented with Panavia F2.0. In each group, half of the specimens were subjected to the push‐out test and the other half to 3000 thermal cycles before testing. Data were analyzed using two‐way analysis of variance via SPSS version 20 (p < .05). Results Among the nonthermocycled specimens, the values of push‐out bond strength were observed in the control, EDC, CHX, and DMSO groups, in decreasing order. Among the thermocycled specimens, the values were observed in the control, EDC, DMSO, and CHX groups in decreasing order. Thermocycling had a significant adverse effect on the push‐out bond strength (p = .015), but the effect of material (p = .375), and the interaction effect of material and thermocycling (p = .998) were not significant. Conclusions Application of CHX, DMSO, and EDC had no significant effect on the bond strength of fiber posts to radicular dentin.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The present study aims to determine the effect of different post-space final irrigants ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), a mixture of Doxycycline citric acid and detergent (MTAD), Riboflavin (RF) and Pineapple peel extract (PPE) on the bond integrity of GFPs bonded to radicular dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS Crowns of forty human mandibular premolars teeth were sectioned up to cementoenamel junction CEJ. Root canal treatment was performed. Gates Glidden drills were used to retrieve gutta-percha from the canal. All the specimens were randomly divided into four groups based on the final irrigant used. Group 1 (NaOCl with EDTA), group 2 NaOCl+ MTAD, group 3 NaOCl+RF and group 4 NaOCl+PPE. Cementation of glass fiber posts (GFPs) was performed using self-etch dual-cure resin cement. Sectioning was performed using a slow-speed saw from the coronal, middle, and apical third under constant water irrigation. A universal testing machine was used to assess push-out bond strength (PBS) and failure mode was evaluated using a Stereomicroscope at 40x magnification. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey multiple comparison tests were used for statistical analysis (p=0.05). RESULTS Group 4 (2.5% NaOCl+ PPE) displayed the highest PBS at all three root levels (Cervical: 11.22±0.74 MPa, Middle: 8.99±0.97MPa, and Apical: 6.00±0.88 MPa). However, Group 1 (2.5% NaOCl+17% EDTA) demonstrated the lowest EBS (Cervical: 9.25±0.17 MPa, Middle: 7.01±1.84 MPa, and Apical: 4.41±0.17 MPa). Inter-group comparison displayed that PBS to be comparable between group 1 and group 3 (2.5% NaOCl+ Riboflavin) (Cervical: 9.74±0.41 MPa, Middle: 7.44±1.18 MPa, and Apical: 4.21±0.05 MPa) (p > 0.05). Whereas, group 2 (1.3% NaOCl+ MTAD) (Cervical: 9.32±1.36 MPa, Middle: 7.17±1.75 MPa, and Apical: 4.85±0.19 MPa) and group 4 demonstrated comparable values of PBS (p >0.05). CONCLUSION Pineapple peel extract and a mixture of Doxycycline citric acid and a detergent when used as a final irrigant demonstrated better bond integrity of GFPs to radicular dentin at all three levels coronal, middle and apical.

Abstract
Systematic review and network meta-analyses were performed to answer the question: Do intraradicular chemical pretreatments affect the bond strength of the adhesive interface between dentine and fiber post cements? A literature search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS, BBO, and Cochrane Library in October 2018 (updated September 2021). In vitro studies that compared the bond strength assessed by push-out tests following at least two dentine chemical treatments prior to fiber post cementation were included. Risk of bias was evaluated. A random-effects Bayesian-mixed treatment comparison model was used to compare push-out bond strength of different chemical pretreatments. SUCRA (surface area under the cumulative ranking) analysis was performed to rank the pretreatments. After removing duplicates and screening titles and abstracts, 61 studies remained. SUCRA analysis showed that the best bond strength values for self-etch, etch-and-rinse, and self-adhesive cements were ethyl acetate (SUCRA: 99.8%), low concentration NaOCl (SUCRA: 83.4%), and grape seed extract (SUCRA: 97.6%), respectively. According to the SUCRA rankings, ethanol was in a good position for all adhesive strategies (SUCRA: 78.6%). The use of chemical pretreatments in intraradicular dentine of endodontically treated teeth depends on the adhesive and cementation strategy. The pretreatment generally associated with the highest bond strength was ethanol.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the effect of different photosensitizers activated by low-level laser therapy on EBS of glass fiber post to radicular dentin. METHODS This study was conducted at King Saud University from January 2021 to March 202. Fifty maxillary central incisors were sanitized and decoronated. NiTi was used for mechanical instrumentation of the canal. All canals were shaped, cleaned and obturated with gutta-percha. Post space was made using peso reamers. Four Division of groups were made according to photosensitizers used (n=10). Group-1: MBP at 100mg/l, Group-2: Phycocyanin at 100mg/l, Group-3: CP at 500mg/l, and Group-4 toluidine blue photosensitizer (TB). Lasers were used for activation of photosensitizers. In Group-5 samples were irrigated using sodium hypochlorite NaOCl +17% EDTA. Posts were cemented and teeth sectioned into apical, coronal and middle. For EBS all samples were subjected to a universal testing machine. Fracture patterns were analyzed using stereomicroscope. To compare EBS at different segments One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey multiple comparison tests (p=0.05) was performed. RESULTS The maximum value of EBS was shown in Group-2 radicular canal treated with CP with 17% EDTA at all three levels cervical (8.61±1.32 MPa), middle (6.81±0.73 MPa), and apical (5.51±0.25 MPa). Similarly, the minimum value of EBS was displayed in Group-5 canal irrigated with 2.25% NaOCl +17% EDTA (control) coronal (6.10±1.77 MPa), middle (5.11±0.75MPa), and apical (3.60±0.94 MPa). Intragroup assessment disclosed a decrease in EBS from cervical one-third to apical one-third in all groups. CONCLUSION P, CP, and TB along with EDTA have the potential to be used as canal disinfectant and favors the bonding of GFP to radicular dentin using self-etch adhesive resin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to compare the push-out bond strength of fiber posts by using two different resin cement after the treatments of post space with photodynamic therapy, gaseous ozone and conventional disinfection solution. METHODS The root canal treatments of one hundred maxillary incisors were performed. The roots were randomly distributed into 5 groups (n = 20). NaOCl of 2.5% + EDTA of 17% in group 1, CHX of 2% in group 2, toluidine blue + diode laser as the photodynamic therapy (PDT) in group 3 and ozone in group 4 were applied to the post spaces. Group 5 was washed with distilled water as control group. Each group was divided into two subgroups according to the adhesive types and the posts were bonded by using RelyX and LinkForce. The bond strength was calculated using the push-out test method. Resin tag formations were photographed with SEM. The push-out bond strength was analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey tests (p = .05). RESULTS The PDT group, which showed the highest PBS among the groups bonded with LinkForce at all levels, was significantly higher than Ozone and DW groups (p<.05). NaOCl and ozone treatments provided the highest PBS among the groups bonded with RelyX for all levels and this difference was significant according to the DW group (p < .05). CONCLUSION Post space treatments improved the bond strength of the fiber post in both types of resin cement.

Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to compare the topical application of chlorohexidine (CHX) and Metronidazole (MTZ) gels, individually and in combination in patients with gingivitis for up to 12 weeks follow-up. Methods: The clinical trial was conducted at Liaquat University of Medical Health Sciences (LUMHS) Jamshoro and Hyderabad, Institute of Dentistry from 1st March 2019 to 1st March 2020. Patients were selected based on inclusion criteria. Out of 125 screened patients, ninety-nine patients agreed to participate in the study. At the beginning of study all patients were assessed for gingival inflammation by using gingival index (GI) (Loe and silness, 1963). Scaling root planning (SRP) was performed in all patients. Subjects were randomly selected in three groups (n=33 each). In Group-A CHX gel was applied, Group-B Metronidazole gel was applied and the combination of two was applied to patients of Group-C. Patient follow up was done and gingival parameters were assessed at baseline, fourth week and twelve weeks. Apart from the clinical evaluation, a subjective evaluation was also undertaken. Significance level of 0.05 and a desired study power of at least 80% was estimated. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test for comparison was used within groups. Results: A significant improvement in gingival scores was noted in all groups from baseline. At 4 weeks CHX (1.25±0.21) MTZ (1.81±0.38) CHX+MTZ (1.29±0.34) compared to baseline CHX (2.77±0.24) MTZ (2.84±0.54) CHX+MTZ (2.74±0.31) demonstrated substantial improvement (p<0.001). However, gingival scores showed inclination at 12 weeks CHX (1.18±0.41) MTZ (1.21±0.48) CHX+MTZ (1.11±0.14) with no significant difference to week 4 (p>0.001). Conclusion: Local MTZ gel and MTZ+CHX gel showed effectiveness similar to CHX gel application adjunct to scaling and root planning in the treatment of gingivitis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This systematic review of in vitro studies investigated the influence of the post-space treatment used to remove the smear layer on the bond strength of the post to root canal dentin. METHODS AND MATERIALS In vitro studies included in this study were identified from PubMed/MEDLINE, Lilacs, and Scopus databases up until March 2019, without limits on publication year or language. Two reviewers independently selected the studies based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, extracted the data, and evaluated the risk of bias of all studies. A random effects model was used for pairwise meta-analyses (control vs. post-space preparation groups) at a significance level of p<0.05. RESULTS Of the 2,832 potentially eligible studies, 453 studies were selected for full-text analysis, and 75 were included in this systematic review. Only one study was considered to have a low risk of bias. Overall, post-space treatment significantly improves the bond strength to root canal dentin (p<0.00001). CONCLUSION Post-space treatment has a positive influence on the bond strength of the post to root canal dentin. In this review, the post-space treatments that improve the adhesive resistance of the post were ethanol, sodium hypochlorite, and ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (NaOCl + EDTA), NaOCl + EDTA + ultrasound, erbium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet laser (Er:YAG laser), neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet laser (Nd:YAG laser), and diode laser.

Abstract
Clinicians often face dilemmas regarding the most appropriate way to restore a tooth following root canal treatment. Whilst there is established consensus on the importance of the ferrule effect on the predictable restoration of root filled teeth, other factors, such as residual tooth volume, tooth location, number of proximal contacts, timing of the definitive restoration and the presence of cracks, have been reported to influence restoration and tooth survival. The continued evolution of dental materials and techniques, combined with a trend towards more conservative endodontic-restorative procedures, prompts re-evaluation of the scientific literature. The aim of this literature review was to provide an updated overview of the existing clinical literature relating to the restoration of root filled teeth. An electronic literature search of the PubMed, Ovid (via EMBASE) and MEDLINE (via EMBASE) databases up to July 2020 was performed to identify articles that related the survival of root filled teeth and/or restoration type. The following and other terms were searched: restoration, crown, onlay, root canal, root filled, post, clinical, survival, success. Wherever possible, only clinical studies were selected for the literature review. Full texts of the identified articles were independently screened by two reviewers according to pre-defined criteria. This review identifies the main clinical factors influencing the survival of teeth and restorations following root canal treatment in vivo and discusses the data related to specific restoration type on clinical survival.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the present study was to assess post space disinfection using different irrigants and their effect on radicular dentin bond to SERC. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty single rooted mandibular 2nd premolars were collected and disinfected. All samples were decoronated maintaining root length of 12 mm and embedded vertically in acrylic resin. Shaping of the canal was performed using reciprocating system. Canals were dried using paper points and obturated with gutta percha via lateral condensation. Peso-reamers were used to create post space up to 10 mm. The post space was irrigated with 1% NaOCl before being randomly allocated into four groups (n = 10) according to different methods of canal disinfection. Samples in group 1 were subjected to photoactivated disinfection (PAD), group 2 irrigated with ethanol based propolis group 3 disinfected using ozone and group 4 irrigated with 2.25 % NaOCl with 17 % EDTA and ECL. GFP was fitted using SERC. Each sample was cut into 1 mm from coronal, middle and apical and subjected to pushout bond strength (PBS) via universal testing machine. Fracture analysis were confirmed by stereomicroscope at 40x magnification. For comparison of means, Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey multiple comparison test was used maintaining the level of significance at p < 0.05. RESULTS The highest PBS at all three levels were found in group 4, canal disinfected with 2.5 % NaOCl with 17 % EDTA and ECYL. Whereas, the lowest PBS was observed in group 1. Inter group comparison, prosthetic space disinfected with propolis extract showed no significant difference to group 4 canal disinfected with 2.5 % NaOCl with 17 % EDTA and ECYL at all three levels (p > 0.05). Intra group comparison in all experimental groups showed no significant difference was noted in coronal and middle thirds of group 1, group 2 and group 3 respectively (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION 2.5 % NaOCl with EDTA and ECL treatment (group 4) remains the gold standard when used as a final canal irrigant. Propolis can be used as potential irrigant for canal disinfectant provided if the composition becomes standardized.

Abstract
Adhesion science is one of the greatest contributions to restorative dentistry. Adhesion not only established the current principles of tissue preservation, but also allowed for the production of more hermetic and long-lasting restorations. Although adhesive strategies are routinely used in most clinical situations, adhesion to root dentin is still a major challenge. The presence of humidity together with less intertubular dentin are factors that limit the adhesive potential of root dentin. This situation is more unfavorable in endodontically treated teeth prepared for prefabricated or custom-made intraradicular posts; these procedures may alter the mechanical properties of teeth by modifying the viable dentin surface for adhesion. Also, contaminants deposited on the dentin surface are difficult to remove through conventional techniques. Moreover, root canal morphology has a very unfavorable C-factor, bringing undesirable effects resulting from polymerization contraction of resin-based materials. However, the differences between coronal and root dentin are not a barrier for dentin adhesion. Standardization of procedures and care during clinical steps are fundamental to the success of adhesion to coronal or intraradicular dentin. Thus, it is essential to know the anatomy of the root structure, the factors that interfere with intraradicular adhesion, as well as the current adhesive materials and techniques.

Abstract
Objectives: Calcium hypochlorite (Ca(OCl)2) is currently used as a root canal irrigant. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of calcium hypochlorite and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), as root canal irrigants, on the bond strength of posts cemented with a self-adhesive resin cement. Materials and Methods: In this in-vitro study, 40 maxillary central incisors with similar root lengths were decoronated. The teeth were randomly divided into five groups based on the irrigant used: Group 1: normal saline (control), Group 2: 2.5% sodium hypochlorite, Group 3: 5.25% sodium hypochlorite, Group 4: 2.5% calcium hypochlorite, and Group 5: 5% calcium hypochlorite. Root canal treatments were performed with Gates-Glidden drills and the irrigant corresponding to each group was used upon changing the file and for irrigating the post space. Then, glass fiber posts were cemented by BisCem self-adhesive cement. After applying 1,000 thermocycles at 5–55°C, three samples of the mid-section of each root were prepared: one for scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the rest for push-out testing. Data were analyzed with SPSS 23 software using one-way analysis of variance and post-hoc Tukey’s test. Results: The highest and lowest mean bond strengths were recorded in groups 5 and 1, respectively. There was a significant difference between the 5% calcium hypochlorite group and the other groups (P<0.001). The difference between the other groups was not significant. Conclusion: The use of 5% calcium hypochlorite with self-adhesive cements increases the push-out bond strength of fiber posts to radicular dentin.

Abstract
Background. Severely damaged teeth do not have adequate structure to support the composite crown; therefore, use of the canal space has been suggested to increase retention. Furthermore, the effect of post space irrigation protocols on the fracture resistance of the primary anterior teeth has not definitely been studied in postoperative modalities. This study compared the fracture resistance of restorations of primary anterior teeth following irrigation of the post space with sodium hypochlorite and chlorhexidine with and without application of burs.
Methods. Ninety-four extracted primary anterior teeth were selected. Root canal treatments were carried out, 4 mm of the post space was left empty and 1 mm was regarded as a bed. The post space was prepared with and without a bur and the irrigation procedures were carried out with 0.2% chlorhexidine and 2.5% sodium hypochlorite solutions. Composite posts were inserted into the canals and the crowns were restored. Following composite etching and light-curing, the fracture resistance of the restored teeth was determined by a universal testing machine.
Results. In the sodium hypochlorite group, fracture resistance of the teeth was 376.8±107.29 N and 475.5±186.89 N without and with bur preparation, respectively. For chlorhexidine protocol, the values were 370.88±175.46 N and 430.85±178.22 N without and with bur preparation, respectively. The effect of irrigating material was not significant; however, the bur and irrigating preparation significantly increased the fracture resistance of the restored teeth (P=0.02).
Conclusion. Post space irrigation with 0.2% chlorhexidine or 2.5% sodium hypochlorite did not significantly affect the fracture resistance of primary anterior teeth in the post treatment modality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This in vitro study aimed to compare the efficacy of irrigants using various irrigation activation methods to the push-out bond strengths of fiber post to root canal luted with self-adhesive resin cement (SARC). METHODOLOGY Forty-eight decoronated human canines were used. The specimens were divided into four groups corresponding with the post-space irrigation process and were treated as follows: distilled water (DW) (Control) group received 15 mL of DW; sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl)+ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) group was treated with 5 mL of 5.25% NaOCl, 5 mL of 17% EDTA, and 5 mL of DW; passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) group was treated with 5 mL of 5.25% NaOCl, 5 mL of 17% EDTA, and 5 mL of DW, and each irrigant was agitated with an ultrasonic file; and laser activated irrigation (LAI) group was treated with 5 mL of 5.25% NaOCl, 5 mL of 17% EDTA, and 5 mL of DW, and each irrigant was irradiated with Nd: YAG laser. Fiber posts were luted with SARC, and a push-out test was performed. Data was analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and Tukey HSD test. RESULTS The bond strength values for the groups obtained were as follows: Control (10.04 MPa), NaOCl+EDTA (11.07 MPa), PUI (11.85 MPa), and LAI (11.63 MPa). No statistically significant differences were found among all experimental groups (p>0.05). The coronal (12.66 MPa) and middle (11.63 MPa) root regions indicated a significantly higher bond strength compared with the apical (9.16 MPa) region (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Irrigant activation methods did not increase the bond strength of fiber post to canal.

Abstract
Introducción: el tratamiento endodóntico es muy solicitado para preservar las piezas dentales, así como la utilización de pernos de fibra cuando el remanente coronario no es el adecuado para recibir una prótesis coronaria, permitiendo de esta manera reconstruir el muñón dental para la posterior colocación de la restauración definitiva. Objetivo: identificar tanto el tratamiento de superficie de pernos de fibra como el irrigante radicular idóneos para conseguir una cementación adecuada; así como conocer cuál es el tratamiento de superficie que produce menos desintegración de las fibras del perno de fibra. Materiales y métodos: se incluyeron 47 artículos publicados en inglés, durante los últimos 20 años, teniendo en cuenta que los mismos se obtuvieron hasta octubre del 2018. Conclusiones: previa la cementación de pernos sean estos de fibra o de cuarzo es indispensable realizar tratamiento de superficie para así mejorar la adhesión, estos pueden ser químicos o físicos, los que ofrecen mejor resultado sin alterar de manera significativa la estructura del mismo es el enarenado con partículas de diamante sintéticas de 1-3 µm seguido de silanización y dentro de los químicos H2O2 al 10% por 1 min seguido de silano. Para obtener mejores resultados se debe accionar el silano a una temperatura de 80°C. En cuanto a protocolos de irrigación depende del sistema de cementación que se vaya a emplear EDTA 18% + Hipoclorito de sodio al 5,25% o EDTA 18% + clorhexidina al 2% cuando se va emplear un cemento autoadhesivoy NaOCl al 11% cuando se utilice el acondicionamiento ácido de lavado y secado.

Abstract
PURPOSE Universal adhesives are new systems that can be used in etch-and-rinse (ER) and self-etch (SE) modes. This in vitro study evaluated the bonding performance of a universal adhesive in ER mode and SE mode with two irrigants for luting fiber posts in the root canal. MATERIALS AND METHODS After separation of the roots from the crowns of 56 maxillary central incisors and endodontic treatment, 10-mm post space was prepared. The roots were divided into seven groups according to irrigant/adhesive protocol used for cementation of posts: 1) sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) irrigant + acid etching + One-Step Plus, 2) NaOCl + Clearfil SE Bond (CSE) and 3) EDTA + CSE as controls; 4) NaOCl + All-Bond Universal (AB) in ER mode, 5) NaOCl + AB in SE mode, 6) EDTA + AB in SE mode, 7) distilled water + AB in SE mode. Posts were luted using Duo-link. The bonded roots were sectioned into microslices. After push-out bond strength (PBS) testing, data in MPa were analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Tukey test (α = 0.05). RESULTS PBS was significantly affected by irrigation/adhesive protocol and root region (P<0.05), with no significant interaction of these factors. PBS of ABU in ER mode with NaOCl and in SE mode with NaOCl or EDTA was comparable to that in the respective controls. The highest and lowest PBSs were recorded for ABU in the SE mode with EDTA (15.38 ± 4) and NaOCl (10.17 ± 3.5), respectively. PBS of AB in ER and SE modes was similar when distilled water was used in the SE mode. CONCLUSION Adhesive performance of AB in the ER mode was comparable to or different from the SE mode, depending on the irrigant used to prepare post space in SE approach. AB could behave as a reliable bonding for post cementation.

Abstract
The presence of residues within the root canal after post-space preparation can influence the bond strength between resin cement and root dentin when using fiberglass posts (FGPs). Currently, there is no consensus in the literature regarding what is the best solution for the removal of debris after post-space preparation. This systematic review involved "in vitro" studies to investigate if cleaning methods of the root canal after post-space preparation can increase the retention of FGPs evaluated by the push-out test. Searches were carried out in PubMed (MEDLINE) and Scopus databases up to July2017. English language studies published from 2007 to July 2017 were selected. 475 studies were found, and 9 were included in this review. Information from the 9 studies were collected regarding the number of samples, storage method after extraction, root canal preparation, method of post-space preparation, endodontic sealer, resin cement, cleaning methods after post-space and presence of irrigant activation. Five studies presented the best results for the association of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA), while in the other 4 studies, the solutions that showed improved retention of FGPs were photon-induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS), Qmix, Sikko and EDTA. The results showed heterogeneity in all comparisons due to a high variety of information about cleaning methods, different concentrations, application time, type of adhesive system and resin cements used. In conclusion, this review suggests that the use of NaOCl/EDTA results in the retention of FGPs and may thus be recommended as a post-space cleaning method influencing the luting procedure.

Abstract
Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of timing of coronal preparation on the pushout bond strength of fiber postluted with resin cement in the root canal. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 48 mandibular human premolars were selected in a 3-week range. After root canal treatment and postspace preparation, a post #2(Angelus, Brazil) was cemented into the canal by a resin-based cement (Bifix SE, VOCO, Germany). Cylindrical resin composite cores were built on the posts. Then, the specimens were divided into 4 groups of 12 specimens each: one control group without core preparation and 3 experimental groups with core preparation that was done 15 min, 1 h, and 24 h after postcementation. One day after postcementation, each root was sectioned into 3 segments. Each slice was connected to universal testing machine. The load was applied at the speed of 0.5 mm/min till failure happened. The collected data were analyzed (SPSS/PC 20.0; SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) using two-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey test at P < 0.05 level of significance. Results: Mean shear bond strength differences among interventional groups were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Nevertheless, there were significant differences among root regions (P < 0.001). Conclusion: It was concluded that core preparation and its timing does not affect adversely retention of fiber post and bond strength is higher in the cervical segment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Longevity of post-retained restoration is highly depended on bonding stability of fiber post (FP) to root dentin. This study evaluated the effect of different antibacterial/adhesive approaches on bonding durability of FPs luted into root canal with a self-etch cement. MATERIAL AND METHODS Seventy-two human maxillary central incisor roots were divided into six groups after endodontic treatment, based on the antibacterial/adhesive treatments as follows: 1)ED primer II (ED, control); 2) Clearfil Protect Bond (PB); 3) 2% chlorhexidine (CH) pretreatment + ED primer II (CH+ED); 4) CH-incorporated into ED primer II (CH in ED); 5) CH pretreatment + Clearfil SE Bond (CH+SE); and 6)CH-incorporated into SE primer (CH in SE). The FPs were then cemented using PanaviaF2.0. After micro-slicing the bonded root dentin, a push-out bond strength (PBS) test was performed immediately or after two years of water storage. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and post hoc Tukey tests (α=0.05). RESULTS The effects of antibacterial/adhesive approach, time and interaction between the main factors were significant (p=0.01). There was no significant difference between the immediate groups, except between the CH+ED group (the lowest PBS) and PB and CH in SE groups (the highest PBS) (p≤0.03). After aging, the same difference was observed (p≤0.02); the control group exhibited a significantly lower PBS compared to the other groups (p≤0.01), except for CH+ED. Aging significantly decreased PBS of all the groups (p≤0.01); the control group exhibited the highest reduction. CONCLUSIONS CH incorporated into self-etch primers or in pretreatment step prior to two-step self-etch adhesive and antibacterial adhesive could improve bond stability of self-etch cemented fiber post. However, none of these was capable of inhibiting bond degradation over time. Key words:Push-out bond strength, Fiber post, Chlorhexidine.

Abstract
Objective: The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of irrigating agents on push-out bond strength of resin postcemented with various adhesive systems at different radicular dentin sections. Materials and Methods: Sixty single-rooted premolar teeth were root canal treated, subsequently decorated at cementoenamel junction. The endodontic postspace was irrigated with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) for Group A (n = 30) and Group B (n = 30), respectively. The sample from each group was subdivided into three groups (10) according to luting protocol of etch-wash, self-etch, and self-adhesive. Individual teeth with cemented resin postsamples were sectioned into coronal, middle, and apical segments. Subsequently, subjected for pushout bond strength test by applying a load at 0.5 mm/min speed. The data were analyzed by three-way analysis of variance and Tukey comparison test at a significant difference level of 0.05. Results: The coronal section with 5.25% NaOCl irrigation and self-etch luting protocol provided the highest push out strength at 16.282 Mpa. The etch-wash luting protocol in both irrigations showed the lesser bond strength at 8.273 and 8.493 MPa, respectively, in coronal section. Conclusions: The self-etch adhesive system showed better push out bond strength and 17% EDTA had a negative influence on self-etch bond strength. The coronal sections had highest bond strength in comparison with apical radicular dentin sections.

Abstract
This study identifies the most common microorganisms present in type III gold cast posts related to pulpal disease and evaluates the sterilization/disinfection method before cementation in the root canal. Forty-five type III gold cast posts were aseptically collected in sterile sealed plastic bags and taken to the microbiology laboratory to carry out the study: fifteen cast posts had no treatment, fifteen were disinfected (immersion in 70% alcohol during 15 minutes), and fifteen were autoclaved at 121°C for 15 minutes by using saturated steam under 15 psi pressure. By using a two-proportion z-test, the difference was statistically significant (p > 0.05) and demonstrates that, in spite of the aseptic pattern used in the cast post collection and laboratory procedures, some cast posts arrive contaminated at the consulting office. The disinfection process worked out in a high percentage and demonstrated that the sterilization by autoclaving eliminated completely the pathogenic microbiota without affecting the cast post shape and integrity that could compromise their final fitting.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study was undertaken to investigate whether use of an adhesive penetration enhancer, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), improves bond stability of fiber posts to root dentin using two two-step etch-and-rinse resin cements. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty human maxillary central incisor roots were randomly divided into 4 groups after endodontic treatment and post space preparation, based on the fiber post/cement used with and without DMSO pretreatment. Acid-etched root dentin was treated with 5% DMSO aqueous solution for 60 seconds or with distilled water (control) prior to the application of Excite DSC/Variolink II or One-Step Plus/Duo-link for post cementation. After micro-slicing the bonded root dentin, push-out bond strength (P-OBS) test was performed immediately or after 1-year of water storage in each group. Data were analyzed using three-way ANOVA and Student's t-test (α=.05). RESULTS A significant effect of time, DMSO treatment, and treatment × time interaction were observed (P<.001). DMSO did not affect immediate bonding of the two cements. Aging significantly reduced P-OBS in control groups (P<.001), while in DMSO-treated groups, no difference in P-OBS was observed after aging (P>.05). CONCLUSION DMSO-wet bonding might be a beneficial method in preserving the stability of resin-dentin bond strength over time when fiber post is cemented with the tested etch-and-rinse adhesive cements.

Abstract
The aim of this in vitro study was evaluate the effect of application of synthetic hydroxyapatite on fiber post bond strength to radicular dentine. Forty, single-root teeth were endodontically treated and an 8 mm post space was prepared. Specimens were randomly placed in four groups (n = 10 in each) and treated using the following fiber post luting procedures: group 1, 17% EDTA + Panavia SA; group 2, 17% EDTA + Teethmate Desensitizer + Panavia SA; group 3, All-Bond Universal + Duo-Link Universal; and group 4, All-Bond Universal + Teethmate Desensitizer + Duo-Link Universal. Fiber posts were luted in the post space and light-cured for 120 s using a light-emitting diode (LED) lamp. After 7 d of storage at 37°C, the teeth were cut into 1-mm-thick slices, which were subjected to a push-out test until failure using a universal testing machine. Two specimens per group were prepared for scanning electron microscopy analysis. An energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy detector was used for elemental analysis of the specimen surface. The results were statistically analyzed using one-way anova. The fiber post bond strength was statistically significantly increased after the application of Teethmate Desensitizer to post space walls, either with a 10-MDP-containing self-adhesive cement or with a universal adhesive. Scanning electron microscopy and EDAX analysis showed that Teethmate Desensitizer created a calcium phosphate precipitate over post space dentinal tubules, which significantly improved the bond strength of the fiber post luted with 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP)-containing adhesive systems.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In this single-blinded, prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial, the effectiveness of an ozone gas or NaOCl/CHX disinfection protocol was compared within the root canal treatment of apical periodontitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty permanent teeth were randomly allocated to one technique. The clinical/radiographic assessment criteria included clinical symptoms, periapical index (PAI), and size of the apical lesion. In both groups, the root canal was mechanically cleaned and irrigated with NaCl and EDTA. Ozone gas (32 g m-3) or NaOCl (3 %) was applied followed by a 1-week inter-appointment dressing (Ca(OH)2). As final disinfection, ozone gas (ozone group) or CHX 2 % (NaOCl group) was applied. Microbial samples were taken after preparing the access cavity, after chemo-mechanical treatment and after inter-appointment dressing by sterile paper points. Microbial identification was performed by mass spectroscopy (MALDI-TOF-MS) and 16S-rRNA gene sequencing. The treated teeth were blindly re-evaluated after 6/12 months. Success rates, the decrease in PAI, the size of apical lesions and bacterial reduction were compared between groups (Fischer's exact test, Mann-Whitney U test). RESULTS There were no significant differences between the success rates (ozone group: 96.2/95.5 % after 6/12 months; NaOCl group: 95.5/95.2 % after 6/12 months). The differences in the decreases in PAI values and apical lesion sizes were also insignificant after 6 and 12 months. The bacterial reduction showed no significant differences between groups after chemo-mechanical treatment and after inter-appointment dressing. The most commonly found bacterial genera were Streptococcus spp., Parvimonas spp. and Prevotella spp. CONCLUSIONS The here used ozone gas and NaOCl/CHX protocols showed no difference in bacterial reduction in the sampled areas of the root canals. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Within the limitations of the study, ozone gas seems to be a possible alternative disinfection agent within the root canal treatment of apical periodontitis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of the present study was to investigate the bond strength of RelyX Unicem (3M) to root canal dentin when used as an endodontic sealer. MATERIALS AND METHODS Samples of 24 single-rooted teeth were prepared with Gates Glidden drills and K3 files. After that, the roots were randomly assigned to three experimental groups (n = 8) according to the filling material, (1) AH Plus (Dentsply De Trey GmbH)/Gutta-Percha cone; (2) Epiphany SE (Pentron)/Resilon cone; (3) RelyX Unicem/Gutta-Percha cone. All roots were filled using a single cone technique associated to vertical condensation. After the filling procedures, each tooth was prepared for a push-out bond strenght test by cutting 1 mm-thick root slices. Loading was performed on a universal testing machine at a speed of 0.5 mm/min. One-way analysis of variance and Tukey test for multiple comparisons were used to compare the results among the experimental groups. RESULTS Epiphany SE/Resilon showed significantly lower push-out bond strength than both AH Plus/Gutta-Percha and RelyX Unicem/Gutta-Percha (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in bond strength between AH Plus/Gutta-Percha and RelyX Unicem/Gutta-Percha (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Under the present in vitro conditions, bond strength to root dentin promoted by RelyX Unicem was similar to AH Plus. Epiphany SE/Resilon resulted in lower bond strength values when compared to both materials.

Abstract
The aim of this in-vitro study was to evaluate the bond strength of fiber posts cemented in a root canal filled using various root-canal obturation techniques. A total of 33 monoradicular samples, treated endodontically, were randomly assigned to three groups according to the root-canal obturation technique: group 1, continuous-wave technique; group 2, plastic-obturator-core technique; and group 3, cross-linked gutta-percha obturator-core technique. Fiber posts were luted in each sample and each was sectioned perpendicular to the post axis. The push-out test was performed using a universal machine and the maximum failure load was recorded in MPa mm(-2) . Several samples were randomly chosen for scanning electron microscopy evaluation. The mean debris and dentinal tubule-opening scores were calculated separately in the coronal and apical portions. Bond strength was significantly higher in group 1 than in groups 2 and 3. Debris scores were significantly higher in the apical portion of groups 2 and 3 than in group 1. Within the limitations of this study it can be affirmed that thermoplasticized alpha gutta-percha seemed to worsen the cleaning of post-space walls and hence reduced fiber-post bond strength.
