The role of anthropogenic habitats in freshwater mussel conservation

Reintroduction of freshwater mussels (Bivalvia, Unionida) directly after channel dredging can serve as an effective measure in mitigation conservation

This study is based on a natural experiment carried out in the Biebrza National Park, Poland. The study site was a channel inhabited by Anodonta anatina, A. cygnea, Unio pictorum and U. tumidus. The deepening of the channel to restore ecosystem connectivity provided an opportunity to conduct this study. Mussels were collected before dredging, held in captivity for 48 h, measured, individually tagged and released post-dredging to the same 5-m channel sections they originated from. They were subsequently monitored for three consecutive years. Mussel survival remained high throughout the study, and no increased mortality in the year following reintroduction was observed. There was no growth retardation. Mussel mobility was low, with most individuals remaining in the same channel section in which they were released. Recolonisation patterns were consistent with the composition of mussel communities in adjacent unaffected habitats. Although dredging drastically changes mussel habitat, some characteristics: microclimate, water chemistry, nutrient availability and host fish can remain adequate. Our study shows that reintroducing mussels to the same site can serve as an effective mitigation conservation measure and can be preferable to translocation, particularly when carried out under time pressure with limited possibilities of assigning appropriate destination sites.

The molecular response of Mytilus coruscus mantle to shell damage under acute acidified sea water revealed by iTRAQ based quantitative proteomic analysis

Mytilus coruscus is an economically important marine bivalve that lives in estuarine sea areas with seasonal coastal acidification and frequently suffers shell injury in the natural environment. However, the molecular responses and biochemical properties of Mytilus under these conditions are not fully understood. In the present study, we employed tandem mass spectrometry combined with isobaric tagging to identify differentially expressed proteins in the mantle tissue of M. coruscus under different short-term treatments, including shell-complete mussels raised in normal seawater (pH 8.1), shell-damaged mussels raised in normal seawater (pH 8.1), and acidified seawater (pH 7.4). A total of 2694 proteins were identified in the mantle, and analysis of their relative abundance from the three different treatments revealed alterations in the proteins involved in immune regulation, oxidation-reduction processes, protein folding and processing, energy provision, and cytoskeleton. The results obtained by quantitative proteomic analysis of the mantle allowed us to delineate the molecular strategies adopted by M. coruscus in the shell repair process in acidified environments, including an increase in proteins involved in oxidation-reduction processes, protein processing, and cell growth at the expense of proteins involved in immune capacity and energy metabolism. SIGNIFICANCE: The impact of global ocean acidification on calcifying organisms has become a major ecological and environmental problem in the world. Mytilus coruscus is an economically important marine bivalve living in estuary sea area with seasonal coastal acidification, and frequently suffering shell injury in natural environment. Molecular responses of M coruscus under the shell damage and acute acidification is still largely unknown. For this reason, iTRAQ based quantitative proteomic and histological analysis of the mantle from M. coruscus under shell damage and acute acidification were performed, for revealing the proteomic response and possible adaptation mechanism of Mytilus under combined shell damage and acidified sea water, and understanding how the mussel mantle implement a shell-repair process under acidified sea water. Our study provides important data for understanding the shell repair process and proteomic response of Mytilus under ocean acidification, and providing insights into potential adaptation of mussels to future global change.

Community-wide correlations between species richness, abundance and population genomic diversity in a freshwater biodiversity hotspot

Understanding patterns of diversity across macro (e.g. species-level) and micro (e.g. molecular-level) scales can shed light on community function and stability by elucidating the abiotic and biotic drivers of diversity within ecological communities. We examined the relationships among taxonomic and genetic metrics of diversity in freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae), an ecologically important and species-rich group in the southeastern United States. Using quantitative community surveys and reduced-representation genome sequencing across 22 sites in seven rivers and two river basins, we surveyed 68 mussel species and sequenced 23 of these species to characterize intrapopulation genetic variation. We tested for the presence of species diversity-abundance correlations (i.e. the more-individuals hypothesis, MIH), species-genetic diversity correlations (SGDCs) and abundance-genetic diversity correlations (AGDCs) across all sites to evaluate relationships between different metrics of diversity. Sites with greater cumulative multispecies density (a standardized metric of abundance) had a greater number of species, consistent with the MIH hypothesis. Intrapopulation genetic diversity was strongly associated with the density of most species, indicating the presence of AGDCs. However, there was no consistent evidence for SGDCs. Although sites with greater overall densities of mussels had greater species richness, sites with higher genetic diversity did not always exhibit positive correlations with species richness, suggesting that there are spatial and evolutionary scales at which the processes influencing community-level diversity and intraspecific diversity differ. Our work reveals the importance of local abundance as indicator (and possibly a driver) of intrapopulation genetic diversity.

Simultaneous increases of filter-feeding fish and bivalves are key for controlling cyanobacterial blooms in a shallow eutrophic lake

Eutrophication and cyanobacterial blooms have severely affected many freshwater ecosystems. We studied the effects of filter-feeding fish and bivalves on algal populations using a mesocosm experiment and long-term monitoring data from Lake Taihu (China). The mesocosm study, comprised of a two-way factorial design with the clam Corbicula fluminea and the fish Aristichthys nobilis at three biomass levels, resulted in lower chlorophyll a (Chl a) in high fish treatments, but no significant differences in the low and medium fish treatments. Chl a also decreased with an increase in clam biomass in the high fish treatments. Moreover, filter-feeding fish resulted in a decrease in algal sizes (e.g., the colony size of Microcystis aeruginosa was inversely related to fish biomass) which likely increased the filter-feeding efficiency of bivalves. Biomass of filter-feeding fish was found to be a key factor driving the synergistic effects of filter-feeding fish and bivalves in waters dominated by Microcystis colonies. Long-term monitoring revealed increasing trends in Chl a concentration, total fish catch per unit effort (TF-CPUE), and filter-feeding fish (FF-CPUE), and slightly decreasing trends in bivalve biomass and nitrogen to phosphorus ratios (N:P) from 2006 to 2016. Bivalve biomass and N:P were negatively correlated with Chl a, while FF-CPUE was not significantly related to Chl a. The current filter-feeding fish biomass in Lake Taihu is estimated to be too low to drive synergistic algal control effects together with bivalves. Furthermore, the lack of filter feeders in Lake Taihu may lead to top-down control by predators that cannot counteract the bottom-up effects of nutrients on phytoplankton. Collectively, these long-term monitoring and experimental data support the combined use filter-feeding fish and bivalves for managing cyanobacteria blooms in Lake Taihu.

Freshwater mussel conservation: A global horizon scan of emerging threats and opportunities

We identified 14 emerging and poorly understood threats and opportunities for addressing the global conservation of freshwater mussels over the next decade. A panel of 17 researchers and stakeholders from six continents submitted a total of 56 topics that were ranked and prioritized using a consensus-building Delphi technique. Our 14 priority topics fell into five broad themes (autecology, population dynamics, global stressors, global diversity, and ecosystem services) and included understanding diets throughout mussel life history; identifying the drivers of population declines; defining metrics for quantifying mussel health; assessing the role of predators, parasites, and disease; informed guidance on the risks and opportunities for captive breeding and translocations; the loss of mussel-fish co-evolutionary relationships; assessing the effects of increasing surface water changes; understanding the effects of sand and aggregate mining; understanding the effects of drug pollution and other emerging contaminants such as nanomaterials; appreciating the threats and opportunities arising from river restoration; conserving understudied hotspots by building local capacity through the principles of decolonization; identifying appropriate taxonomic units for conservation; improved quantification of the ecosystem services provided by mussels; and understanding how many mussels are enough to provide these services. Solutions for addressing the topics ranged from ecological studies to technological advances and socio-political engagement. Prioritization of our topics can help to drive a proactive approach to the conservation of this declining group which provides a multitude of important ecosystem services.

Diversity and Phylogenetics of Freshwater Mussels (Unionidae) from Southern Thailand with the Description of One New Genus and Five New Species-Group Taxa

Southern Thailand represents a region of unique freshwater biodiversity with many endemic taxa, including a number of freshwater mussel species (Bivalvia: Unionidae). In this study, we recognize 13 taxa in the tribes Contradentini, Rectidentini, Pseudodontini (subfamily Gonideinae), and Indochinellini (subfamily Parreysiinae) that inhabit different localities in the Songkhla Lake, Tapi River, and Tha Taphao River basins. Based on the results of morphological and phylogenetic analyses, we discovered among these mussels six taxa new to science, including one genus, three species, and two subspecies. New taxonomic names are introduced here as follows: Songkhlanaiagen. nov.; S. tamodienicagen. & sp. nov.; Sundadontina plugpomenicasp. nov.; Monodontina vondembuschiana tapienicassp. nov.; M. vondembuschiana thasaenicassp. nov. (Pseudodontini); and Trapezoideus thachiadensissp. nov. (Contradentini). These new taxa confirm the high conservation priority of the Southern Thai freshwater mussel fauna.

Disentangling structural and functional responses of native versus alien communities by canonical ordination analyses and variation partitioning with multiple matrices

Freshwaters are under accelerated human pressure, and mollusk communities are among its most sensitive, threatened, and valuable components. To the best of our knowledge, the overall effects of damming, environment, space, time, and invasive alien mollusk species, on structural and functional responses of native mollusk communities were not yet compared. Using historical information and recent data from a river, we aimed to investigate and disentangle these effects and evaluate the differences in structural and functional responses of natives and alien invasives to the same predictors. Variation partitioning showed that alien species were as important predictors as were environmental factors and time in explaining species composition of native freshwater mollusk communities. Aliens were more independent of environmental conditions than natives and responded to different drivers, partially explaining their invasion success. The increased abundance of some alien gastropods was positively related to taxonomic diversity, while certain alien bivalves were negatively associated with the functional diversity of native communities. We introduce a cumulative variation partitioning with multiple response (native and alien) and predictor matrices, along with a diagram to show their relations, advocating for a conceptual shift in future community ecology, from “variables to matrices” and from “multivariate analyses to multi-matrix statistical modeling”.

Oriental freshwater mussels arose in East Gondwana and arrived to Asia on the Indian Plate and Burma Terrane

Freshwater mussels cannot spread through oceanic barriers and represent a suitable model to test the continental drift patterns. Here, we reconstruct the diversification of Oriental freshwater mussels (Unionidae) and revise their taxonomy. We show that the Indian Subcontinent harbors a rather taxonomically poor fauna, containing 25 freshwater mussel species from one subfamily (Parreysiinae). This subfamily most likely originated in East Gondwana in the Jurassic and its representatives arrived to Asia on two Gondwanan fragments (Indian Plate and Burma Terrane). We propose that the Burma Terrane was connected with the Indian Plate through the Greater India up to the terminal Cretaceous. Later on, during the entire Paleogene epoch, these blocks have served as isolated evolutionary hotspots for freshwater mussels. The Burma Terrane collided with mainland Asia in the Late Eocene, leading to the origin of the Mekong's Indochinellini radiation. Our findings indicate that the Burma Terrane had played a major role as a Gondwanan "biotic ferry" alongside with the Indian Plate.

Aquatic Oligochaeta (Annelida: Clitellata) in wetlands and irrigated rice fields in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (Southern Brazil)

ABSTRACT The knowledge of the diversity and distribution of aquatic Oligochaeta (Annelida: Clitellata) species is scarce in southern Brazil. This study presents a list of the species of aquatic Oligochaeta in wetlands and irrigated rice fields in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Collections were carried out in two large wetland remnants and seven irrigated rice fields distributed in three regions across the state. We recorded eight species from two families (Alluroididae and Naididae). We expanded the distribution ranges of two species (Brinkhurstia americana and Stylaria lacustris), which represent new records for the state of Rio Grande do Sul and registered their occurrence in non-documented environments. In specific, the present study increases to 24 species the aquatic Oligochaeta diversity for the state of Rio Grande do Sul. In addition, the spatial distribution of the species recorded suggests that rice fields support a subset of the wetland fauna of aquatic Oligochaeta. The results provide important information on the ecology and distribution of limnic Oligochaeta and are useful to inform on the diversity of this fauna in agroecosystems.
