Abstract
OBJECTIVES Using smartphones, we aimed to clarify the characteristics of anticipatory postural adjustments (APA) in older adults and examine the relationship between cognitive and balance functions. METHODS The study participants were 10 young and 13 older adults. An accelerometer built into a smartphone was attached to the lower back (L5) of the participant, and acceleration in the mediolateral direction was measured using a one-leg stance (OLS). As APA features, we analyzed the time to the peak value in the stance direction (peak latency [PL]) and the amount of displacement to the peak value in the stance direction (peak magnitude [PM]). Additionally, the measured PL was divided by PM for each group to obtain the APA ratio (APAr). We investigated the relationship between the APAr and Mini-BESTest subitems. RESULTS Older adults showed delayed PL and decreased PM levels (p < 0.01). While in the Mini-BESTest sub-items, deductions were most common in the order of dual-task and single-leg standing, and most participants with low APAr scores were degraded in APA of sub-items. The correlation was observed between APAr and both TUG and dual-task cost (DTC) (r= -0.56, r= -0.67). According to the receiver operating characteristic curve, the APAr value was 1.71 in the older age group. CONCLUSIONS Older adults showed delayed PL and decreased PM, and APAr was associated with cognitive and locomotor functions. By evaluating the APAr at the initiation of movement, it may be possible to distinguish the APA of the older adluts from the possible to the impossible of OLS movement.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of virtual reality interventions in preventing falls among non-disabled older adults. METHODS We conducted a librarian-designed database search. Two researchers independently screened eligible studies. The Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions was used to assess the risk of bias in the included studies. RESULTS Virtual reality interventions can effectively improve gait and dynamic and static balance function, enhance lower limb muscle strength, and reduce the risk of falls in the non-disabled elderly. However, the effect of virtual reality on reducing the fear of falling remains controversial. CONCLUSION Virtual reality interventions can effectively prevent falls in nondisabled elderly individuals. Higher quality, larger sample size, and long-term follow-up studies are needed to further verify the long-term effectiveness of virtual reality training in preventing falls in non-disabled elderly individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Veering occurs during blind walking, which causes individuals to deviate from crosswalks or fall off platforms. Despite being linked to static postural control, the relationship between veering and gait function (gait variability and plantar pressure), which is presumed to be related to dynamic postural control, has yet to be fully understood. RESEARCH QUESTION How do gait variability and plantar pressure affect veering? METHODS This experiment involved a walking task in which 11 blind adults were instructed to walk along a straight path using a white cane. We measured the veering values and analyzed the relationship between gait variability and plantar pressure. RESULTS One participant with a particularly severe veering tendency was excluded from the analysis. Based on the veering characteristics of the participants, the walking trajectories were classified as veering to the left (14 trials) or the right (14 trials) sides. Correlation analysis showed no significant correlation between the veering value and gait variability (vertical, lateral, and anterior-posterior). Plantar pressure (the ball of the fifth toe and the total) was significantly negatively correlate with the veering value. In contrast, the plantar pressure results for the participant who was excluded showed a different characteristic. SIGNIFICANCE We hypothesized that blind individuals would exhibit dynamic postural control to stay on a straight path by increasing the plantar pressure on the ball of the fifth toe and the total pressure on the opposite foot when veering occurs. However, this adaptation was not observed in a blind individual with severe veering tendencies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Overweight, obesity and falls are major public health problems and old people are the biggest group suffering falls. METHODS 92 females were divided into the overweight or obesity (O) group (68.85 ± 3.85) and regular-weight (R) group (67.90 ± 4.02). Lower extremity motor capacity and plantar pressure were compared between the two groups. The IRB approval number is 20190804. RESULTS (1) Functional Movement Screen and Fugl-Meyer Assessment scores in the O group were significantly lower than in the R group. The time to complete the Timed Up and Go test in the O group was significantly longer than in the R group. (2) Foot flat phase, double support distance, and left foot axis angle in the O group were significantly higher than in the R group. Distance and velocity, left-foot minimum subtalar joint angle and right-foot maximum subtalar joint angle in the O group were significantly shorter than in the R group. (3) Peak force, average force and pressure of metatarsal 1-4, mid-foot, heel medial and lateral, peak pressure of metatarsal l, midfoot, heel medial and lateral in the O group were significantly higher than in the R group. (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Overweight and obese elderly women have a lower sensorimotor function, flexibility and stability in functional movements, but higher loads on the foot.

Abstract
Background Falls and depressive symptoms are both public health concerns in China, but the effects of depressive symptoms on falls and injurious falls have not been thoroughly investigated. Methods This population-based prospective cohort study used data derived from adults aged ≥45 years acquired from the 2015 and 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Data were analyzed from August 2021 to December 2021. Self-reported depressive symptoms were determined using a 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale (CESD-10) with a total score range of 0-30. Item responses of 3-4 or 5-7 days were deemed indicative of specific depressive symptoms. The outcome variables were self-reported accidental falls and injurious falls. Results Of the 12,392 participants included in the study, 3,671 (29.6%) had high baseline depressive symptoms (CESD-10 scores ≥ 10), 1,892 (15.3%) experienced falls, and 805 (6.5%) experienced injurious falls during 2015-2018 follow-up. High depressive symptoms increased the risk of falls [odds ratio (OR) 1.34, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.19-1.50] and injurious falls (OR 1.28, 95% CI 1.09-1.51) in a multivariable logistic regression model adjusted for major demographic, health-related, and anthropometric covariates. All of the 10 specific depressive symptoms except "felt hopeless" were associated with falls, and four specific symptoms significantly increased the risk of injurious falls; "had trouble concentrating" (OR 1.32, 95% CI 1.13-1.55); "felt depressed" (OR 1.32, 95% CI 1.12-1.55); "everything was an effort" (OR 1.23, 95% CI 1.04-1.45); and "restless sleep" (OR 1.18, 95% CI 1.02-1.40). Conclusion High depressive symptoms are significantly related to risk of falls and injurious falls. Four specific symptoms (had trouble concentrating, felt depressed, everything was an effort, and restless sleep) increase the risk of injurious falls in Chinese adults aged ≥ 45 years.
