Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental caries are common and troublesome and may affect individuals' health conditions. It is crucial to comprehend the caries experience for prevention, management, and enhancing oral health. Techniques such as CAMBRA can help assess an individual's risk factors for caries lesions. This study aims to assess the caries risk in five distinct regions of Saudi Arabia, utilizing the CAMBRA methodology. METHODS This multiregional cross-sectional study was conducted at university dental clinics across the five regions of Saudi Arabia, using a Caries Management by Risk Assessment (CAMBRA) tool. This study used binary logistic regression analysis, the Pearson Chi-square test, and descriptive analysis as statistical methods. RESULTS A total of 551 respondents participated in the study, with 59.7% being male and 40.3% being female. The age group with the highest proportion was 20-29, making up 31.6% of the participants. All participants exhibited at least one caries lesion (100%), with white spots (66.4%) and enamel lesions (56.1%) being the most prevalent. The moderate-risk category encompassed the largest proportion of participants, accounting for 60% of the total. High caries risk had a significant association with age group (P < 0.001), education (P < 0.001), profession (P < 0.001), and socio-economic status (P < 0.001). Furthermore, only age and socio-economic status showed a significant relationship with high caries risk in the multiple logistic regression. CONCLUSION The CAMBRA tool indicates a high prevalence of moderate risk across the five regions of Saudi Arabia, identifying age and socio-economic status as significant predictors of caries risk.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study explored the association between self-reported diabetes mellitus, glycaemic control, measured by glycohaemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, and untreated root caries among U.S. adults, exploring the impact of diabetes status and glycaemic control levels on root caries risk. MATERIALS AND METHODS Analysing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2015 to 2018, we included 7490 participants aged 30 and above. We investigated the association between self-reported diabetes, glycaemic control, and untreated root caries, adjusting for demographic and health-related variables. Weighted logistic regression models estimated untreated root caries odds by diabetes status and HbA1c cutoffs (6.5-9%), adjusting for demographics, health behaviours, BMI, diet, oral health factors. RESULTS A significant association was found between higher HbA1c levels and an increased risk of untreated root caries (odds ratio [OR]: 1.11, 95% CI: 1.01-1.22, p < .05). Self-reported diabetes was not significantly linked to untreated root caries after adjusting for HbA1c and other factors. Glycaemic control thresholds (HbA1c ≥8%) among diabetic participants were associated with higher odds of untreated root caries. CONCLUSIONS Poorly controlled diabetes appears to be associated with untreated root caries among U.S. adults. This highlights the greater impact of glycaemic control versus self-reported diabetes on dental health and the need for regular oral screenings for patients with poor glycaemic control.

Abstract
Background Caries risk (CR) assessment tools are used to properly identify individuals with caries risk and to improve preventive procedures and programs. A tool such as CAMBRA determines the precise protective factors of caries and identifies an individual's specific therapeutic intervention. The purpose of this study was to assess the caries risk using the CAMBRA protocol among the general population of Pakistan. Methods This multicentre analytical study was conducted in ten dental hospitals in different provinces of Pakistan and the caries risk assessment was carried out using a questionnaire that was designed using the Caries Management by Risk Assessment (CAMBRA) protocol. All 521 participants were intra-orally examined to assess oral hygiene status and the presence of disease. Multiple logistic regression test was performed for analysis. Results A higher number of participants (61.2%) were found to be in the moderate risk category of caries risk assessment. The males are 51% less likely to have caries compared to the females (AOR = 0.49, P = 0.081). The majority of participants (71.3%) had one or more disease indicators, with white spots and visible cavities. Those with visible, heavy plaque were 13.9 times more likely to have caries compared to those without (AOR = 13.92, P < 0.001). Those using calcium and phosphate during the last 6 months were 90% less likely to have caries compared to those not using them (AOR = 0.10, P < 0.001). There was no significant interaction between all eight risk factors retained in the final model (P > 0.05), the Hosmer and Lemeshow Test P < 0.001, classification accuracy = 87.1%, and AUC = 91.2%. Conclusion The caries risk among the general population of Pakistan is moderate, with significant variation among age groups, education levels, and socioeconomic status.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The oral cavity is an easily accessible unique environment and open system which is influenced by the oral fluids, microbiota, and nutrition. Little is known about the kinetics and dynamics of metabolic processes at the intraoral surfaces. Real-time monitoring of salivary biomarkers, e.g., glucose, lactate, fluoride, calcium, phosphate, and pH with intraoral sensors is therefore of major interest. The aim of this review is to overview the existing literature for intraoral saliva sensors. MATERIALS AND METHODS A comprehensive literature search was performed to review the most relevant studies on intraoral saliva sensor technology. RESULTS There is limited literature about the in situ saliva monitoring of salivary biomarkers. Bioadhesion and biofouling processes at the intraoral surfaces limit the performances of the sensors. Real-time, long-term, and continuous intraoral measurement of salivary metabolites remains challenging and needs further investigation as only few well-functioning sensors have been developed until today. Until now, there is no sensor that measures reliably beyond hours for any analyte other than glucose. CONCLUSIONS Saliva's complex and dynamic structure as well as bioadhesion are key challenges and should be addressed in the future developments. Consequently, more studies that focus particularly on biofouling processes and interferential effects of the salivary matrix components on sensor surfaces are required. CLINICAL RELEVANCE By monitoring fluids in the oral cavity, as the entrance to the digestive system, extensive information can be obtained regarding the effects of foods and preventive agents on the oral microbiota and the tooth surfaces. This may lead to a better understanding of strategies to modulate oral and general health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes mellitus is a complex heterogeneous metabolic disorder known to lead to several pathogenic disorders, and has a bidirectional relationship with oral health conditions. This study aimed at estimating the prevalence, treatment needs and correlates of dental caries among adult patients attending a diabetic clinic in Uganda. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study that used questionnaires to collect data on socio-demographic factors, diabetes history, oral health status, dental health care, dietary factors, lifestyle factors, and dental examination guided by the modified World Health Organization oral health questionnaire for adults. RESULTS We enrolled 239 participants, prevalence of dental caries was 71.6%, treatment need was nearly 100%, and mean DMFT was 3.82 (SD = 5.46). Dental caries experience was associated with being widowed. CONCLUSION We found a high prevalence of dental caries experience and large treatment need among our participants. We recommend integration of oral health care into routine diabetic services in rural sub Saharan Africa.

Abstract
It could conceivably be hypothesized that a link exists between an altered microbiota due to local hyperglycemia and the increased risk of caries in diabetes mellitus (DM). This systematic review aimed to perform a cross-study comparison into the salivary microbiota of adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) compared to adults without T2D, particularly focusing on the abundance of acid-associated bacteria. This report follows PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses). Studies using next-generation sequencing and other molecular techniques are included. The methodological quality of individual studies was assessed using appropriate Joanna Briggs Institute tools. The certainty of the evidence considering the effect direction was evaluated using the GRADE approach. From 2060 titles retrieved, 12 were included in the data synthesis, totalling 873 individuals with T2D and controls evaluated across the literature. Weighted averages of blood glucose levels (HbA1c—fasting blood glucose) were 8.21%—172.14 mg/dL and 5.12%—84.53 mg/dL for T2D and controls, respectively. In most studies, the relative abundance of acidogenic and aciduric bacteria was higher in diabetics when compared to their normoglycaemic controls. Whilst the evidence certainty was very low, there was a consistent Proteobacteria depletion and Firmicutes enrichment in T2D. As for the acid-associated genera, there was consistent enrichment of Lactobacillus and Veillonela for T2D. Tannerella/T. forsythia was enriched in T2D saliva, but the certainty is low. Further well-designed cohorts are needed to clarify the distribution of acid-associated microorganisms in the saliva of adults with T2D and how this can be clinically manifested (PROSPERO = CRD42021264350).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral health is influenced by social determinants of health (SDH), predisposing people and communities to greater risk of developing caries. This study evaluated the association between caries risk in adults and SDH such as ZIP Codes, systemic diseases, payment methods, and race or ethnicity. METHODS The BigMouth Dental Data Repository (n = 57,211) was used to extract clinical and SDH data from patients' dental electronic health records for 2019. Caries risk categories were used as ZIP Code data was merged with the Social Deprivation Index, a composite measure of area-level deprivation based on 7 demographic characteristics collected in the American Community Survey. RESULTS The results showed that the odds of being in the high caries risk group were higher for people in the 49- to 64-year age group (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 2.24; 95% CI, 2.08 to 2.40; P ≤ .001), men (aOR, 1.19; 95% CI, 1.13 to 1.25; P ≤ .001), people who had comorbidities (diabetes: aOR, 1.16; 95% CI, 1.08 to 1.24; P ≤ .001; cardiovascular disease: aOR, 1.40; 95% CI, 1.32 to 1.50), and people with an Social Deprivation Index score above the 75th percentile (aOR, 2.39; 95% CI, 2.21 to 2.58; P ≤ .001). In addition, Hispanic and Black people had higher odds of being at high caries risk than other races or ethnicities (Hispanic: aOR, 3.05; 95% CI, 2.32 to 4.00; Black: aOR, 2.05; 95% CI, 1.02 to 4.01). CONCLUSIONS This study shows the association of caries risk with higher social deprivation, reinforcing the role of structural and upstream factors in oral health. This study is unique in using recorded ZIP Code information and assessing caries risk levels for those regions. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS The physical and structural environment should be considered contributors to caries risk in people.

PurposeThe purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate current evidence to prevent and manage dental caries in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).MethodsFollowing Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, the Participants, Intervention, Comparison, Outcomes and Study Design (PICOS) strategy was used to formulate a structured search: systematic search of PubMed, Cochrane Library, MEDLINE via Ovid, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Lilacs without any date limit and/or language restrictions. Two independent reviewers performed data extraction and risk of bias assessments in the included studies. Data homogeneity was assessed according to interventions for treating dental caries in T2DM. Statistical analyses were performed with JMP®.ResultsTwo studies out of 909 were included in the systematic review. Only quantitative studies involving topical applications for management of dental caries in patients with T2DM were included. One study assessed the effect of intensive oral hygiene care program including toothbrushing and interdental cleaning using interproximal brushes and/or dental floss and supragingival debridement by dental hygienist with educational brochures in T2DM, while another investigated the immunologically active salivary substitutes with using Oral Hygiene Instructions (OHI), mouthwash, and moisturizing gel for 6 months. Intensive oral hygiene care program or immunologically active salivary substitutes with using OHI, mouthwash, and moisturizing gel for 6 months were reported to reverse/arrest dental caries in patients with T2DM.ConclusionThe current randomized controlled clinical trials demonstrated that regular extensive oral health education using interdental cleaning aids, mouthwash, moistening gel, and saliva substitutes including lactoperoxidase, lysozyme, glucose oxidase, and lactoferrin could control oral inflammation and contribute to the management of dental caries in patients with T2DM.Systematic Review Registrationhttps://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/display_record.php?ID=CRD42020197507, identifier: CRD42020197507.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The extraction of a tooth exacerbates the stress in diabetic patients leading to diabetic complications so the aim was to evaluate the changes in blood cortisol, glucose, and oxygen saturation in type 2 diabetic patients during tooth extraction to pay special attention during a routine surgical procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS The research included 40 patients with type 2 diabetes with indications of tooth extraction. They were divided into two subgroups by 20 participants and split according to local anesthesia (lidocaine with additional adrenaline or lidocaine only). Cortisol, blood sugar, blood pressure, arterial pulse, and blood oxygen saturation were measured. Patients were also evaluated for their sensitivity to pain through the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). RESULTS Cortisol and glucose levels scientifically increased throughout the procedure. Meanwhile, systolic, and diastolic blood pressure and saturation showed no difference between the measurements during and after tooth extraction (p = .280; p = .090; p = .590, respectively). Most patients (60.0%) felt no pain during/after the procedure. None of the subjects was feeling more pain than 30 points by VAS. The comparison between groups receiving lidocaine showed no statistical differences when adding adrenaline to lidocaine. Evaluation of pain by VAS showed that more patients felt pain when they were receiving lidocaine without adrenaline. CONCLUSIONS Diabetic patients require a more cautious approach when undergoing teeth extractions despite it being a routine procedure.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Among the oral manifestations of diabetes mellitus (DM), salivary alterations stand out when considering that they can be linked to environmental changes that prompt other oral diseases. This study aimed to compare whether salivary parameters such as salivary flow, ionic composition, pH, and buffer capacity are altered in adults with DM. STUDY DESIGN A literature search was performed in 8 databases and the gray literature. Observational and clinical studies with populations >30 years old were included. The methodological quality of individual studies was assessed, 7 meta-analyses were performed, and the certainty of evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations approach (protocol registered at PROSPERO-CRD42021214632). RESULTS Of the 5,816 titles retrieved, 22 observational studies were included, representing a total of 1,202 individuals with DM and 946 normoglycemic control subjects. Individuals with DM had significantly lower unstimulated (mean difference [Md] = 0.13 mL/min; CI = 0.06-0.2; P = .0005) and stimulated (Md = 0.44 mL/min; CI = 0.13-0.75; P = .005) salivary flow rates, a lower pH when evaluated with electrodes (Md = 0.45; CI = 0.19-0.71; P = .0007), and a higher salivary urea (standard Md = 1.52; CI = 0.19-2.85; P = .03). No significant differences were found in the other parameters. CONCLUSIONS Although the certainty of evidence was low because of the type of studies included, this review indicated salivary alterations in individuals with DM, such as hyposalivation, pH, and urea concentration.

Abstract
Background: Caries risk assessment is a useful tool in caries prevention and management. Using a tool such as CAMBRA, every individual can be assessed according to his or her disease indicators, risk factors, and protective factors for the current and future caries. Aim: This study aimed to assess caries risk among the general population of Sakaka, Saudi Arabia using the CAMBRA protocol. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at university dental clinics using a questionnaire that was formulated using the CAMBRA caries risk assessment tool; afterwards, all 160 participants were intra-orally examined to assess oral hygiene status and presence of disease. Independent t-tests, ANOVAs, and chi-square tests were performed for analysis. Results: The majority of participants had one or more disease indicators, with white spots and visible cavities (71.3%), and the most commonly present risk factor was visible heavy plaque on teeth (82.5%). The use of fluoridated toothpaste (92.5%) was the most common protective factor. The majority of participants (85%) were in the ‘High’ category of Caries risk assessment. The prevalence of high caries risk was significantly higher among the rural participants compared to the urban (p <0.05), and significantly fewer of those with a primary school education level or lower were in the high dental caries risk group compared to the other educational categories (p <0.001). Conclusion: The caries risk among the general population of Sakaka, Saudi Arabia, is high, with significant variation among age groups, education levels, and geographical locations.

Abstract
PURPOSE This regional 2-center study was designed 1) to analyze the clinical features of all patients with odontogenic orofacial infection as per type of visit, 2) to analyze the clinical features of diabetic patients compared with nondiabetic patients, and 3) to identify potential variables that may associate with long length of stay (LOS) of patients admitted for orofacial odontogenic infection in Northern Peninsular Malaysia. PATIENTS AND METHODS All adult patients with orofacial odontogenic infections who attended the Oral and Maxillofacial Department of Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun and Hospital Sultan Abdul Halim from March 2015 to February 2019 were included. Data on patients' demography, medical history, smoking status, clinical presentation, and LOS were collected. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed using the dichotomous dependent variable, namely, short LOS (LOS <5 days) and long LOS (LOS ≥5 days). RESULTS A total of 355 patients were reported with the mean age of 39.93 ± 15.95 years old. Multivariate analysis revealed that diabetes (adjusted odds ratio = 4.387, 95% confidence interval = 1.453 to 13.241, P value = .009) and multiple space involvement (adjusted odds ratio = 4.859, 95% confidence interval = 1.280, 18.454, P value = .020) were responsible for long LOS. CONCLUSIONS Judicious treatment is recommended when treating patients of such infection that involves multiple spaces with underlying diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
Objectives To evaluate the survival rate, success rate, and peri-implant biological changes of immediately loaded dental implants (ILs) placed in type 2 diabetic patients (DM2). Materials and methods The present study was registered on PROSPERO and followed the PRISMA checklist. The search was performed by the first reviewer in January 2021. The electronic databases used were MEDLINE via PubMed, Cochrane, BVS, Web of Science, Scopus, LIVIVO, and gray literature. The risk of bias analysis was performed using an instrument from the Joanna Briggs Institute. Results A total of 3566 titles and abstracts were obtained. The qualitative synthesis included 7 studies, while the quantitative synthesis included 5 studies. The meta-analysis of IL in individuals with DM2 compared to nondiabetic individuals showed no significant difference among the groups regarding the survival rate of dental implants (RR = 1.00, 95% CI 0.96–1.04; p = 0.91; I2 = 0%), even if the patient had poor glycemic control (RR = 1.08, 95% CI 0.87–1.33; p = 0.48; I2 = 70%). Meta-analysis of marginal bone loss in IL compared to conventional loading in DM2 patients also showed no significant difference (mean difference = − 0.08, 95% CI − 0.25–0.08; p = 0.33; I2 = 83%). Conclusions Type 2 diabetes mellitus does not seem to be a risk factor for immediately loaded implants if the glycemic level is controlled, the oral hygiene is satisfactory, and the technical steps are strictly followed. Clinical relevance Rehabilitation in diabetic individuals is more common due to the highest prevalence of edentulism in this population. Abstract
The article is a concise compendium of knowledge on the etiology of pathogenic microorganisms of all complexes causing oral diseases. The influence of particular components of the diet and the role of oxidative stress in periodontal diseases were described. The study investigated the bacteriostatic effect of the diet of adults in in vivo and in vitro tests on the formation of bacterial biofilms living in the subgingival plaque, causing diseases called periodontitis. If left untreated, periodontitis can damage the gums and alveolar bones. Anaerobic bacteria, called periopathogens or periodontopathogens, play a key role in the etiopathogenesis of periodontitis. The most important periopathogens of the oral microbiota are bacteria of all complexes, including the red complex. The obtained results suggest the possibility of using a specific diet in the prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases-already treated as a disease of civilization. The quoted article is an innovative compilation of knowledge on this subject and it can be a valuable source of knowledge for professional hygienists, dentists, peridontologists, dentistry students and anyone who cares about proper oral hygiene. The obtained results suggest the possibility of using this type of diet in the prophylaxis of the oral cavity in order to avoid periodontitis.

Abstract
Micro/nanodevices have been widely applied for the real-time monitoring of intracellular activities and the delivery of exogenous substances in the past few years. This review focuses on miniaturized micro/nanodevices for assessment and treatment in stomatology and ophthalmology. We first summarize the recent progress in this field by examining the available materials and fabrication techniques, device design principles, mechanisms, and biosafety aspects of micro/nanodevices. Following a discussion of biochemical sensing technology from the cellular level to the tissue level for disease assessment, we then summarize the use of microneedles and other micro/nanodevices in the treatment of oral and ocular diseases and conditions, including oral cancer, eye wrinkles, keratitis, and infections. Along with the identified key challenges, this review concludes with future directions as a small fraction of vast opportunities, calling for joint efforts between clinicians and engineers with diverse backgrounds to help facilitate the rapid development of this burgeoning field in stomatology and ophthalmology.

Objective: To investigate the associations of asthma with dental-caries-experience (DFT: decayed and filled teeth) and untreated-dental-caries (DT: decayed teeth) in the US adult population.Methods: Data from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey, 2009-2014 were analyzed. Study-participants were classified into current, former and never asthmatics based on their asthma-status. Former-asthmatics were excluded. Both the outcomes, dental-caries-experience and untreated-dental-caries were dichotomized as being either present or absent, and were also categorized into tertiles based on their distributions in our study-sample. Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the associations of asthma with dichotomized outcomes. The generalized logit model was applied for multilevel categorical outcomes. Multivariable models were developed to control for common demographic, clinical, and lifestyle factors.Results: Total study-participants were 13,135, representing 175.26 million US adults. In the adjusted models, current-asthmatics, when compared to the reference group of never-asthmatics, were more likely to have dental-caries-experience (odds ratio [OR], 1.37; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.13-1.66) and untreated-dental-caries (OR, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.10-1.73) in ≥1 tooth. Asthma was associated with all three categories of dental-caries-experience in our study-sample. We observed a positive gradient in the OR with an increasing extent of untreated-dental-caries. Relative to never-asthmatics, asthma doubled the odds of having untreated dental caries in the subgroup of current-smokers.Conclusion: Current-asthmatic adults had higher odds of dental-caries-experience and untreated-dental-caries as compared to never-asthmatic adults in the US. Based on the observations from this study, interprofessional collaboration should be recommended to institute caries control and health promotion in current-asthmatic adult population.

Abstract
Periodontal disease is a chronic infectious disease, which is characterized by the damaged dental hard tissue by lactic acid generated by microorganisms after the fermentation of carbohydrates rich diet. The risk of periodontal disease is known to be higher in diabetic patients. We compared the diversity of five commonly occurring dental bacteria including Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, Capnocytophaga ochracea, Prevotella intermedia, and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans in 14 type-2 diabetic patients and equal numbers of healthy controls. The subgingival samples were collected using sterile paper points. We used 16S rRNA sequence specific primers for PCR-based identification of dental bacteria. Our results showed that A. actinomycetemcomitans was completely absent in control subjects but present in 43% of diabetic patients. C. ochracea was highly prevalent in diabetic patients (100%) as compared to controls (28.5%). The frequency of other three bacterial species was also higher in diabetic patients than control subjects. These findings indicate that dental bacteria are highly prevalent in subgingival pockets of diabetic patients. Therefore, proper monitoring of diabetic patients for dental care is important to prevent bacterial growth and its sequela in risky individuals. Further case-control studies using larger sample size would help in validating the association between oral diseases and diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Approximately 75% of diabetic patients in Saudi Arabia had poor glycaemic control. A high proportion of these patients will attend dental surgery clinics for treatment. Therefore, dentists should be well-prepared to control any complications they might arise on the dental chair during the dental procedures. Management of the associated risk factors is important to limit disease complications and improve the health of patients with diabetes.The objectives of this review were to determine the maximum acceptable level of blood glucose for tooth removal in diabetics, show a systematic technique for the management of patients with diabetes on the dental chair. By using PRISMA guidelines, analysis of the published articles and reports across the world is considered one of the most appropriate available methods to obtain strong evidence about the acceptable levels of blood glucose where teeth extraction can be done safely. RESULTS A total of 1080 studies were retrieved using the search strategy. After screening 185 titles, abstracts and 85 full-text articles, 36 studies were included. The outcome of this systematic review revealed that fasting blood glucose level of 240 mg/dl is a critical point for any dental treatment because the warning signs of diabetes start coming out. Maximum acceptable levels of blood glucose for removal of teeth in diabetics are 180 mg/dl (before meal) and 234 mg/dl (2 h after a meal). High blood glucose levels reduce the secretion of nitric oxide (powerful vasodilator) in the body which leads to poor circulation and slow-healing socket. Uncontrolled diabetics are at high risk of infection because of the high ketone levels in the blood. CONCLUSION Fasting blood glucose level of 180 mg/dl is a cut-off point for any selective dental extraction. However, Random blood glucose level of 234 mg/dl (13 mmol/l) is a cut-off point for an emergency tooth extraction. Tightly controlled diabetic patients (blood glucose level below 70 mg/dl) are susceptible to hypoglycemia.

Abstract
Objective: To describe the significance of type 1 diabetes mellitus (juvenile diabetes) to the pediatric oral health provider. Relevance: The oral health provider must be aware of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) characteristics, influence of on oral health, each patient pre-operative diabetic management, symptoms and treatment of hypo and hyper-glycemia, and the clinical implications before, during and after treatment of children with T1DM. Study design: A review of the scientific literature about the T1DM influence on dental development, caries prevalence, gingival and periodontal diseases, wound healing, salivary and taste dysfunction, oral infections, and the factors that must be taken in consideration before, during and after oral treatment of children with T1DM is presented. Conclusion: The increasing prevalence of T1DB in children strongly emphasizes the need for oral health providers to be aware of the complicacy of the treatment aimed to obtain and maintain acceptable blood glucose levels in diabetic children, the effect of diabetes on the oral cavity, the possible serious complications due to hypo- or hyper glycemia before, during and after oral treatments, the effect of stress on blood glucose levels, and the special behavioral interaction between the diabetic child, his/her family and the oral health providers.
