Fish trophic structure in estuaries, with particular emphasis on estuarine typology and zoogeography

Fish diversity, composition, and guild structure influenced by the environmental drivers in a small temporarily closed tropical estuary from the western coast of India

Globally, small temporarily closed estuaries are the least considered for fisheries assessment and management due to a low scientific priority and regional importance. However, these ecosystems are highly exposed to anthropogenic pressures and may deteriorate without assessing its aquatic resources. In this study, fish diversity and guild structure of Chettuva-a temporarily closed tropical estuary in the western coast of India-was investigated. A total of 70 fish taxa belonging to 32 families were recorded with the quantitative predominance of families; Mugilidae, Cichlidae, and Leiognathidae. Family Carangidae had the highest species diversity (seven species), followed by Clupeidae and Mugilidae (five species). Ecological guild assessment revealed that the immigrating marine fish species (marine estuarine opportunist (34 species) and marine estuarine dependent (13 species)) dominated the guild structure over the estuarine resident species (seven species). The marine species were found all along the saline gradient and throughout the sampling period indicating the salinity ingress towards the estuarine zone throughout the year. Carnivores and omnivores were the major feeding mode functional guilds in terms of diversity, whereas detritivores dominated in numerical abundance throughout the salinity gradient. The major environmental drivers of the fish assemblages in the estuary were salinity and chlorophyll a. The distribution of freshwater fishes and estuarine resident species was connected with the rising primary productivity as the majority of fishes rely on the algae for feeding, whereas marine estuarine dependent and marine estuarine opportunist species occurred in areas with the highest salinity concentrations.

Fish assemblage and guild structure in the Ashtamudi Estuary, a tropical Ramsar site in India

A first hand study on guild structure of fish species (n = 148) in Ashtamudi Estuary, a Ramsar Site of International importance, was carried out from May 2019 to April 2020 based on temporal (monsoon, pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons) and spatial (upper, middle and lower zones) data. Guild composition consisted of eight estuarine use guilds (marine estuarine opportunist, marine estuarine dependent, estuarine resident species, anadromous species, freshwater migrants, freshwater stragglers, catadromous and marine stragglers) and eight feeding guilds (zooplanktivore, zoobenthivore, carnivores, herbivores, invertebrate feeders, omnivores, detritus feeders and piscivores). The most dominant estuarine use guilds comprised of marine migrants (marine estuarine opportunist and marine estuarine dependent), whereas carnivore, omnivore and zooplanktivore formed the dominant feeding guilds in Ashtamudi Estuary. The species diversity decreased from upper to lower zone and was highest during the post-monsoon period. The present study has seen a decrease in estuarine resident and freshwater species due to reduced freshwater inflow, saltwater intrusion, unsustainable fishing and inadequate environmental management practices. Hence, we propose a management framework to improve the ecosystem of Ashtamudi Estuary with a special focus on its fish species and their estuarine use.

Biomass and productivity of fishes in estuaries: a South African case study

Estuaries are well known for their role as nutrient and detrital sinks that stimulate high levels of both primary and secondary production which, in turn, support a large biomass of fishes per unit area. This study reviews available information on coastal fish biomasses (g m^-2 wet mass) and productivity (g m^-2 wet mass year^-1 ) in order to place South African data on these topics into a global perspective. Using biogeographic fish productivity estimates, together with estuarine water area, the approximate annual teleost production in South African estuaries was calculated at 585, 1706 and 13 904 t in the cool temperate, warm temperate and subtropical regions, respectively. Total annual fish production in estuaries on the subcontinent is conservatively estimated at 16 195 t, but this figure is likely to fluctuate widely, depending on recruitment success and annual environmental conditions pertaining to these systems. Approximately 2000 t of fish are estimated to be harvested by fishing activities in South African estuaries each year, which represents c. 12% of annual fish production. Although this figure may appear sustainable, the reality is that there are a few heavily targeted estuary-associated marine species at the top of the food chain that are being overexploited by both anglers and subsistence fishermen. Natural mortalities due to piscivorous fish and bird predation has been estimated at c. 3% of total fish biomass per month in the East Kleinemonde Estuary, but this figure will vary considerably depending on bird abundance and foraging patterns along the coast. In contrast to catches made by the fishermen, piscivorous fishes and birds are targeting mainly juvenile marine fish and small estuarine resident species that are very abundant and generally low down in the food web.

Trophic segregation of a fish assemblage along lateral depth gradients in a subtropical coastal lagoon revealed by stable isotope analyses

Stable isotopes were used to evaluate the hypothesis that fish assemblages occurring in shallow and deep areas of a large coastal lagoon are structured in partially segregated trophic modules with consumers showing contrasting reliance on benthic or pelagic food sources. The results revealed that fishes in deep areas were mainly dependent on particulate organic matter in the sediment (SOM), whereas emergent macrophytes were as important as SOM to fish consumers in shallow areas. Conceptual trophic diagrams depicting relationships among basal food sources and consumers in different regions of the lagoon highlighted the greater use of multiple basal food sources by more feeding mode functional guilds in shallow water compared with the use of predominantly benthic resources (SOM) in deep areas. The findings appear to corroborate the initial hypothesis and offer complementary perspectives in understanding the role of spatial ecology in structuring coastal ecosystem function and productivity.
