Canine Blood Group Prevalence and Geographical Distribution around the World: An Updated Systematic Review

In recent years, blood transfusions have been more commonly given to pets. The importance of determining blood groups in dogs and cats is, therefore, well-known for reducing the risk of adverse reactions in the recipient blood caused by a "non-compatible" donor. This systematic review summarizes data from previously published reports and follows the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines for systematic reviews. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, we identified 41 eligible studies using different states and blood-typing methods to determine blood groups in dogs. The dog blood groups that were identified between 1999 and 2020 in 17 different countries were combined to yield the DEA (Dog Erythrocyte Antigen), Kai, and Dal groups. These studies were conducted in Europe, America, Africa, and Asia but not in all the countries of these continents. The methods used to determine blood types have also changed over the years. This systematic review highlights gaps in the literature and should advance future studies synthesizing data with methodological rigor.

Expansion of the canine A blood group system

A detailed study of the canine A blood group system was undertaken, resulting in the expansion of this system into a three-factor, four-allelic one with the recognition of an additional subtype, a3. The serological and extensive family data supported the proposed genetic theory of four alleles with dominance with the order being Aa1, Aa2, Aa3 and A-. Gene frequencies of the alleles were determined in various breeds of dogs with frequencies in the general Brisbane population being 0.244 (Aa1), 0.042 (Aa2), 0.045 (Aa3) and 0.669 (A-).

Canine blood groups: description of 20 specificities

Twenty blood typing reagents, four agglutinins and 16 operable in the antiglobulin test, were prepared from 54 antisera which were produced in 24 dogs. Two of the reagents were identified as anti-B and Nf6. Two of the antigens were shown by absorption and family studies to be linear subtypes. In most cases, detailed family studies demonstrated a Mendelian dominant inheritance for the genes controlling the canine red cell antigens. Gene frequencies were determined in various breeds of dogs and in the dingo.

Parentage testing of dogs using variants of blood proteins: description of five new plasma protein polymorphisms

Plasma samples of 1126 dogs belonging to 21 different European breeds were analysed by two-dimensional agarose gel (pH 5.4 or pH 8.6)--horizontal polyacrylamide gel (pH 9.0) electrophoresis, followed by general-protein staining of gels. Genetic polymorphism was detected for five as yet unidentified proteins designated pretransferrin-1 and -2 (Prt1 and Prt2) and postalbumin-1, -2 and -3 (Pa1, Pa2 and Pa3). Three alleles are reported in the Prt1 and Prt2 systems and two alleles in the Prt2, Pa1 and Pa3 systems. While Prt2 variation was observed only in the cocker spaniel breed, each of the other four proteins showed a high degree of polymorphism in most of the breeds studied. Pa3 fractions were clearly observed only in samples stored at -20 degrees C for more than 2 years. Prt1, Pa1 and Pa2 proteins are additional useful markers for parentage control in dogs. This study corroborated previously published results that dog plasma proteins, in general, show considerably more polymorphism than that reported for haemoglobin and for several blood cell enzymes in this species.

Importance of blood groups and blood group antibodies in companion animals

Dogs, cats, birds, and ferrets are popular companion animals. Because these pets are considered by many to be family members, they are provided high-quality veterinary medical care, including blood transfusions. This article reviews the current status of blood groups in dogs, cats, birds, and ferrets and discusses the impact of blood groups on veterinary transfusion medicine. One blood group with 3 types has been described in the cat, whereas multiple blood groups have been described in the dog. Only rudimentary knowledge exists regarding pet bird blood groups, and, to date, the ferret appears to be unique because no blood groups have been described. Antibodies against blood group antigens also play a role in animal blood transfusions. Cats have naturally occurring alloantibodies; however, dogs do not appear to have clinically significant naturally occurring alloantibodies. Understanding the issues related to blood groups and blood group antibodies in companion animals will also benefit those using these species as research models for human diseases.

Reactivity of lichen lectins with blood typed canine erythrocytes

Extracts from 69 species of lichens were tested for their ability to agglutinate untreated and enzyme-modified erythrocytes from a panel of blood typed dogs. Forty-three lichen species reacted positively with either untreated or enzyme-modified cells. Many extracts exhibited differential agglutination among red cells tested. The patterns of differential agglutination observed with the lichen extracts did not correspond to known canine blood groups present on the test red cell panel.
