Plasma aluminium in a reference population: the effects of antacid consumption and its influence on biochemical indices of bone formation

Trace element levels in adults from the west coast of Canada and associations with age, gender, diet, activities, and levels of other trace elements

The purpose of this study was to assess trace element levels in whole blood, serum and urine of 61 non-smoking adults living on the west coast of Canada and to determine their association with the following variables: age, gender, diet, participation in certain hobby and/or occupational activities, and levels of other trace elements. Participants or their spouses were employed as oyster growers and were originally recruited to study the absorption of cadmium from oyster consumption. Trace elements were measured using inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry. A telephone interview was used to assess participant's intake of selected foods and the amount of time they have spent on certain activities over the lifetime. Comparison of results to previous studies revealed that blood lead, blood mercury, serum nickel, serum selenium and urine molybdenum levels were generally higher in this study than have previously been measured, possibly due to higher consumption of seafood in this sample. Men had statistically higher levels of serum iron, blood lead, and serum selenium, while women had statistically higher levels of serum copper and blood manganese. Blood lead levels increased with age. Diet had a statistically significant association with several elements. Consumption of spinach, seaweed, organ meats, and shellfish tended to be positively correlated with trace element concentrations and consumption of various forms of potatoes tended to be negatively correlated. Several statistically significant correlations were also observed between trace elements.

Bone turnover in short-term and long-term home parenteral nutrition for benign disease

6 mo afterward. Long-HPN was assessed only at baseline. In short-HPN, there was a hyperkinetic turnover at baseline. At follow-up, OC was similar to baseline, whereas cross-links, urinary calcium and magnesium decreased (P < 0.03), and parathyroid hormone increased (P < 0.001). The variation of urinary calcium correlated with that of cross-links (r = 0.73, P < 0.04). In long-HPN, OC was low or low-normal in almost all the patients, and cross-links were normal. Mean OC was lower than that of short-HPN both at baseline (P < 0. 003) and at follow-up (P < 0.002). The results suggest that in the early period of HPN bone metabolism improved from a hyperkinetic turnover to a positive balance. A low bone-formation rate appeared to be a characteristic feature of long-term HPN.

Does aluminium stimulate the immune system in male rats after oral exposure?

The influence of oral aluminium exposure on the immune system was studied in rats. Male rats were exposed to soluble and labile Al in acidic drinking water (0-500 mg Al/l) for 7-9 weeks. The concentration of Al in femur bone was higher in rats exposed to 50 and 500 mg Al/l (mean concentration 277 and 599 ng Al/g) than in control rats (150 ng Al/g). The Al concentration in blood plasma could only be quantified in the 500 mg/l group (mean 2.7 ng/ml), whereas the concentrations in the control and 50 mg/l groups were low (< 2 ng Al/ml). Exposure of 4-13-weeks-old rats to the highest Al concentration caused an increased number of splenocytes, whereas exposure of 9-16-weeks-old rats to 500 mg Al/l caused an increased number of thymocytes. Moreover, the proliferative response of splenocytes to the mitogen Con A (2 micrograms/ml) was increased by exposure of the 9-16-weeks-old rats to 500 mg Al/l as compared with the controls. The results indicate that oral Al exposure caused a slight stimulation of some immune functions in the rat at Al plasma concentrations normally found in the human population (< 10 ng Al/ml).

Biological indicators of exposure to total and respirable aluminium dust fractions in a primary aluminium smelter

OBJECTIVES

The study attempts to define biological indicators of aluminium uptake and excretion in workers exposed to airborne aluminium compounds in a primary aluminium smelter. Also, this study defines the total and respirable aluminium dust fractions in two different potrooms, and correlates their concentrations with biological indicators in this group of workers.

METHODS

Air was sampled at defined work sites. Non-destructive and conventional techniques were used to find total and respirable aluminium content of the dust. Blood and urine was collected from 84 volunteers employed at various work stations throughout the smelter and from two different cohorts of controls matched for sex, age, and socioeconomic status. Aluminium in serum samples and urine specimens was measured by flameless atomic absorption with a PE 4100 ZL spectrometer.

RESULTS

The correlation of aluminium concentrations in serum and urine samples with the degree of exposure was assessed for three arbitrary exposure categories; low (0.036 mg Al/m3), medium (0.35 mg Al/m3) and high (1.47 mg Al/m3) as found in different areas of the smelter. At medium and high exposure, the ratio of respirable to total aluminium in the dust samples varied significantly. At high exposure, serum aluminium, although significantly raised, was still within the normal range of an unexposed population. The workers with low exposure excreted aluminium in urine at levels significantly higher than the controls, but still within the normal range of the population. However, potroom workers with medium and high exposure had significantly higher urinary aluminium than the normal range.

CONCLUSIONS

It is concluded that only urinary aluminium constitutes a practical index of occupational exposure at or above 0.35 mg Al/m3, and that the respirable fraction of the dust may play a major role in the biological response to exposure to aluminium in a smelter environment.
