Abstract
AIM Digestive stoma are frequently performed. The last French guidelines have been published twenty years ago. Our aim was to update French clinical practice guidelines for the perioperative management of digestive stoma and stoma-related complications. METHODS A systematic literature review of French and English articles published between January 2000 and May 2022 was performed. Only digestive stoma for fecal evacuation in adults were considered. Stoma in children, urinary stoma, digestive stoma for enteral nutrition, and rare stoma (Koch, perineal) were not included. RESULTS Guidelines include the surgical landmarks to create digestive stoma (ideal location, mucocutaneous anastomosis, utility of support rods, use of prophylactic mesh), the perioperative clinical practice guidelines (patient education, preoperative ostomy site marking, postoperative equipment, prescriptions, and follow-up), the management of early stoma-related complications (difficulties for nursing, high output, stoma necrosis, retraction, abscess and peristomal skin complications), and the management of late stoma-related complications (stoma prolapse, parastomal hernia, stoma stenosis, late stoma retraction). A level of evidence was assigned to each statement. CONCLUSION These guidelines will be very useful in clinical practice, and allow to delete some outdated dogma.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer is typically treated through surgery, and self-care skills play a crucial role in disease adaptation and quality of life improvement. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a multimedia patient education intervention on enhancing the self-care and quality of life among patients with a postoperative stoma as well as on establishing an easy-to-use ostomy self-care skills assessment. The sample comprised 108 patients with new ostomies who were randomly assigned to two groups. Data were collected from June 2018 to March 2019. The conventional education service program group received individual education in the hospital environment, consisting of four 3-h sessions delivered over 4 consecutive days. The multimedia group viewed a multimedia educational program using a laptop. Data were collected at baseline and 3 months after the intervention using a demographic questionnaire, an ostomy self-care ability scale and the Stoma Quality of Life Scale. Before the intervention, there were no significant differences in self-care ability and quality of life scores between the two groups (p = 0.764 and p = 0.466, respectively). However, 3 months after the intervention, the group that received the multimedia software intervention showed significantly higher self-care ability and quality of life scores compared to the group that received conventional education services (p < 0.001). When a set threshold is reached, self-care ability and a good quality of life can be met. The threshold value of the ostomy self-care skill scale was determined to be 20 points, resulting in a sensitivity of 77.8% and a specificity of 75.5%. The results indicate that the multimedia education program enhanced home self-care ability and quality of life among patients with enterostomy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the impact of a mobile health patient engagement technology (PET) on postoperative outcomes in gynecologic oncology patients. METHODS All gynecologic oncology patients undergoing laparotomy on an enhanced recovery program (ERP) were approached from July 2019 to May 2021 to enroll in a PET, which can be accessed by computer, tablet, or smart phone. This platform provides enhanced pre- and postoperative patient education and remote patient monitoring. Patients who elected to participate were provided with targeted education based on their age and comorbidities and were asked to complete daily health checks during the postoperative period. Participants in the PET were compared to patients who opted out as well as to a historical cohort from prior to PET implementation. Patient and procedure-level factors were recorded. The primary outcomes were length of stay (LOS) and 30-day readmission rate. Analysis was performed using SPSS v.26. RESULTS 682 women met inclusion criteria during the study time; 347 in the PET group and 335 in the control group. Demographic and other factors including race, BMI (kg/m2), Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), surgical complexity, and insurance status were not different between the PET and control group; however, patients in the PET cohort were slightly younger (55.0 yo vs. 57.2 yo; p = 0.04). Patients in the PET group had a significantly shorter LOS (2.9 days vs. 3.6 days; p < 0.01) and lower readmission rate (4.3% vs. 8.6%; p < 0.01) when compared with the control group. CONCLUSIONS Use of a PET in our gynecologic oncology patients decreased LOS by nearly one day despite an absence of differences in other demographic and surgical factors other than age. Furthermore, there was a 50% reduction in readmission rates in the PET group. The use of a PET allows for healthcare professionals to engage, evaluate, and treat patients in a way that improves perioperative care.

Abstract
Because nurse aides are one of the first-line care providers in hospitals, they should possess better knowledge, attitude, and behavioral intention toward COVID-19 during the pandemic. This study aimed to compare the improvements of COVID-19-related education on learning outcomes between multimedia-based and traditional face-to-face learning models for nurse aides. The parallel-group randomized controlled trial recruited 74 participants in both the experimental and control groups. Two 90 min interventions with the same contents, but in different ways, were delivered. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data of demographic information, knowledge, attitude, and behavioral intention toward COVID-19 before and after the interventions. Results from generalized estimation equations analysis indicated that the nurse aides in the multimedia-based learning group had greater improvement in the scores of knowledge (difference in change: 3.2, standard error: 0.97, p < 0.001), attitude (difference in change: 10.2, standard error: 2.97, p < 0.001), and behavioral intention (difference in change: 0.5, standard error: 0.04, p < 0.001) than those in the face-to-face learning group. During the outbreak of COVID-19, multimedia-based learning as an effective learning method could improve the learning outcomes related to COVID-19 and achieve learning goals without close contact.

Abstract
AIMS Explore the evidence from randomized controlled trials for the effect of self-management interventions on quality of life, self-management skills and self-efficacy, and to explore which intervention characteristics are associated with effectiveness. DESIGN Systematic review. DATA SOURCES A search of the literature was conducted in these databases: MEDLINE (OVID), EMBASE (OVID) and PsychINFO (OVID) from January 2000 to February 2020. REVIEW METHODS Studies were included if participants had a bowel stoma, were over the age of 18 and the design was a randomized controlled trial of a self-management programme. The outcome measures for this review were quality of life, self-management skills and self-efficacy. The Behaviour Change Technique Taxonomy was used to code interventions for underlying components and alongside other intervention characteristics, associations with improvements in outcomes were explored. RESULTS The search identified 3141 articles, 16 of which were eligible. A meta-analysis of self-efficacy scores from five studies (N = 536) found an improvement in those that received the self-management intervention at follow-up with a 12-point mean difference compared with the usual care group. Effects on quality of life and self-management skills were mixed, and meta-analyses of these data were not possible. Across 13 studies an average of 10 behaviour change techniques were used with, credible source (e.g. nurse, doctor, therapist) (n = 13), instruction on how to perform the behaviour (n = 13), demonstration of the behaviour (n = 12) used most often. The behaviour change technique of self-monitoring was associated with an improvement in quality of life. The involvement of a nurse was associated with higher self-efficacy and self-management skills. CONCLUSION This review suggests that self-management interventions can increase peoples' self-efficacy for managing their stoma. IMPACT A standardized approach to the reporting of interventions and the measures used is needed in future studies to better understand the effect on quality of life and self-management skills.

Abstract
Objective Evaluating the effectiveness of structured education on patient's knowledge and practice regarding colostomy care. Methods A quasi-experimental study design (pre-posttest) was utilized to fulfill the aim of the study. The study was carried out in the outpatient surgery clinic at South Egypt Cancer Institute; a nonprobability convenient sample of 60 adult male and female colostomy patients was included in the study. Two tools were utilized; Tool I: A structured interviewing questionnaire sheet, including three parts: Part I: Demographic characteristics of the studied patients, Part II: Assessment of colostomy, and Part III: Patients' knowledge regarding colostomy (pre-post); Tool II: A colostomy care observation checklist (pre/post). Results A highly statistically significant difference was found regarding total knowledge and practice scores of the studied sample pre- and post-application of the structured patient education. Conclusions On light of the present study results, it can be concluded that structured patient education was found to be effective in enhancing patient's knowledge and practices, regarding stoma and peristomal skin care.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to describe the lived experiences of patients with ostomies participating in a support group. DESIGN Qualitative, descriptive, phenomenological study. SUBJECT AND SETTING Fifteen adults with different types of ostomies were recruited from support groups in the state of Georgia. METHODS Semistructured interviews were digitally audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Analyses of data were performed using Parse's 5-step thematic analysis. RESULTS Four major themes and 10 subthemes emerged from the interviews: (1) theme 1-support group gives hope and changes lives, with 2 subthemes of increased knowledge and provided new knowledge and allows open communication; (2) theme 2-changes in body image had 2 subthemes, some things are different and everyone is the same; (3) theme 3-I am not alone resulted in 4 subthemes of feeling of belonging, willingness to be helped, being supported, and developing lifelong relationships; and (4) theme 4-being independent manifested 2 subthemes including confidence in rejoining society, and building confidence and decreased shame. CONCLUSION We found that participation in an ostomy support group allowed individuals with ostomies to function at more advanced levels than they were before participating in the support group. The lived experiences were characterized by hope, willingness to live fully again, participating in different activities, and making new friends. Participants shared their positive experiences with others who were experiencing the same problems they once experienced. These findings add to and support the body of knowledge related to the interactions between nurses and individuals with ostomies as well as the care needed to ensure a safe discharge from the acute care facility. New knowledge gained may help in the improvement of the education provided during hospitalization. Providing this information will equip patients and families with a better understanding of and methods to care for their new ostomies and develop an acceptance of their new health status.

From Traditional to VR-Based Online Education Platforms: A Model of the Mechanism Influencing User Migration. INFORMATION 2020. Abstract
VR technology can help create optimal virtual learning spaces. Such spaces offer new visual experiences that break through the limitations of time and space and greatly stimulate people’s imagination and creativity in learning. Currently, the bandwidth required for such spaces limits the large-scale application of virtual reality (VR) technology for this purpose. With the large-scale deployment and application of high-speed networks, however, online education platforms based on VR technology will be better able to meet the diversified and personalized learning needs of learners. To promote the development and popularization of new online education platforms based on VR, the factors influencing the migration of learners from traditional online education platforms to new platforms need to be understood more clearly. A model based on the theory of negative, positive, and anchoring effects can explain learners’ migration behavior in this connection. To this end, a structural equation model based on the PLS variance algorithm was used to analyze data obtained through offline and online questionnaires. It was found that in terms of “negative effects”, the afunction and loyalty associated with traditional online education platforms reduced learners’ willingness to migrate to new platforms based on VR technology. In terms of “positive effects”, the novel interactivity and personalization brought by the new platform increased the willingness of users of traditional platforms to migrate to new platforms. In terms of “anchoring effects”, the system quality and relationship quality of learners’ use of traditional online education platforms, as well as the transfer costs associated with the new platform, generated learners’ risk perception about platform migration. In addition, risk perception not only negatively affects learners’ migration to the new platforms, but also strengthens their cognition of the system quality and relationship quality of the traditional platforms, while reducing their interactive awareness of those platforms. Therefore, by adjusting the psychological component of virtual learning, the online education platforms based on VR technology can create high-quality platforms migrating from traditional platforms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to analyse the relationship between patient education and the quality of surgical nursing care as perceived by patients. The background of the study lies in the importance of a patient-centred approach for both patient education and quality evaluation. DESIGN This was a cross-sectional descriptive correlational study with surgical patients. SETTING Data were collected in 2013 in one hospital district in Finland. PARTICIPANTS 480 hospitalised surgical patients. METHODS The data were collected using two structured instruments: one measuring the perceived quality of nursing care experienced by patients (Good Nursing Care Scale) and one measuring the received knowledge of hospital patients (RKhp). Data were analysed statistically using descriptive and inferential statistics to describe the sample and study variables. Pearson's correlation coefficients were used to analyse the association between the scales. RESULTS Surgical hospital patients evaluated the level of the quality of nursing care as high; this was especially true with reference to the environment and staff characteristics, but not to collaboration with family members. Most (85%) of the patients had received sufficient knowledge preoperatively and they were familiar with the proceeding of their care and treatment after discharge; in particular, they had received bio-physiological knowledge, consisting of knowledge of the disease, symptoms and the physiological elements of care. The positive correlation between the perceived quality of surgical nursing care and received knowledge was strong, suggesting a positive relationship between patient education and improvement of the quality of nursing care. CONCLUSIONS Based on the results, the quality of nursing care and patient education are interconnected. Thus, by improving patient education, the quality of nursing care can also be improved. It is particularly important to improve collaboration with family members and patients' own management strategies as well as the multidimensionality of educational knowledge.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To describe the various types of patient education interventions for colorectal cancer patients with stoma and to examine their effects on quality of life, psychosocial skills and self-management skills. METHODS A systematic review was performed. Six electronic databases were searched. Inclusion criteria were: studies about patient education applying quantitative methods including digestive stoma adults with colorectal cancer. The primary outcome was quality of life. Secondary outcomes were psychosocial and self-management skills. RESULTS Thirteen studies were identified and included. Five studies examined quality of life and three reported improvements. Patient education improved some psychosocial and self-management skills. Contrasting findings were reported for specific-disease quality of life, emotional distress, length of hospital stay, stoma complications and readmission rate. CONCLUSIONS Patient education has a positive impact on some psychosocial and self-management skills, indicating that this area should be developed. Contrasting findings were reported for quality of life. Methodologies are heterogeneous making it difficult to produce evidence-based guidelines. This article proposes tools to carry out further studies on this subject and to improve understanding. PRACTICE IMPLICATION Further education intervention for stoma patients with colorectal cancer should be standardized in terms of intervention, duration and outcome measures to compare intervention and determine best practice.

Abstract
The frequency of ostomy surgery in Canada is not known, but it is estimated that approximately 13,000 ostomy surgeries are performed annually in Canada. This systematic review incorporates evidence for the assessment and management of colostomies, ileostomies, and urostomies, as well as the peristomal skin. The review was completed as part of a best practice guideline document generated by a task force appointed by the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stoma-related complications lead to increased hospital length of stay and readmissions. Although education of new ostomates is widely recommended, there is a lack of data regarding effective evidence-based educational interventions to prevent or decrease these complications. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature for educational interventions for new ostomates designed to decrease stoma-related complications. DATA SOURCES PubMed was searched for studies on educational interventions for new ostomates. STUDY SELECTION Studies were included if they were in English, targeted adult stoma patients, and evaluated an educational intervention at the time of stoma creation. INTERVENTION Educational interventions were performed. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The outcomes of interest were length of stay, complications, and readmissions. RESULTS We found 1706 articles of which 7 met the inclusion criteria. Two were randomized controlled trials, and the rest were cohort studies. The overall quality of the studies was low. Each study used a unique intervention. However, all incorporated a specialized colorectal or ostomy nurse. Of the 5 studies that evaluated length of stay, 2 found a reduction in length of stay associated with the intervention, but 3 found no difference. Two studies found a reduction in complications, but 2 found no difference. Of the 3 studies that evaluated readmissions, none found a difference in the intervention group compared with the control group. LIMITATIONS This study is limited by the search of a single database and the inclusion of only English language studies. CONCLUSION Education is a key component of patient care; however, evidence to support an improvement in clinical outcomes is lacking. Further study is needed by the use of rigorous designs to craft a feasible educational intervention that will lead to improved patient care and outcomes.

Abstract
Introduction Adaptation to living with a stoma is complex, and studies have shown that stoma creation has a great impact on patients' health related quality of life. The objective was to explore the effect of a structured patient education program on health related quality of life. Therefore, we implemented interventions aimed at increasing health related quality of life during and after hospital admission. Materials and Methods We designed a case/control study aimed at adult patients admitted to the surgical ward for stoma creation, irrespective of type of stoma or reason for creation of stoma. We included 50 patients in the study. Health related quality of life was measured before hospital discharge, three months and six months after stoma creation. The program included educational interventions involving lay-teachers, alongside health professional teachers. Results We found a significant rise in health related quality of life in the intervention group (P<0.001) and no significant change in the control group (P = 0.144). However, we found no significant differences when comparing between groups at 3 and 6 months (p = 0.12 and p = 0.63, respective). Additionally, there were differences in scores in health related quality of life baseline (p = 0.045) with lower scores in the intervention group compared with the intervention group. However, there were no significant differences in the demographic variables at baseline Conclusions Educational activities aimed at increase in knowledge and focusing on patients' psychosocial needs may lead to a rise in patients' health related quality of life. When patients with a stoma attend a structured patient education program it is possible to improve their health related quality of life compared with patients with a stoma, who do not attend the program. Abstract
This study describes knowledge tests in patient education through a systematic review of the Medline, Cinahl, PsycINFO, and ERIC databases with the guidance of the PRISMA Statement. Forty-nine knowledge tests were identified. The contents were health-problem related, focusing on biophysiological and functional knowledge. The mean number of items was 20, with true-false or multiple-choice scales. Most of the tests were purposely designed for the studies included in the review. The most frequently reported quality assessments of knowledge tests were content validity and internal consistency. The outcome measurements for patient-education needs were comprehensive, validating knowledge tests that cover multidimensional aspects of knowledge. Besides the measurement of the outcomes of patient education, knowledge tests could be used for several purposes in patient education: to guide the content of education as checklists, to monitor the learning process, and as educational tools. There is a need for more efficient content and health problem-specific knowledge-test assessments.

Abstract
AIM A systematic review was performed to assess whether education of patients having stoma formation improves quality of life and whether it is cost effective. METHOD A literature search was performed to identify studies on the structured education of ostomates and outcome using the following databases: MEDLINE, Cinahl, Embase, Cochrane and PsycInfo. Inclusion criteria were: clinical studies reporting effects of educational interventions in relation to patients with a stoma. Commentaries or studies not testing an intervention were excluded. RESULTS Seven articles met the inclusion criteria of having rigorously evaluated an educational programme related to living with a stoma. The programmes were organized in different ways and had explored various interventions. The results showed an increase in health-related quality of life, as measured using a stoma quality of life instrument (P = 0.00001) and with the Short Form 36 (SF-36) (P = 0.000-0.006), an increase in proficiency in management of the stoma (P = 0.0005), two studies pointed to a reduction in postoperative hospital stay (8 days vs 10 days, P = 0.029; and 8 days vs 14 days, P = 0.17), a significant reduction in cost in the intervention group ($US 8570.54) compared with the control group ($US 7396.90) as well as higher effectiveness scores in the intervention group (166.89) compared with the control group (110.98), a significant rise in stoma-related knowledge (P = 0.0000) and an increase in psychosocial adjustment (P = 0.000). CONCLUSION Structured patient education aimed at patients' psychosocial needs seems to have a positive effect on quality of life as well as on cost. The interventions may be performed before, during or after hospital stay. However, the available data come from few studies with differences in interventions and in study design, and further studies are therefore needed before a final conclusion can be drawn.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore healthcare professionals' views about the benefits and challenges of using information technology (IT) resources for educating patients about their warfarin therapy. METHODS A cross-sectional survey of both community and hospital-based healthcare professionals (e.g., doctors, pharmacists and nurses) involved using a purpose-designed questionnaire. The questionnaires were distributed using a multi-modal approach to maximise response rates. RESULTS Of the total 300 questionnaires distributed, 109 completed surveys were received (43.3% response rate). Over half (53.2%) of the healthcare participants were aged between 40-59 years, the majority (59.5%) of whom were female. Fifty nine (54.1%) participants reported having had no access to warfarin-specific IT-based patient education resources, and a further 19 (38.0%) of the participants who had IT-access reported that they never used such resources. According to the healthcare participants, the main challenges associated with educating their patients about warfarin therapy included: patient-related factors, such as older age, language barriers, cognitive impairments and/or ethnic backgrounds or healthcare professional factors, such as time constraints. The healthcare professionals reported that there were several aspects about warfarin therapy which they found difficult to educate their patients about which is why they identified computers and interactive touch screen kiosks as preferred IT devices to deliver warfarin education resources in general practices, hospital-based clinics and community pharmacies. At the same time, the healthcare professionals also identified a number of facilitators (e.g., to reinforce warfarin education, to offer reliable and easily comprehensible information) and barriers (e.g., time and costs of using IT resources, difficulty in operating the resources) that could impact on the effective implementation of these devices in educating patients about their warfarin therapy. CONCLUSIONS The findings of the study suggest that there is a need for improving healthcare professionals' use of, and access to IT-based warfarin education resources for patients. The study findings also suggest addressing the concerns raised by the healthcare professionals when implementing such IT resources successfully to help educate patients about their warfarin therapy.

Abstract
Background Behavioral interventions typically focus on objective behavioral endpoints like weight loss and smoking cessation. In reality, though, achieving full behavior change is a complex process in which several steps towards success are taken. Any progress in this process may also be considered as a beneficial outcome of the intervention, assuming that this increases the likelihood to achieve successful behavior change eventually. Until recently, there has been little consideration about whether partial behavior change at follow-up should be incorporated in cost-effectiveness analyses (CEAs). The aim of this explorative review is to identify CEAs of behavioral interventions in which cognitive outcome measures of behavior change are analyzed. Methods Data sources were searched for publications before May 2011. Results Twelve studies were found eligible for inclusion. Two different approaches were found: three studies calculated separate incremental cost-effectiveness ratios for cognitive outcome measures, and one study modeled partial behavior change into the final outcome. Both approaches rely on the assumption, be it implicitly or explicitly, that changes in cognitive outcome measures are predictive of future behavior change and may affect CEA outcomes. Conclusion Potential value of cognitive states in CEA, as a way to account for partial behavior change, is to some extent recognized but not (yet) integrated in the field. In conclusion, CEAs should consider, and where appropriate incorporate measures of partial behavior change when reporting effectiveness and hence cost-effectiveness.
