Abstract
Aim: This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and use of traditional and complementary medicine among medical students.
Methods: The study was conducted among 160 (80 females, 80 males) medical students who are studying in their last year of Medical School at Trakya University. The questionnaire used for the study consists of 3 sections and 19 questions. The data collected provided the following: an overview of the study groups, students' general perceptions and knowledge of traditional and complementary medicine, and a comparison of students' knowledge, attitudes, and use of traditional and complementary medicine.
Results: One hundred and sixty questionnaires were filled and returned. Traditional and complementary medicine was performed on 47 (29.4%) (22 men, 25 women) of the 160 students who participated in this study. The most well-known traditional and complementary medicine methods among medical students were acupuncture, ozone therapy, and mesotherapy. The majority of students had positive attitudes toward traditional and complementary medicine and acknowledged its potential benefits, but reported limited knowledge of the subject.
Conclusion: Utilization of traditional and complementary medicine was relatively low among students, as the majority of students relied on mainstream medicine for their health needs. These findings highlight the need for increased education and training in traditional and complementary medicine for medical students to ensure that they can address the health needs of patients who use traditional and complementary medicine.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acupuncture and acupressure are not being systematically used in the management of postoperative nausea and vomiting and pain, despite being included in the guidelines. AIM To examine the beliefs, attitudes, and knowledge of Australian nurses/midwives and doctors toward the perioperative use of AA for the management of postoperative nausea and vomiting and pain; to explore the barriers and enablers influencing acupuncture and acupressure integration into hospital setting. METHODS A mixed-mode approach was undertaken for data collection. An online approach was used to recruit respondents from Australian College of Perioperative Nurses. Three hospitals from three different Australian states were selected via convenience sampling. RESULTS A total of 421 usable surveys were included in data analysis. The respondents comprised 14.3% doctors and 72.9% nurses/midwives. Overall, 69.4% were female, 85% were trained in Australia with 35% and 51.4% having knowledge or personal exposure to AA in general respectively. Over 60% of the respondents agreed AA should be routinely integrated into perioperative care, and over 80% would recommend AA to their patients if it was provided at their hospital, and, 75% would be willing to receive further education. The three main reported barriers included: perceived lack of scientific evidence (80.9%), unavailability of credentialed provider (77.2%) and lack of reimbursement (60.4%). CONCLUSIONS Positive attitudes are reported by Australian doctors and nurses toward AA. This is despite of low levels of knowledge or personal exposure to AA. Further studies are required to explore the implementation of barriers and address respondent calls for further education.

Abstract
Background The globally growing demand for complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has attracted educators' attention to integrate CAM into conventional nursing programs. This systematic review aimed to understand the status quo of nursing students (NSs)' overall rated knowledge of, attitude/belief toward, and practice/previous use or experience (KAP) of CAM in surveys, given these factors may influence NSs' receptivity to CAM curricula, and may be of value in guiding the development of effective teaching strategies. Methods Formally published cross-sectional quantitative studies investigating the primary outcome of KAP toward CAM by NSs were searched for from eight databases from their inception through to 28 April 2022. PRISMA 2020 guidelines were followed. Results Twenty-six studies were included for analysis, 25 of which were judged to be of moderate to high quality. Despite limited and poorly informed knowledge of CAM therapies, the majority of NSs generally viewed them in a positive light. Furthermore, NSs usually reported an interest in further learning, and supported and welcomed the integration of CAM curricula, at least as elective modules, into existing nursing programs. Lack of evidence was perceived as a major barrier to the use or integration of CAM. Mass media and the internet were the main sources via which NSs access CAM information. Measurement of KAP in all included studies was via self-designed questionnaires/scales or adapted from previously developed questionnaires/scales. Conclusions The need for integrating and strengthening CAM curricula into current nursing education is identified. Besides theoretical knowledge and matched clinical placement, skills training in literature searching and evidence-based practice are advised to be included in the curricula design. The experiential learning mode is strongly recommended for delivering specific CAM modalities. In addition, a standard instrumentation for determining NSs' KAP toward CAM should be designed and examined for use in different cultural settings. Abstract
BACKGROUND Mitochondrial ATP production requires a small electron carrier, coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), which has been used as adjunctive therapy in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and hypertension (HTN) because of its bioenergetics and antioxidant properties. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) beyond the last 2 decades evaluating CoQ10 added to conventional therapy resulted in mixed results and were underpowered to address major clinical endpoints. OBJECTIVES The objective of this systematic review was to examine the impact of CoQ10 supplementation on older adults with CVD or HTN in the last 2 decades (2000-2020). METHODS PubMed/Medline, Cochrane Database, CINAHL, and Google Scholar databases were searched systematically, and references from selected studies were manually reviewed, to identify RCTs or crossover studies evaluating the efficacy of CoQ10 supplementation. Data extracted from selected studies included trial design and duration, treatment, dose, participant characteristics, study variables, and important findings. RESULTS A total of 14 studies (1067 participants) met the inclusion criteria. The effect of CoQ10 supplementation was examined among predominantly older adult males with heart failure (HF) (n = 6), HTN (n = 4), and ischemic heart disease (n = 3), and preoperatively in patients scheduled for cardiac surgery (n = 1). CoQ10 supplementation in patients with HF improved functional capacity, increased serum CoQ10 concentrations, and led to fewer major adverse cardiovascular events. CoQ10 had positive quantifiable effects on inflammatory markers in patients with ischemic heart disease. Myocardial hemodynamics improved in patients who received CoQ10 supplementation before cardiac surgery. Effects on HTN were inconclusive. CONCLUSIONS In predominantly older adult males with CVD or HTN, CoQ10 supplementation added to conventional therapy is safe and offers benefits clinically and at the cellular level. However, results of the trials need to be viewed with caution, and further studies are indicated before widespread usage of CoQ10 is recommended in all older adults.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this study was to determine the predictors of the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in patients with type 2 diabetes based on the health belief model (HBM). Methods This cross-sectional study was performed in 2019 (from April to September) on 837 type 2 diabetic patients by multi-stage sampling method. Valid and reliable tools (questionnaire of using CAM modalities based on the HBM, self-care behavior section, and use of CAM section) were used to collect data. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 24. Results Based on the results, the constructs of the HBM were able to predict 37% of the variance of behavior using CAM. Constructs of perceived threat, perceived barriers, and cues to action had the most significant effect on predicting the behavior of using CAM (p < 0.001). In this study, the mean (±SD) of patients' self-care behaviors were 26.72 (±3.21) (out of a score of 40). Based on the results of the Pearson correlation, a significant positive correlation was observed between perceived threat (r = 0.374) and cues to action (r = 0.303) with using CAM modalities (p < 0.001). There was also a significant negative correlation between perceived barriers and using of CAM (r = -0.589, p < 0.001). Conclusion Based on the obtained results, the HBM is useful in predicting the use of CAM, and due to the significant impact constructs of perceived threat, perceived barriers, and cues to action, it is better to pay more attention to these constructs in educational programs for patients with type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Complementary and Integrative Medicines (CIM) are widely used by adults and children. Despite this, studies have shown that Healthcare Professionals' (HCPs) views about CIM vary. Because underlying knowledge, perceptions and biases may influence HCPs' acceptance of a new aromatherapy program, the investigators sought to assess HCPs' views regarding aromatherapy before implementing an aromatherapy program in a pediatric hospital. DESIGNS AND MEASURES A convenience sample of HCPs at an academic pediatric hospital in the United States completed an investigator developed online questionnaire about their perceptions, knowledge, and use of essential oils. RESULTS The sample included 987 respondents, of which: 62.0% were nurses. Overall, 94.2% of HCPs indicated that they "rarely, never, or seldomly" discussed essential oil use with patients. Most indicated a willingness to incorporate essential oils into their patient care with appropriate education. Furthermore, 47.4% of HCPs reported positive views about the use of essential oils, 4.9% reported negative views and opinions, and 45% raised specific concerns about safety, education and/or evidence. CONCLUSION Overall, this study suggests that HCPs have limited knowledge regarding essential oils, are open to learning more about them, and would like more evidence specifically regarding the efficacy and safety of using essential oils in pediatrics. Additionally, most HCPs are not currently discussing essential oils with pediatric patients. However, they are open to incorporating them into their patients' care if they receive proper education, and are open to our organization implementing an aromatherapy program if appropriate education and safety measures are provided.

Abstract
In recent years, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is more widely known and used globally. This study was the first to investigate undergraduates' attitude toward CAM, and influencing factors and barriers for students to use CAM. Students of five different grades in six universities of China were selected for this study from February to May 2019. First, the participants were divided into two groups based on their majors and fulfilled a previously validated 10-item CAM Health Belief Questionnaire (CHBQ) to evaluate their attitudes toward CAM. Second, the chi-square test was used to analyze the differences between the groups, and correlation analysis was conducted to investigate the relationship of the data between the two groups. Third, we used frequency analysis to identify the types that students wanted to study and the barriers to use CAM. The overall mean score of the CHBQ was 48.87 ± 8.594, which was higher than that in other countries. The students in lower grades had a stronger desire to learn CAM than those in higher grades (89% vs 83%, p < 0.05). “Too time-consuming and bad tastes,” “Western medicine was enough,” and “lack of relevant knowledge” were found to be the main interruptions for students to use CAM. 82.3% of students wanted CAM to be incorporated into the curriculum and desired to learn more about CAM. 72.3% of the students who had never learned CAM wanted to know more about CAM. 55.5% of the students were willing to recommend CAM. Most undergraduates desired to learn more about CAM. It is necessary to introduce or integrate CAM courses into the present curriculum, and it should be started in the lower grades. We hope this study can provide evidence for the authority in China to make appropriate changes and integrate CAM into the college curriculum.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of essential oils is growing in the United States, but clinician attitudes, experience, and beliefs regarding their use have not previously been studied. METHODS One hundred five of 106 clinician attendees (99.1%) of an integrative medicine continuing education conference were surveyed using an audience response system to obtain baseline information. Response frequencies of each item were reported. Nonparametric correlations were assessed comparing the statement "In the last 12 months, I have used essential oils for myself and/or my family" with the other agree/disagree statements using Spearman's rho. RESULTS A majority of participants personally used integrative medicine approaches other than aromatherapy (92.6%) and recommended them clinically (96.8%). Most had personally used essential oils (61%) and wished to offer essential oil recommendations or therapies to their patients (74.0%). Only 21.9% felt confident in their ability to counsel patients on safe use. Personal use of essential oils was highly correlated with confidence in the ability to counsel patients on safe use (Spearman coefficient 0.376, P = 0.000). CONCLUSIONS This study indicates that clinicians interested in integrative medicine desire to provide aromatherapy recommendations, but do not feel confident in their ability to do so.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Teaching Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in medical schools is becoming prevalent worldwide. Few studies have been conducted to evaluate medical students' knowledge and attitude toward CAM. Therefore, this study was designed to assess CAM knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs among Palestinian medical students. METHODS This study was developed in a cross-sectional design. It targeted medical students at An-Najah National University, between January and April of 2018. We gathered the data from students using a questionnaire printed as a hard copy. Medical students of both sexes in their 4th, 5th, or 6th year of studies were included in the survey. The questionnaire consisted of 3 sections: demographic characteristics and detailed practices of the participants, their attitude and held beliefs towards CAM, and their knowledge on CAM. Mann-Whitney U Test and Kruskal-Wallis Test were used to test if there were differences between knowledge about CAM and the characteristics of the participants. RESULTS Of the 300 medical students who were offered the questionnaire, 251 students (43.8% male and 56.2% female) were included in the final analysis. Out of a maximum of 8 points, the mean knowledge score of the participants was 2.0 ± 1.6. The Kruskal-Wallis test showed a statistically significant difference in overall knowledge score among students of different year groups, with students at lower levels obtaining higher scores (P < 0.001). Additionally, the highest knowledge scores were found in students with low income, and students who came from the Palestinian refugee camps (P < 0.001). Students frequently recommended CAM modalities, with herbal medicine being the most recognized and used CAM modality and Ayurvedic medicine being the least recognized and recommended one. Social media was the most popular source of information about CAM, cited by 72.9% of the participants. Participants generally had a good attitude towards CAM but held varying beliefs about it. CONCLUSIONS In the current study, a knowledge gap regarding CAM was found among medical students in our sample, despite their good attitude towards the subject. Also, there was a general acceptance to include materials on CAM within the curriculum of medical students.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The usage of Complementary Health Approaches (CHA) and its popularity have been increasing among both children and pediatric nurses. The aims of this study were to (1) determine the knowledge and usage levels of pediatric nurses about CHA, (2) describe the experiences of nurses about CHA, and (3) evaluate the attitudes of nurses toward CHA. METHODS This was multicenter study. A total of 1,450 pediatric nurses who are working at the pediatric departments of different hospitals in Turkey participated in the study between June 2013 and February 2014. Around 1,303 female and 147 male pediatric nurses, in total 1,450, were included in the study. The semi-structured questionnaire had three sections. The first section composed of 14 questions about sociodemographic characteristics. The second section contained seven questions about the nurses' professional practices with respect to CHA. The third section contained eight questions about the nurses' attitudes to CHA. RESULTS The study revealed that 90.6% of the nurses used CHA, and primarily made use of praying (82.3%), massage (76.6%), and vitamins (60.2%), respectively. Most of the nurses used CHA for relaxation. Approximately half of the nurses did not asked the families of their CHA usage. More than half of the nurses (58.8%) stated that nurses were not responsible for informing patients about CHA. It was found that the nurses had negative experiences with CHA such as allergies, pain, and being upset. The most frequently indicated positive experience was "feeling better both physically and psychologically." CONCLUSIONS It is extremely important that nurses have knowledge about CHA. Nurses should question parents' use of CHA and inform parents about CHA' benefits and potential risks. Considering the personal/professional experiences, it is necessary to evaluate the positive/negative effects of CHA. Research may contribute to increased awareness of the potentially important role of nurses in the delivery of CHA.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Integrative medicine refers to ongoing efforts to combine the best of conventional and evidence-based complementary therapies. While this effort for collaboration is increasing, traditional complementary and alternative medicine (TM-CAM) remains poorly integrated into the current healthcare system of Ghana. At present, it is not clear if practitioners of mainstream medicine favor integrative medicine. The present study, therefore, sought to explore the perceptions of conventional healthcare professionals on integrative medicine. METHODS A qualitative design composed of semi-structured interviews was conducted with 23 conventional healthcare professionals comprising pharmacists, physicians, nurses and dieticians from two quasi-government hospitals in Accra, Ghana. RESULTS Participants' knowledge of TM-CAM was low, and although they perceived alternative medicine as important to current conventional healthcare in Ghana, they expressed anxieties about the potential negative effects of the use of TM-CAM. This paradox was found to account for the low levels of use among these professionals, as well as the low level of recommendation to their patients. The practitioners surveyed recommended that alternative medicine could be integrated into mainstream allopathic healthcare in Ghana through improving knowledge, training as well as addressing concerns of safety and efficacy. These findings are discussed under the themes: the knowledge gap, the paradox of TM-CAM, experience of use and prescription, and guided integration. We did not observe any differences in views among the participants. CONCLUSION The conventional healthcare professionals were ready to accept the idea of integrative medicine based on knowledge of widespread use and the potential role of TM-CAM products and practices in improving healthcare delivery in the country. However, to achieve an institutional integration, practitioners' understanding of TM-CAM must be improved, with specific attention to issues of safety, regulation and evidence-based practice of TM-CAM products and services in Ghana.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to explore student nurses' openness to using or recommending holistic therapies, the strategies they use to manage stress from school or work, and their perceptions of the impact of holistic therapies on personal health. STUDY DESIGN Qualitative component of a quasi-experimental, mixed-methods study. METHODS A convenience sample of undergraduate nursing students in a southeastern U.S. university completed baseline surveys, including demographics and three open-ended questions regarding attitudes toward holistic therapies and strategies used for stress management. Qualitative thematic analysis was undertaken to identify recurring themes in textual data. FINDINGS Students are open to using or recommending holistic therapies but identify lack of knowledge and lack of time as barriers to their practice. Among strategies used by student nurses to manage stress from school or work were physical activity, prayer and meditation, time management, distraction, socialization, artistic pursuits, animal interactions, and other activities. Themes describing holistic therapies' impact on personal health were wholeness, self-empowerment, relaxation/restoration, and alternative/complement to traditional medicine. CONCLUSIONS Findings indicate receptiveness by student nurses to the use of holistic therapies but point to the need for the inclusion of informational as well as experiential education on holistic therapies within nursing curricula.

Abstract
Sixty provisional clinical psychologists in Indonesia were emailed to seek their participation in an online-questionnaire that reflected: CAM knowledge, attitudes CAM, and CAM behaviours. Of the 60 participants approached, 44 with majority of female (95%) completed the questionnaire. The mean age of participants was 25 years. Overall, participants reported low knowledge of CAM and attitudes towards CAM were positive. While 73% reported having recommended CAM to their clients, only 39% had ever made referral. Most of the participants (98%) had used CAM personally but just over half (59%) had ever used it in clinical practice. It was found that knowledge and attitudes towards CAM did not predict CAM recommendation, personal use, nor professional use among the participants. However, CAM knowledge was found to predict CAM referrals. It is assumed that positive attitudes towards CAM integration among participants has been conflicted with their concern for CAM safety.

Abstract
Objective: The objective of this study is to assess the awareness and practices of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for oral health-care management among dental students. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 200 dental students of final year and internship selected by simple random sampling using a close-ended questionnaire. Results: Among the total respondents, 52% were females and 48% were males. Nearly, 14% of the students were not aware of the different categories of the CAM and 12% of them were not aware of its implication in oral health-care management. Conclusion: Majority of the students was aware of CAM, yet they do not follow the use of the same for their patient's oral health-care management. Hence, a small provision regarding the knowledge of CAM should be imposed under the undergraduate curriculum for the dental students so that it should be implemented in their practice in future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND BACKGROUND Disagreement exists regarding the need for knowledge about complementary and integrative health (CIH) strategies, as well as for the need to consider such strategies in clinical nursing practice. OBJECTIVE This study was conducted to assess the knowledge, attitude and use of CIH strategies among nurses in Iran. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTIONS A cross-sectional study of nurses working in two hospitals of Zabol University of Medical Sciences, in southeast Iran, was conducted from October 2014 to April 2015. The questionnaire, developed specifically for this research, was used to assess the knowledge, attitude and use of CIH by nurses. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to interpret the survey responses. RESULTS Most nurses (n=95, 60.5%) have average knowledge about CIH strategies with most holding a positive attitude about use (n=81, 51.6%). The majority (n=90, 57.3%) of nurses, however, never applied CIH methods. Where CIH was used, massage was most often clinically applied (n=129, 82.2%) and a large percentage believed it useful for treating illness (n=136, 87.9%). Other CIH methods commonly used included prayer and herbal medicine. CONCLUSION Nurses have positive attitudes about CIH though knowledge was typically weak. Educational programs should carefully consider how knowledge about CIH methods could be strengthened within curricula.

Abstract
Nurses' attitudes and experiences may affect the level of patient exposure to complementary health approaches (CHA), both now and in the future. The purpose of this study was to describe nurses' experience of CHA and their personal and professional attitudes to the use of CHA. The sample consisted of 220 nurses working at a university hospital in Antalya, Turkey. Data were collected using a questionnaire developed by the researchers. Nurses had a positive attitude toward CHA and reported mixed experiences of CHA for allergies, pain, and stress. This study may contribute to increased awareness of the potentially important role of nurses in delivery of CHAs. Hospital nurses should receive more training on CHA. Nurses should discuss the potential benefits and risks of CHA with patients.

Abstract
Background CAM inclusion into the curricula of health training institutions, a strategy for its integration into the main stream healthcare delivery system is growing globally. Future healthcare professionals knowledge and perception of CAM are key determinants to its successful integration. Thus, the main objective of this study was to compare the use, attitude and interest to study CAM among final year undergraduate medical, pharmacy and nursing students at the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences University of Sierra Leone (COMAHS-USL). Methods A questionnaire based cross-sectional survey was carried out among final year medical, pharmacy and nursing students enrolled at the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences University of Sierra Leone (COMAHS-USL). Chi square, fisher exact two tailed test and Kruskal-wallis test were used to analyze data collected. Results Close to two-thirds (61 %) of all the three groups of final year students used one form of CAM or the other with pharmacy (72.7 %) and nursing (55.6 %) students being the highest and least users respectively. No significant difference was observed among the three groups. In general, final year students in all three cadres demonstrated a positive attitude toward CAM (33.80 ± 3. 2) with medical students showing more positive attitude than pharmacy (p = 0.022) and nursing student (p = 0.008). No significant difference in attitude was observed between students in pharmacy and nursing programs (p = 0.354). More than three quarter (76.6 %) of the students in all the three groups indicated their interest in studying CAM, with preference for the subject to be taught as an elective module (81.6 %). Conclusion An appreciable number of final year medical, pharmacy and nursing students at COMAHS-USL have used at least one CAM modality and demonstrated an overall positive attitude towards CAM. Interest to study CAM was also observed among most of them even though they preferred it to be taught as an elective module. Abstract
Objectives. This study assessed the knowledge and attitudes regarding complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in medical students in Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, it evaluated their views on the incorporation of CAM in their medical syllabus. Methods. The study was conducted by selecting a cross-sectional sample of senior medical students in the Faculty of Medicine. A validated and reliable self-administered questionnaire was used to explore the knowledge, attitude, and benefits of CAM. It was distributed to a sample of 273 students. Results. The study included 242 students, making the response rate 88.6%. Only two-thirds of students (62.4%) were aware of acupuncture principles and only 17.4% recognized that chiropractic is associated with pain management. The knowledge of common herbs such as St. John's Wort, Echinacea, and Ginkgo biloba was limited among the students. Older students had a positive CAM attitude compared to younger students (p = 0.027). Conclusion. Students attitudes toward CAM learning were encouraging regardless of their limited knowledge on the subject. A high percentage of students agreed that CAM in combination with conventional therapy is beneficial in treating unusual cases, but the choice of CAM should be based on evidence. Furthermore, medical students are still reluctant to have CAM practitioners in their referral network.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Therapeutic touch (TT) is independent nursing intervention which is effective on nausea induced by chemotherapy but technique, steps and variables affected by this therapy are not yet well known. The aim of this study was to elicit descriptions of how TT is used with cancer patients, providing a basis for the systematic use and evaluation of TT with patients. MATERIALS AND METHOD In this research, 108 patients were examined with intentional sampling and random allocation in 3 groups (control, placebo and intervention) in 2013 (each group 36). Intervention received therapeutic touch (touching of first energy layer) and demographic form, visual analog scale (VAS) for intensity of nausea, check list for duration and times of nausea in the morning, noon, afternoon and night at acute phase were used. Data were analyzed by Kruskal Wallis, χ(2) and analysis of variance (ANOVA). RESULTS Duration, frequency and intensity of nausea were significantly lower in the test group (P < 0.001, P < 0.001 and P < 0.001). The mean duration of intervention (whole process) was 21.38 min [SD 6.04]. In 69.4% of women there was a need for re-intervention after reassessment phase. CONCLUSION Results of this randomized control trial showed that TT is effective on duration, times and intensity of nausea; therefore, TT can be used as an alternative method for patients who are willing to use this technique.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Given the dearth of literature on this topic, the aim of this study was to understand who chooses to study integrative healthcare at an academic institution and why they choose to do so, the demographic characteristics of the student population, their background, and postgraduate plans. DESIGN A cross-sectional survey design. SETTING Data were collected at a large, urban, public university with a well-established undergraduate bachelor of science program in integrative healthcare. PARTICIPANTS A total of 105 declared integrative health undergraduate majors. MEASUREMENTS Online research software collected anonymous survey responses during a 2-month period. RESULTS Survey participants were more likely to be white and full-time students compared with the general undergraduate population. Many respondents discovered the integrative health major and then decided to enroll at the university. Most had used complementary and alternative medicine modalities, such as massage, yoga, and meditation. More than half of the survey participants were dissatisfied with conventional/Western medicine and its providers. Most respondents had a personal interest in complementary and alternative medicine and holistic health that influenced their decision to declare the major. Additionally, more than half of the respondents want to become a complementary and alternative medicine provider. Most survey participants plan to pursue postgraduate training/education in an integrative healthcare-related field. CONCLUSION Students who choose to study integrative healthcare in an undergraduate academic institution may mirror the patient population of complementary and alternative medicine practitioners. Their profile, rationale, exposures, intentions, and directions may be helpful to universities considering adding this type of program or postgraduate education programs in attracting new students to integrative health fields. It also informs existing integrative healthcare programs regarding program enhancement. A larger sample involving more integrative health academic institutions would be useful for a future study.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the efficacy of applying automatic tongue diagnosis system (ATDS) to the training of novice Chinese medicine (CM) doctors in the tongue diagnosis. METHOD A two-round experiment composed of pre- and after-training tests was performed. Two groups of CM doctors were formed by experienced doctors (ED) and novice doctors (ND). The intra- and inter-observer agreements for the ED and ND groups, and the inter-observer agreements between ATDS and ED, and ATDS and ND were derived first. After a 1-month training of the ND, the intra- and inter-observer agreements of the ND group, and the inter-observer agreement between ATDS and ND were obtained. RESULT The kappa value of agreement data for ND after training was significantly higher than ND before training with a level of P<0.05, indicating an obvious improvement of intra-observer agreement for ND after training with ATDS. The inter-observer agreements for the ED group, and ND group after training were significantly higher (P<0.05) than the ND group before training. In contrast, no significance is observed between the ED group and the ND group after training, indicating that physicians in the ND group achieve an inter-observer agreement to the same level as that of ED after 1-month training. CONCLUSION This finding validates the utilization of ATDS as a mean of education in forging consensus during the learning process of tongue diagnosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The widespread use of CAM around the world requires health professionals including pharmacists to have the required knowledge to better advise their patients. This has lead to an increased need for the inclusion of CAM instruction into the mainstream undergraduate Pharmacy education. This study was designed to describe pharmacy students awareness, use, attitude and perceived need for CAM education at COMAHS-USL and at the same time, determine how these descriptive outcomes are influenced by the socio-demographic variables considered in this study. METHODS A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among undergraduate pharmacy students (n = 90) at the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, University of Sierra Leone using a structured questionnaire. Chi square, fisher exact test, and general linear model univariate analysis were used to compare data between independent cohorts. RESULTS All 90 (100%) of the students were aware and have used (except Ayurveda) at least one of the listed CAM modalities. Herbal/Botanical/Supplements followed by Spirituality/Prayer were the most commonly known and used CAM modalities. Almost two thirds of students considered the CAM modalities they have used to be effective and not harmful. Overall, pharmacy students had a positive attitude towards CAM (Mean attitudinal score = 34.9 ± 4. 5 (range 19-43)) with fourth and fifth year students showing a significantly less positive attitude as compared to the first, second and third year (B = -3.203 p = 0.001, 95% confidence interval -5.093 to -1.314). The media [53 (58.9%)] was the most frequent source of information about CAM. Nearly all students [89 (98.9%)] agreed that CAM knowledge is important to them as future pharmacist and that CAM should be included into the Pharmacy curriculum at COMAHS-USL [81 (90.0%)]. CONCLUSION Pharmacy students in Sierra Leone are aware of and have used at least one of the CAM modalities and do show a positive attitude towards CAM. This was demonstrated by their overwhelming endorsement for CAM course to be part of the undergraduate pharmacy training at COMAHS-USL. This study among others will inform and guide the development and implementation of CAM instruction at COMAHS-USL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While massage has been removed from nursing curricula, studies have reported massage as safe and effective for stress reduction, relaxation, pain relief, fatigue, and quality of life. OBJECTIVE To compare the efficacy of two intensities of touch administered during two seated massages on the attitudes of nursing students toward touch for their self-care and patient care. PARTICIPANTS Nursing students who volunteered gave institutional review board-approved written informed consent to undergo massage by a licensed massage therapist. SETTINGS/LOCATION A private room adjacent to the nursing lab in a school of nursing. INTERVENTION Brief seated massages of differing intensities. Each participant received low-intensity and high-intensity touch in a two-block, randomized order, within-subjects design. Linear mixed models nested within subject and random intercept analyses were used to test hypotheses in this two-treatment, two-sequence, two-period crossover design. OUTCOME MEASURES Health questionnaires/visual analogue scales pertaining to physical/affective/and attitudinal status were completed before and after each massage. RESULTS Twenty-nine participants (93% female, 83% single) completed the study. Before massage, the optimal intensity of touch anticipated for self-comfort was 6.6 (0=no pressure;10=most intense pressure imaginable). The mean touch intensities were 6.7 for high-intensity massage and 0.5 for low-intensity (p<0.001). The overall percentage differences (feeling better or worse) following massage were as follows: low intensity, 37.5% better; high intensity, 62.7% better (p<0.001). Significantly more improvement was reported for energy, pain, stress, and feeling physically uptight after high-intensity compared with low-intensity (p<0.03). Participants were more likely to both receive touch for self-care and provide touch for patient care after experiencing high- versus low-intensity massage (p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS High-intensity seated massage was more efficacious than low-intensity massage and positively influenced nursing student attitudes toward the inclusion of massage in self-care/patient care. The role of touch for self-care/patient care in the nursing curricula merits reconsideration.

Abstract
The authors investigated the prevalence of complementary and alternative medicine usage among medical students and assessed their knowledge and attitude. A survey was conducted, and the following results were obtained: the response rate was 91% (408/450), 61% were female and 67% were 22 years old or younger, 66% had used complementary and alternative medicine, and 17% were using complementary and alternative medicine currently. Most commonly mentioned complementary and alternative medicine include echinacea, cod liver oil, and aloevera. More than half were not sure about complementary and alternative medicine’s efficacy and safety, but 88% would recommend it to others. Only 16% had informed their general practitioner about complementary and alternative medicine use. With respect to formal teaching on complementary and alternative medicine, 56% of the students had not received any and 28% expressed an interest in receiving some. complementary and alternative medicine use among medical students is common despite most being unaware of potential side effects and drug–herb interactions. Such information is vital in enabling them to counsel future patients. Education on complementary and alternative medicine should be standardized and compulsory in all UK medical schools.

Abstract
Objective This study aims to examine knowledge and attitudes towards Complementary and Alternative Medicine among medical students in Turkey, and find out whether they want to be trained in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out between October and December 2010 among medical students. Data were collected from a total of seven medical schools. Findings The study included 943 medical students. The most well known methods among the students were herbal treatment (81.2 %), acupuncture (80.8 %), hypnosis (78.8 %), body-based practices including massage (77 %) and meditation (65.2 %), respectively. Acupuncture, aromatherapy, herbal treatment and meditation were better known among female participants compared to males (p < 0.05). Females and first year students, generally had more positive attitudes. A larger proportion of female students compared to male students reported that a doctor should be knowledgeable about CAM (p = 0.001), and this knowledge would be helpful in their future professional lives (p = 0.015). Positive attitudes towards and willingness to receive training declined as the number of years spent in the faculty of medicine increased. Conclusions Majority of the medical students were familiar with the CAM methods widely used in Turkey, while most of them had positive attitudes towards CAM as well as willingness to receive training on the subject, and they were likely to recommend CAM methods to their patients in their future professional lives. With its gradual scientific development and increasing popularity, there appears a need for a coordinated policy in integrating CAM into the medical curriculum, by taking expectations of and feedback from medical students into consideration in setting educational standards.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Medical students have consistently expressed interest in learning about alternative healing modalities, especially herbal and natural products. To fill this void in medical education at our institution, a novel elective was developed and implemented for fourth year medical students. This herbal/natural product course uses guest lecturers, classroom presentations, and active learning mechanisms that include experiential rotations, case-based learning, and team-based learning to increase student knowledge of herbal/natural product safety and efficacy. METHODS Knowledge outcomes were evaluated via administration of a pre- and post-course test (paired student t-test). End-of-course evaluations (Likert-type questions and narrative responses) were used to assess student opinion of knowledge and skills imparted by the elective and overall course content (mean, standard deviation). RESULTS Over three academic years, 23 students have enrolled in this elective. More than 60% of participants have been female and nearly half of the students (43%) have pursued residencies in primary care. Completion of the course significantly increased student knowledge of common herbal/natural product mechanisms, uses, adverse effects, and drug-interactions as determined by a pre- and post-course knowledge assessment (45%±10% versus 78%±6%; p<0.0001). The course was highly rated by enrollees (overall course quality, 4.6 of 5.0±0.48) who appreciated the variety of activities to which they were exposed and the open classroom discussions that resulted. While students tended to view some alternative medical systems with skepticism, they still believed it was valuable to learn what these modalities encompass. CONCLUSIONS Development and implementation of a herbal/natural product elective that engages undergraduate medical students through active learning mechanisms and critical analysis of the literature has proven effective in increasing knowledge outcomes and is deemed to be a valuable curricular addition by student participants. In the future, it will be of interest to explore mechanisms for expanding the course to reach a larger number of students within the time, financial, and logistical constraints that currently exist.

Abstract
AIM To gain an insight into this issue, this study used a qualitative approach and aims to explore and describe nurses' beliefs, experiences and practice regarding complementary and alternative medicine in Taiwan. BACKGROUND The integration of complementary and alternative medicine with conventional medicine has become more common worldwide in recent years. An increase in patient use and an expansion of nurses using complementary and alternative medicine has spawned further investigation. Most published studies have concentrated on the usage of complementary and alternative medicine in western societies and have focused principally on physicians' attitudes and practice patterns in this regard. Despite the large amount of time and the unique relationship that nurses share with their patients, little research has investigated the nurse's attitudes and practice regarding complementary and alternative medicine. Moreover, there has been no previous research into understanding this issue from the Taiwanese nursing perspective. DESIGN A qualitative research design. METHOD By using an exploratory, descriptive, qualitative approach, data were collected from 11 registered nurses. The methods of the data collection were in-depth, semi-structured interviews, field notes and memos and the data were analysed using the constant comparative method. RESULTS Three major categories emerged from the data; namely, a 'lack of clear definition', 'limited experience' and 'high interest' towards complementary and alternative medicine. These results suggest that the definition of complementary and alternative medicine is often unclear for nurses in Taiwan. Due to the organisational policies and personal knowledge base, very few nurses integrate complementary and alternative medicine into their daily practice. However, the nurses in Taiwan show a great desire to participate in complementary and alternative medicine continuing education programmes. CONCLUSIONS This study is not only significant in filling the gap in the existing literature, but is also important in understanding this issue from the nurses' perspective, to offer a series of recommendations for policy, nursing education, nursing practice and suggestions for further research. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE This study highlights the importance of nursing attitude in the use of complementary and alternative medicine. Clinical nurses have the potential to provide appropriate information to their patients to ensure safe complementary and alternative medicine use.
