Abstract
Agricultural residues can be used as alternative feed sources in industrial chicken production. The impacts of different levels of pomegranate peel and waste cooking oil as an agricultural residue on broilers' nutrition were investigated. Results showed that the replacement of 8% pomegranate peel in diets decreased the growth performance of broilers. Supplementing 8% pomegranate peel in diets reduced apparent nutrient digestibility. The highest level of waste oil inclusion in broiler diets indicated negative impacts on apparent zmetabolizable energy and crude fat apparent nutrients digestibility. Broilers fed the diet containing 4% pomegranate peel had a higher Lactobacillus population. The results showed that the Lactobacillus population was lower in broilers fed 8% pomegranate peel powder and 4% waste oil in diets. The inclusion of 8% pomegranate peel powder in diets showed lower villus height and crypt depth in the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. The inclusion of 4% pomegranate peel decreased the peroxide value (PV) of meat. Dietary inclusion of 4% waste oil raised the PV of meat. Alpha-tocopherol supplementation decreased the PV of meat. Finally, the results provide information that 4% of pomegranate peel and 4% waste oil could be used as an alternative feed ingredient in broiler diets without adverse effects.

Abstract
Lipids (fats and oils) are a concentrated source of energy in poultry diets that improves palatability, feed consistency, provides essential fatty acids and increases the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Fresh oil is an expensive energy source and its exposure to air, heat, metallic catalyst during storage and processing may lead to its oxidative deterioration. This review highlights the response of modern poultry to dietary oxidized oil on growth performance, nutrients digestibility, gut health, carcass characteristics, meat quality, blood chemistry and tissue oxidative status. Literature shows that in moderately (peroxide value (PV): 20 to 50 meq kg−1) and highly (PV: 50 to 100 meq kg−1 or above) oxidized oils, lipid peroxidation causes rancid odours and flavours that negatively affect feed palatability, reduces intestinal villus height that decreases the surface area available for nutrients absorption. The oxidation products also damage fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) in blood resulting in an oxidative stress. The use of oxidized oil in poultry diets has no significant effect on dressing percentage, pH and meat colour, whereas carcass weight decreases and drip loss of meat increases. Overall, there is a contradictory data regarding the influence of oxidized oil in poultry feed depending on the PV and inclusion levels. The reviewed literature shows that the use of mildly oxidized (PV < 20 meq kg−1) oil in poultry feed with 4 to 5% inclusion level decreases the feed cost and ultimately cost of poultry production without compromising their growth performance. It can, therefore, partially replace fresh oil as an efficient, cost effective and sustainable energy source in poultry diets.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary vitamin E (VE) supplementation on the reproductive performance of female mink, preweaning growth performance of their kits, and antioxidative status and immune functions of dams and kits. Yearling mink dams (n = 180) were randomly assigned to five treatment groups (n = 36). The dietary treatments included a basal diet supplemented with VE at 0 (control), 80, 160, 320, or 640 mg/kg DM. Compared with the control, the addition of 160-320 mg/kg VE decreased (P = 0.0362) the percentage of pre-weaning mortality of mink kits. At weaning, the average body weight was greater (P = 0.0408) in kits fed 320 mg/kg supplemental VE. In mink dams, the addition of 80-320 mg/kg VE increased (P = 0.0125) serum SOD. Supplementation of 320 or 640 mg/kg VE decreased (P = 0.0260) serum reactive oxygen species (ROS). Furthermore, feeding a large dose of VE (640 mg/kg diet) resulted in increased (P = 0.0245) serum α-tocopherol. In mink kits, the addition of 320 or 640 mg/kg VE increased serum α-tocopherol (P = 0.0207) and IgG (P = 0.0464). Supplementation of 640 mg/kg VE decreased (P = 0.0471) serum ROS. The present results indicate that VE supplementation improved the antioxidative status of mink dams and enhanced the immune functions, decreased pre-weaning mortality and enhanced weaning weight of their kits. Taken together, the effective VE supplementation was 320 mg/kg of diet for yearling female mink.

Abstract
Ninety standard dark male minks (8 wk of age) were used to investigate the effects of vitamin E (VE) supplementation on growth performance, antioxidative status, and some immunological blood parameters. The dietary treatments included a basal diet (containing 20.86 mg kg−1VE) supplemented with 0 (control), 50, 100, 200, 400, or 800 mg kg−1VE. The results showed that VE supplementation of 200–400 mg kg−1increased (P < 0.05) the body weight, average daily feed intake, average daily gain, and gain to feed ratio of the mink from days 1 to 30. At days 30 and 60, the minks fed diets supplemented with 400 mg kg−1VE had higher (P < 0.05) concentrations of serum superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase than either the control or the VE50 groups but had activity levels similar to those of the VE200 and VE800 groups. Feeding a high dose of VE (400–800 mg kg−1diet) resulted in a significant increase in the concentrations of α-tocopherol and a reduction in the reactive oxygen species content in the serum. Vitamin E supplementation of 200–400 mg kg−1increased (P < 0.05) the concentrations of immunoglobulin G, interleukin-2, and soluble CD4/soluble CD8and decreased (P < 0.05) the content of soluble CD8in the serum. Overall, the suitable level of VE supplementation was found to be 200–400 mg kg−1diet for growing mink.

Abstract
1. An investigation was carried out into the effects of dietary α-tocopherol (α-T) concentration and source of supplemental oil on performance, activity of anti-oxidative enzymes and some immune responses in broilers from day-old to 41 d of age. 2. Three dietary concentrations of α-T (10, 50 and 100 mg/kg) with three sources of supplemental oil (sunflower - SFO, palm - PMO and safflower - SAO) were provided using a 3 × 3 experimental design. 3. Body weight gain and food conversion efficiency were not affected by either interaction or concentrations of α-T and sources of oil in diet. 4. Concentrations of total protein, globulin, triglycerides and cholesterol in sera increased significantly with dietary α-T concentration irrespective of the source of oil. Significantly higher concentration of serum albumin was evident in broilers fed on the SFO-based diet and the concentration of globulin was higher in groups fed on those diets containing PMO and SAO. 5. The lipid peroxidation (LP), measured as MDA release, decreased with the concentration of α-T in a dose-related manner with SFO- and SAO-based diets, although not with the PMO-based diet. With different oil sources, LP was significantly lower with the PMO-based diet compared to the others. Activities of glutathione peroxidase and RBC catalase increased and heterophil: lymphocyte ratio was reduced with concentration of α-T for each source of oil tested. 6. Assays for humoral and cell-mediated immune responses indicated no effect of the source of dietary supplemental oil or interaction, although an increasing concentration of dietary α-T improved cell-mediated immune responses. 7. It is concluded that sunflower oil, palm oil and safflower oil can be used as sources of oil for broiler diets without having any effect on performance, immune responses or the activity of anti-oxidizing enzymes. Higher concentrations of dietary α-tocopherol (50 or 100 mg/kg) reduced lipid peroxidation activity and enhanced activities of anti-oxidative enzymes, they also improved the cell-mediated immune responses in commercial broilers.

Abstract
Administration of oxidized oils to rats or pigs causes a reduction of their cholesterol concentrations in liver and plasma. The reason for this effect is unknown. We tested the hypothesis that oxidized oils lower cholesterol concentrations by inhibiting the proteolytic activation of sterol regulatory element-binding protein (SREBP)-2 in the liver and transcription of its target genes involved in cholesterol synthesis and uptake through an upregulation of gene expression of insulin-induced genes (Insig). For 6 d, 18 rats were orally administered either sunflower oil (control group) or an oxidized oil prepared by heating sunflower oil. Rats administered the oxidized oil had higher messenger RNA (mRNA) concentrations of acyl-CoA oxidase and cytochrome P450 4A1 in the liver than control rats (P < 0.05), indicative of activation of PPARalpha. Furthermore, rats administered the oxidized oil had higher mRNA concentrations of Insig-1 and Insig-2a, a lower concentration of the mature SREBP-2 in the nucleus, lower mRNA concentrations of the SREBP-2 target genes 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA reductase and LDL receptor in their livers, and a lower concentration of cholesterol in liver, plasma, VLDL, and HDL than control rats (P < 0.05). In conclusion, this study shows that reduced cholesterol concentrations in liver and plasma of rats administered an oxidized oil were due to an inhibition of the activation of SREBP-2 by an upregulation of Insig, which in turn inhibited transcription of proteins involved in hepatic cholesterol synthesis and uptake.

Abstract
Feeding oxidized fats to lactating rats causes a strong reduction of triacylglycerol concentration in the milk. The reason for this, however, has not yet been elucidated. Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to 2 groups of 11 rats each and fed diets containing either fresh fat (FF group) or an oxidized fat (OF group) from d 1 to d 20 of lactation. Concentrations of triacylglycerols and long-chain fatty acids in the milk and weight gain of suckling pups were lower in the OF group than in the FF group (P < 0.05). Concentrations of medium-chain fatty acids in the milk and messenger RNA (mRNA) abundance of lipogenic enzymes in the mammary gland did not differ between the 2 groups of rats. However, the OF group had a lower concentration of triacylglycerols and nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) in plasma and lower mRNA concentrations of lipoprotein lipase and fatty acid transporters in the mammary gland than the FF group (P < 0.05). Moreover, the OF group had higher mRNA concentrations of hepatic lipase, fatty acid transporters, and several genes involved in fatty acid oxidation in the liver than the FF group (P < 0.05). The present findings suggest that a dietary oxidized fat lowers the concentration of triacylglycerols in the milk by a reduced uptake of fatty acids from triacylglycerol rich-lipoproteins and NEFA into the mammary gland. The study, moreover, indicates that an oxidized fat impairs normal metabolic adaptations during lactation, which promote the utilization of metabolic substrates by the mammary gland for the synthesis of milk.

Abstract
The effect of a 2% dietary administration to pigs of oxidized linseed oil (targeted level of 150mEq.O(2)/kg oil after heating at 50°C and exposure to air for 3-4 days following addition of 10ppm CuSO(4)), either or not in combination with antioxidants, on the oxidative stability of raw and cooked pork during illuminated chill storage was assessed. The antioxidant treatments were: 40ppm α-tocopheryl acetate, 40ppm rosemary extract, 40ppm rosemary extract+2ppm gallic acid, and 40ppm α-tocopheryl acetate+40ppm rosemary extract. A total of 20ppm of α-tocopheryl acetate (ATA) was added to all diets in order to meet the physiological requirement of the animals. The antioxidant treatments did not exert any effect on colour and protein oxidation. Lipid oxidation was only decreased by dietary ATA when comparing the ATA supplemented groups combined versus a control treatment group for raw but not for cooked meat. This was due to a higher content of α-tocopherol in the meat and subcutaneous fat. The lipid oxidation results suggested a lack of antioxidant effect for the rosemary extract. No evidence for a synergistic effect of the antioxidant combinations was observed.

Abstract
It has been shown that treatment of rats with clofibrate, a synthetic agonist of PPARalpha, increases mRNA concentration of organic cation transporters (OCTN)-1 and -2 and concentration of carnitine in the liver. Since oxidised fats have been demonstrated in rats to activate hepatic PPARalpha, we tested the hypothesis that they also up regulate OCTN. Eighteen rats were orally administered either sunflower-seed oil (control group) or an oxidised fat prepared by heating sunflower-seed oil, for 6 d. Rats administered the oxidised fat had higher mRNA concentrations of typical PPARalpha target genes such as acyl-CoA oxidase, cytochrome P450 4A1 and carnitine palmitoyltransferases-1A and -2 in liver and small intestine than control rats (P < 0.05). Furthermore, rats treated with oxidised fat had higher hepatic mRNA concentrations of OCTN1 (1.5-fold) and OCTN2 (3.1-fold), a higher carnitine concentration in the liver and lower carnitine concentrations in plasma, gastrocnemius and heart muscle than control rats (P < 0.05). Moreover, rats administered oxidised fat had a higher mRNA concentration of OCTN2 in small intestine (2.4-fold; P < 0.05) than control rats. In conclusion, the present study shows that an oxidised fat causes an up regulation of OCTN in the liver and small intestine. An increased hepatic carnitine concentration in rats treated with the oxidised fat is probably at least in part due to an increased uptake of carnitine into the liver which in turn leads to reduced plasma and muscle carnitine concentrations. The present study supports the hypothesis that nutrients acting as PPARalpha agonists influence whole-body carnitine homeostasis.

Abstract
The present study was performed to investigate whether lipid peroxidation products in thermoxidised dietary oil fed during rearing, pregnancy and lactation influences the reproductive performance of female rats and the antioxidant status of their offspring. Twenty-four female rats were divided into two groups at 4 weeks of age. They were fed diets containing fresh or oxidised oil (the latter prepared by heating at a temperature of 50°C for 16 d) for 14 weeks. At the age of 12 weeks female rats were mated. The number of total pups and pups born alive was not different between both groups. However, individual pups and litters of dams fed oxidised oil were lighter at birth and gained less weight during the suckling period than those of dams fed fresh oil (P>0·05). Pups of dams fed oxidised oil contained less protein and more fat in their carcasses than those of dams fed fresh oil (P>0·05). The milk of dams fed oxidised oil had a lower concentration of triacylglycerols and a lower energy content than that of dams fed the fresh oil (P>0·05). The pups of dams fed oxidised oil had higher concentrations of lipid peroxidation products in the liver at birth and day 19 of lactation than those of dams fed fresh oil (P>0·05). In conclusion, the present study shows that feeding oxidised oil with a high concentration of lipid peroxidation products to female rats during rearing, pregnancy and lactation influences the development and antioxidant status of fetus and suckling pups.

Abstract
This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of dietary oxidized fats on the relative mRNA concentrations and the activities of fatty acid synthase (FAS) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) in the liver of rats treated with vitamin E or selenium. Two experiments with male Sprague-Dawley rats were carried out. The first experiment included eight groups of rats fed diets with either fresh fat or three different types of oxidized fat, prepared by heating at temperatures of 50, 105, or 190 degrees C, over a period of 6 wk. The diets contained either 25 or 250 mg alpha-tocopherol equivalents per kg. The second experiment included four groups of rats fed diets with fresh fat or oxidized fat, heated at a temperature of 55 degrees C, containing either 70 or 570 microg selenium per kg, over a period of 8 wk. Feeding the diets with oxidized fats led to a significant overall reduction of the relative mRNA concentrations and the activities of FAS and G6PDH in both experiments. The effects of the oxidized fats on mRNA concentrations and activities of these enzymes were independent of the dietary concentrations of vitamin E or selenium. Moreover, in both experiments the rats whose diet contained the oxidized fats had significantly lower concentrations of TG in liver, plasma, and VLDL than the rats whose diet contained fresh fat. The study suggests that oxidized fats contain substances that suppress gene expression of lipogenic enzymes in the liver.

Abstract
A recent study demonstrated that feeding a diet with a thermally oxidized fat increases the concentration of thyroxine in plasma of miniature pigs. This study was undertaken to investigate whether the effect of thermally oxidized fats on plasma thyroid hormones is influenced by the supply of vitamin E or selenium. Two experiments were conducted using male Sprague-Dawley rats. The first experiment included eight groups of rats fed diets with either fresh fat or three different types of oxidized fat prepared by heating at 50 degrees C, 105 degrees C or 190 degrees C for 42 d. The diets contained either 25 or 250 mg alpha-tocopherol equivalents per kg. The second experiment included four groups of rats fed diets with fresh fat or oxidized fat heated at 55 degrees C, containing either 70 or 570 microg selenium per kg for 56 d. Rats fed all types of oxidized fats had higher concentrations of free and total thyroxine in plasma than rats fed the equivalent diets with fresh oil; the concentrations of triiodothyronine and thyroid-stimulating hormone did not differ between rats fed fresh and those fed oxidized fats. The effect of the oxidized fat on the plasma thyroxine concentration was completely independent of the supply of vitamin E (expt. 1) and the supply of selenium (expt. 2). Our results confirm that oxidized dietary fats raise the plasma thyroxine concentration and show that this phenomenon is independent of the vitamin E and selenium status.

Abstract
To investigate the effect of a dietary oxidized oil on thyroid hormone status and circulating cholesterol, we conducted a study with 16 male miniature pigs fed a nutritionally adequate diet with 15% of either fresh or thermoxidized oil for 35 d (n = 8/group). The thermoxidized oil was prepared by heating sunflower oil at 110 degrees C for 48 h. The fresh oil consisted of a mixture of sunflower oil and lard (94:6, v/v) which had a fatty acid composition similar to the thermoxidized oil. At the end of the study, there were no differences in body weight gains and plasma clinicochemical variables between groups, suggesting that the thermoxidized oil did not induce general toxic symptoms. However, pigs fed the thermoxidized oil had significantly higher plasma concentrations of total and free thyroxine (P < 0.05) and a tendency for a higher plasma concentration of thyroid hormone-stimulating hormone (P < 0.1) than pigs fed the fresh oil. Additionally, pigs fed the thermoxidized oil had lower concentrations of cholesterol in plasma, LDL and HDL (P < 0.05). There were significant negative correlations between the plasma concentrations of total (r = -0.29) and free thyroxine (r = -0.40) and that of cholesterol (P < 0.05), suggesting that there is a causal relationship between the changes in thyroxine concentration and the reduction of plasma cholesterol. Our results indicate that there is a close relationship between alterations of thyroid hormone status and cholesterol metabolism in pigs fed a thermoxidized oil, and dietary oxidized fats should be considered in thyroid hormone disorders.

Abstract
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of a dietary oxidized oil on lipid metabolism in rats, particularly the desaturation of fatty acids. Two groups of rats were fed initially for a period of 35 d diets containing 10% of either fresh oil or thermally treated oil (150 degrees C, 6 d). The dietary fats used were markedly different for lipid peroxidation products (peroxide value: 94.5 vs. 3.1 meq O2/kg; thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances: 230 vs. 7 micromol/kg) but were equalized for their fatty acid composition by using different mixtures of lard and safflower oil and for tocopherol concentrations by individual supplementation with DL-alpha-tocopherol acetate. In the second period which lasted 16 d, the same diets were supplemented with 10% linseed oil to study the effect of the oxidized oil on the desaturation of alpha-linolenic acid. During the whole period, all the rats were fed identical quantities of diet by a restrictive feeding system in order to avoid a reduced food intake in the rats fed the oxidized oil. Body weight gains and food conversion rates were only slightly lower in the rats fed the oxidized oil compared to the rats fed the fresh oil. Hence, the effects of lipid peroxidation products could be studied without a distortion by a marked reduced food intake and growth. To assess the rate of fatty acid desaturation, the fatty acid composition of liver and heart total lipids and phospholipids was determined and ratios between product and precursor of individual desaturation reactions were calculated. Rats fed the oxidized oil had reduced ratios of 20:4n-6/18:2n-6, 20:5n-3/18:3n-3, 20:4n-6/20:3n-6, and 22:6n-3/22:5n-3 in liver phospholipids and reduced ratios of 20:4n-6/18:2n-6, 22:5n-3/18:3n-3, and 22:6n-3/18:3n-3 in heart phospholipids. Those results suggest a reduced rate of desaturation of linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid by microsomal delta4-, delta5-, and delta6-desaturases. Furthermore, liver total lipids of rats fed the oxidized oil exhibited a reduced ratio between total monounsaturated fatty acids and total saturated fatty acids, suggesting a reduced delta9-desaturation. Besides those effects, the study observed a slightly increased liver weight, markedly reduced tocopherol concentrations in liver and plasma, reduced lipid concentrations in plasma, and an increased ratio between phospholipids and cholesterol in the liver. Thus, the study demonstrates that feeding an oxidized oil causes several alterations of lipid and fatty acid metabolism which might be of great physiologic relevance.

Abstract
Diets rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are well known to suppress hepatic lipogenic enzymes compared to fat-free diets or diets rich in saturated fatty acids. However, the mechanism underlying suppression of lipogenic enzymes is not quite clear. The present study was undertaken to investigate whether lipid peroxidation products are involved in suppression of lipogenic enzymes. Therefore, an experiment with growing male rats assigned to six groups over a period of 40 d was carried out. Rats received semisynthetic diets containing 9.5% coconut oil and 0.5% fresh soybean oil (coconut oil diet, peroxide value 5.1 meq O2/kg oil), 10% fresh soybean oil (fresh soybean oil diet, peroxide value 9.5 meq O2/kg oil), or 10% thermally treated soybean oil (oxidized soybean oil diet, peroxide value 74 meq O2/kg oil). To modify the antioxidant state of the rats, we varied the vitamin E supply (11 and 511 mg alpha-tocopherol equivalents per kg of diet) according to a bi-factorial design. Food intake and body weight gain were not influenced by dietary fat and vitamin E supply. Activities of hepatic lipogenic enzymes were markedly influenced by the dietary fat. Feeding either fresh or oxidized soybean oil diets markedly reduced activities of fatty acid synthase, (FAS), acetyl CoA-carboxylase, (AcCX), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, (G6PDH), 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, and ATP citrate lyase (ACL) relative to feeding the coconut oil diet. Moreover, feeding oxidized soybean oil slightly, but significantly, lowered activities of FAS, AcCX, and ACL compared to feeding fresh soybean oil. Activities of hepatic lipogenic enzymes were reflected by concentrations of triglycerides in liver and plasma. Rats fed the coconut oil diet had markedly higher triglyceride concentrations in liver and plasma than rats consuming fresh or oxidized soybean oil diets, and rats fed oxidized soybean oil had lower concentrations than rats fed fresh soybean oil. The vitamin E supply of the rats markedly influenced concentrations of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances in liver, but it did not influence activities of hepatic lipogenic enzymes. Because the vitamin E supply had no effect, and ingestion of an oxidized oil had only a minor effect, on activities of hepatic lipogenic enzymes, it is strongly suggested that neither exogenous nor endogenous lipid peroxidation products play a significant role in the suppression of hepatic lipogenic enzymes by diets rich in PUFA. Therefore, we assumed that dietary PUFA themselves are involved in regulation of hepatic lipogenic enzymes. Nevertheless, the study shows that ingestion of oxidized oils, regardless of the vitamin E supply, also affects hepatic lipogenesis, and hence influences triglyceride levels in liver and plasma.

Abstract
Over a period of 4 wk, 24 10-d-old broiler hens were fed diets containing 11% vegetable oil (9% rapeseed oil, 2% soybean oil), which was added either fresh (1 meq O2/kg oil) or oxidized (156 meq O2/kg oil). The effects of the dietary treatments on nutrient digestibility were examined in a balance experiment. The antioxidative status of the animals was evaluated using plasma concentrations of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), erythrocyte hemolysis in vitro, selenium-dependent and selenium-independent activity of glutathione peroxidase in liver cell cytosolic fractions, and concentrations of tocopherols and other fat-soluble compounds with antioxidative properties (lutein, beta-carotene, and retinol) in plasma and various tissues (skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, liver, and abdominal fat). Compared to the fresh oil, the concentrations of linoleic and linolenic acid were slightly lower in oxidized oil. The concentration of alpha-tocopherol in the diet with fresh oil was an average of 80.8 mg/kg diet, whereas the diet with oxidized oil only provided 44 mg/kg. The dietary selenium content averaged 0.48 mg/kg in both diets. During the experiment, none of the animals showed symptoms of diarrhea or vitamin E deficiency. The intake of oxidized oil caused a growth depression after 2 wk. The retention of fat (P = 0.07), energy (P = 0.09), and alpha-tocopherol (P < 0.01) was lower in the group fed oxidized fat. Furthermore, these animals showed significantly higher plasma concentrations of TBARS (P < 0.01), and lower concentrations of tocopherols, lutein, beta-carotene, and retinol in plasma and tissues.

Three cannulated, lactating cows were used in a 3 x 3 Latin square design to determine the effect of roasting or NaOH treatment of barley on ruminal fermentation and site and extent of digestion of nutrients. Experimental treatments were rolled barley, roasted (exit temperature, 135 degrees C) and rolled barley, and treated with 4% NaOH and 220 L of H2O/tonne of barley. Diets also consisted of grass silage and soybean meal. Treatment with NaOH reduced concentrations of several AA, starch, and NDF in the barley. Starch digestibility in the rumen was lower for barley that was treated with NaOH but was unaffected for roasted barley. Digestibilities of N and starch in the small intestine were reduced for barley treated with NaOH, but values for rolled and roasted barley were similar. Apparent total tract digestibility of starch was reduced for the NaOH treated barley. Treatment of barley with NaOH tended to have a detrimental effect on feed intake, digestibility, and milk production. Roasting of barley did not appear to affect the site or extent of carbohydrate digestion, but roasting protected N from ruminal degradation. The protective effect on the carbohydrate fraction would be expected to be greater if the grain were cooled prior to rolling so that the protein matrix of the starch granule remained intact.
