Abstract
BACKGROUND The metabolic impacts of including soya meal, wheat gluten and corn gluten in the diet of male lambs could influence their reproductive performance. OBJECTIVES An experiment was carried out to assess the effects of corn gluten, wheat gluten and soya meal on the reproductive system of male lambs. METHODS Twenty-four male Morkaraman lambs, aged 9 months, were utilized in this study and were fed experimental diets for 56 days. The lambs were divided into a control group (soybean meal + safflower meal), a corn group (corn gluten) and a wheat group (wheat gluten). RESULTS The serum follicle-stimulating hormone level of the control group was significantly higher and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) level was lower than the wheat and corn gluten groups (p < 0.05). The lowest malondialdehyde level in testicular tissue was observed in the control group, whereas the highest was in the wheat gluten group (p < 0.05). The glutathione level in the control group was significantly higher than in the other groups (p < 0.05). The corn gluten group showed the highest CHOP and IRE1 levels; the lowest Bcl-2 levels and the highest IL-1B and P2 × 7R levels were found in the wheat group; and the lowest TNF-α levels were in the control group (p < 0.05). Additionally, the study revealed that diet had a significant impact on spermatological parameters of the testis such as diameter, volume and weight (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS These results concluded that the inclusion of different protein sources in the diet of reproductive male lambs affects the metabolism of testicular tissue.

Abstract
This study investigated the ameliorative effects of betaine and ascorbic acid on some endocrine and erythrocytic parameters in female Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) reared during the dry season. A total of 372 fourteen- day-old female quails sourced commercially was kept in cages for 56 days. After seven days acclimation, all birds were weighed and allotted by complete random design to four groups with 3 replicates per group. Every group having 93 quails, comprised of 31 birds per replicate. Experimental groups were birds fed: Control (basal); ascorbic acid (AA), at 200 mg/Kg; betaine (BET) at 2 g/kg and combination of AA (200 mg/Kg) + BET (2 g/kg) of diets. Daily dry-bulb temperature (DBT), relative humidity (RH) and temperature-humidity index (THI) measured at 08:00 h, 13:00 h and 17:00 h fluctuated widely and exceeded the zone of thermal comfort for Japanese quails. Serum levels of catalase (CAT), reduced glutathione (GSH), cortisol, sex hormones (luteinizing hormone, LH and estradiol) and erythrocyte parameters (packed cell volume, PCV; red blood count, RBC; haemoglobin concentration, Hb; mean corpuscular volume (MCV), hemoglobin (MCH) were obtained at 28, 49 and 70 days of age. In female quails, AA ± BET increased (P < 0.05) CAT and GSH, but decreased (P < 0.05) cortisol levels when compared with control values at varying ages. There were higher (P < 0.05) values of LH in quails fed dietary AA + BET (28 and 49 day-old) and estradiol in those which consumed either BET or AA + BET (28, 49 and 70 day-old) and AA (at 70 day-old). At 49 day-old, either BET or AA + BET increased (P < 0.05) RBC count, but lowered (P < 0.05) MCV and MCH. In conclusion, betaine and ascorbic acid supplementation improved activities of serum sex and stress hormones, and erythrocytic parameters of Japanese quails during the dry season.

Abstract
The study investigated the effects of betaine and ascorbic acid supplementation on serum gonadotropin, testicular histological features and sperm quality in male Japanese quails reared during the dry season. Two hundred and forty 14 day-old male Japanese quails, obtained commercially and housed in cages, were assigned randomly to four dietary treatments for 56 days. Each treatment comprised of 3 replicates (20 birds per replicate). Birds in Control group were fed only basal diet, while those in AA group consumed supplemental ascorbic acid at (200 mg/kg); BET group, betaine (2 g/kg) and AA + BET, a combination of AA (200 mg/kg) and betaine (2 g/kg) in diets. Feeds and water were offered to all birds ad libitum. The prevailing environmental conditions during the study predominantly exceeded the zone of thermal comfort for Japanese quails with DBT ranging from 25.0 to 37.0 °C; RH, 48.0-92.0% and THI, 69.8-91.0. At 28, 49 and 70 day-old, serum concentrations of malondialdhyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), gonadotropins [luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormones (FSH)] and testicular histological analyses were evaluated. Sperm quality was assessed in 70 day - old quails as sperm motility (SM), vitality (SV), total abnormalities (STA) and reserve (SR). Supplemental AA + BET decreased (P < 0.05) MDA, but improved (P < 0.05) SOD in 28, 49 and 70 day-old quails. Serum LH and FSH activities were enhanced (P < 0.05) in birds fed AA ± BET diets, but those which consumed BET or AA + BET showed enhanced (P < 0.05) testicular histological architecture and spermatogenic activities. Birds fed AA ± BET showed improved SM, SV and SR (P < 0.05), but lower STA in 70 days old male quails. It is concluded that supplementation of betaine and ascorbic acid enhances male reproductive potentials in Japanese quails during the dry season.

Abstract
Our previous work indicated that feeding oregano essential oil (OEO) in combination with monensin (MON) may not be mutually beneficial to dairy calf growth performance. To evaluate this observation further, a 240-d long-term growth experiment was conducted using 12 young growing Holstein bulls using a 2 × 2 factorial treatment arrangement. Main factors were OEO and MON arranged in 4 individual treatments: (1) ration fed without OEO or MON (control), (2) OEO fed at 26 mg/kg of dry matter (DM), (3) MON fed at 25 mg/kg of DM, and (4) OEO and MON fed in combination (OEO+MON). Holstein bulls were 70 d of age and similar in body weight (BW; 93.3 ± 4.54 kg) and individually fed for 240 d. The targeted feeding rates of OEO and MON were blended into 200 g of concentrate and top dressed each morning to a corn stalklage-based ration. Body weights, frame measurements, and blood samples were collected monthly. Interactions of OEO by MON were detected for BW, BW gain, average daily gain, and a trend for feed conversion. Bulls fed OEO or MON demonstrated greater final BW (368, 385, 381, and 358 kg for control, OEO, MON, and OEO+MON, respectively), and BW gains (278, 292, 285, and 265 kg) and average daily gain (1.16, 1.22, 1.19, 1.11 kg/d) were greatest for bulls fed OEO or MON compared with bulls fed OEO+MON; bulls fed the control were intermediate and similar to bulls fed MON. Intake of DM was greater for bulls fed OEO (6.55, 6.99, 6.60, and 6.42 kg/d) compared with bulls fed remaining treatments. Frame growth gain measurements for heart girth, abdominal girth, withers height, body length, and cannon bone circumference were similar for bulls fed all treatments. Serum triglyceride (0.23, 0.25, 0.28, and 0.24 mmol/L) concentrations were greater for bulls fed MON compared with bulls fed the control and OEO+MON, and bulls fed OEO were intermediate and similar. Cholesterol (2.06, 2.29, 2.20, and 2.07 mmol/L) concentrations were greater for bulls fed OEO compared with bulls fed the control and OEO+MON, and bulls fed MON were intermediate and similar. Serum antioxidant measurements were similar for bulls fed all treatments. Serum IgA, IgG, and IgM concentrations were similar for bulls fed all treatments. Feeding OEO or MON separately can improve growth performance of growing Holstein bulls. We do not know why the combination of OEO and MON is antagonistic to growth performance of Holstein bulls. However, these technologies should not be fed in combination to growing dairy cattle.

Abstract
Using antibiotics in poultry diets as growth promoters was reported to have harmful effects on consumers, so the current study was done to monitor the impact of dietary supplementation of antimicrobial black cumin oil (BCO) on carcass traits, growth performance, biochemical components, and ileal microbial populations of growing Japanese quails. Three hundred growing Japanese quails were used with three different treatments (0, 0.50, and 1.0 g BCO/g diet). Birds fed diet supplemented with 0.5 g BCO/kg diet showed significant increase in body weight comparing with the control and other treatment group. The daily feed intake and feed conversion ratio were significantly increased side by side with increasing BCO level in the diet. The majority of carcass characteristics were maximized by supplementing the quail diet with 0.5 g BCO/kg. Moreover, liver functions, anti-oxidative capacity, lipid profile and anabolic hormones showed significant improvement in BCO-treated diets in a dose-dependent manner. The BCO showed highest antibacterial effect against Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica. The ileal bacterial populations, i.e., total bacterial count (TBC), coliform, Salmonella species, and Escherichia coli were decreased in birds supplemented with BCO 0.5 and 1.0 BCO g/kg compared with the control diet. Based on the aforementioned results, conclusion could be drawn that supplementing quail with BCO in their diet could improve productive performance traits and enhance health aspect of the birds.

Abstract
The objective of the study was to determine the effects of dietary supplementation with N-carbamylglutamate (NCG) or NCG in combination with vitamin C on the gestation and lactation of sows under heat stress during summer. The experiment lasted 51 days from the last month of gestation to weaning (Day 21 of lactation) and involved 100 Yorkshire sows, divided into four groups, fed as follows: (1) Control diet, (2) Control diet plus 0.05% NCG, (3) Control diet plus 0.05% vitamin C, and (4) Control diet plus 0.05% NCG and 0.05% vitamin C. The reproductive performances and partial serum indicators of sows were measured. The results indicated that either NCG or vitamin C administration can ameliorate heat stress and improve the reproductive performance of sows during summer. When administering NCG and vitamin C, litter weights (16.12/13.86 kg, P < 0.05) and average weights of living piglets (1.56/1.34 kg, P < 0.05), rather than numbers born alive (10.47/10.30 head, P > 0.05), were greatly increased at farrowing, and subsequently litter weights (59.69/48.61 kg, P < 0.05) and average weights of living piglets (6.00/5.16 kg, P < 0.05) at weaning were greatly increased in comparison with Controls. The combinational additives can decrease malonaldehyde and cortisol levels, and enhance immunoglobulin G level in the maternal circulation, as well as decrease the respiration rate and increase feed intake of sows. The results demonstrate that NCG in combination with vitamin C can enhance piglet weight rather than number during gestation and lactation and has important implications for anti-heat stress during summer.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the biochemical, immunohistochemical, and histopathological effects of nickel chloride (Ni) in the rainbow trout brain. Fish were exposed to Ni concentrations (1 mg/L and 2 mg/L) for 21 days. At the end of the experimental period, brain tissues were taken from all fish for c-Fos activity and histopathological examination and determination of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) enzyme activities, lipid peroxidation (LPO), and glutathione (GSH) levels. Our results showed that Ni treatment caused a significant increase in the brain SOD activity and in LPO and GSH levels (p < 0.05), but it significantly decreased AChE and CAT enzyme activities (p < 0.05). Strong induction in c-Fos was observed in some cerebral and cerebellar regions of fish exposed to Ni concentrations when compared with the control group. However, c-Fos activity was decreased in necrotic Purkinje cells. Brain tissues were characterized by demyelination and necrotic changes. These results suggested that Ni treatment causes oxidative stress, changes in c-Fos activity, and histopathological damage in the fish brain.

Abstract
The use of supplements has become commonplace in an effort to complement traditional therapy and as part of long-term preventive health plans. This article discusses historical and present uses of antioxidants, vitamins, and herbs. By complementing traditional medicine with holistic and alternative nutrition and supplements, the overall health and wellness of exotic pets can be enhanced and balanced. Further research is needed for understanding the strengths and uses of supplements in exotic species. Going back to the animals' origin and roots bring clinicians closer to nature and its healing powers.

Abstract
The major goals of the poultry industry are to increase the carcass yield and to reduce carcass fatness, mainly the abdominal fat pad. The increase in poultry meat consumption has guided the selection process toward fast-growing broilers with a reduced feed conversion ratio. Intensive selection has led to great improvements in economic traits such as body weight gain, feed efficiency, and breast yield to meet the demands of consumers, but modern commercial chickens exhibit excessive fat accumulation in the abdomen area. However, dietary composition and feeding strategies may offer practical and efficient solutions for reducing body fat deposition in modern poultry strains. Thus, the regulation of lipid metabolism to reduce the abdominal fat content based on dietary composition and feeding strategy, as well as elucidating their effects on the key enzymes associated with lipid metabolism, could facilitate the production of lean meat and help to understand the fat-lowering effects of diet and different feeding strategies.
