Abstract
Oxytocin (OT), a neuropeptide produced in the supraoptic (SON) and paraventricular (PVN) nuclei, is not only essential for lactation and maternal behavior but also for normal immunological activity. However, mechanisms underlying OT regulation of maternal behavior and its association with immunity around parturition, particularly under mental and physical stress, remain unclear. Here, we observed effects of OT on maternal behavior in association with immunological activity in rats after cesarean delivery (CD), a model of reproductive stress. CD significantly reduced maternal interests to the pups throughout postpartum day 1-8. On postpartum day 5, CD decreased plasma OT levels and thymic index but increased vasopressin, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and IL-10 levels. CD had no significant effect on plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone and corticosterone levels. In the hypothalamus, CD decreased corticotropin-releasing hormone contents in the PVN but increased OT contents in the PVN and SON and OT release from hypothalamic implants. CD also increased c-Fos expression, particularly in the cytoplasm of OT neurons. Lastly, CD depolarized resting membrane potential and increased spike width while increasing the variability of the firing rate of OT neurons in brain slices. Thus, CD can increase hypothalamic OT contents and release but reduce pituitary release of OT into the blood, which is associated with depressive-like maternal behavior, increased inflammatory cytokine release and decreased relative weight of the thymus.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the suicide rate among patients oophorectomized for benign conditions and its association with confounding comorbidities.Method: We conducted a population-based, retrospective cohort study of women aged ≥20 years that underwent oophorectomy including unilateral or bilateral in laparotomy or laparoscopy for benign conditions during 2000-2013. A total of 145,588 oophorectomized and 582,352 non-oophorectomized women were included with an average follow-up time of 7 years. The comorbidities assessed were hypertension (HTN), diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic liver disease and cirrhosis, chronic kidney disease and anxiety disorder.Result: The overall suicide rate was significantly higher in the oophorectomized group. The rate among oophorectomized patients of 20-49 years was significantly greater than in non-oophorectomized patients of the same age group. Hypertension, COPD, anxiety disorder and chronic liver disease and cirrhosis were associated with a significantly higher suicide rate in oophorectomized women. A significant increase in suicide incidence was observed in patients with <6 years' follow-up.Conclusion: A significant increase in suicide rate among oophorectomized women aged 20-49 years was found. The decision to perform oophorectomy should be made cautiously, especially in patients with hypertension, COPD, chronic liver disease and cirrhosis or anxiety disorder. Patients should be followed for at least 6 years postoperatively since the suicide rate is significantly higher in this period.

Abstract
Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) and related oestrogen deficiency is a cause of many psychological symptoms, including: depression, psychological tension, anxiety, mood lability, loss of libido, feelings of loss of femininity and attractiveness, and decreased self- and sexual esteem. Distress related to POI diagnosis may be even more confusing when POI is diagnosed in relation to serious health complications such as cancer, due to surgery or chemotherapy. Every case of POI requires coordinated medical advice with special attendance of a gynaecological endocrinologist, psychotherapist, and sometimes even a psychiatrist.

Abstract
Objective. The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the effectiveness of oral Chinese herbal medicine (OCHM) combined with pharmacotherapy for menopausal depression. Methods. The electronic databases were searched from their inception to December 25, 2016, comprising PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang database, and Chinese Biomedical (CBM) database. Randomized controlled trials investigating the effectiveness of OCHM combined with pharmacotherapy for the people with menopausal depression were eligible. Risk of bias was evaluated according to the Cochrane handbook. Meta-analyses were performed to pool the effect size. Heterogeneity and publication bias were also examined. Results. Twenty-two RCTs with 1770 participants were included in the review. None of the studies used placebo as the control and the risk of bias was high in blinding the participants and personnel. Overall, the meta-analysis demonstrated that adjuvant therapy of OCHM was effective in reducing the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD) scores compared to pharmacotherapy (MD = −3.75; 95% CI = −5.22, −2.29; P < 0.00001). The meta-analysis also suggested that OCHM adjuvant therapy for menopausal depression was superior to pharmacotherapy in terms of response rate of reducing HAMD scores (RR = 1.17; 95% CI = 1.10, 1.25; I2 = 55%). Conclusions. OCHM may provide additional effectiveness to pharmacotherapy for the people with menopausal depression. RCTs including the placebo control were required to further determine the additional efficacy of OCHM for menopausal depression.

Abstract
Women are at an increased risk for developing affective disorders during times of hormonal flux, including menopause when the ovaries cease production of estrogen. However, while all women undergo menopause, not all develop an affective disorder. Increased vulnerability can result from genetic predisposition, environmental factors and gene by environment interactions. In order to investigate interactions between genetic background and estrogen depletion, we performed bilateral ovariectomy, a surgical procedure that results in estrogen depletion and is thought to model the post-menopausal state, in a genetically defined panel of 37 inbred mouse strains. Seventeen days post-ovariectomy, we assessed behavior in two standard rodent assays of anxiety- and depressive-like behavior, the open field and forced swim tests. We detected a significant interaction between ovariectomy and genetic background on anxiety-like behavior in the open field. No strain specific effects of ovariectomy were observed in the forced swim assay. However, we did observe significant strain effects for all behaviors in both the open field and forced swim tests. This study is the largest to date to look at the effects of ovariectomy on behavior and provides evidence that ovariectomy interacts with genetic background to alter anxiety-like behavior in an animal model of menopause.
