Relationship among asthma knowledge, behavior management and social adaptation in school-age children with asthma in Taiwan

Health Literacy of Adolescents

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study is to describe influencing factors of adolescent health literacy.

METHODS

This study is a descriptive, correlational, cross-sectional study. Based on an a priori power analysis and utilizing convenience sampling, 105 adolescents completed the Newest Vital Sign (NVS) health literacy instrument via the Qualtrics online platform. Health literacy was correlated with potential influencing factors to determine relationships between variables.

RESULTS

The mean NVS score was 3.78 (SD = 1.96), indicating possible limited health literacy in this population. There was a moderate, positive correlation between adolescent health literacy and race (r = 0.34, p = .00), with non-white adolescents scoring lower than white adolescents. There was a moderate, positive correlation between adolescent health literacy and income (r = 0.24, p < .05). There were no statistically significant correlations between adolescent health literacy and age or grade level. Regression analysis showed that the overall model accounts for a significant amount of the variance in health literacy scores (F (2, 95) =7.99, p = .001; R² = 0.144; R²_adjusted = 0.126). Race was the only variable that significantly contributed to the model (β = 1.26; SE(β) = 0.40; Standardized β = 0.30, p < .01).

CONCLUSIONS

This study adds to the paucity of adolescent health literacy literature. Furthermore, this study indicates that race and income may play significant roles in adolescent health literacy. Future research is needed to further investigate influencing factors of adolescent health literacy.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

This article provides unique information for nurses to consider alongside other individualized assessments as they continue to design health promotion and patient education practices for adolescents.

Playing the game: How young people moderate influences in accommodating asthma in their lives

This article presents moderating influences, one of the sub-core categories from the theory of accommodating interruptions. This theory emerged in the context of young people who have asthma, explaining how they develop behaviours in their everyday lives (Hughes 2014; Hughes et al., 2017). The aim of this research was to develop a theory on the behaviours of young people who have asthma, in relation to the impact of asthma on the lives and the issues affecting them. This research was undertaken using a classic grounded theory approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant diaries and clinic consultations with young people aged 11-16 years who had asthma for over one year. Moderating influence accounts for how social influences and social culture affect what young people who have asthma wish to achieve and how they want to be perceived by others. Young people moderate influences by their features or attributes in order to meet their own needs.

Behavior management in the field of nursing: A concept analysis

AIM

This concept analysis is to clarify what behavior management in the field of nursing means, what attributes signify it, and what its antecedents and consequences are.

BACKGROUND

A variety of definitions of behavior management were identified in literature. This has resulted in a degree of confusion in the way behavior management is described.

METHODS

The Walker and Avant concept analysis approach was applied. Literature searches were conducted using CINAHL, Academic Search Complete, Business Source Complete, Communication and Mass Media Complete, Education Research Complete, PubMed Medline, Google Scholar and many online dictionaries, with timeline from January 2000 to November 2017.

FINDINGS

The analysis demonstrates that the concept of behavior management in nursing field has two core attributes: (a) conscious actions to maintain and promote positive activities, and (b) training and assisting from the person who has knowledge and experience. Antecedents include poor general knowledge, lack of ability to control, and personality. Consequences include an improvement of quality and productivity and quality of life, reduction of mortality rate of diseases, and development of pro-social skills for the youth.

CONCLUSION

The analysis helps nurses to understand the concept and its application into clinical practice as well as to develop appropriate intervention plans for patients.

Accommodating interruptions: A grounded theory of young people with asthma

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to develop an explanatory theory on the lives of young people with asthma, issues affecting them and the impact of asthma on their day-to-day lives.

BACKGROUND

Accommodating Interruptions is a theory that explains young people's concerns about living with asthma. Although national and international asthma management guidelines exist, it is accepted that the symptom control of asthma among the young people population is poor.

DESIGN

This study was undertaken using Classic Grounded Theory.

METHODS

Data were collected through in-depth interviews and clinic consultations with young people aged 11-16 years who had asthma for over 1 year. Data were also collected from participant diaries. Constant comparative analysis, theoretical coding and memo writing were used to develop the substantive theory.

RESULTS

The theory explains how young people resolve their main concern of being restricted by Accommodating Interruptions in their lives. They do this by assimilating behaviours in balance finding, moderating influence, fitting in and assuming control minimising the effects of asthma on their everyday lives.

CONCLUSION

The theory of Accommodating Interruptions explains young people's asthma management behaviours in a new way. It allows us to understand how and why young people behave the way they do because they want to participate and be included in everyday activities, events and relationships. The theory adds to the body of knowledge on how young people with asthma live their day-to-day lives and it challenges some existing viewpoints in the literature regarding their behaviours.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

The findings have implications for developing services to support young people in a more meaningful way as they accommodate the interruptions associated with asthma in their lives.

Psychosocial adaptation: an evolutionary concept analysis exploring a common multidisciplinary language

AIMS

To provide the first known concept analysis of psychosocial adaptation, exploring its evolution from the concept adaptation. We also determine how psychosocial adaptation is conceptualized across nursing, health, sociobehavioural and education disciplines.

BACKGROUND

Psychosocial adaptation is an important conceptual term that is poorly defined in nursing and other health, sociobehavioural and education disciplines. A thorough understanding of the concept's application in nursing and across disciplines can help to clarify its meaning, facilitate a more effective common language between disciplines and inform future psychosocial adaptation research.

DESIGN

Rodger's evolutionary view guided this concept analysis.

DATA SOURCES

Peer-reviewed English and Spanish manuscripts published between 2011-2013 were retrieved from the following databases: CINAHL, Psych INFO, PubMed, Scopus and LILACS.

REVIEW METHODS

Eighty-nine articles related to psychosocial adaptation were included in the analysis. Findings identify key attributes, antecedents and consequences associated with the use of the concept. Findings were compared vis-a-vis reported characteristics of adaptation.

RESULTS

The attributes characterizing psychosocial adaptation are: change, process, continuity, interaction and influence. In psychosocial adaptation, new life conditions serve as antecedents, while consequences are good or bad outcomes. Important features of the evolution of this concept include its broad appropriation across the reviewed disciplines. The attributes of psychosocial adaptation, have some similarities to those of general adaptation. Both concepts include an aspect of change, but unlike adaptation, psychosocial adaptation has branched away from biological descriptors, such as homeostasis and tends to focus on relational characteristics, such as interaction and influences.
