The development of early non-verbal communication: an evaluation of its meaning

Extended cognition and the space of social interaction

The extended mind thesis (EM) asserts that some cognitive processes are (partially) composed of actions consisting of the manipulation and exploitation of environmental structures. Might some processes at the root of social cognition have a similarly extended structure? In this paper, I argue that social cognition is fundamentally an interactive form of space management--the negotiation and management of "we-space"--and that some of the expressive actions involved in the negotiation and management of we-space (gesture, touch, facial and whole-body expressions) drive basic processes of interpersonal understanding and thus do genuine social-cognitive work. Social interaction is a kind of extended social cognition, driven and at least partially constituted by environmental (non-neural) scaffolding. Challenging the Theory of Mind paradigm, I draw upon research from gesture studies, developmental psychology, and work on Moebius Syndrome to support this thesis.

Developmental changes in mother-infant face-to-face communication: birth to 3 months

This study documented the growth of the earliest form of face-to-face communication in 16 mother-infant dyads, videotaped weekly during a naturalistic face-to-face interaction, between 1 and 14 weeks, in 2 conditions: with the infant in the mother's arms and with the infant semi-reclined on a sofa. Results showed a curvilinear development of early face-to-face communication, with a significant increase occurring between Week 4 and Week 9 depending on the dyad. After 2 months, trajectories diverged into 2 groups: I whose duration of face-to-face communication continued to increase and I whose duration peaked and then began to decrease. After the 1st month, the duration of face-to-face communication was significantly longer when the infant was on the sofa rather than in the mother's arms. In the latter condition, during the 3rd month, girls spent a significantly longer time than boys in face-to-face communication. These findings suggest that context (infant being held vs. not being held) interacts with the infant's age and sex in affecting mother-infant communication.

Infant intentionality as object directedness: a method for observation

It is argued that a definition of intentionality in terms of object directedness is more adequate than the traditional definition in terms of goal directedness. Inconsistencies in the use of "intentionality" among infant researchers are pointed out. A method of observation is explored, based on the definition in terms of behavioral object directedness, that takes into account precursors to fully-fledged intentional actions by approaching intentionality as a matter of degree rather than as an all or none issue. The method, when used on longitudinal video recordings of parent-infant interaction, produced results that substantiated Trevarthen's observations of infant intentionality before the age of six months. Furthermore, the results suggest that the parent's attribution of intentions to the infant is based on the perception of the infant's intentionality, whether in social interaction or in interaction with "physical" objects.

Prematurity, posture and the development of looking behaviour during early communication

This study concerns the developing relationship between motor control and looking behaviour in full term (N = 15) and pre-term (N = 29) infants during face-to-face interaction with the mother at 6, 12 and 18 weeks of corrected age. Infants with inborn errors or major medical complications were excluded. In the pre-term infants the development of head and arm postures during interaction differed from the full term pattern, especially in infants born before 32 weeks and/or small-for-gestational age. The full term infants were more advanced than other infants in the ability to grasp an object. These findings were related to group differences in looking behaviour, suggesting that differences in the development of looking behaviour may be (partly) accounted for by differences in the development of motor control.

Mother-infant dialogue in the first days of life: an observational study during breast-feeding

The temporal organization of the behaviour of children at risk can exhibit inconsistencies which may impair their adaptation. Seven mother-newborn pairs, selected for neurological and obstetric optimality of the babies, were observed during 2 breast-feedings (2nd after birth and 6th to 9th after birth). During pauses between sucking bouts the behaviours of the two partners were strongly coupled, even in the earlier feedings, which was not the case during sucking bouts themselves. Pauses which contained tactile behaviour were shorter in later feedings than in earlier ones, in contrast to both pauses without tactile behaviour and to bouts. The possible functional relevance of emerging temporal relations between partners' behaviours during breast-feeding is discussed.
