Thermoregulation and metabolism in the smallest African gerbil, Gerbillus pusillus

Turbinal bones are still one of the last frontiers of the tetrapod skull: hypotheses, challenges and perspectives

Turbinals are bony or cartilaginous structures that are present in the nasal cavity of most tetrapods. They are involved in key functions such as olfaction, heat, and moisture conservation, as well as protection of the respiratory tract. Despite recent studies that challenged long-standing hypotheses about their physiological and genomic correlation, turbinals remain largely unexplored, particularly for non-mammalian species. Herein, we review and synthesise the current knowledge of turbinals using an integrative approach that includes comparative anatomy, physiology, histology and genomics. In addition, we provide synonyms and correspondences of tetrapod turbinals from about 80 publications. This work represents a first step towards drawing hypotheses of homology for the whole clade, and provides a strong basis to develop new research avenues.

Mammalian maxilloturbinal evolution does not reflect thermal biology

The evolution of endothermy in vertebrates is a major research topic in recent decades that has been tackled by a myriad of research disciplines including paleontology, anatomy, physiology, evolutionary and developmental biology. The ability of most mammals to maintain a relatively constant and high body temperature is considered a key adaptation, enabling them to successfully colonize new habitats and harsh environments. It has been proposed that in mammals the anterior nasal cavity, which houses the maxilloturbinal, plays a pivotal role in body temperature maintenance, via a bony system supporting an epithelium involved in heat and moisture conservation. The presence and the relative size of the maxilloturbinal has been proposed to reflect the endothermic conditions and basal metabolic rate in extinct vertebrates. We show that there is no evidence to relate the origin of endothermy and the development of some turbinal bones by using a comprehensive dataset of µCT-derived maxilloturbinals spanning most mammalian orders. Indeed, we demonstrate that neither corrected basal metabolic rate nor body temperature significantly correlate with the relative surface area of the maxilloturbinal. Instead, we identify important variations in the relative surface area, morpho-anatomy, and complexity of the maxilloturbinal across the mammalian phylogeny and species ecology.

Comparative analyses of basal rate of metabolism in mammals: data selection does matter

Basal rate of metabolism (BMR) is a physiological parameter that should be measured under strictly defined experimental conditions. In comparative analyses among mammals BMR is widely used as an index of the intensity of the metabolic machinery or as a proxy for energy expenditure. Many databases with BMR values for mammals are available, but the criteria used to select metabolic data as BMR estimates have often varied and the potential effect of this variability has rarely been questioned. We provide a new, expanded BMR database reflecting compliance with standard criteria (resting, postabsorptive state; thermal neutrality; adult, non-reproductive status for females) and examine potential effects of differential selectivity on the results of comparative analyses. The database includes 1739 different entries for 817 species of mammals, compiled from the original sources. It provides information permitting assessment of the validity of each estimate and presents the value closest to a proper BMR for each entry. Using different selection criteria, several alternative data sets were extracted and used in comparative analyses of (i) the scaling of BMR to body mass and (ii) the relationship between brain mass and BMR. It was expected that results would be especially dependent on selection criteria with small sample sizes and with relatively weak relationships. Phylogenetically informed regression (phylogenetic generalized least squares, PGLS) was applied to the alternative data sets for several different clades (Mammalia, Eutheria, Metatheria, or individual orders). For Mammalia, a 'subsampling procedure' was also applied, in which random subsamples of different sample sizes were taken from each original data set and successively analysed. In each case, two data sets with identical sample size and species, but comprising BMR data with different degrees of reliability, were compared. Selection criteria had minor effects on scaling equations computed for large clades (Mammalia, Eutheria, Metatheria), although less-reliable estimates of BMR were generally about 12-20% larger than more-reliable ones. Larger effects were found with more-limited clades, such as sciuromorph rodents. For the relationship between BMR and brain mass the results of comparative analyses were found to depend strongly on the data set used, especially with more-limited, order-level clades. In fact, with small sample sizes (e.g. <100) results often appeared erratic. Subsampling revealed that sample size has a non-linear effect on the probability of a zero slope for a given relationship. Depending on the species included, results could differ dramatically, especially with small sample sizes. Overall, our findings indicate a need for due diligence when selecting BMR estimates and caution regarding results (even if seemingly significant) with small sample sizes.

More functions of torpor and their roles in a changing world

Increased winter survival by reducing energy expenditure in adult animals is often viewed as the primary function of torpor. However, torpor has many other functions that ultimately increase the survival of heterothermic mammals and birds. In this review, we summarize new findings revealing that animals use torpor to cope with the conditions during and after natural disasters, including fires, storms, and heat waves. Furthermore, we suggest that torpor, which also prolongs longevity and was likely crucial for survival of mammals during the time of the dinosaur extinctions, will be advantageous in a changing world. Climate change is assumed to lead to an increase in the occurrence and intensity of climatic disasters, such as those listed above and also abnormal floods, droughts, and extreme temperatures. The opportunistic use of torpor, found in many heterothermic species, will likely enhance survival of these challenges, because these species can reduce energy and foraging requirements. However, many strictly seasonal hibernators will likely face the negative consequences of the predicted increase in temperature, such as range contraction. Overall, available data suggest that opportunistic heterotherms with their flexible energy requirements have an adaptive advantage over homeotherms in response to unpredictable conditions.

Metabolic scaling in animals: methods, empirical results, and theoretical explanations

Life on earth spans a size range of around 21 orders of magnitude across species and can span a range of more than 6 orders of magnitude within species of animal. The effect of size on physiology is, therefore, enormous and is typically expressed by how physiological phenomena scale with mass(b). When b ≠ 1 a trait does not vary in direct proportion to mass and is said to scale allometrically. The study of allometric scaling goes back to at least the time of Galileo Galilei, and published scaling relationships are now available for hundreds of traits. Here, the methods of scaling analysis are reviewed, using examples for a range of traits with an emphasis on those related to metabolism in animals. Where necessary, new relationships have been generated from published data using modern phylogenetically informed techniques. During recent decades one of the most controversial scaling relationships has been that between metabolic rate and body mass and a number of explanations have been proposed for the scaling of this trait. Examples of these mechanistic explanations for metabolic scaling are reviewed, and suggestions made for comparing between them. Finally, the conceptual links between metabolic scaling and ecological patterns are examined, emphasizing the distinction between (1) the hypothesis that size- and temperature-dependent variation among species and individuals in metabolic rate influences ecological processes at levels of organization from individuals to the biosphere and (2) mechanistic explanations for metabolic rate that may explain the size- and temperature-dependence of this trait.

The influence of climate on the basal metabolic rate of small mammals: a slow-fast metabolic continuum

The influence of climate (mean annual rainfall, rainfall variability, ambient temperature, T(a)) on the basal metabolic rate (BMR) of 267 small mammals (<1 kg) from six zoogeographical zones was investigated using conventional and phylogenetically independent data (linear contrasts). All climate variables varied between zones, as did BMR and body temperature ( T(b)), but not thermal conductance. Holarctic zones were more seasonal and colder, but rainfall was less variable, than non-Holarctic zones. In general, the BMR was most strongly influenced by body mass, followed by T(a) and the rainfall variables. However, there was significant variation in the strength of these relationships between zones. BMR and T(b) increased with latitude, and mass-independent BMR and T(b) were positively correlated. The latter relationship offers evidence of a slow-fast metabolic continuum in small mammals. The fast end of the continuum (high BMR) is associated with the highest latitudes where BMR is most strongly influenced by T(a) and mean annual rainfall (i.e. mean productivity). The slow end of the continuum (low BMR) is associated with the semi-tropics, low productivity zones, and climatically unpredictable zones, such as deserts. Here rainfall variability has the strongest influence on BMR after body size. The implications of a slow-fast metabolic continuum are discussed in terms of various models associated with the evolution of BMR, such as the aerobic capacity models and the "energetic definition of fitness" models.

Thermoregulation in three species of Afrotropical subterranean mole-rats (Rodentia: Bathyergidae) from Zambia and Angola and scaling within the genus Cryptomys

The thermoregulatory characteristics of three species of Cryptomys from Zambia and Angola are examined and, together with published data on four other species of Cryptomys from southern Africa, used to determine whether scaling occurs in this genus of subterranean rodents. The thermoregulatory properties of acclimated giant Zambian mole-rats, Cryptomys mechowi ([Formula: see text]=267 g), Angolan mole-rats, Cryptomys bocagei ([Formula: see text]=94 g) and Zambian common mole-rats Cryptomys hottentotus amatus ([Formula: see text]=77 g) are as follows. Mean resting metabolic rates (RMRs) within the respective thermoneutral zones were 0.60±0.08 cm³ O₂ g^-1 h^-1 (n=12) for C. mechowi; 0.74±0.06 cm³ O₂ g^-1 h^-1 (n=8) for C. bocagei and 0.63±0.06 cm³O₂ g^-1 h^-1 (n=21) for C. h. amatus. The thermoneutral zones (TNZs) of all three species are narrow: 29-30°C for C. mechowi; 31.5-32.5°C for C. bocagei and 28-32° C for C. h. amatus. The increase in mean RMR at the lowest temperatures tested (15° C for C. mechowi, 18° C for C. bocagei and C. h. amatus) was 2.35, 2.2 and 3.82 times their RMR in the TNZ respectively. Body temperatures are low, 34±0.53° C (n=24) for C. mechowi, 33.7±0.32° C (n=20) for C. bocagei and 33.8±0.43° C (n=40) for C. h amatus. At the lower limit of thermoneutrality, conductances are 0.09±0.01 cm³ O₂ g^-1 h^-1 °C^-1 (n=30) in C. mechowi; 0.12±0.01 cm³ O₂ g^-1 h^-1 °C^-1 (n=20) in C. bocagei and 0.12±0.03 cm³ O₂ g^-1 h^-1 °C^-1 (n=32) in C. h. amatus. The range in mean body mass among the seven species of Cryptomys examined for scaling was 60 g (C. darlingi) to 267 g (C. mechowi). There is no clear relationship between RMR within the TNZ and body mass. The resultant relationship is represented by the power curve RMR=2.45 mass^-0.259.

Thermoregulatory patterns of two sympatric rodents: Otomys unisulcatus and Parotomys brantsii

1. The adaptations to an arid environment in two closely related rodent species were investigated. 2. The rate of oxygen consumption (VO2), body temperature (Tb), evaporative water loss and minimal conductance in Otomys unisulcatus and Parotomys brantsii were determined under controlled conditions at ambient temperatures (Ta), ranging from 11-31 C. 3. Physiological features atypical of desert-adapted rodents include a basal metabolic rate higher than predicted by body mass, the low "lower critical temperature" and symptoms of heat stress at 31 degrees C. 4. The low Tb and wide thermoneutral zone recorded for both species are characteristic of desert rodent species. 5. These species' physiological abilities reflect their mesic phylogeny and we suggest that behaviour must play an important role in their survival in semi-arid areas.

Thermal freedom of Graomys griseoflavus in a seasonal environment

1. Thermal freedom, defined as the physiological potential to make full spatiotemporal use of the seasonal thermal macroclimate, was assessed in Graomys griseoflavus, a cricetid rodent inhabiting the Chaco Province in Argentina. 2. The extent of the physiological thermal range (58 degrees C) was larger than the seasonal thermal range (30-50 degrees C), favoring Graomys resistance to low winter temperatures. The upper physiological thermal limit was almost coincident with the highest extreme of summer temperatures. 3. Graomys thermal freedom is facilitated by a high evaporative water loss, high metabolic capability, wide thermal neutral zone and a 4 degrees C lability of body temperature. 4. Behavioral responses (thermal avoidance) are utilized by this species, but with no apparent loss in thermal freedom.
