The late Nd reflects a memory trace containing amodal spatial information

Neural markers of automatic and controlled attention during immediate and delayed action

It has been shown that visually guided and memory-guided actions are under the control of dissociable neural systems. This experiment measured event-related potentials (ERPs) in a cross-modal dual-task paradigm to investigate the attentional requirements of these two types of actions. In a primary joystick-controlled continuous reciprocal aiming task, participants moved a cursor back and forth between two targets of variable size in visually guided (VIS) and memory-guided (MEM) conditions. In a secondary dichotic listening task, ERPs were collected while infrequent high and frequent low pitch tones were delivered to both ears. Participants responded to the infrequent tones delivered to only one attended ear. Aiming and listening were performed separately and together as a dual task. We were interested in two ERP components: the P300 component, which reflects voluntary attention, and the mismatch negativity (MMN), which reflects automatic attention. The results showed that the P300 component elicited by the auditory task was decreased in amplitude by the dual-task conditions compared with the auditory task alone. Moreover, P300 latency was increased by the MEM aiming condition, but not the VIS aiming condition. On the other hand, the MMN component elicited by the auditory task was only attenuated by the VIS aiming condition, not by the MEM aiming condition. Together, these results suggest that memory-guided aiming requires more voluntary attention and less automatic attention than visually guided aiming.

ERP evidence of early cross-modal links between auditory selective attention and visuo-spatial memory

Previous dual-task research pairing complex visual tasks involving non-spatial cognitive processes during dichotic listening have shown effects on the late component (Ndl) of the negative difference selective attention waveform but no effects on the early (Nde) response suggesting that the Ndl, but not the Nde, is affected by non-spatial processing in a dual-task. Thus to further explore the nature of this dissociation and whether the Nd waveform is affected by spatial processing; fourteen adult participants performed auditory dichotic listening in conjunction with visuo-spatial memory in a cross-modal dual-task paradigm. The results showed that the visuo-spatial memory task decreased both the Nde and Ndl waveforms, and also attenuated P300 and increased its latency. This pattern of results suggests that: (1) the Nde reflects a memory trace that is shared with vision when the information is spatial in nature, and (2) P300 latency appears to be influenced by the discriminability of stimuli underlying the Nde and Ndl memory trace.

Attention to human speakers in a virtual auditory environment: brain potential evidence

Listening to a speech message requires the accurate selection of the relevant auditory input especially when distracting background noise or other speech messages are present. To investigate such auditory selection processes we presented three different speech messages simultaneously spoken by different actors at separate spatial locations (-70, 0, 70/ azimuth). Stimuli were recorded using an artificial head with microphones embedded in the "auditory canals" to capture the interaural time and level differences as well as some of the filter properties of the outer ear structures as auditory spatial cues, thus creating a realistic virtual auditory space. In a given experimental run young healthy participants listened via headphones and either attended to the rightmost or the leftmost message in order to comprehend the story. Superimposed on the speech messages task irrelevant probe stimuli (syllables sharing spatial and spectral characteristics, 4 probes/s) were presented that were used for the generation of event-related brain potentials computed from 29 channels of EEG. ERPs to probe stimuli were characterized by a negativity starting at 250 ms with a contralateral frontal maximum for the probes sharing spatial/spectral features of the attended story relative to those for the unattended message. The relatively late onset of this attention effect was interpreted to reflect the task demands in this complex auditory environment. This study demonstrates the feasibility to use virtual auditory environments in conjunction with the probe technique to study auditory selection under realistic conditions.

Development of auditory selective attention: event-related potential measures of channel selection and target detection

In this study, we examined developmental changes in auditory selective attention using both electrophysiological (Nd, P3b) and behavioral measures while two groups of children (9- and 12-year-olds) and adults were engaged in a two-channel selective attention task. Channel was determined by frequency (1000 or 2000 Hz). Targets in one condition were shorter than the standards (duration target) and in the other were softer (intensity target). We found that the Nd onset and peak latencies for the children were significantly longer than for the adults. Nd amplitude, however, did not differ between the groups. Further, all groups evidenced P3b to attended targets but not to unattended deviants. Hits, reaction times, and false alarms to unattended deviants continued to evidence improvements through adolescence. Taken together, our data are most consistent with a model of developmental improvement in the speed and efficiency of attention allocation.
