Abstract
Introduction Tooth cervical abrasion (CA) is a prevalent non-carious cervical lesion that poses challenges for accurate diagnosis from periapical radiographs due to difficulties in assessing the lesion's extent, associated bone loss, and pulpal involvement. The presence of overlying bone structures on the palatal side when lesions are located on the buccal side, or vice versa, further complicates radiographic interpretation. So it is important to define the lesions in all three dimensions. Objective To provide a three-dimensional descriptive classification for cervical abrasion lesions using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). Method A total of 50 patients with cervical abrasion were selected for the study. From these patients, teeth (n = 10) from each of the four different quadrants were chosen. A CBCT scan with a 6 × 6 cm field of view (FOV) was performed, and the DICOM files of the cervical lesions were transferred to 3-D imaging software. The CBCT images of the cervical abrasion lesions were assessed at the level of the deepest point of the lesion along the long axis of the tooth in both axial and sagittal planes. The height (A), buccolingual dimension (B), circumferential spread (C), and remaining dentine thickness (D) were evaluated and classified using new scoring criteria for each dimension. The reliability and reproducibility of the classification were assessed to ensure its clinical applicability. Conclusion CBCT can be utilized to classify tooth cervical abrasion in endodontics, enhancing diagnosis, analysis, and treatment outcomes. This three-dimensional view facilitates easier communication among clinicians, allows for tailored treatment approaches, and opens new avenues for research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study presents a scoping review to determine the association between tooth wear and bruxism. DATA A protocol was developed a priori (Open Science Framework (DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/CS7JX)). Established scoping review methods were used for screening, data extraction, and synthesis. Risk of bias was assessed using JBI tools. Direct associations between tooth wear and bruxism were assessed. SOURCES Embase, SCOPUS, Web of Science, Cochrane, and PubMed were searched. STUDY SELECTION Any clinical study containing tooth wear and bruxism assessment done on humans in any language was included. Animal, in-vitro studies and case reports were excluded. CONCLUSIONS Thirty publications reporting on the association between tooth wear and bruxism were included. The majority of publications were cross-sectional studies (90%) while only three were longitudinal (10%). Eleven papers assessed definitive bruxism for analysis (instrumental tools), one paper assessed probable bruxism (clinical inspection with self-report) and eighteen assessed possible bruxism (self-report). Of the eleven papers assessing definitive bruxism, eight also reported outcomes of non-instrumental tools. Tooth wear was mostly scored using indexes. Most studies reported no or weak associations between tooth wear and bruxism, except for the studies done on cervical tooth wear. When bruxism assessment was done through self-report, more often an association was found. Studies using multivariate analyses did not find an association between tooth wear and bruxism, except the cervical wear studies. Evidence shows inconclusive results as to whether bruxism and tooth wear are related or not. Therefore, well-designed longitudinal trials are needed to address this gap in the literature. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Based on the evidence, dental clinicians should not infer bruxism activity solely on the presence of tooth wear.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tooth wear (TW) prevalence is high and increasing and has important consequences on the patient's quality of life. Knowledge of risk factors is crucial to promote diagnosis, prevention strategies and timely interceptive treatment. Many studies have identified TW risk factors. OBJECTIVE This scoping review aims to map and describe suspected available factors associated with TW in permanent dentition based on quantitative measurement. METHODS The scoping review was conducted using the PRISMA extension of the Scoping Reviews checklist. The search was conducted in October 2022 from the Medline® (PubMed® interface) and Scopus® databases. Two independent reviewers selected and characterised the studies. RESULTS 2702 articles were identified for assessment of titles and abstracts, and 273 articles were included in the review. The results show a need to standardise TW measurement indices and the study design. The included studies highlighted various factors, classified into nine domains: sociodemographic factors, medical history, drinking habits, eating habits, oral hygiene habits, dental factors, bruxism and temporomandibular disorders, behavioural factors, and stress. Results related to chemical TW (erosion) risk factors underline the importance of eating disorders, gastroesophageal reflux and lifestyle, particularly drinking and eating behaviours, which supports developing public health information campaigns and interventions. Besides chemical, this review identifies evidence of several mechanical TW risk factors, such as toothbrushing and bruxism; the influence of this last factor needs to be further explored. CONCLUSIONS TW management and prevention require a multidisciplinary approach. Dentists are in the first line to detect associated diseases such as reflux or eating disorders. Consequently, practitioners' information and guideline diffusion should be promoted, and a TW risk factors checklist (the ToWeR checklist) is proposed to help diagnostic approaches.

Abstract
Human tooth enamel must withstand the cyclic contact forces, wear, and corrosion processes involved with typical oral functions. Furthermore, unlike other human tissues, dental enamel does not have a significant capacity for healing or self-repair and thus the longevity of natural teeth in the oral environment depends to a large degree on the fatigue and wear properties of enamel. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of our understanding of the fatigue and wear mechanisms of human enamel and how they relate to in vivo observations of tooth damage in the complex oral environment. A key finding of this review is that fatigue and wear processes are closely related. For example, the presence of abrasive wear particles significantly lowers the forces needed to initiate contact fatigue cracking while subsurface fatigue crack propagation drives key delamination wear mechanisms during attrition or attrition-corrosion of enamel. Furthermore, this review seeks to bring a materials science and mechanical engineering perspective to fatigue and wear phenomena. In this regard, we see developing a mechanistic description of fatigue and wear, and understanding the interconnectivity of the processes, as essential for successfully modelling enamel fatigue and wear damage and developing strategies and treatments to improve the longevity of our natural teeth. Furthermore, we anticipate that this review will stimulate ideas for extending the lifetime of the natural tooth structure and will help highlight where our understanding is too limited and where additional research into fatigue and wear of human tooth enamel is warranted.

Abstract
Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a rising concern in clinical dentistry that causes pain and discomfort and negatively affects the quality of life of patients. Indian Society of Periodontology conducted a nationwide survey, involving 3000 dentists in December 2020, which revealed significant knowledge gaps regarding DH, viz., under-diagnosis, incorrect differential diagnosis, and treatment strategies/recommendations for the management of DH patients in daily clinical practice. The current paper has been envisioned and conceptualized to update the practicing Indian dentists regarding the so-called enigma of dentistry "Dentin Hypersensitivity," based on the best available contemporary evidence. An expert panel was constituted comprising 30 subject experts from across the country, which after extensive literature review and group discussions formulated these recommendations. The panel advocated routine screening of all dentate patients for exposed dentin areas and DH to avoid under-diagnosis of the condition and suggested an early preventive management. Consensus guidelines/recommendations for the use of desensitizing agents (DAs) at home, including the use of herbal agents, are also provided within the backdrop of the Indian context. The guidelines recommend that active management of DH shall be accomplished by a combination of at home and in-office therapies, starting with the simplest and cost-effective home use of desensitizing toothpastes. A diagnostic decision tree and a flowchart for application in daily practice are designed to manage the patients suffering from DH or presenting with exposed dentin areas in dentition. Various treatment methods to manage DH have been discussed in the paper, including the insights from previously published treatment guidelines. Further, a novel system of classification of DH patients based on specific case definitions has been developed for the first time. Explicit charts regarding the available treatment options and the chronology of institution of the agent, for the management in different case categories of DH, have been provided for quick reference. The management strategy takes into account a decision algorithm based on hierarchy of complexity of treatment options and intends to improve the quality of life of the patient by long-term maintenance with an innovatively defined triple C's or 3Cs approach.

Abstract
Most sleep bruxism (SB) episodes are accompanied by an increase in sympathetic tone and heart rate (HR). To characterise heart rate (HR) changes in relation to rhythmic masticatory muscle activities (RMMAs) in SB patients, polysomnographic recordings were performed on 10 SB patients and 11 normal controls. The duration of movement events, amplitude and duration of HR increases, and time to reach HR peak associated with RMMAs and limb movements (LMs) were determined, and the relationships of the parameters of HR increases with types of movements and RMMAs were analysed. All of the parameters of HR increases associated with three types of movements (RMMAs, RMMAs + LMs and LMs) and masseter activities (phasic, tonic and mixed) were significantly different (two-way ANOVA, P < .001 for all) in both SB patients and controls. The duration of RMMAs/LMs was positively correlated with the parameters (SB patients: R2 = .24-.85, P < .0001; controls: R2 = .23-.68, P < .0001). The amplitude of HR increases was also positively correlated with respiration changes in the SB patients (R2 = .3258, P < .0001) and controls (R2 = .09469, P < .05). The proportions of phasic RMMAs associated with awakenings, microarousals and no cortical arousals were significantly different and so were the proportions of tonic and mixed RMMAs (Friedman's tests, P < .05-.001). The HR increases associated with RMMAs may be intrinsic to the cortical arousal response and autonomic activation, and differences in HR increases associated with different types of movements and RMMAs might be related to the changes in respiration and differences in cortical arousal levels.

Abstract
Dental abrasion is most commonly seen at the cervical necks of teeth, but can occur in any area, even inter-dentally from vigorous and incorrect use of dental floss. Acid erosion has been implicated in the initiation and progress of the cervical lesion, while tooth-brush abrasion has long been held as the prime cause of cervical abrasion. Identification of the risk factors is clearly important in order to modify any habits and provide appropriate advice.

Abstract
Many in vitro tooth models do not incorporate periodontal ligament (PDL) simulation. This study presents the influence of physiologically loaded occlusal splints on cervical strains in a model incorporating roots and PDL. Four sets (N = 10) of occlusal splints differing in material (hard/soft) and location (upper/lower) were prepared for first maxillary and mandibular anatomic molars. Two strain gauges were bonded to the buccal and lingual aspects of the lower molar. Teeth were embedded in acrylic resin with/without a PDL-simulating material. Force vs. strain data were acquired during loading and the maximal strains at 500 N were analyzed. When PDL was incorporated into the model without splints, buccal compressive strains were significantly decreased. Usage of a soft splint resulted in compressive strains on both tooth aspects. Usage of a hard splint on the lower tooth resulted in higher compressive strains on the lingual side compared with the buccal side, whereas usage of this splint on the upper tooth resulted in tensile strains on the lingual side. Bending towards the buccal side occurred when the splints were located on the upper tooth. Soft splints reduce buccal bending, but do not reduce cervical strains. Periodontal ligament stimulation materials should therefore be incorporated in models involving teeth.
