COST OF REPRODUCTION IN POLEMONIUM VISCOSUM: PHENOTYPIC AND GENETIC APPROACHES

Water availability drives population divergence and sex-specific responses in a dioecious plant

PREMISE

Water availability is an important abiotic factor, resulting in differences between plant species growing in xeric and mesic habitats. Species with populations occurring in both habitat types allow examination of whether water availability has acted as a selective force at the intraspecific level. Investigating responses to water availability with a dioecious species allows determination of whether males and females, which often have different physiologies and life histories, respond differently.

METHODS

An experiment varying water availability was performed under an outdoor rain-out shelter using plants from two mesic and two xeric populations of the dioecious plant Silene latifolia. Early growth rate, flowering propensity, flower size, and specific leaf area were measured. At the end of the season, the plants were harvested, aboveground and root biomass were measured, and the total number of flowers and fruit produced were counted.

RESULTS

Compared to the two mesic populations, plants from the two xeric populations grew more slowly, were less likely to flower, took longer to flower, had thicker leaves, invested less in aboveground biomass and more in root biomass, produced fewer flowers and fruit, but were more likely to live. Many traits exhibited significant habitat type × treatment interactions. Compared to the xeric populations, males-but not females-from mesic populations had less root biomass and greatly reduced their flower production in response to low water availability.

CONCLUSIONS

Mesic and xeric populations responded in ways congruent with water availability being a selective force for among-population divergence, especially for males.

Inflorescence photosynthetic contribution to fitness releases Arabidopsis thaliana plants from trade-off constraints on early flowering

Leaves are thought to be the primary carbon source for reproduction in plants, so a positive relationship between vegetative size and reproductive output is expected, establishing a trade-off between time to reproduction and reproductive output. A common response to higher temperatures due to climate changes is the induction of earlier transition into reproduction. Thus, in annual plants, earlier transition into flowering can potentially constrain plant size and reduce seed production. However, trade-offs between early reproduction and fitness are not always observed, suggesting mechanisms to escape the constraints of early flowering do exist. Here, we test whether inflorescence photosynthesis contribution to the reproductive output of Arabidopsis thaliana can offset the cost of early reproduction. We followed the development, growth rate and fitness of 15 accessions, and removed all rosette leaves at flowering (prior to the completion of inflorescence development or any fruit production) in half of the plants to determine the ability of inflorescences to maintain fitness in the absence of leaves. Although leaf removal significantly reduced fruit number, seed weight and plant height, even the most severely impacted accessions maintained 35% of their fitness with the inflorescence as the sole photosynthetic organ; and some accessions experienced no reduction in fitness. Differences between accessions in their ability to maintain fitness after leaf removal is best explained by earlier flowering time and the ability to maintain as many or more branches after leaf removal as in the control treatment. Although earlier flowering does constrain plant vegetative size, we found that inflorescence photosynthesis can significantly contribute to seed production, explaining why early flowering plants can maintain high fitness despite a reduction in vegetative size. Thus, plants can be released from the usually assumed trade-offs associated with earlier reproduction, and selection on inflorescence traits can mediate the impact of climate change on phenology.

PLEIOTROPY CAUSES LONG-TERM GENETIC CONSTRAINTS ON LIFE-HISTORY EVOLUTION IN BRASSICA RAPA

Fundamental, long-term genetic trade-offs constrain life-history evolution in wild crucifer populations. I studied patterns of genetic constraint in Brassica rapa by estimating genetic correlations among life-history components by quantitative genetic analyses among ten wild populations, and within four populations. Genetic correlations between age and size at first reproduction were always greater than +0.8 within and among all populations studied. Although quantitative genetics might provide insight about genetic constraints if genetic parameters remain approximately constant, little evidence has been available to determine the constancy of genetic correlations. I found strong and consistent estimates of genetic correlations between life-history components, which were very similar within four natural populations. Population differentiation also showed these same trade-offs, resulting from long-term genetic constraint. For some traits, evolutionary changes among populations were incompatible with a model of genetic drift. Historical patterns of natural selection were inferred from population differentiation, suggesting that correlated response to selection has caused some traits to evolve opposite to the direct forces of natural selection. Comparison with Arabidopsis suggests that these life-history trade-offs are caused by genes that regulate patterns of resource allocation to different components of fitness. Ecological and energetic models may correctly predict these trade-offs because there is little additive genetic variation for rates of resource acquisition, but resource allocation is genetically variable.

The costs of reproduction in plants

This review reports on the processes associated with costs of reproduction, including some theoretical considerations, definitions and methodological aspects, followed by a list of the situations where costs are difficult to find. Despite some exceptions, case studies, examined by trade-offs between reproduction and other life-history traits, generally support the predictions of the cost of reproduction hypothesis. The cost of reproduction as an evolutionary determinant of sexual dimorphism in life history traits in dioecious species was specifically tested, considering that the higher cost of reproduction in females has driven the life history traits related to sexual dimorphism. Females of woody dioecious species were consistently smaller than males supporting the costs of reproduction hypothesis. By contrast, females of herbaceous perennials were generally the larger sex, which did not fit the expectations of the hypothesis. Finally, the mechanisms that enable the compensation of the reproductive costs are detailed, including the plastic responses of photosynthesis and growth, the effects of the timing of investment, plant architecture and plant physiological integration. High and Dry: Drought Stress, Sex-Allocation Trade-offs, and Selection on Flower Size in the Alpine Wildflower Polemonium viscosum (Polemoniaceae)

Sex-allocation trade-offs may maintain variation in secondary sexual characteristics if such traits vary in their benefits or costs in association with different genders. In Polemonium viscosum, large flowers benefit both male and female aspects of reproduction. In this study, I explore how resource investment in flower size influences the cost of allocation to male and female function. Large flowers exact a water cost in P. viscosum under dry conditions. In an extreme drought in 1997, experimentally watered plants had higher survival and fecundity than controls. By comparing allocation patterns between plants dying from drought and survivors, I tested whether the demographic cost of large flowers increases with allocation to fecundity. Controls that died showed a positive relationship between flower size and fruit production, while survivors showed a negative relationship or trade-off. Watered plants showed no such trade-off. To test whether drought affects the relationship of corolla size to male function, I used leaf-water potential in 1998 to classify plants as stressed or unstressed. Corolla size showed positive correlations to pollen per flower regardless of drought stress. I conclude that under drought the demographic cost of producing large flowers is gender dependent, such that viability selection favors either small-flowered plants with female-biased reproduction or larger-flowered plants with male-biased reproduction.

Effects of flower production and predispersal seed predation on reproduction in Cirsium purpuratum

Researchers have often assumed that the reproductive success of a plant increases with flower production. However, if predispersal seed predation also increases with flower production, this may counteract the increase in reproductive success expected with such increased flower production. To investigate this, we examined the effect of flower number and predispersal seed predation on seed production in two field populations of Cirsium purpuratum (Maxim.) Matsum. At both sites, the proportion of seeds or heads preyed upon per plant increased with the number of flowers (florets or heads) on each plant, while the proportion of mature seeds per plant was independent of flower number per plant. Based on these results, we predicted that an increased level of seed predation at the population level would reduce the annual flower production of each plant. The observed pattern of flower production supported this prediction. Our results suggest that increased flower production may not always improve plant reproductive success under the influence of predispersal seed predation.Key words: plant reprodutive success, predispersal seed predation, Cirsium purpuratum, flower production, plant-animal interaction.

Reproductive trade-offs in genetically distinct clones ofVaccinium macrocarpon, the American cranberry

Patterns of resource allocation to growth, current reproduction, and potential future reproduction were quantified in six genetically distinct cultivars ofVaccinium macrocarpon. For all cultivars (genotypes), vegetative size is positively correlated with some measures of current reproduction (fruit and flower number) but negatively correlated with others (seed number per fruit, seed weight per fruit). Vegetative growth in the current year is significantly related to the production of reproductive terminal buds, a measure of the potential for reproduction in the following year. Stems with low levels of current reproduction - lower flower number, fruit number, and seed weight - were more likely to form reproductive terminal buds than stems with higher levels of current reproduction. Individual genotypes differed significantly for vegetative size, fruit number, fruit weight, seed number, and seed weight, as well as for the frequency of fruiting stems and reproductive terminal buds produced. Genotypes were segregated in principal component space, indicating overall differences between them in allocation to the suite of variables measured. These results indicate the possibility of fitness differences among cultivars due to genetically determined allocation strategy, which has implications for fitness differences among genotypes within natural populations.
