Abstract
Endoscopic ultrasound-guided tissue acquisition (EUS-TA) has undergone significant advancements since it was first reported in 1992. Initially focused on the pancreas, EUS-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) has now been extended to encompass all organs proximal to the gastrointestinal system. Recently, a novel fine-needle biopsy (FNB) needle with an end-cut tip was developed, allowing for the collection of specimens suitable for histological assessment, a feat hard to achieve with traditional needles. The FNB needle holds promise for applications in immunohistochemistry staining and genetics evaluation, and it has the potential to yield specimens of comparable quality to core needle biopsy during percutaneous puncture, especially for lesions beyond the pancreas, such as lymph nodes. This review focuses on the efficacy of EUS-FNA/FNB for extended target regions, specifically lymph nodes, spleen, adrenal gland, and ascites. The indications for EUS-FNA have greatly expanded beyond the pancreas over the years, and future improvements and innovations in puncture needles will allow for the collection of higher-quality specimens, which is expected to play a significant part in personalized cancer treatment.

Abstract
Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) is an important diagnostic technique to accurately diagnose diseases originating from organs near the gastrointestinal tract. EUS-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) has improved the histopathological diagnosis. EUS-FNA has been further developed over a long period of 40 years. The history of the development of endosonographic scopes, ultrasonographic observation systems, puncture needles, and puncture methods will provide a springboard for future development.

Endoscopic ultrasound-guided tissue acquisition for splenic lesions: A systematic review and meta-analysis of diagnostic test accuracy. PLoS One 2022; 17:e0276529. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS At present, it is difficult and risky to diagnose splenic lesions by conventional needle biopsy using computed tomography (CT) or ultrasound (US). Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided tissue acquisition is increasingly being used as a new technique to determine the tissue diagnosis of splenic lesions. Therefore, our goal was to determine the efficacy and safety of EUS-guided tissue acquisition for splenic lesions. METHODS We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the pooled sensitivity and specificity of EUS-guided tissue acquisition for the diagnosis of splenic lesions using Metadisc. The Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies Questionnaire, a quality assessment tool, was used to scrutinize the quality of the studies. RESULTS Six eligible studies between January 2000 and June 2022 were identified, and a total number of 62 patients (aged range from 19 to 84) were enrolled. One patient was excluded because of insufficient specimens. The pooled sensitivity and specificity of included studies were 0.85 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.73-0.93] and 0.77 (95% CI, 0.46-0.95), respectively. The pooled positive likelihood ratio (LR) was 2.38 (95% CI, 1.24-4.57), the pooled negative LR was 0.31 (95% CI, 0.17-0.55), the pooled diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) was 8.67 (95% CI, 2.80-26.82), the area under the summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) curve was 0.8100 (Standard Error 0.0813). CONCLUSION EUS-guided tissue acquisition is a safe technique with high sensitivity in the diagnosis of splenic lesions. However, because of the small sample sizes, more studies with more cases are needed to further validate these results.

Abstract
Background Focal splenic lesions are usually incidentally discovered on radiological assessments. Although percutaneous tissue acquisition (TA) under trans-abdominal ultrasound guidance is a well-established technique for obtaining cyto-histological diagnosis of focal splenic lesions, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided TA has been described in several studies, reporting different safety and outcomes. The aim was to assess the pooled safety, adequacy, and accuracy of EUS-TA of splenic lesions. Methods A comprehensive review of available evidence was conducted at the end of November 2021. All studies including more than five patients and reporting about the safety, adequacy, and accuracy of EUS-TA of the spleen were included. Results Six studies (62 patients) were identified; all studies have been conducted using fine-needle aspiration (FNA) needles. Pooled specimen adequacy and accuracy of EUS-TA for spleen characterization were 92.8% [95% confidence interval (CI), 86.3%–99.3%] and 88.2% (95% CI, 79.3%–97.1%), respectively. The pooled incidence of adverse events (six studies, 62 patients) was 4.7% (95% CI, 0.4%–9.7%). Conclusion EUS-FNA of the spleen is a safe technique with high diagnostic adequacy and accuracy. The EUS-guided approach could be considered a valid alternative to the percutaneous approach for spleen TA.

Abstract
Accessory spleens are common congenital anatomic variations that are usually asymptomatic. On the other hand, they can be clinically significant if complicated by hemorrhage, torsion, or infarction. This paper describes a case of an infarcted accessory spleen in a 30-year-old male who presented with abdominal pain. Abdominal CT and MRI revealed an isolated mass, 4.5 cm in size, in the perisplenic area. An infarcted accessory spleen was suspected. The patient underwent laparoscopic accessory splenectomy. Histopathology identified the mass as splenic tissue that had undergone ischemic necrosis. A definitive diagnosis of an infarcted accessory spleen was made, and the patient was discharged on day 5 after surgery symptom-free.

Abstract
The World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB) is addressing the issue of incidental findings (IFs) with a series of publications entitled "Incidental Imaging Findings-The Role of Medical Ultrasound." IFs are less commonly encountered in the spleen than in many other abdominal organs but remain a frequent dilemma in clinical practice. A histological diagnosis is rarely necessary for patient management. Many IFs, such as secondary spleens and splenic cysts, are harmless and do not require any further investigation. The diagnosis of many other focal splenic lesions is, however, often problematic. The following overview is intended to illustrate a variety of incidentally detected spleen pathologies such as size variants, shape variants, secondary spleens, focal splenic lesions and splenic calcifications. It should aid the examiner in establishing the diagnosis. Moreover, it should help the ultrasound practitioner decide which pathologies need no further investigation, those requiring interval imaging and cases in which immediate further diagnostic procedures are required.

Abstract
Due to the relatively high complication rate, the necessity of a spleen biopsy is controversially discussed. In establishing its indication, the clinical background and performed diagnostics must be considered. Based on the medical history, imaging procedures and sonographic course, different clinical scenarios are conceivable. The aim of this review is to describe the indications of splenic biopsy considering various clinical scenarios.

Abstract
Background and study aims The diagnosis of malignant lymphoma (ML) is sometimes difficult, especially in patients with primary splenic malignant lymphomas (psML) which have no lymph nodes capable of acting as the biopsy target. We carried out endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) for "splenic parenchyma" in patients suspected of having a psML, even without any obvious neoplastic lesions in the spleen. Patients and methods A retrospective study using medical records was conducted of eight patients suspected of having a psML that received EUS-FNA for the splenic parenchyma between January 2016 and January 2019. Data analyzed included clinical background, EUS-FNA procedure (puncture needle/route), diagnostic ability (pathological/flow cytometry [FCM]), and complications. Results EUS-FNA was performed from the stomach in all eight cases, and no patients had complications. As a result of splenic parenchymal biopsy found on EUS-FNA, 75 % of patients (6/8) were histologically diagnosed with MLs, monoclonality of B-cells was identified in all cases (8/8) with FCM, and all patients (8/8) were definitively diagnosed with psMLs. Conclusion EUS-FNA for "splenic parenchyma" is useful for patients with spML, even if they have no obvious neoplastic lesions in the spleen.

Considerable progress has been made recently in the use of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) to diagnose intra-luminal gastrointestinal lesions and extra-luminal lesions near the gastrointestinal tract. Numerous reports have indicated that EUS-FNA has high diagnostic performance and safety, which has led to the routine use of EUS-FNA and an increasing number of cases. Thus, while EUS-FNA has a low rate of complications, endoscopists may encounter these complications as the number of cases increases. Infrequent reports have also described life-threatening complications. Therefore, endoscopists should possess a comprehensive understanding of the complications of EUS-FNA, which include hemorrhage, perforation, infection, and acute pancreatitis, as well as their management. This review examines the available evidence regarding the complications associated with EUS-FNA, and the findings will be useful for ensuring that endoscopists perform EUS-FNA safely and appropriately.

Abstract
Splenic sarcoidosis is often diagnosed by splenectomy or an ultrasound-guided splenic biopsy. However, splenectomy is invasive and costly, and a percutaneous biopsy is sometimes difficult. We herein report a case of splenic sarcoidosis diagnosed with endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA). A 71-year-old man was referred to our hospital for abnormal shadows on a chest roentgenogram. Computed tomography showed multiple lesions in the spleen and pulmonary consolidations. Bronchoscopy revealed no definitive diagnosis. We therefore performed EUS-FNA for a splenic lesion that led to the diagnosis. This case suggests that EUS-FNA is useful in confirming the diagnosis of sarcoidosis with suspected splenic lesions.

AbstractSplenic metastasis is extremely rare and is part of diffuse carcinomatosis. We present a case of a 60-year-old woman with transitional cell ovarian carcinoma who had hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy in the past. She now presented with solitary splenic metastasis, confirmed by endoscopic ultrasound-guided transgastric fine needle aspiration biopsy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) is an important modality to obtain tissue diagnosis from mediastinal, pancreatic, and intra-abdominal lesions in close proximity to the pulmonary and gastrointestinal tract. It is considered to be a relatively safe, rapid, and minimally invasive technique with low complication rates. AIMS To determine the diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and outcome of EUS-FNA, with histological correlation where applicable. METHODS Data of all 1059 consecutive patients who underwent EUS-FNA from 1 January 2005 to 31 December 2017 at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Lahore was reviewed in this retrospective study. The major sites that were targeted for EUS-FNA were pancreatic (423), mediastinal (376), and other abdominal lesions (260). RESULTS The average number of passes per patient was 2.22. Rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) was adequate in 969 patients (91.4%). Concordance between ROSE and final cytology was 99.5%. Follow-up was available in 810 patients (76.4%). The overall diagnostic yield was 94.3%. Ancillary studies, including immunohistochemical stains and flow cytometry, helped to increase the diagnostic yield from 78.1% to 94.3%. The overall sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and diagnostic accuracy for EUS-FNA were 94.8%, 98.6%, 99.9%, 65.5%, and 95.1%, respectively. Seven of 1059 patients (0.6%) developed complications. CONCLUSION EUS-FNA is a very sensitive and specific diagnostic tool with a minimal complication rate. Ancillary studies helped to increase the sensitivity, as well as the diagnostic yield.

Abstract
Rapid onsite evaluation (ROSE) following endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS)-guided fine-needle aspiration contributes to the establishment of a diagnosis for various organs. Newly designed three-plane symmetric needles for EUS-guided fine-needle biopsy (EUS-FNB), such as the Franseen needle, have been developed to enable histological core tissue acquisition. However, EUS-guided tissue acquisition for hypervascular splenic lesions remains challenging. Tissue acquisition in cases of splenic malignant lymphoma by using a conventional needle with multiple strokes and suction may result in indeterminate ROSE due to blood contamination and tiny fragments of lymphoma tissue, whereas EUS-FNB by using the Franseen needle with a minimal number of strokes with suction demonstrates qualified specimens for the ROSE as well as histological examination. For splenic malignant lymphomas, EUS-FNB by using the Franseen needle with a limited number of strokes may facilitate qualified specimen acquisition.

Abstract
Tissue acquisition using EUS has considerably evolved since the first EUS-FNA was reported 25 years ago. Its introduction was an important breakthrough in the endoscopic field. EUS-FNA has now become a part of the diagnostic and staging algorithm for the evaluation of benign and malignant diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and of the organs in its proximity, including lung diseases. This review aims to present the history of EUS-FNA development and to provide a perspective on the recent developments in procedural techniques and needle technologies that have significantly extended the role of EUS and its clinical applications. There is a bright future ahead for EUS-FNA in the years to come as extensive research is conducted in this field and various technologies are continuously implemented into clinical practice.

Abstract
Introduction. Splenic tumor is usually found as an incidental finding on CT of abdomen. Traditionally, ultrasound (US) or computed tomography (CT) guided biopsies were employed for the purpose of sampling; however they have been reported to have a complication rate of 5.3%. Endoscopic ultrasound-fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) has been recently utilized for the purpose of sampling splenic tumors. In literature there are 7 reported instances where splenic lymphoma was diagnosed using EUS-FNA. We present a case of follicular B cell lymphoma of the spleen diagnosed using EUS-FNA. Case Report. 58-year-old female presented to her primary care physician for left upper quadrant abdominal pain for one week. Physical exam was significant for left upper quadrant tenderness. Her laboratory tests were within normal limits. She underwent CT scan of abdomen which revealed approximately 5 cm × 5 cm mass in spleen. EUS-FNA of the spleen revealed a large hypoechoic, heterogeneous, well-demarcated mass measuring 54.7 mm × 43.0 mm. Fine needle aspiration was performed, and the sample was submitted for cytology and flow cytometry. Flow cytometry revealed a lambda monotypic population of B cells displaying dim CD19 and CD10. Diagnosis of B cell non-Hodgkin low grade follicular lymphoma was made. Conclusion. Endoscopic ultrasound with fine needle aspiration is a very rare but safe, reliable method of diagnosis of splenic lymphomas.

Abstract
Our patient was a 48-year-old female, who presented with history of persistent low-grade fever and weight loss. The CT scan of the abdomen revealed multiple hypodense lesions in spleen. No primary focus of infection was detected in any other organs. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration of splenic lesion revealed granulomatous inflammation. The patient was started on anti-tuberculous therapy. There is a diagnostic possibility of splenic tuberculosis even in immunocompetent individuals and we chose a combination anti-tuberculous therapy as the first line treatment with consideration of splenectomy depending on the response.

Abstract
Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) is useful to obtain specimens from lesions underlying deep parts of the liver and spleen. However, the development of novel ancillary techniques must be explored to reduce the number of needle passes and potential adverse effects during this procedure. We conducted an animal study using a swine to demonstrate technical feasibility of in vivo cytological observation of liver and spleen using the high-resolution microendoscopy (HRME) system under EUS guidance. We successfully performed the study. No significant acute adverse events occurred during the procedure. The HRME system could obtain clear images representing cytology-level morphology of spleen and liver. Hence, it is found out that in vivo cytological observation of liver and spleen using the HRME system under EUS guidance is technically feasible.

Abstract
BACKGROUND EUS-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy (EUS-FNAB) of deep-seated lymphadenopathy is proposed to identify lymphoproliferative disorders when no superficial lesion is accessible. METHODS We analyzed prospectively collected data of 115 EUS-FNABs from 73 thoracic or abdomino-pelvic targets in 52 patients with suspected lymphoproliferative disorders (LPDs) between January 2005 and May 2011 from a single institution. Conventional histology and immunohistochemistry procedures were performed on samples. RESULTS No complications were recorded. An LPD was identified in 29 cases and ruled out in 21 cases. In 2 cases the analysis was negative, but an LPD was identified using a secondary procedure. For the identification of LPDs irrespective of subtype, this procedure has positive and negative predictive values of 100% and 91.3% respectively, with 93.6% sensitivity and 100% specificity. In 31 patients finally diagnosed with LPDs, an accurate diagnosis meeting the 2008 World Health Organization classification criteria was established in 21 (68%) cases, success being significantly associated with target size above 30 mm in multivariate analysis (odds ratio 7.47; p = 0.05). CONCLUSION EUS-FNAB of deep-seated lymphadenopathy with conventional morphological assessment appears to have a high diagnostic value for LPD identification and can obviate invasive surgery. A sub-classification was possible in two thirds of the cases.

Abstract
We reviewed the role of endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) and esophageal ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) in the pretherapeutic assessment of patients with proven or suspected lung cancer. EUS-FNA and EBUS-TBNA have been shown to have a good diagnostic accuracy in the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer. In the future, these techniques in combination with positron emission tomography/computed tomographic may replace surgical staging in patients with suspected and proven lung cancer, but until then surgical staging remains the gold standard for adequate preoperative evaluation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) is widely used to investigate posterior mediastinal and upper abdominal lesions. Previously, we noticed that the aortoiliac bifurcation can be visualized by transduodenal EUS scanning, and the surrounding area might be a potential target for EUS-guided FNA. This study aimed to determine the feasibility of using EUS-guided FNA to study lesions near the aortoiliac bifurcation via the upper gastrointestinal approach. METHODS This study was a prospective pilot study of consecutive patients with a lesion of unknown origin near the aortoiliac bifurcation. RESULTS EUS-guided FNA was used in six patients. The aortoiliac bifurcation was visible from the inferior duodenal angle in all patients; however, the lesions could be visualized in only five patients (3 via the transduodenal approach, and 2 via the transgastric approach). In one patient with a lesion on the left side, the lesion could not be visualized by either the transgastric or transduodenal approach. In the other five patients, EUS-guided FNA was successful, and FNA specimens were adequate for histopathological assessment. The diagnoses were lymphoma (n = 3), plasmacytoma (n = 1), and neurinoma (n = 1). All lymphoma cases were subclassified as diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (n = 2) or grade 2 follicular lymphoma (n = 1). No complications were observed. CONCLUSIONS The aortoiliac bifurcation was visible in all patients by transduodenal EUS scanning. FNA of the legions near the aortoiliac bifurcation was possible in five of six patients by using either the transgastric or transduodenal approach.

Abstract
Littoral cell angiomas are uncommon primary vascular neoplasms that arise from the sinusoidal lining or littoral cells of the splenic red pulp, and hence are unique to the spleen. We report a case of littoral cell angioma in 34-year-old woman, which was diagnosed by endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy (EUS-FNAB). The cytologic features of littoral cell angiomas have been described only in three previous case reports, one of which was a bench-top aspirate. In our case, we have utilized the fine-needle aspiration samples obtained by a linear endoscopic ultrasound examination for establishing the diagnosis. The characteristic cytologic features identified on the smears along with immunohistochemical analysis performed on the compact cellblock prepared from the aspirate aided in the confirmation of the diagnosis. We suggest that EUS-FNAB is a safe and reliable method in the diagnosis of vascular lesions of the spleen.

Abstract
This report presents the case of a 70-year-old woman with a previous history of a left nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma (RCC), who developed general malaise and fatigue. Abdominal computed tomography demonstrated an enhancing 6 × 7 cm necrotic lesion in the lower pole of the spleen suggestive of a metastasis. Given the highly suspicious nature of the lesion we proceeded to splenectomy. The tumour did not breach the splenic capsule, and there was no local diaphragmatic involvement. The mass was concluded to be a true metastasis of the original RCC rather than local recurrence of the disease. The causes of isolated solid splenic lesions are wide and varied, however a past or present history of malignancy should lead to a high index of suspicion for a splenic metastasis. We report an extremely unusual case of spread from a RCC.

Abstract
Access to the abdominal cavity is required for diagnostic and therapeutic endeavors for a variety of medical and surgical diseases. Historically, abdominal access has required a formal laparotomy to provide adequate exposure. Natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) is an emerging experimental alternative to conventional surgery that eliminates abdominal incisions and incision-related complications by combining endoscopic and laparoscopic techniques to diagnose and treat abdominal pathology. During NOTES, commercially available flexible video endoscopes are used to create a controlled transvisceral incision via natural orifice access to enter the peritoneal cavity. Common incision-related complications such as wound infections, incisional hernias, postoperative pain, aesthetic disdain, and adhesions could be minimized or eliminated by NOTES. NOTES has evolved from more than 2 centuries of technological innovations and continued growth in the field of surgical endoscopy. Innovative surgical endoscopists have slowly developed means to surpass the constraints of the gastrointestinal lumen by using a flexible endoscope. The future of surgical endoscopy may be the shared entity of NOTES, which further integrates endoscopy, gastroenterology, and minimally invasive and general surgery. Although the promise of NOTES is electrifying to surgeons and endoscopists, several key issues need to be characterized prior to the incorporation of NOTES into routine practice. This article reviews the status, contemporary body of literature, limitations, and potential future implications accompanying the development of NOTES.

Abstract
Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and EUS-guided fine needle aspiration have become important tools in evaluation of patients who have various gastrointestinal and nongastrointestinal disorders, and are being increasingly utilized at many centers. With over 10 years of worldwide published clinical data, the collective experience suggests that EUS is a safe tool. There are various measures that may be undertaken to help minimize the risks. In light of ongoing advances in interventional techniques and recognition of new procedural indications, the safety of all types of procedures and efforts to minimize EUS-related complications need to be periodically reexamined.

Abstract
This review, based on the Hennepin County Medical Center experience and review of the literature, vastly covers the up-to-date role of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) and EUS-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) in evaluating tumorous lesions of the gastrointestinal tract and adjacent organs. Emphasis is given to the tumoral and nodal staging of esophageal, pulmonary, and pancreatic cancer. This review also discusses technical, pathological, and gastroenterologic aspects and the role of the pathologist and endosonographer in the evaluation of these lesions, as well as the corresponding FNA cytology and differential diagnosis.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety of spleen aspiration as a sampling technique for the parasitological detection by culture and microscopy of Leishmania (chagasi) infantum. Two hundred and nine domiciled dogs from an endemic area for visceral leishmaniasis in Bahia State, Brazil, were studied. Most dogs (87%) were seropositive for anti-L. chagasi antibodies by ELISA. Clinical signs of disease were recorded and the animals monitored during and after spleen puncture in order to detect possible complications associated with the procedure. From a total of 257 splenic punctures in the 209 animals, only three minor events occurred, with no significant consequence for the animals and no association with risk factors. Leishmania was isolated from 149/180 (83%) seropositive dogs, and from 6/26 (23%) seronegative animals. The procedure did not cause adverse side effects or unnecessary suffering and confirmed the diagnosis in a large percentage of dogs. We conclude that spleen aspiration can be considered an effective and safe procedure for the definitive diagnosis of canine visceral leishmaniosis.

Abstract
Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is a combination of endoscopy and intraluminal ultrasonography. EUS also enables ultrasonographic images of high resolution to be obtained. However, whether a lesion is malignant or benign cannot be diagnosed solely from the findings of EUS. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy (EUS-FNAB) was developed to enhance the diagnostic capabilities of EUS by providing additional pathological findings. Though more than 10 years have passed since EUS-FNAB was first used for pancreatic disease, EUS FNAB has not been widely accepted in Japan. This may be due to the technical difficulties, relatively low sensitivity for the detection of malignancies, and Japanese gastroenterologists' and surgeons' inherent conservative way of thinking. We describe here a short history of EUS-FNAB, with details of technical tips, current indications and contraindications, diagnostic accuracy, and complications. The clinical utility of EUS-FNAB has been gradually understood and EUS-FNAB procedures have been increasing in number in Japan. So in the near future, EUS followed by EUS-FNAB will be routinely performed in the same manner as gastrointestinal endoscopy, followed by biopsy under direct vision. Also, therapeutic EUS procedures, such as EUS-guided celiac plexus neurolysis, pancreatic tumor ablation, drainage of pancreatic pseudocysts, and the development of an anastomosis may become feasible as less invasive and safer techniques than those used at present.

Abstract
AIM: This report gives a comprehensive overview of ultrasonography of splenic abnormalities. Certain ultrasonic features are also discussed with pathologic correlation.
METHODS: We review the typical ultrasonic characteristics of a wide range of splenic lesions, illustrating them with images obtained in our institution from 2000 to 2003. One hundred and three patients (47 men, 56 women), with a mean age of 54 years (range 9-92 years), were found to have an abnormal ultrasonic pattern of spleen.
RESULTS: We describe the ultrasonic features of various splenic lesions such as accessory spleen, splenomegaly, cysts, cavernous hemangiomas, lymphomas, abscesses, metastatic tumors, splenic infarctions, hematomas, and rupture, based on traditional gray-scale and color Doppler sonography.
CONCLUSION: Ultrasound is a widely available, noninvasive, and useful means of diagnosing splenic abnormalities. A combination of ultrasonic characteristics and clinical data may provide an accurate diagnosis. If the US appearance alone is not enough, US may also be used to guide biopsy of suspicious lesions.
