Coronavirus Disease 2019-Associated Thrombosis and Coagulopathy: Review of the Pathophysiological Characteristics and Implications for Antithrombotic Management

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus‐2, which has posed a significant threat to global health. Although the infection is frequently asymptomatic or associated with mild symptoms, in a small proportion of patients it can produce an intense inflammatory and prothrombotic state that can lead to acute respiratory distress syndrome, multiple organ failure, and death. Angiotensin‐converting enzyme 2, highly expressed in the respiratory system, has been identified as a functional receptor for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus‐2. Notably, angiotensin‐converting enzyme 2 is also expressed in the cardiovascular system, and there are multiple cardiovascular implications of COVID‐19. Cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular disease have been associated with severe manifestations and poor prognosis in patients with COVID‐19. More important, patients with COVID‐19 may have thrombotic and coagulation abnormalities, promoting a hypercoagulable state and resulting in an increased rate of thrombotic and thromboembolic events. This review will describe the pathophysiological characteristics of the cardiovascular involvement following infection by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus‐2, with a focus on thrombotic and thromboembolic manifestations and implications for antithrombotic management.

Chaperone-like activities of the CsaA protein of Bacillus subtilis

The growth and protein export defects of Escherichia coli secA51(Ts) strains can be suppressed by the CsaA protein of Bacillus subtilis. The present studies indicate that this effect can be attributed to chaperone-like activities of CsaA. First, CsaA stimulated protein export in secB, groES and dnaJ mutant strains of E. coli. Second, CsaA suppressed the growth defects of dnaK, dnaJ and grpE mutants of E. coli. Third, and most importantly, CsaA exhibited chaperone-like properties by stimulating the reactivation of heat-denatured firefly luciferase in groEL, groES, dnaK and grpE mutant strains of E. coli, and by preventing the aggregation of heat-denatured luciferase in vitro. Thus, it seems that CsaA suppresses the growth and secretion defects of E. coli secA(Ts) strains either by improving the translocation competence of exported pre-proteins, thereby making them better substrates for mutant SecA proteins, or by stimulating the translocation activity of mutant SecA proteins.

Physical and genetic map of the genome of Staphylococcus carnosus TM300

A genome map of Staphylococcus carnosus TM300, an important micro-organism in the food industry and long used as a starter culture, was constructed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis of DNA fragments obtained after digestion with NotI, SfiI and ApaI. The size of the chromosome was estimated to be 2590 kb. The fragments were assembled into a physical map using a combination of complementary methods including multiple and partial digests of genomic DNA, hybridization with homologous gene probes, and cross-Southern hybridization. Fifteen genes or gene clusters were positioned on the physical map by Southern hybridization analysis. The map provides a basis for further analysis of the S. carnosus chromosome.
