Abstract
Various factors influence marginal bone loss after implant placement. This study explored the association between marginal bone loss and posterior implants positioned at different bone levels. Computer records and radiographs of patients with at least 2 adjacent implants were retrieved. Cases were categorized into nonsplinted prosthesis and splinted prosthesis groups. Radiographic measurements were conducted at the time of abutment placement (T0), 1-3 years follow-up (T1), and the last visit (T2), measuring the vertical distance between adjacent implants. Multilevel linear regression models using generalized estimating equations were employed, with a significance level set at 5% (α = 0.05). Fifty-six patient records were included, comprising 120 implants: 84 nonsplinted (70%) and 36 splinted (30%). In the nonsplinted group, marginal bone loss progression significantly depended on crestal height differences. For the mesial sides of posterior implants, marginal bone loss measured 1.0 ± 0.6 mm from T0 to T1, 2.4 ± 1.1 mm from T1 to T2, and 3.4 ± 1.2 mm from T0 to T2. Similarly, the distal sides of the most anteriorly placed implant exhibited marginal bone loss of 1.0 ± 0.7 mm from T0 to T1, 2.4 ± 1.0 mm from T1 to T2, and 3.5 ± 1.2 mm from T0 to T2. Nonsplinted implants demonstrated a higher progression of marginal bone loss. This study suggests that nonsplinted implants may lead to a more pronounced progression of marginal bone loss, particularly concerning crestal height differences, underscoring the need for further research.

Abstract
AIM To compare between the rehabilitation of atrophied maxilla with fixed prosthesis using two posterior zygomatic implants and two conventional anterior implants or four implants inserted according to the all-on-four concept regarding the patient quality of life and satisfaction after one year of prosthesis insertion. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-six patients with atrophic edentulous maxillae were randomized into two groups: Group I (rehabilitated with fixed prostheses supported by two zygomatic and two conventional implants in the anterior region) and group II (fixed prostheses on four implants in the anterior region following an all-on-four concept). One year after the placement of the definitive prostheses, patients completed oral health impact profile-14 and satisfaction questionnaires. RESULTS All patients were satisfied regarding retention, stability, occlusion, comfort, cleaning, speaking, chewing, bolus quality, appearance, handling, prosthesis apart, and embarrassing, with no significant significance between two groups except satisfaction with surgical procedures and healing period. CONCLUSIONS Using two distally tilted zygomatic implants or all-on-four concept to rehabilitate atrophied maxilla by fixed detachable prosthesis could be considered a promising functional and esthetic treatment option regarding the patient satisfaction. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Traditionally, treatment of maxillary atrophied ridges was done by bone grafting or sinus-lifting techniques; however, using all-on-four concept or zygomatic implants was a successful treatment as it has high success rates and highly satisfied by the patients. Abstract
Introduction A recent study has demonstrated that social factors have an impact on the condition of dental implants. The present investigation investigated how varied alcohol intake quantities might alter the condition of dental implants and related peri-implant inflammation. Materials and Methods This retrospective research was piloted in a tertiary care center, and implants inserted between 2010 and 2022 were evaluated through a retrospective cohort analysis. Within 3 months following implant implantation, information on alcohol intake was gathered from the health maintenance records and employed as the predictor variable. The implant results as well as peri-implantitis were examined at follow-up visits. Using the logistic regression model, the Wald test analysis analyzed the statistical consequences of each parameter. The findings were translated using an odds ratio that was determined with a 95% confidence level. The data were generated and analyzed using descriptive statistics, with statistical significance defined as P < 0.05. Results At the time of implant placement, the enrolled patients were 59 ± 11.3 years old on average. The median time before peri-implantitis occurred was 31.3 ± 22.2 months. Within the first 2 years following implant implantation, the majority of people experienced peri-implantitis. The incidence of peri-implantitis was the lowest among light and moderate alcoholics (11.5%) and the highest among heavy alcoholics (46.2%). Moderate alcohol use was associated with a 79.1% decrease in peri-implantitis when compared to not drinking (P = 0.0365), whereas light alcohol consumption was connected to a 51.3% decrease (P = 0.026). The incidence of peri-implantitis among heavy drinkers was significantly significant (P = 0.0001). Conclusion According to the findings of the current retrospective cohort analysis, drinking alcohol at mild-to-moderate levels is connected to a reduction in the incidence rate of peri-implantitis compared to heavy drinkers. In contrast, high alcohol consumption was found to be associated with an increase in the prevalence of peri-implantitis among the participants who had dental implants.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The implant abutment connection interface has been considered one of the major factors affecting the outcome of implant therapy. However, drawbacks of traditional meta-analyses are the inability to compare more than 2 treatments at a time, which complicates the decision-making process for dental clinicians, and the lack of a network meta-analysis. PURPOSE The purpose of this network meta-analysis was to assess whether the implant abutment connection influences the outcome of implant-supported prostheses. MATERIAL AND METHODS An electronic search was undertaken to identify all randomized clinical trials comparing the effect of at least 2 different implant abutment connection designs published from 2009 up to May 2020. Outcome variables were implant survival rate, peri-implant marginal bone loss, and biologic and prosthetic complication rates at 12 months after prosthetic loading. Relevant information was extracted, and quality and risk of bias assessed. Pairwise meta-analyses and network meta-analyses based on a multivariate random-effects meta-regression were performed to assess the comparisons (α=.05 for all analyses). RESULTS For peri-implant marginal bone loss and prosthetic complications, conical interfaces were determined to be the most effective, with significant differences when compared with external hexagonal connections (P=.011 and P=.038, respectively). No significant differences were found among the implant abutment connections in terms of survival and biologic complications (P>.05 in all direct, indirect, and mixed comparisons). CONCLUSIONS After 1 year of loading, conical connections showed lower marginal bone loss and fewer prosthetic complications than external hexagonal connections. However, the implant abutment connection design had no influence on the implant survival and biologic complication rates.

Abstract
A dental implant mimics the tooth and restores its function. It has flourished as a replacement of missing natural teeth that has a success rate over 90% over the years. However, this root-form implant has also been associated with some complications after its application. Crestal bone loss, one of the biggest challenges in dental implant placement, occurs around the dental implant neck within a few months post-loading. The aim of this study was to determine survival rates and to measure crestal bone changes after placement of a single crown prosthesis. Data collection was done in a private dental university setting. Data from approximately 296 cases were retrieved after analyzing 86,000 case sheets. The following parameters were evaluated based on dental records: age, sex, implant placement area, implant diameter and length, and presence or absence of exudate. Crestal bone loss was assessed radiographically. Excel tabulation and SPSS version 23 were used for data analysis. Chi-square testing was done to correlate various parameters used in this study. Incipient crestal bone loss was commonly observed. It was seen that the association between crestal bone loss and exudate was statistically significant (Chi-square, p < 0.05). Within the limits of this study, incipient crestal bone loss was observed in most dental implants irrespective of bone density, implant length, implant diameter, and implant placement area.

Abstract
Tobacco smoking has been implicated in periodontal pathology through various mechanisms, including perturbations of the inflammatory and host responses to putative periodontal pathogens, alterations in the subgingival microbial communities, and a compromised healing potential of the tissues leading to imbalance of tissue homeostasis. This review provides the evidence for the relationship between cigarette smoking and periodontal disease in an attempt to explain possible mechanisms of how tobacco smoking may exert its negative effects on the periodontal tissues via systemic and localized pathways. Early and more recent studies explore cigarette smoking-induced changes in periodontal clinical indices; in subgingival microbial flora by employing traditional detection methods for selected microorganisms, in addition to modern techniques such as deep sequencing and bioinformatics analyses that are able to fully characterize the microbial communities; and in inflammatory and immune responses critically appraising study limitations and differences in study protocol designs. Periodontal treatment outcomes and implant therapy outcomes are reviewed in an attempt to shed light on possible mechanisms for the inferior treatment outcome noted in smokers. The potential harmful effects of passive smoking are also reviewed, providing evidence for the advantages of smoking cessation. Quitting cigarette smoking should be recommended by the dentist, and effort should be made to inform smokers about the negative effects of smoking on the periodontal status and implant therapy outcomes.

Abstract
Articles on the prevalence of peri-implant diseases showed that 90% of peri-implant tissues had some form of inflammatory response and a prevalence of peri-implantitis from 28% to 51% according to various publications. Objective: To provide an overview of how risk factors can be related with peri-implantitis. Methods: A retrospective longitudinal study including 555 implants placed in 132 patients was evaluated based on the presence of peri-implantitis following the criteria of Renvert et al. 2018. Results: In total, 21 patients (15.9%) suffered peri-implantitis (PPG) and 111 patients (84.1%) did not suffer peri-implantitis (NPG). The results reveal that smokers have a high incidence of peri-implantitis (72.7%) compared to non-smokers (27.3%) (p < 0.0005). Another variable with significant results (p < 0.01) was periodontitis: 50% PPG and 23.9% NPG suffered advanced periodontitis. Systemic diseases such as arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular diseases do not show a statistically significant influence on the incidence of peri-implantitis. Patients who did not attend their maintenance therapy appointment had an incidence of peri-implantitis of 61.4%, compared to 27.3% in those who attend (p < 0.0001). From the results obtained, we can conclude that relevant factors affect peri-implantitis, such as tobacco habits, moderate and severe periodontitis, and attendance in maintenance therapy.

Abstract
Genetic susceptibility has been reported to be an important risk factor for peri-implant disease (PID). The aim of this meta-analysis was to assess the association between TNF-α and IL-10 polymorphisms and PID susceptibility. The Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and PubMed/Medline databases were searched for studies published until 12 April 2021. RevMan 5.3, CMA 2.0, SPSS 22.0, and trial sequential analysis software were used. Twelve studies were included in our analysis. The pooled ORs for the association of TNF-α (−308 G > A), IL-10 (−1082 A > G), IL-10 (−819 C > T), and IL-10 (−592 A > C) polymorphisms were 1.12, 0.93, 1.35, and 0.77 for allelic; 1.42, 0.95, 3.41, and 0.34 for homozygous; 1.19, 1.88, 1.23, and 0.49 for heterozygous, 1.53, 1.12, 1.41, and 0.39 for recessive; and 1.16, 1.87, 2.65, and 0.75 for dominant models, respectively, with all the estimates being insignificant. The results showed an association between TNF-α (−308 G > A) polymorphism and the risk of PID in patients of Asian ethnicity (OR = 1.59; p = 0.03). The present meta-analysis illustrated that TNF-α (−308 G > A), IL-10 (−1082 A > G), IL-10 (−819 C > T), and IL-10 (−592 A > C) polymorphisms were not associated with the risk of PID, whereas TNF-α (−308 G > A) polymorphism was associated with an elevated risk of PID in Asian patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the influence of surgery start time (SST) and other patient- and therapy-related variables on the risk for early implant failure (EIF) in an academic setting. MATERIAL AND METHODS Data were extracted from the electronic health records of 61 patients who had at least one EIF and 140 age- and gender-matched, randomly selected, non-EIF controls. Bivariate and multivariable analyses were performed to identify relevant associations between EIF and different variables, such as SST. RESULTS Incidence of EIF was not significantly associated with SST (HR: 1.9 for afternoon implant placement, 95% CI: 0.9-3.9; p = .105). Other factors that were associated with a significantly increased risk for EIF in a multivariable model were pre-placement ridge augmentation (HR: 7.5, 95% CI: 2.2-25.1; p = .001), intra-operative complications (HR: 5.9, 95% CI: 2.2-16.3; p < .001), simultaneous soft tissue grafting (HR: 5.03, 95% CI: 1.3-19.5; p = .020), simultaneous bone grafting (HR: 3.7, 95% CI: 1.6-8.8; p = .002), and placement with sedation (HR: 3.4, 95% CI: 1.5-7.5; p = .002). CONCLUSIONS While SST was not associated with the occurrence of EIF in our cohort, other variables, such as ridge augmentation prior to implant placement, simultaneous bone or soft tissue grafting, intra-operative complications, implant placement with sedation, and number of implants in the oral cavity, were associated with an increased risk for this adverse event.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A cross-sectional study was designed to shed light on the clinical sequelae and patient satisfaction after dental implant removal (IR). METHODS Patients undergoing ≥1 IRs were eligible. The reasons for implant failure, clinical and radiological parameters before and after IR, and the surgical and prosthetic treatments offered after IR was assessed. Patient satisfaction was recorded and the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP)-14 was used to document patient self-reported dysfunction and discomfort attributed to IR. Lastly, patient expectations after IR were also evaluated. RESULTS Thirty-one patients with 45 implants were analyzed. Peri-implantitis was the main reason for IR (64.5%). The average implant survival time before IR was 120.3 ± 88.2 months. Signs of infection (51.7%) and bleeding on probing (37.5%) were common signs detected at the time of IR. Guided bone regeneration was the intervention most commonly applied simultaneously to IR (74.1%). The reported degree of satisfaction was high, and the overall OHIP-14 score was low. However, a certain patient reluctance to undergo future implant placement in the same clinic or with the same professional was recorded, and a statistically significant increase in adherence to the implant maintenance routine was observed after IR. CONCLUSIONS Peri-implantitis is the leading cause for IR. Guided bone regeneration is commonly applied to attenuate the clinical sequelae of IR. Nonetheless, IR does not seem to affect patients' satisfaction nor their quality of life, though a certain patient reluctance to undergo future implant placement in the same clinic or with the same professional was reported.

Abstract
Objectives The aim of this retrospective multicentre cohort study was to compare clinical outcomes, soft tissues conditions and differences in marginal bone loss between implants with a laser-microgrooved collar placed in posterior maxillary extraction sockets grafted by 4 to 5 months, and in posterior maxillary pristine bone (spontaneously healed posterior maxillary extraction sockets) by means of osteotome-mediated sinus floor elevation, over a period of 5 years after functional loading. Material and Methods Patients of Group 1 underwent extractions with sockets preservation using porcine-derived bone, covered with collagen membrane. Group 2 underwent extractions without socket preservation. Patients of Group 1 received implants in grafted sites, and Group 2 received implants in spontaneously healed bone using a maxillary sinus lift with crestal approach. Results Over the observation period, the overall clinical success rate in Group 1 and Group 2 was 98% and 100%, respectively, with no differences between the procedures and implants used. Cumulative radiographic marginal bone loss ranged from 0.03 to 0.39 mm after 60 months of functional loading. There were no statistically significant differences in marginal bone loss between short and standard-length implants placed in grafted extraction sockets and in pristine bone. Conclusions Short and standard implants with a laser-microgrooved collar, placed in posterior maxillary extraction sockets grafted by 4 to 5 months, and in posterior maxillary pristine bone (spontaneously healed posterior maxillary extraction sockets) by means of osteotome-mediated sinus floor elevation, exhibited no statistical difference in success rate, clinical parameters and marginal bone loss.

Abstract
Aim The aim of this prospective cohort study was to assess the effect of a pocket irrigator/evacuator device (IED) in the non‐surgical treatment of peri‐implantitis. Material and Methods In total 24 patients having 38 implants diagnosed with peri‐implantitis were included in this study. Peri‐implant pockets were irrigated six times in three consecutive weeks. The primary outcome was bleeding on probing (BoP). Secondary outcome parameters included plaque index (Pl), suppuration on probing (SoP), probing pocket depth (PPD), marginal bone loss (MBL), presence and numbers of periodontal pathogens. Parameters were assessed at baseline and 3 months after the last treatment. Treatment pain perception was scored using the visual analog scale (VAS) after the first and last treatment. Results At 3 months, IED treatment revealed significant reduction of peri‐implant BoP (71% [±20] vs 57% [±28] [P = .014]) and peri‐implant plaque scores (10 [±14] to 5 [±9] [P = .039] [T0 vs T3 respectively]). Significant reduction in mean peri‐implant PPD from 4.92 mm (SD ± 1.28) to 4.66 mm (SD ± 1.35) (P = .041) was observed. In addition, a reduction in VAS pain score between the first and the last (6th) treatment was found (P = .039). No reduction in SoP (P = .088) was found. No changes in mean periodontal full mouth plaque, BOP, SOP and PPD levels, MBL and microbiological outcomes were found. Conclusion Beneficial clinical effects in terms of BoP, PPD and PI were found at 3 months after IED treatment. However, the IED does not seem to effectively treat peri‐implantitis in terms of disease resolution.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To analyze a modified biphasic phycogenic biomaterial in comparison with anorganic bovine bone in maxillary sinus floor elevation in humans. MATERIAL AND METHODS Eight male patients in need of bilateral two-stage sinus floor elevation were consecutively recruited for this randomized split-mouth study. A combination of autogenous cortical bone (ACB, 20%) and anorganic bovine bone (ABB, 80%) (ACB + ABB group) or ACB (20%) and modified biphasic phycogenic material (BP, 80%) (ACB + BP group) were randomly assigned to graft each sinus. Patients were followed up for 6 months post-surgery when bone samples were collected for analysis. RESULTS Radiographically, bone height gain was statistically higher in the ACB + ABB versus the ACB + BP group. While the analysis of the biological compartments showed differences in non-mineralized tissue (39.15 ± 20.97% vs. 65.87 ± 28.59%, ACB + ABB vs. ACB + BP respectively; p = .018) and remnant biomaterial particles (22.62 ± 17.01% vs. 7.96 ± 8.57%, respectively; p = .028), the percentage of mineralized tissue (38.23 ± 17.55% vs. 24.14 ± 24.66%, respectively; p = .398) showed no statistically significant difference. In contrast, ACB + ABB biopsies showed higher Musashi-1-positive cells per mm2 compared to ACB + BP biopsies (811.49 ± 875.30 vs. 236.90 ± 280.81; p < .018), where the fusiform cells corresponded mainly with fibroblasts, as demonstrated by ultrastructural analysis. CONCLUSION Both combinations of materials exhibited bone formation after 6 months of healing in the maxillary sinus cavity. However, the combination with biphasic phycogenic biomaterial induced a higher radiographical vertical resorption and graft collapse in comparison with the combination with anorganic bovine bone, possibly due to a higher remodeling of the graft.

Abstract
Research objective - an assessment of morphological and element composition various as surfaces of implants, with the diagnosis periimplantitis, subjected to processing by the Er laser; Cr; YSGG wave of 2780 nanometers long in comparison with not subjected. Used implants of three producers: (1 - Nobel Biocare (Sweden), TiUnite surface; 2 - XIVE Dentsplay (Germany), SLA surface; 3 - BioHorizons (USA), RBM surface). Electronic and microscopic methods investigated surfaces of the control (new) implants removed with the diagnosis periimplantit, with the diagnosis periimplantit and processed by the laser. It is revealed that the surface of new sterile implants isn't ideal, on it there are traces of impregnation by inorganic connections, a large amount of foreign chemical elements, especially on a surface of SLA of an implant of XIVE Dentsplay is revealed. The surface of skilled implants with the diagnosis periimplantit is very strongly polluted by carbon (C), phosphorus (P), sulfur (S), silicon (Si), etc., being formed on a surface during an inflammation. After processing of the same surface by the Er laser; Cr; YSGG wave of 2780 nanometers long occurs surface clarification, and the element structure almost completely corresponds to the control.

Abstract
This systematic review aims to answer the following PICO (Participants, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome) question: “Does smoking increase the rates of implant failure and peri-implant marginal bone loss in patients with dental implants?” An extensive electronic search of the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PubMed, Medline, Embase, and Web of Science databases and a subsequent hand search were performed. Only randomized controlled trial, controlled clinical trials, and prospective studies published up to January 2017 were included. For dichotomous outcomes, the effect estimates for smoking are expressed as odds ratios and 95% CIs. For continuous outcomes, weighted mean differences (WMDs) and 95% CIs are presented. Three randomized controlled trials and 7 prospective studies were included. The odds ratio for implant failure among smokers was 2.92 (95% CI, 1.76–4.83) (P < .001). First-year marginal bone loss in smokers ranged from 0.02 to 0.45 mm. In the nonsmokers, bone loss ranged from −0.08 to 0.42 mm. Nonsmokers lost significantly less bone during the first year (WMD = 0.11 mm, 95% CI. 0.03–0.19) and subsequent years (WMD = 0.11 mm, 95% CI, 0.03–0.19, P = .009). The available scientific evidence suggests that smoking is associated with significantly increased rates of implant failure and marginal bone loss.

Abstract
Aim To compare implant survival rate and marginal bone loss (MBL) of immediately loaded single implants inserted by using ultrasonic implant site preparation (UISP) (test) and conventional rotary instrumentation (control). Methods Two single implants were inserted for each patient: after randomization, test site was prepared by using an ultrasonic device (Piezosurgery Touch, Mectron, Italy) and control site was prepared by using the drills of the selected implant system (Premium AZT, Sweden & Martina, Italy), until reaching a final diameter of 3 mm in both groups. Identical implants (3.8x11.5 mm) were inserted in all sites at crestal level. Impressions were taken and screwed resin single crowns with platform-switched provisional abutments were delivered with 48 hours. Periapical radiographs were taken at provisional crown insertion (T0), 6 months (T1) and one year (T2) after prosthetic loading to measure MBL. All data were tested for normality and subsequently analyzed by paired samples t-test and forward multiple linear regression. Results Forty-eight patients were treated in six centers with the insertion of ninety-six implants (48 test; 48 control). Four implants in four patients failed within the first six months of healing (two in test group; two in control group; no difference between groups). Forty patients (age 60.1±10.7 years; 22 female, 18 male) were included in the final analysis. Mean MBL after six months of loading was 1.39±1.03 mm in the test group and 1.42±1.16 mm in the control group (p>0.05) and after one year was 1.92±1.14 mm and 2.14±1.55 mm in test and control, respectively (p>0.05). Conclusions No differences in survival rate and MBL were demonstrated between UISP and conventional site preparation with rotary instruments in immediately loaded dental implants: UISP, with its characteristics of enhanced surgical control and safety in proximity of delicate structures, may be used as a reliable alternative to the traditional drilling systems.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Evaluate the peri-implant status on the long-term (1-9years) of patients treated with immediately-loaded full-arch prostheses in a private practice. METHODS A retrospective cohort study was carried out in patients consecutively treated with immediately loaded full-arch restorations supported with a minimum of 4 implants (Replace® Tapered, Nobel Biocare AB) and Multi-Unit conical abutments (MUA®, Nobel Biocare AB) with a follow-up of over 12months after placement of the final prosthesis. RESULTS A total of 378 implants were placed in 56 patients. Forty upper and 32 lower arches were restored, and 16 patients received bimaxillary rehabilitation. The mean duration of follow-up was 50 months, and the implant and patient peri-implantitis prevalences were 14.3% and 50%, respectively. Mucositis affected 56.9% of the implants and 50% of the patients. The survival rate was 96.4% by patient, but reached 99.5% in the implant-based analysis, and the success rate was 95.5% for implants and 80.4% for patients. CONCLUSIONS Immediately-loaded full-arch restorations have an acceptable outcome after 1-9years of follow-up. However, the incidence of peri-implant diseases is high, and further research is needed to confirm whether these may compromise the predictability of the prostheses over the long-term. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE After a mean follow-up of 50months, the incidence of mucositis and peri-implantitis affected the 96.4% and 50% of patients, respectively. However, these results were reduced almost by half when the threshold of bleeding on probing and peri-implant bone loss applied was less strict.

Abstract
Aim To describe a bimaxillary simultaneous immediate loading protocol with full-arch implant-supported fixed prostheses. Material and Methods A prospective case series of 8 patients who required full-arch rehabilitation was conducted. The main inclusion criteria were patients with teeth that required extraction. At least 1 molar per arch was temporarily employed to stabilize the surgical template and the provisional prosthesis during intraoral relining. Results Two upper implants failed in 1 patient. Structural fracture was registered in 3 patients, around 3 months after loading. All of them had bruxism. Three esthetic complications were registered: midline deviation, canting of the oclusal plane and color mismatch. Conclusions Although this protocol achieves optimal results, some mechanical complications were encountered. The fracture of the provisional prosthesis is a relatively common mechanical complication but does not seem to jeopardize the final treatment result. Abstract
PURPOSE Implant-supported overdentures are an alternative predictable rehabilitation method that has a high impact on improving the patient's quality of life. However, some biological complications may interfere with the maintenance and survival of these overdenture implants. The goal of this article was to assess the factors that affect peri-implant success, through a hypothetical prediction model for biological complications of implant overdentures. METHODS A retrospective observational, prevalence study was conducted in 58 edentulous Caucasian patients rehabilitated with implant overdentures. A total of 229 implants were included in the study. Anamnestic, clinical, and implant-related parameters were collected and recorded in a single database. "Patient" was chosen as the unit of analysis, and a complete screening protocol was established. The data analytical study included assessing the odds ratio, concerning the presence or absence of a particular risk factor, by using binary logistic regression modeling. Probability values (p values) inferior to 0.05 were considered as representing statistically significant evidence. RESULTS The performed prediction model included the following variables: mean probing depth, metal exposure, IL1B_allele2, maxillary edentulousness, and Fusobacterium nucleatum. The F. nucleatum showed significant association with the outcome. Introducing a negative coefficient appeared to prevent complications or even boost the biological defense when associated with other factors. CONCLUSIONS The prediction model developed in this study could serve as a basis for further improved models that would assist clinicians in the daily diagnosis and treatment planning practice of oral rehabilitation with implant overdentures.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the influences of height or area ratio of residual alveolar bone to graft material on marginal bone loss around implants in the augmented maxillary sinuses with delayed implant placement. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study, 42 patients with Astra implants in sinuses that had been augmented with alloplasts and allografts or xenografts (alveolar bone height ≤ 5 mm) were selected. Marginal bone level surrounding 1 implant per sinus was assessed by radiographic imaging at the time of final restoration delivery and 12 months after functional loading. To evaluate the marginal bone level alterations using clinical and radiographic data, Pearson's correlation analysis and Mann-Whitney test were performed. RESULTS Forty-six implants were included in this study. The residual bone/implant length ratio and the residual bone/implant area ratio were not associated with marginal bone loss at 1 year after functional loading (P > 0.05). And, marginal bone loss did not differ significantly between 2 types of graft materials during the observation period (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION The residual bone/implant length ratio and residual bone/implant area ratio were not associated with marginal bone loss around implants placed in augmented sinuses during 1 year of functional loading.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The transmucosal nature of dental implants presents a unique therapeutic challenge, requiring not only rapid establishment and subsequent maintenance of osseointegration, but also the formation of resilient soft tissue integration. Key challenges in achieving long-term success are sub-optimal bone integration in compromised bone conditions and impaired trans-mucosal tissue integration in the presence of a persistent oral microbial biofilm. These challenges can be targeted by employing a drug-releasing implant modification such as TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs), engineered on titanium surfaces via electrochemical anodization. Areas covered: This review focuses on applications of TNT-based dental implants towards achieving optimal therapeutic efficacy. Firstly, the functions of TNT implants will be explored in terms of their influence on osseointegration, soft tissue integration and immunomodulation. Secondly, the developmental challenges associated with such implants are reviewed including sterilization, stability and toxicity. Expert opinion: The potential of TNTs is yet to be fully explored in the context of the complex oral environment, including appropriate modulation of alveolar bone healing, immune-inflammatory processes, and soft tissue responses. Besides long-term in vivo assessment under masticatory loading conditions, investigating drug-release profiles in vivo and addressing various technical challenges are required to bridge the gap between research and clinical dentistry.

Abstract
PURPOSE This retrospective longitudinal study aims to assess long-term outcomes of osseointegrated dental implants in partially and totally edentulous patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients willing to sign the informed consent and attend a check-up were included. Implant failures were recorded, and marginal bone level and bone loss were evaluated on intraoral radiographs. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were conducted to determine the influence of various factors. Complications and patient satisfaction were recorded. RESULTS One hundred five patients who received 342 implants were included. Mean follow-up was 13.19 ± 3.70 years. 9.4% of implants were lost, and 78.1% of patients retained all implants placed. Mean marginal bone loss was 0.77 ± 1.10 mm, being greater than 3 mm in 2.5% of analyzed implants. Factors with possible influence on implant survival and marginal bone loss were smoking, osteopenia or osteoporosis, check-up frequency, implant surface, length and position, and type of prosthesis. 24.8% of patients remained free of complications. Patient satisfaction was high. CONCLUSIONS In our sample, which included both totally and partially edentulous patients, long-term implant survival was more than 90% with a mean marginal bone loss of 0.77 mm and an implant survival at patient level of 78%; patient satisfaction was high despite the fact that complications were frequent.

Abstract
Objectives The purpose of this paper was to systematically evaluate the effectiveness of non-surgical therapy for the treatment of peri-implant diseases including both, mucositis and peri-implantitis lesions. Material and Methods An electronic search in two different databases was performed including MEDLINE (PubMed) and EMBASE from 2011 to 2016. Human studies reporting non-surgical treatment of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis with more than 10 implants and at least 6 months follow up published in English language were evaluated. A systematic review was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the different methods of decontamination employed in the included investigations. Risk of bias assessment was elaborated for included investigations. Results Twenty-five articles were identified of which 14 were further evaluated and included in the analysis. Due to significant heterogeneity in between included studies, a meta-analysis could not be performed. Instead, a systematic descriptive review was performed. Included investigations reported the used of different methods for implant decontamination, including self-performed cleaning techniques, and professionally delivered treatment such as laser, photodynamic therapy, supra-/sub-mucosal mechanical debridement, and air-abrasive devices. Follow-up periods ranged from 6 to 60 months. Conclusions Non-surgical treatment for peri-implant mucositis seems to be effective while modest and not-predictable outcomes are expected for peri-implantitis lesions. Limitations include different peri-implant diseases definitions, treatment approaches, as well as different implant designs/surfaces and defect characteristics.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare the immediate implant success rates between sites with chronic apical lesions and healthy sites in the same patients 1 year postdelayed loading. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred sixty-eight immediate implants were placed in sixty patients at upper incisor, canine, and premolar sites. A split-mouth design was used, placing a minimum of two implants, one in a fresh socket associated with chronic periapical disease, the average lesion size was larger than 4 mm and less than 8 mm (test group), and the other(s) in a healthy fresh socket (control group). Implant survival rate at 1 year postloading delayed was compared between the groups. RESULTS The implant survival rate was 98.2% for the total sample (n = 168); out of the three implants lost, two were from the test group, and one was from the control group (in the same patient as one of the former). Among the surviving implants, five were also considered failures due to excessive bone loss (n = 3) and also because of the recurrence of the periapical lesions (n = 2). Survival rates were significantly lower in the test than control sites at 12 months postloading. CONCLUSIONS Implant survival rates were significantly lower after the immediate implantation in postextraction sockets associated with chronic periapical disease (90.8%) than in healthy postextraction sockets (98.1%).

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To test whether or not one of six implantoplasty procedures is superior to the others rendering a minimal final implant surface roughness and a short treatment time. MATERIAL AND METHODS Forty-two one-piece implants were embedded in epoxy resin blocks with 6-mm rough implant surface exposed. The following implantoplasty polishing sequences were applied: Brownie(®) , Greenie(®) sequence (BG) (diamond rotary instruments 106-, 40-, 15-μm grit, Brownie(®) , Greenie(®) silicone polishers); Arkansas stone sequence (AS) (diamond 106-, 40-, 15-μm grit, Arkansas stone torpedo-shaped bur); Short diamond sequence (SD) (diamond 106-, 40-, 4-μm grit); Short diamond sequence with Greenie(®) (SDG) (diamond 106-, 40-, 4-μm grit, Greenie(®) ); Complete diamond sequence (CD) (diamond 106-, 40-, 15-, 8-, 4-μm grit); Complete diamond sequence with Greenie(®) (CDG) (106-, 40-, 15-, 8-, 4-μm grit, Greenie(®) ). The polished neck portion served as a positive control, the untreated sandblasted and acid-etched surface as negative control. Each implant was scanned with a contact profilometer rendering Ra values and Rz values as a measure of surface roughness. The time needed to polish the implant surface for each group was recorded. Simultaneous comparisons between more than two groups were done performing Kruskal-Wallis tests. Comparisons between two groups were analysed using Wilcoxon rank-sum tests. RESULTS Mean Ra values amounted to 0.32 ± 0.14 μm (BG), 0.39 ± 0.13 μm (AS), 0.59 ± 0.19 μm (SDG), 0.71 ± 0.22 μm (SD), 0.75 ± 0.26 μm (CDG), 0.98 ± 0.30 μm (CD), 0.10 ± 0.01 μm (PC) and 1.94 ± 0.47 μm (NC). Pairwise one-sided comparisons between the test group revealed statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). The shortest treatment time was recorded for group AS (13 ± 2 min) and the longest for CDG (21 ± 2 min) and BG (21 ± 4 min). CONCLUSIONS Considering final surface roughness and treatment duration, the use of rotary diamond burs in decreasing roughness, followed by an arkansas stone (group AS), appears to be an optimal treatment option.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose was to radiographically analyze and compare the marginal bone loss (MBL) between implants with different mismatching distance and to study the influence of the prosthetic abutment height on the MBL in association with the related mismatching distances. MATERIAL AND METHODS This retrospective study included 108 patients in whom 228 implants were placed, 180 with diameter of 4.5 mm and 48 with diameter of 5 mm. All patients received OsseoSpeed™ implants with internal tapered conical connection (Denstply Implants). Different mismatching distances were obtained, given that all implants were loaded with the same uni-abutment type (Lilac; Denstply Implants). Data were gathered on age, gender, bone substratum, smoking habits, previous history of periodontitis, and prosthetic features. MBL was analyzed radiographically at 6 and 18 months post-loading. RESULTS Mixed linear analysis of mesial and distal MBL values yielded significant effects of abutment, implant diameter, follow-up period, bone substratum, smoking, and abutment × time interaction. MBL was greater at 18 vs. 6 months, for short vs. long abutments, for grafted vs. pristine bone, for a heavier smoking habit, and for implants with a diameter of 5.0 vs. 4.5 mm. CONCLUSION Greater mismatching does not minimize the MBL; abutment height, smoking habit, and bone substratum may play a role in the MBL over the short- and medium term.

Abstract
In this study, we analyzed the influence of prosthetic abutment height on marginal bone loss (MBL) around implants in the posterior maxilla. In this retrospective cohort study, the radiographically determined MBL was related to the height of the abutments of internal conical connection implants at 6 and 18 months post-loading. Data were gathered on age, sex, bone substratum, smoking habit, history of periodontitis, and prosthetic features, among other variables. A linear mixed model was used for statistical analysis. The study included 131 patients receiving 315 implants. MBL rates at 6 and 18 months were mainly affected by the abutment height but were also significantly influenced by the bone substratum, periodontitis, and smoking habit. MBL rates were higher for prosthetic abutment < 2 mm vs. ≥ 2 mm, for periodontal vs. non-periodontal patients, for grafted vs. pristine bone, and for a heavier smoking habit. The abutment height is a key factor in MBL. MBL rates followed a non-linear trend, with a greater MBL rate during the first 6 months post-loading than during the next 12 months.

Abstract
The negative effects of chronic and excessive consumption of alcohol on bone metabolism are reported in the literature. Alcoholism causes a reduction in bone quality and delays fracture repair, among other deleterious effects. However, its effect on osseointegration in dental implants is not fully established. The aim of this research was to investigate the influence of prolonged and excessive consumption of alcohol on osseointegration in rats. Thirty-five female rats, 3 months of age, were divided into five groups according to alcohol consumption period: control (no alcohol), and 3, 4, 5, and 6 months of alcohol consumption. All animals received solid food ad libitum. At 8 months of age, all animals received a dental implant in the right femur, and euthanasia was performed 1 month after the implant placement (final n = 27). Quantification of the percentage of bone-implant direct contact was performed by histomorphometry. Serum levels of calcium and phosphate were also measured. The groups that consumed alcohol for longer periods presented decreased percentages of bone-implant direct contact. The difference was higher in implants apical region. Alcohol consumption did not affect serum calcium levels but raised the level of serum phosphate. Alcohol consumption increased caloric intake but also increased weight loss. It was concluded that chronic and excessive consumption of alcohol can impair osseointegration in rats.
