Prognosis and sequelae of meth(acrylate) sensitization in beauticians and consumers of manicure materials

BACKGROUND

Allergic contact dermatitis from (meth)acrylic monomers (ACDMA) in manicure products is increasing.

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the prognosis, work performance impairment and sequelae of a cohort of beauticians and manicure consumers with ACDMA sensitized from the exposure to manicure products.

METHODS

We conducted a telephone survey with patients diagnosed with ACDMA.

RESULTS

One hundred and six patients were evaluated, including 75 (70.8%) beauticians and 31 (29.2%) consumers. All were women with a mean age of 39 (19-62). Thirty-seven of 75 beauticians (49.3%) continued to work. Twenty-seven of 106 (25.5%) patients continued to use manicure products with (meth)acrylates regularly. Seventeen of 51 (33.3%) patients who discontinued the exposure described ongoing nail/periungual changes. Nine of 58 (15.5%) patients who required dental restoration, orthodontic or occlusal splint materials recalled reactions from them; and, 25 of 96 (26%) who used sanitary napkins recalled intolerance to them starting after the diagnosis of ACDMA. Fifteen of 25 (60%) discontinued the use of sanitary napkins.

CONCLUSION

49.3% beauticians continued to work; most patients stopped wearing acrylic manicure materials; reactions from dental materials were not uncommon, however, removal of dental materials was never required; and, reactions to sanitary napkins developing after the diagnosis of ACDMA were common most leading to discontinuation of use.

Formaldehyde Release From Eyelash Glues: Analysis Using the Chromotropic Acid Method

BACKGROUND

Popularity of eyelash enhancements has increased dramatically. Eyelash enhancements are available as an over-the-counter consumer product with glue included and as a professional product where proprietary glues are typically used. Both types of eyelash extension glues may release formaldehyde despite not being declared as an ingredient. Although formaldehyde is a carcinogen and may cause allergic contact dermatitis, few studies have assessed its presence in eyelash glues.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of the study was to evaluate professional and consumer eyelash glues for the presence of formaldehyde using the chromotropic acid method (CAM).

METHODS

A total of 37 eyelash glues were evaluated: 17 consumer eyelash glues (2 of which declared formaldehyde) and 20 professional eyelash glues (none of which declared formaldehyde) were purchased and analyzed with the CAM of testing.

RESULTS

For consumer eyelash glues, the 2 glues that declared formaldehyde were positive on CAM testing as well as 2 glues (13.3% [2/15]) that did not declare formaldehyde. Of the 20 professional eyelash glues, 15 (75.0%) were positive for formaldehyde.

CONCLUSIONS

Some consumer eyelash glues and most professional eyelash glues released formaldehyde when evaluated with CAM. Patients and clinicians should be aware that both consumer and professional eyelash glues can be sources of formaldehyde.

Patch Testing Ingredients of Dermabond and Other Cyanoacrylate-Containing Adhesives

BACKGROUND

Cyanoacrylates are strong adhesives used for a variety of medical, industrial, and cosmetic applications and have been implicated as a cause of allergic contact dermatitis.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of the study was to review our experience in patch testing with cyanoacrylates.

METHODS

We reviewed patch test results of 38 patients with a clinical history of contact dermatitis due to a cyanoacrylate-containing adhesive (mostly Dermabond). Testing used cyanoacrylates of >99% purity diluted to 10% to 30% in petrolatum (pet.), undiluted octyl cyanoacrylate, and/or Dermabond Mini or Advanced "as is." Patch tests were also performed with methacrylates, formaldehyde (a cyanoacrylate impurity), benzalkonium chloride, and cyanoacrylate polymerization inhibitors. Three patients were also tested with Dermabond Mini on abraded skin.

RESULTS

Commercial cyanoacrylate patch testing material (ethyl cyanoacrylate 10% pet.) detected 29% of Dermabond-allergic patients, whereas patch testing with octyl cyanoacrylate 10% pet. increased detection to 50%. Testing with higher concentrations and/or on abraded skin further increased yield. Thirteen (37%) of our 35 cyanoacrylate-allergic patients were also allergic to methacrylates or acrylates.

CONCLUSIONS

Octyl cyanoacrylate is the usual allergenic ingredient in Dermabond. Patch testing with high concentrations is often required. Testing Dermabond on abraded skin further improves diagnostic sensitivity by more closely simulating clinical use.

Manufacturing Process Changes and Reduced Skin Irritations of an Adhesive Patch Used for Continuous Glucose Monitoring Devices

Adhesives used for continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices can cause skin irritations, which sometimes lead to abandonment of the therapy. A previous sensor manufacturing process involved two separate adhesives-one applied to the skin-facing surface of the fabric patch, and a second, ethyl cyanoacrylate-based adhesive, which secured the plastic transmitter housing to the superficial side of the patch. Our current process for attaching the transmitter housing to the fabric patch uses heatstaking, wherein the housing is heated and pressed against the patch with a specialized assembly apparatus. Heatstaking simplifies the sensor assembly process and obviates the need for the second adhesive, which may lead to lower risk of skin irritation(s) in some patients.

[Serious adverse events after microbial sealant application in paediatric patients]

BACKGROUND

Integuseal(®) is a cyanoacrylate-based medical device (IIa class), used in surgery after skin preparation to reduce bacterial contamination. It is not officially contraindicated for children.

OBJECTIVES

To describe a case series of skin lesions in pediatric patients after using Integuseal(®) in cardiac surgery.

METHODS

Case series.

RESULTS

Between September 2012 and February 2013, 153 pediatric patients were treated by Integuseal(®) to prepare for a cardiac surgery in our center: 5 patients (2%) had serious cutaneous reactions. The average age of patients having had lesions is 16months (the youngest patient being 1month old and the oldest being 5years and 8months old).

ISSUES

The risk factor in the development of skin lesion seems to be particularly related to the patient's age and sternal location. Other medical literature reports instances of cyanoacrylate intolerance in a variety of other situations.

CONCLUSION

Using Integuseal(®) on children does not appear to be safe.
