Abstract
Background Dentigerous cysts (DC) form due to fluid accumulation between the crown of the tooth and the reduced enamel epithelium. Due to the diverse clinical characteristics, such as ambiguity concerning their biological origins and the significance of timely diagnosis and detection of these lesions, researchers are presently motivated to undertake further investigations. The aim of the present study was to assess the amount of serum alpha-tocopherol in patients with DC and compare it with that of normal, healthy individuals. Methods A total sample size of n=34 was included in the current study. Group A, designated as the control group, comprised 17 randomly selected healthy subjects, while Group B, the DC diagnostic group, consisted of 17 patients. Blood samples were collected, and the concentration of vitamin E or alpha-tocopherol was evaluated and expressed in mg/mL. Results Compared to the mean vitamin E level in healthy controls (12.08 ± 1.92 mg/mL), patients with DC showed a statistically significant (p<0.0001) reduction in mean vitamin E levels (5.29 ± 1.01 mg/mL). Conclusion Patients with DC have lower levels of vitamin E than healthy individuals. The reduced concentration of vitamin E can have a role in the extension of cystic volume and thus have an impact on the aggressiveness of pathologic lesions. The therapeutic benefits of vitamin E supplementation in reducing the aggressiveness of DC should be evaluated in future research.

Abstract
(1) Background: The present study was carried out to evaluate the roles of proliferation and angiogenesis in locally aggressive biologic behavior of ameloblastoma versus ameloblastic fibroma; (2) Methods: 30 formalin-fixed paraffin embedded blocks (15 cases of ameloblastoma and 15 cases of ameloblastic fibroma) were used. To evaluate the proliferation, the tissue sections were stained with an AgNORs stain. CD105 was used as an immunohistochemical marker of angiogenesis. Quantitative evaluations of AgNORs were performed. The mean vascular density was evaluated as a measure for CD105 protein expression by using image analyzer computer system; (3) Results: The mean number of AgNORs dots per nucleus was significantly higher in ameloblastoma as compared to ameloblastic fibroma. Additionally, the protein level of CD105 showed positive expression and wide distribution that the mean vascular density was significantly higher in ameloblastoma as compared to ameloblastic fibroma; (4) Conclusion: Quantitative evaluation of the AgNORs stain and the mean vascular density utilizing CD105 protein expression may reflect a higher proliferative activity and a more locally aggressive biologic behavior of ameloblastoma when compared to ameloblastic fibroma, indicating that other factors may be involved in biologic behavior of ameloblastic fibroma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate angiogenesis in central giant cell lesions (CGCL) and its association with biological behavior. In addition, investigation of the histone H3.3 mutation was performed. DESIGN Thirty-eight cases of CGCL were classified as aggressive (n = 9) or nonaggressive (n = 29). Cases were submitted to immunohistochemistry to compare angiogenesis using Wilms' tumor protein 1 (WT1), platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule (CD31) and endoglin (CD105) between groups. To verify the presence of genic mutation, histone H3.3 was investigated. RESULTS WT1 was expressed in mononuclear and giant cells of all cases. CD31 and CD105 were expressed in CGCL microvessels, with a higher CD105 microvascular density than CD31. No statistically significant difference was observed between groups. None of the cases studied showed the histone mutation. CONCLUSIONS There was no difference between aggressive and nonaggressive lesions regarding the angiogenic markers. The expression of WT1 and CD105 suggests that CGCL presents a tumoral vascular pattern with high neoangiogenic activity. The absence of histone mutation may indicate that CGCL is not a true giant cell tumor.

Abstract
Soft tissue sarcomas are a large group of different tumor types both in humans and in animals. Among them, fibrosarcoma is the most frequent malignant mesenchymal tumoral form in cats, representing up to 28% of all cat skin tumors, while human fibrosarcoma, fortunately, only represents 5% of all sarcomas and 0.025% of the world-wide burden of tumors. This low incidence in humans leads to consideration of this group of tumoral diseases as rare, so therapeutic options are few due to the difficulty of starting clinical trials. In this context, the identification of research models for fibrosarcomas could be of great interest to deepen knowledge in this field and recognize new or possible biological pathways involved in tumor progression and metastasis. Angiogenesis is considered a fundamental scattering cause of tumor aggressiveness and progression in all forms of cancer, but only a few research parameters were developed and reported to express them quantitatively and qualitatively. The role in angiogenesis of microenvironmental stromal cells, such as fibroblasts, lymphocytes, mast cells, and macrophages, was largely demonstrated since this topic was first approached, while quantification of new vessels and their blood capacity in tumoral area is a relatively recent approach that could be well developed thanks to expertise in immunohistochemistry and image analysis. In this paper, a crossing study evaluating microvascular density (MVD), endothelial area (EA), and Ki-67 proliferative index was reported for a series of formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded tissue samples from 99 cat patients, affected by cat post-injection fibrosarcoma, by using a till ×400 magnification light microscopy. We aim to demonstrate that cat pets may be considered a useful animal model for better studying the correspondent human diseases and we report, for the first time to our knowledge, experimental data in terms of correlation among MVD, EA, and Ki-67 strictly involved in aggressiveness and tumoral progression.

Abstract
Background: Angiogenesis is critical for tumor growth and reflects the aggressive behavior of invasive odontogenic lesions [like amelogenesis (AM) (AM), Odontogenic Keratocyst (OKC) and Central giant cell lesion (CGCL)]. Mean vascular density (MVD) shows the angiogenic potential and CD105 is an ideal endothelial biomarker due to its specificity to new blood vessels for MVD detection. The aim of the study was to compare the MVD (angiogenic potential) among AM, OKC and CGCL in comparison to Pyogenic Granuloma (PG) using CD105 biomarker. Methods: Sixty-four primary cases of odontogenic invasive tumors (AM, OKC and CGCL) and PG, diagnosed clinically and histologically were included in the study, with 16 samples in each group. Tissue samples of peripheral AM, Peripheral GCL of jaws, malignant AM, and specimen with insufficient tissue were excluded. Tissue sections were embedded, processed and stained using Hematoxylin and Eosin (H and E). Immunohistochemistry was performed using antibodies against CD105, with positive brown cytoplasmic staining in the endothelial cells of neo-vasculature. Distinct countable, positively stained endothelial cell or clusters were evaluated under light microscope for identification of MVD. ANOVA and t-test were applied for statistical analysis of data. Results: Highest MVD was displayed in CGCL (32.99±0.77) and the minimum was observed in OKC (7.21± 0.75) respectively. CGCL showed significantly higher MVD to AM, OKC and PG lesions (p<0.05). AM (8.07± 0.36) and Odontogenic Keratocyst (7.21± 0.75) showed comparable MVD, which was lower than PG (14.7± 0.96) and CGCL vascular density (p < 0.01) respectively. Conclusion: CGCL was most aggressive, with highest MVD among the investigated odontogenic lesions (OKC, AM and PG). The proliferative aggressive behavior of Odontogenic Keratocyst is comparable to AM due to comparable mean vascular density.

Abstract
Evaluation and comparison of odontogenic keratocysts and detigerous cysts immunoexpression and immunostaining intensities of Ki-67 antigen by assessing the whole extent of the epithelium (all epithelium layers in combination) and each layer individually. Ki-67 immunoexpression was evaluated in 15 odontogenic keratocysts and 6 dentigerous cysts using automated methods and the Aperio Technologies Inc. computer system. No statistically significant differences were observed in immunoexpression nor in immunostaining intensities between both lesions. Also, no statistically significant differences were found between odontogenic keratocysts from maxilla versus mandible nor primary versus recurrent. However, odontogenic keratocyst showed a significantly higher cellular proliferation index in the suprabasal layers compared to the basal layer. Assessment of the cellular proliferation index through a computerized system enabled the evaluation of all epithelial tissue without field selection. The increased Ki-67 immunoexpression in suprabasal layers of odontogenic keratocyst suggests a different biological behavior and more aggressive proliferation potential when compared to dentigerous cyst. The same result was found in recurrent odontogenic keratocysts when compared with primary ones. The odontogenic keratocysts of the maxilla and mandible have similar Ki-67 immunoexpression. The evaluation of cellular proliferation only by immunohistochemical analysis with Ki-67 antigen does not provide enough data to elucidate the biological behavior of odontogenic keratocyst.

Abstract
Background Limited statistically and clinically significant studies have been down on connective tissue factors in the odontogenic tumors. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the biological behavior of two selected epithelial odontogenic tumors (Ameloblastoma and Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor) by detecting CD34, VEGFR3 and eosinophil densities. Methods In this cross-sectional study, paraffin blocks including 20 cases of ameloblastoma and 20 (AOT), were selected. Totally, 4 sections were prepared for hematoxylin-eosin, Congo red staining, immunohistochemistry with CD34 and VEGFR3. Expression of VEGFR3, CD34 and lymphatic, blood vessels and eosinophil densities was examined. Results The mean of blood, lymphatic vessels and eosinophils densities in ameloblastoma were 14.9 ± 6.4, 4.4 ± 2 and 3.2 ± 2.7, respectively; and in AOT, they were 8.9 ± 3.4, 3.6 ± 1.3 and 1.2 ± 07, respectively. There was a significant difference in eosinophils and blood vessels densities between the two lesions (p = 0.005; p = 0.003). By increasing the density of eosinophils, the density of the blood vessels increased in both lesions (r = 0.539, P = 0.001) There was no positive relationship between eosinophils and lymphatic vessels densities in the two above mentioned odontogenic lesions (p = 0.288, R = 0.191). Conclusion It can be suggested that tumor angiogenesis and eosinophil densities may play a more effective role than lymphangiogenesis in local invasive behavior of ameloblastoma rather than AOT.

Abstract
Fibronectin (FN) is a main component of extracellular matrix (ECM) in most adult tissues. Under pathological conditions, particularly inflammation, wound healing and tumors, an alternatively spliced exon extra domain A (EDA) is included in the FN protein (EDA+FN), which facilitates cellular proliferation, motility, and aggressiveness in different lesions. In this study we investigated the effects of EDA+FN on bone destruction in human radicular cysts and explored the possibility of editing FN gene or blocking the related paracrine signaling pathway to inhibit the osteoclastogenesis. The specimens of radicular cysts were obtained from 20 patients. We showed that the vessel density was positively associated with both the lesion size (R = 0.49, P = 0.001) and EDA+FN staining (R = 0.26, P = 0.022) in the specimens. We isolated fibroblasts from surgical specimens, and used the CRISPR/Cas system to knockout the EDA exon, or used IST-9 antibody and bevacizumab to block EDA+FN and VEGF, respectively. Compared to control fibroblasts, the fibroblasts from radicular cysts exhibited significantly more Trap+MNCs, the relative expression level of VEGF was positively associated with both the ratio of EDA+FN/total FN (R = 0.271, P = 0.019) and with the number of Trap+MNCs (R = 0.331, P = 0.008). The knockout of the EDA exon significantly decreased VEGF expression in the fibroblasts derived from radicular cysts, leading to significantly decreased osteoclastogenesis; similar results were observed using bevacizumab to block VEGF, but block of EDA+FN with IST-9 antibody had no effect. Furthermore, the inhibitory effects of gene editing on Trap+MNC development were restored by exogenous VEGF. These results suggest that EDA+FN facilitates osteoclastogenesis in the fibrous capsule of radicular cysts, through a mechanism mediated by VEGF via an autocrine effect on the fibroblasts. Bevacizumab inhibits osteoclastogenesis in radicular cysts as effectively as the exclusion of the EDA exon by gene editing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ameloblastoma is a benign but locally aggressive odontogenic tumor, while ameloblastic carcinoma is its malignant counterpart. Angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis in malignancies have been correlated with higher aggressiveness and poor prognosis, as well as greater expression of podoplanin by tumoral cells. METHODS Immunohistochemical expression of podoplanin, CD34, and CD105 (endoglin) was evaluated in 53 ameloblastomas and three ameloblastic carcinomas; additionally, immunohistochemistry for podoplanin was also performed in 10 tooth germs. Microvessel density of blood and lymphatic vessels was calculated and compared between ameloblastomas and ameloblastic carcinomas. Immunoexpression of podoplanin by ameloblastic cells was evaluated in tooth germs, ameloblastomas, and ameloblastic carcinomas. RESULTS Podoplanin was similarly expressed by odontogenic epithelial cells of tooth germs and ameloblastomas, while its expression was lower in ameloblastic carcinomas. There was no difference in microvessel density assessed by CD34 between ameloblastomas and ameloblastic carcinomas; nevertheless, the latter presented higher amounts of lymphatic and new formed blood vessels. CONCLUSIONS Results suggest that podoplanin does not seem to be involved in invasion mechanisms of ameloblastic carcinomas, as its expression was decreased in the malignant tumoral cells. On the other hand, the increased lymphatic microvessel density and neoangiogenesis found in ameloblastic carcinomas could be related to its aggressiveness and potential for metastasis.

Abstract
Background Keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOTSs) are odontogenic tumors previously referred to as odontogenic keratocysts. Several studies have reported that KCOT behavior is more like that of a benign neoplasm than a cyst. KCOTs are locally destructive and exhibit a high recurrence rate. The objective of this study is to characterize the expression of p53, p63 and p73 in KCOTs together with the relationship between their expression and KCOT angiogenesis and recurrence. Material and Methods Standard indirect immunohistochemistry using monoclonal antibodies specific to human p53, p63, p73 and CD105 was performed in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue sections of 39 KCOT samples. Grading of p53, p63 and p73 immunohistochemical staining was divided into three groups, whereas microvessel density (MVD) was presented as the mean +/- standard deviation. Associations between p53, p63 and p73 expression and clinical-pathological parameters were analyzed by Fisher’s exact test, whereas associations among MVD levels, clinical and pathological parameters and p53, p63 and p73 expression were analyzed by the Mann-Whitney U test. Correlations among p53, p63, p73 and MVD levels were analyzed using Spearman’s correlation coefficients. For all analyses, p< 0.05 was considered to indicate statistical significance. Results p53, p63 and p73 expression was noted in 23, 32 and 26 of 39 KCOT cases, respectively. The mean MVD was 26.7 ± 15.8 per high-power field. In addition, correlations between the expression levels of p53, p63, p73 and MVD in KCOT were examined. Statistically significant positive relationships were noted for all proteins (p<0.001). Conclusions Three members of the p53 protein family are expressed in KCOTs, and their expression relates to angiogenesis in these tumors. Abstract
Aim Odontogenic myxoma is a benign intraosseous neoplasm of the jaws, with a locally aggressive behavior and a high recurrence rate. CD-105 is a homodimeric cell membrane glycoprotein and is a component of the TGF-β1 growth factor receptor complex that modulates angiogenesis by regulating the proliferation, differentiation and cellular migration. The aim of this study is to quantify the microvascular density of the odontogenic myxoma based on the expression of CD-105. Materials and Methods The analysis included 18 odontogenic myxoma and 18 dental follicles as controls. A standard immunohistochemical procedure was performed with the CD-105 antibody. Five representative fields (40×) of the odontogenic myxoma and the dental follicles were selected to determine the microvascular density, which was then followed by a descriptive and comparative statistical analysis. Results Dental follicles presented a significantly higher microvascular density compared with odontogenic myxoma (P = .001). The odontogenic myxoma smaller than 3 cm showed a greater microvascular density than those larger than 3 cm in size (P > .05), and the microvascular density was lower in large odontogenic myxomas as compared with the dental follicles (P = .003). Conclusion A weaker expression of CD-105 in odontogenic myxoma might indicate a lower angiogenic activity, suggesting that vascular proliferation has a limited role in the growth mechanisms and in the aggressive behavior of this neoplasm.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the presence of M2-polarized macrophages and their relationships to angiogenesis in keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT). M2-polarized macrophages were detected in KCOT samples by immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence. Meanwhile, microvessel density measured with antibody against CD31 was closely correlated with the presence of M2-polarized macrophages. In addition, macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) significantly contributed to the activation of M2-polarized macrophages. Moreover, the results of in vitro wound healing, cell migration and tube formation assays further revealed the pro-angiogenic function of M2-polarized macrophage-like cells. This function might be associated with secretion of angiogenic cytokines, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) and matrix metalloprotein-9 (MMP-9). This study demonstrates for the first time that M2-polarized macrophages are prevalent in KCOT, and their presence is dependent on M-CSF expression. More importantly, these tumor-supportive cells can also promote tumor angiogenesis by secreting angiogenic cytokines.

Abstract
Keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOTs) are cystic epithelial neoplasms with a high recurrence rate. The molecular mechanisms underlying the initiation and progression of KCOTs are still largely unknown. Previous research showed that specific ablation of Smad4 in odontoblasts and dental epithelia resulted in spontaneous KCOTs in mice, and that constitutively activated Hedgehog (Hh) signaling was detected in the cyst epithelia of both Smad4(Co/Co) OC-Cre and Smad4(Co/Co) K5-Cre mice. Here, we ablated Smad4 in mouse odontoblasts and dental epithelia and compared the sizes and numbers of KCOTs. Both the number and size of KCOTs in Smad4(Co/Co) OC-Cre mice were larger than those in Smad4(Co/Co) K5-Cre mice, suggesting that paracrine signals from root odontoblasts play a more important role than those from Hertwig's epithelial root sheath (HERS) cells.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to explore the association of menstrual and reproductive factors with thyroid nodules in Chinese women older than 40 years of age. A questionnaire was completed by 6,571 women aged 40 years or older in a community-based epidemiological investigation of thyroid nodules conducted from June to November 2011 in Nanjing City. Thyroid nodules were measured by ultrasound. The Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System score was used to differentiate between benign and possibly malignant nodules. Menopausal age (>55 vs. <50 years: RR = 1.17, 95 % CI 1.00-1.34) and number of reproductive years (>40 vs. <35 years: RR = 1.12, 95 % CI 1.01-1.24) increased the risk of thyroid nodules, but were not associated with suspected malignant nodules. Women who experienced more pregnancies (≥5 vs. ≤1: RR = 2.09, 95 % CI 1.79-2.40) and abortions (≥3 vs. 0: RR = 1.61, 95 % CI 1.41-1.81) were prone to development of thyroid nodules, and more likely to form suspected malignant nodules (pregnancies, RR = 3.59, 95 % CI 1.60-7.20; abortions, RR = 2.36, 95 % CI 1.31-4.06). Furthermore, higher risks of thyroid nodules (RR = 1.36, 95 % CI 1.14-1.59) and suspected malignant nodules (RR = 2.80, 95 % CI 1.08-6.53) were observed in women who had undergone artificial compared with natural abortion. Periods of elevated estrogen and progesterone levels in women, such as pregnancy, were the key occasions for occurrence of both benign and suspiciously malignant thyroid nodules, while longer lifetime length of exposure to female sex hormones might promote the growth of thyroid nodules.

Abstract
Central giant cell lesion (CGCL) and peripheral giant cell lesion (PGCL) are
non-neoplastic proliferative processes of the jaws. PGCL is a reactive process
induced by irritant local factors and CGCL is an intra-osseous lesion of unknown
etiology. Both lesions exhibit similar histologic features showing abundant
mononuclear cells, admixed with a large number of multinucleated giant cells and a
rich vascularized stroma with extravasated erythrocytes, hemosiderin deposition, and
blood-filled pools. Recent studies have linked fatty acid synthase (FASN) with
angiogenesis.

Abstract
Keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOT) are benign, locally aggressive intraosseous tumors of odontogenic origin. KCOT have a higher stromal microvessel density (MVD) than dentigerous cysts (DC) and normal oral mucosa. To identify genes in the stroma of KCOT involved in tumor development and progression, RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) was performed using samples from KCOT and primary stromal fibroblasts isolated from gingival tissues. Seven candidate genes that possess a function potentially related to KCOT progression were selected and their expression levels were confirmed by quantitative PCR, immunohistochemistry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Expression of lysyl oxidase-like 4 (LOXL4), the only candidate gene that encodes a secreted protein, was enhanced at both the mRNA and protein levels in KCOT stromal tissues and primary KCOT stromal fibroblasts compared to control tissues and primary fibroblasts (P<0.05). In vitro, high expression of LOXL4 could enhance proliferation and migration of the human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). There was a significant, positive correlation between LOXL4 protein expression and MVD in stroma of KCOT and control tissues (r=0.882). These data suggest that abnormal expression of LOXL4 of KCOT may enhance angiogenesis in KCOT, which may help to promote the locally aggressive biological behavior of KCOT.

Abstract
Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of inflammation in angiogenesis of keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT).
Study Design: Twenty inflamed and 20 non-inflamed KCOTs were selected based on quantitative scoring of inflammation which was also applied on 20 radicular cysts. Microvessel density was assessed in all samples using CD34 antibody and angiogenesis was compared between the three groups. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way analysis of variance followed by post-hoc Scheffe test and P values less than 0.05 were considered significant.
Results: A statistically significant difference in angiogenesis was found between radicular cysts and both inflamed and non-inflamed KCOTs (P < 0.001), but not between inflamed and non-inflamed KCOTs (P =0.347).
Conclusion: Based on the results obtained in the present study, it seems that the effect of inflammation on angiogenesis in KCOT is minimal. However further investigation using other methods of evaluation is suggested to fully clarify the role of “inflammatory angiogenesis” in this neoplasm.

Abstract
Three hundred and twenty-two patients (192 male and 130 female) with cystic lesions of the jaw were successfully diagnosed and treated. One hundred and fifty-five (48%) were radicular cysts, 80 (25%) were dentigerous cysts, 23 (7%) were odontogenic keratocyst (=keratocystic odontogenic tumor), 19 (6%) were eruption cysts, 16 (5%) were traumatic bone cysts, and 29 (9%) were non-odontogenic cysts. There were 95 in the pediatric age group (1 month to 16 years) and 227 in the adult age group (17 years and older). Male to female ratio was 1 in the pediatric age group and 1.7 in the adult age group. The treatment modalities were: marsupialization, enucleation, enucleation with bone grafting, or resection. The distribution and characteristics of jaw cysts in children are different from those in adults. In children there is a relatively high rate of developmental cysts, whereas in adults the inflammatory cysts are more common. Following enucleation of a cystic jaw lesion, the entire surgical specimen and not only a biopsy specimen, should be examined histopathologically to prevent any possibility of an intramural squamous cell carcinoma that may be overlooked. The differences in prevalence of each type of jaw cyst during a lifetime may point toward a multifactorial polygenic pattern rather than a monogenic pattern.

Abstract
The pathogenesis of cysts that arise in the jaws is still not certain, and the underlying mechanisms of epithelial proliferation are not fully understood. Cysts of the jaw may involve a reactive, inflammatory, or neoplastic process. Cytogenetics, the study of the number and structure of chromosomes, has provided valuable information about the diagnosis, prognosis, and targeted treatment in many cancers, including oral squamous cell carcinoma. Cytogenetics can also provide information about the possible aetiology or neoplastic potential of a lesion, though to our knowledge no studies of this technique have been used for cysts in the jaws. In this pilot study we used cytogenetics in a series of 10 cysts (3 radicular, 4 dentigerous, 2 of the nasopalatine duct, and 1 dermoid). In all cases we found normal karyotypes. Further work and larger numbers are needed for a definitive study, but we can hypothesise from this pilot study that these cysts do not have cytogenetic aberrations and so have no neoplastic potential.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the immunohistochemical expression of syndecan-1 (CD138) and Ki-67 in radicular cysts (RC), dentigerous cysts (DC) and keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KOT). Thirty-five RC, 22 DC and 17 KOT were used in the study and immunohistochemical reactions using anti-syndecan-1 and anti-Ki-67 antibodies were performed by the streptavidin-biotin-peroxidase method. Fisher's exact test and Spearman's correlation coefficient were used for statistical analysis of data. Among the studied lesions, no differences in the syndecan-1 expression were observed, but the suprabasal expression of Ki-67 was significantly higher in KOT (p<0.0001), when compared with RC and DC. In RC, there was positive correlation between the expression (p=0.02) and intensity (p=0.0001) of syndecan-1 and between the intensity of syndecan-1 and Ki-67 expression (p=0.01). In the KOT, Ki-67 expression in the suprabasal layer correlated positively with the expression (p=0.01) and intensity (p=0.01) of syndecan-1. The expression of syndecan-1 does not seem to be a determinant factor of the distinct histopathological features and biological behavior of the studied lesions. Nevertheless, positive correlation between syndecan-1 and a cell proliferation marker was observed in RC and KOT.
