Abstract
Nowadays, poisoning with metal phosphides, especially aluminum phosphide (ALP), is one of the main health threats in human societies. Patients suffer from significant complications due to this type of poisoning, and the heart is one of the main organs targeted by ALP. Therefore, in this study, we discussed the effect of phosphine on cardiac function. This study is based on data obtained from PubMed, between 2002 and 2020. The key keywords included "Aluminum phosphide," "Oxidative Stress," "Mitochondria," "Cardiovascular disease," and "Treatment." The results showed that ALP produced reactive oxygen species (ROS) due to mitochondrial dysfunction. ROS production leads to red blood cell hemolysis, decreased ATP production, and induction of apoptosis in cardiomyocytes, which eventually results in cardiovascular disease. Since ALP has the most significant effect on cardiomyocytes, the use of appropriate treatment strategies to restore cell function can increase patients' survival.

Abstract
Oxidative stress (OS) represents a threat to the chemical integrity of biomolecules including lipids, proteins, and DNA. The associated molecular damage frequently results in serious health issues, which justifies our concern about this phenomenon. In addition to enzymatic defense mechanisms, there are compounds (usually referred to as antioxidants) that offer chemical protection against oxidative events. Among them, melatonin and its metabolites constitute a particularly efficient chemical family. They offer protection against OS as individual chemical entities through a wide variety of mechanisms including electron transfer, hydrogen transfer, radical adduct formation, and metal chelation, and by repairing biological targets. In fact, many of them including melatonin can be classified as multipurpose antioxidants. However, what seems to be unique to the melatonin's family is their collective effects. Because the members of this family are metabolically related, most of them are expected to be present in living organisms wherever melatonin is produced. Therefore, the protection exerted by melatonin against OS may be viewed as a result of the combined antioxidant effects of the parent molecule and its metabolites. Melatonin's family is rather exceptional in this regard, offering versatile and collective antioxidant protection against OS. It certainly seems that melatonin is one of the best nature's defenses against oxidative damage.

Abstract
Aluminum phosphide (AlP), one of the most commonly used pesticides worldwide, has been the leading cause of self-poisoning mortalities among many Asian countries. The heart is the main organ affected in AlP poisoning. Melatonin has been previously shown to be beneficial in reversing toxic changes in the heart. The present study reveals evidence on the probable protective effects of melatonin on AlP-induced cardiotoxicity in rats. The study groups included a control (almond oil only), ethanol 5% (solvent), sole melatonin (50 mg/kg), AlP (16.7 mg/kg), and 4 AlP + melatonin groups which received 20, 30, 40 and 50 mg/kg of melatonin by intraperitoneal injections following AlP treatment. An electronic cardiovascular monitoring device was used to record the electrocardiographic (ECG) parameters. Heart tissues were studied in terms of oxidative stress biomarkers, mitochondrial complexes activities, ADP/ATP ratio and apoptosis. Abnormal ECG records as well as declined heart rate and blood pressure were found to be related to AlP administration. Based on the results, melatonin was highly effective in controlling AlP-induced changes in the study groups. Significant improvements were observed in the activities of mitochondrial complexes, oxidative stress biomarkers, the activities of caspases 3 and 9, and ADP/ATP ratio following treatment with melatonin at doses of 40 and 50 mg/kg. Our results indicate that melatonin can counteract the AlP-induced oxidative damage in the heart. This is mainly done by maintaining the normal balance of intracellular ATP as well as the prevention of oxidative damage. Further research is warranted to evaluate the possibility of using melatonin as an antidote in AlP poisoning.

Abstract
This study investigated the in vitro protective effects of melatonin against oxidation of 1-palmitoyl-2-linoleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (PLPC) liposomes [(PLPC) = 250 μm] and low-density lipoproteins (LDL, 3 g/L total concentration) by hydroxyl radicals produced by water gamma radiolysis. Conjugated dienes (CD) and hydroperoxides from cholesteryl esters (CEOOH) and phospholipids (PCOOH) were measured as indices of lipid peroxidation. Protein (apoB) oxidation in LDL was assessed by carbonyl groups. Two LDL antioxidants (vitamin E and β-carotene) were monitored as a function of the radiation dose. Three concentrations of melatonin were studied in PLPC liposomes, i.e., 20, 50 and 100 μm, and one in LDL, i.e., 100 μm. Melatonin consumption was also followed up in both lipid models upon irradiation, together with the residual PLPC concentration in liposomes. In PLPC liposomes, scavenging of lipid-derived peroxyl radicals was not the only phenomenon to explain the protective properties of melatonin towards lipid peroxidation. Indeed, melatonin also reacted with hydroxyl radicals generated in aqueous phase, which led us to suggest that hydroxyl radicals reacted relatively slowly with PLPC. Melatonin was efficient in lowering lipid peroxidation in LDL, as shown by the decrease in the formation of CDs and in hydroperoxides. Moreover, melatonin clearly slowed radio-induced apolipoprotein B carbonylation and protected α-tocopherol and β-carotene in LDL.

Abstract
Human placental mitochondria might be a significant source of NADPH- and iron-dependent production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Preeclampsia is believed to be a consequence of overproduction of ROS in human placenta. The experimental results presented here show that melatonin inhibits NADPH- and iron-dependent lipid peroxidation of human placental mitochondria in a concentration-dependent manner. At 1.5 mm concentration, melatonin suppressed this process nearly completely. Melatonin does not influence significantly the iron oxidation at this conditions, indicating that free radical scavenging rather than metal-chelating phenomenon is the basis of its antioxidant action. The fact of inhibition of lipid peroxidation by melatonin at conditions excluding iron participation also supports this hypothesis. Elucidation of the nature of common interaction among melatonin, ascorbate, and alpha-tocopherol in human placental mitochondria was the main aim of this study. In presence of 90 mum ascorbate, the inhibition of lipid peroxidation by melatonin was strong and had a feature of synergistic interaction. At presence of 30 mum ascorbate, which stimulated lipid peroxidation, melatonin caused a loss of pro-oxidant effect of ascorbate. While the interaction of melatonin with ascorbate indicated synergism, the joint action of melatonin and alpha-tocopherol was additive. When all three antioxidants were applied together, the strongest inhibition of lipid peroxidation was observed. The experimental results presented here indicated that melatonin could be considered as an effective component of antioxidant treatment of preeclampsia, allowing the use of reduced doses of vitamin C and E owing to elevated efficiency of their antioxidant activity in placenta when used in combination.
