Abstract
BACKGROUND Regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) is effective for treating young permanent teeth with pulp necrosis. However, its efficacy on delayed replanted avulsed teeth is unclear. AIM This retrospective study aimed to assess the efficacy of REPs in treating delayed replanted immature permanent teeth with apical periodontitis. DESIGN Avulsed teeth receiving REPs were systematically screened based on predetermined criteria. This study assessed the REP outcomes, postoperative periodontal healing, and overall treatment efficacy. Samples were grouped by REP outcomes and root development stage, with Fisher's exact tests used to compare outcomes among different groups. RESULTS Among the included 17 teeth, 47.1% exhibited successful REPs and periodontal healing. Another 47.1%, due to replacement resorption or REP failure, were categorized as tooth survival. Healing of periapical lesions was observed in 88.2% of the cases, but only 41.2% demonstrated continued root development. Although differences were not significant (p = 0.05), teeth with continued root development had a higher rate of functional healing (85.7%) compared to those without (30%). CONCLUSION Within the limitations of this study, REPs presented reliable outcomes for treating delayed replanted immature permanent teeth with apical periodontitis mainly in periapical lesion healing. Teeth with continued root development after REPs exhibited a higher rate of functional healing. Further investigation is required to explore potential synergies between REP outcomes and periodontal healing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Limited evidence exists on the treatment options of tooth repositioning after intrusive luxation. AIM The study aimed to investigate the outcomes and complications of orthodontic extrusion in treating intruded maxillary permanent incisors. DESIGN A prospective study was conducted involving 28 intruded maxillary permanent incisors treated with orthodontic extrusion, compared with a retrospective control group of 29 teeth that underwent spontaneous re-eruption. The success rate of tooth repositioning, as well as pulp condition, periodontal healing, and root development were assessed and compared. RESULTS The success rate of orthodontic extrusion was 96.4%, excluding one tooth that was ankylosed before treatment. There were no significant differences in pulp condition between the orthodontic extrusion and control groups for teeth with immature root development. Teeth with mature root development in the orthodontic group, however, showed a significantly higher rate of pulp necrosis (100%, p < .05). Periodontal healing outcomes were similar across both groups, regardless of the maturity of root development. The root length continued increasing during orthodontic extrusion treatment. CONCLUSIONS Orthodontic extrusion treatment could effectively reposition moderately to severely intrusive permanent incisors, without increasing the risk of complications compared with spontaneous re-eruption.

Abstract
AIM The aim of current study is the development and optimization of biodegradable polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) to be used in the field of Endodontics as intracanal medication in cases of avulsed teeth with extended extra-oral time, utilizing PLGA polymers loaded with the anti-inflammatory drug clobetasol propionate (CP). METHODOLOGY CP-loaded nanoparticles (CP-NPs) were prepared using the solvent displacement method. CP release profile from CP-NPs was assessed for 48 h against free CP. Using extracted human teeth, the degree of infiltration inside the dentinal tubules was studied for both CP-NPs and CP. The anti-inflammatory capacity of CP-NPs was evaluated in vitro measuring their response and reaction against inflammatory cells, in particular against macrophages. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to examine the cytokine release of IL-1β and TNF-α. RESULTS Optimized CP-NPs displayed an average size below 200 nm and a monomodal population. Additionally, spherical morphology and non-aggregation of CP-NPs were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. Interaction studies showed that CP was encapsulated inside the NPs and no covalent bonds were formed. Moreover, CP-NPs exhibited a prolonged and steady release with only 21% of the encapsulated CP released after 48 h. Using confocal laser scanning microscopy, it was observed that CP-NPs were able to display enhanced penetration into the dentinal tubules. Neither the release of TNF-α nor IL-1β increased in CP-NPs compared to the LPS control, displaying results similar and even less than the TCP after 48 h. Moreover, IL-1β release in LPS-stimulated cells, decreased when macrophages were treated with CP-NPs. CONCLUSIONS In the present work, CP-NPs were prepared, optimized and characterized displaying significant increase in the degree of infiltration inside the dentinal tubules against CP and were able to significantly reduce TNF-α release. Therefore, CP-NPs constitute a promising therapy for the treatment of avulsed teeth with extended extra-oral time.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Dental avulsion injury, being one of the traumatic dental injuries, has negative impacts on children's life quality. This study aims to evaluate the Pediatric Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (POQL) scores of children with dental avulsion history from their perspective. MATERIALS AND METHODS The population of this cross-sectional study comprises 40 patients, aged between 8 and 14, who have a history of dental avulsion, in comparison to 40 other healthy peers. A questionnaire including general questions (such as age, gender, loss of tooth due to dental avulsion, malocclusion) and POQL instrument, with subscales including physical function, social function, emotional function, and role function, were completed by these children. Mann-Whitney U-test is used when comparing the POQL scores. RESULTS The social scores (median: 47, interquartile range [IQR]: 17-95) and total score percentages (median: 30, IQR: 14-40) of children with a history of avulsion were higher than those of their healthy peers (p < 0.05). The higher total POQL scores among girls (median: 37, IQR: 31-47) with a history of dental avulsion compared to boys (median: 19, IQR: 8-34) (p = .002) can be attributed to girls achieving higher scores in both social (median: 81, IQR: 39-100) and emotional (median: 35, IQR: 17-47) scores following dental avulsion (psocial = .02, pemotional = .006). Whether the avulsed tooth is replanted or not, it has not made any visible impact on the POQL scores. However, the loss of replanted teeth over time has created a borderline significant difference in emotional scores (median: 21, IQR: 11-35, p = .055). CONCLUSION Within the limits of our study, avulsion injuries have negative effects on children's emotional, social, and total quality of life. Even though avulsion injuries may be inevitable, to prevent these negative effects, it is vital to provide appropriate psychological support in the treatment of these children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Considering that the first visit for dentofacial trauma is generally in emergency departments, the awareness and knowledge of the emergency medicine staff regarding the treatment of dentofacial injuries is very important for the prognosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the knowledge, education, and self-confidence levels of emergency medicine physicians and nurses concerning the diagnosis and treatment of dentofacial traumatic injuries in pediatric patients. METHODS This questionnaire-based, cross-sectional study included emergency medicine physicians and emergency medicine nurses. The survey contained questions and three sections on participants' general data, attitudes, basic knowledge, and confidence levels in managing dentofacial trauma. RESULTS A total of 407 participants (250 emergency medicine physicians and 157 emergency medicine nurses) were included in this study. There was a significant difference between the groups regarding the correct answers to the questions about trauma management and emergency management of crown fractures and avulsed permanent teeth (p <0.05). CONCLUSION Our findings show that there is a lack of information on dentofacial trauma for emergency medicine physicians and nurses. In order to increase knowledge in this area and to improve the diagnosis and management of dentofacial trauma, interdisciplinary seminars, case discussions, and continuing education programs should be held for emergency medicine staff.

Abstract
As a result of a skiing accident, a ten-year-old girl suffered combined injuries to both maxillary central incisor teeth (#1.1 and #2.1). The injuries were uncomplicated crown fractures, apical horizontal root fractures, and a severe extrusive luxation of the coronal segments of the teeth. Her mother repositioned the teeth immediately, resulting in good initial healing. Nine months later, the patient was referred to a specialist to manage the endodontic consequences of the trauma. The apexification treatment of the fractured roots, using a preformed apical barrier technique with bioactive cement, was the treatment of choice, administered to both the avulsed roots at two separate recall visits. The best option for managing the fractured apical segments was to continue with the follow-up, which was conducted to assess the overall case at 30 months. The fractured apexes remained normally positioned inside the socket and were asymptomatic (as they presumably maintained a physiological vascular-nerve supply and, consequently, their vitality), while the apexification treatment led to the healing of the periodontal tissues and to hard tissue formation in the area of the interrupted roots in the avulsed portion of the teeth. The management of traumatic injuries in teeth often requires multiple treatment approaches, because these injuries rarely represent one single type of trauma.

Abstract
Dental autotransplantation is defined as the movement of one tooth from one position to another, within the same patient. Autotransplantation has predictable results; in fact, many studies describe a success rate of over 90%. This article describes a case report concerning the surgical management of this surgical technique. An 18-year-old patient comes for the treatment of her left first mandibular molar (3.6) involved in decay process. An accurate radiological analysis (periapical X-ray and orthopantomographic evaluation) showed an immature left mandibular third molar (3.8), suitable as donor tooth. The mandibular first molar was extracted in an atraumatic way. The intra-alveolar septum was modified with a piezoelectric device. The tooth was slightly depressed in the socket and remained in infra-occlusion. It was stabilized by sutures and a metallic splint. Then, the autotransplanted molar was fixed with a double splinting for 4 weeks. In conclusion, the autotransplantation was followed by endodontic treatment. After 36 months of follow-up, wisdom tooth showed an improvement in clinical features in agreement with radiological examination. The success of this case can be attributed to the atraumatic surgical technique and the immature stage of the transplanted element.

Abstract
This retrospective clinical study investigated the survival probability of avulsed and replanted permanent teeth in relation to functional healing, replacement and inflammatory resorption. The explorative data analysis included data from 36 patients and 49 replanted permanent teeth with a minimum observation time of 60 days; the patients were generally treated according to the current guidelines of the International Association of Dental Traumatology at the university hospital in Munich, Germany, between 2004 and 2017. The mean observation period was 3.5 years. Functional healing was observed in 26.5% (N = 13/49) of the included avulsion cases. In comparison, replacement resorption affected 51.0% (N = 25/49) of the replanted teeth, of which 24.0% (N = 6/25) were lost over the course of years (mean, 6.1 years). In contrast, inflammatory resorption resulted in the early loss of all replanted teeth (mean, 1.7 years) and affected 22.5% (N = 11/49) of all the monitored teeth. Therefore, it can be concluded that tooth avulsion remains a severe dental injury with an unpredictable prognosis. This topic demands further fundamental research aiming to maintain and/or regenerate the periodontal ligament after tooth avulsion, particularly in association with non-physiological tooth rescue.

Abstract
Aim The aim of this article is to report a successful treatment of a complicated crown-root fracture. Background The management of complicated crown-root fracture in young patients is challenging as the fracture line is below the bone crest and the pulp is exposed. Treatment options include crown lengthening, orthodontic extrusion, and intentional replantation. Case description Here, a case of complicated crown-root fracture of tooth number 11 in a ten-year-old boy is presented. Intentional replantation with 180° rotation and slight extrusion and fixation was performed. In addition, root canal therapy was done and tooth was restored with a composite resin after four weeks. The patient was asymptomatic clinically and radiographically after three-year follow-up. Conclusion Intentional replantation with 180° rotation is a valuable treatment for crown root fractures. Clinical significance The management of complicated crown-root fracture using intentional replantation with 180° rotation can help to maintain natural dentition and interdental papilla. Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on the proliferation of undifferentiated periodontal ligament (PDL) fibroblasts. Materials and Methods: The undifferentiated PDL fibroblasts were obtained from two healthy human premolar teeth and cultured in Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium. Cell wells were divided into five groups. Experimental groups received 0.1%, 5%, or 50% PRP; the positive and negative control groups were cultured in fetal bovine serum (FBS) 12% and in a medium without FBS 12%, respectively. The plates were incubated at 37°C for 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7 days. PDL cell viability was assessed by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide proliferation assay. Statistical analysis of the data was accomplished using repeated measure ANOVA and Tukey's test. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The 5% PRP had the greatest effect on undifferentiated fibroblast proliferation, which was significant on the 3rd day. There was no significant difference between 0.1% PRP and positive control during the first 3 days. The group with 50% PRP presented significantly lower proliferation, compared to other experimental and control groups. Conclusions: It may be concluded that the growth-stimulating effect of PRP is dose dependent with the best results in low concentrations.

Abstract
This systematic review and meta-analysis (MA) aimed to verify the capacity of different storage media to preserve viability of periodontal ligament cells in comparison to Hank’s Balanced Salt Solution. The searches, selection process, data extraction and Risk of Bias control were conducted according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis guidelines. Five MA were conducted to compare the cell viability between milk versus Hank's balanced salt solution (HBSS) in a dichotomous (1) or continuous (2) data model; tap water versus HBSS (3); medicinal herbals versus HBSS (4); and saline solution versus HBSS (5). 693 potentially studies were identified, with 18 studies included in the qualitative and 8 studies included in the quantitative analysis. Most of the articles presented a low risk of bias. HBSS medium showed a superior ratio of cell viability compared to tap water (RR 0.26; 95% CI [0.21, 0.32]; p < 0.00001; I2 = 96%) and saline solution (RR 0.76; 95% CI [0.69, 0.84]; p < 0.0001; I2 = 99%). Herbal medicines showed a similar ratio of cell viability when compared to HBSS (RR 0.97; 95% CI [0.94, 1.00]; p = 0.08; I2 = 50%). Mixed results were observed between milk and HBSS: a superior ratio of HBSS was observed in an overall evaluation (RR 0.26; 95% CI [0.21, 0.32]; p < 0.00001; I2 = 96%), and a similar ratio was achieved when periodontal ligament (PDL) cells were removed prior to immersion in the solution (RR 0.94; 95% CI [0.87, 1.01]; p = 0.10; I2 = 0%) or rinsed in tap water or maintained in open air prior to immersion (RR 0.63; 95% CI [0.35, 1.12]; p = 0.11; I2 = not applicable). This systematic review and MA suggests that milk and herbal medicines could represent an alternative to HBSS. However, more studies are necessary to obtain a reliable conclusion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare the accuracy of linear and volumetric measurements of artificial external root resorption (ERR) cavities by cone beam CT (CBCT) images obtained at four voxel sizes and by using four different software ex vivo. METHODS ERR cavities were created on 40 extracted single rooted anterior teeth. Images were obtained by using Planmeca CBCT unit at endo mode (0.075 mm); high-resolution mode (0.1 mm); high-definition mode (0.15 mm) and normal resolution mode (0.2 mm) voxel sizes. Images were analyzed by two observers using four different software (Romexis, 3D Doctor, ITK-SNAP, and OsiriX). (1) Diameter; (2) height; (3) depth; and (4) volume of the ERR were measured. CBCT measurements were then compared with direct physical measurements. ANOVA was used with general linear model analysis. The significance level was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS One-way ANOVA general linear model analysis showed no significant difference between or within observers for diameter, height, depth and volume measurements (p > 0.05). We found significant differences for diameter and volume measurements among softwares in terms of mean differences as compared to mean standard direct measurements (p < 0.05). We found statistically significant differences among voxel sizes and software for height measurements (p < 0.05). In addition, we found significant differences for diameter and volume measurements (p < 0.05) suggesting more accurate measurements for the cervical region when compared to apical region. CONCLUSIONS Observers using CBCT images obtained at four voxel sizes performed similarly in the quantification of artificial ERR with clinically insignificant distinction between CBCT softwares used.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dental avulsion is a commonly reported traumatic injury causing pain, aesthetic, functional, psychological and mental impairment. Since parents are in the immediate vicinity of children in such situations, their knowledge regarding the same is of great importance. AIM The aim of present study was to assess the level of parental knowledge and their attitude towards dental avulsion and its emergency management. MATERIALS AND METHODS A 10-stemmed questionnaire was prepared for this study which was modified form of questionnaire used by Raphael and Gregory. The questionnaire consisted of two parts and was provided in both English and Hindi languages. Parents had to mark one option provided to them in multiple choice questions, which they found to be right. A written consent according to ethical guidelines was taken by all the participants before filling up the questionnaire. The survey consisted of 550 parents who accompanied their children aged between 6 to 13 years in the Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry, Peoples Dental Academy, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India. Chi- square test was applied to evaluate the associations in this study. RESULTS Statistically it was observed that 34.5% of male participants exhibited more knowledge regarding the necessity of reimplantation of avulsed tooth in comparison to female participants. Also parents with higher educational background have showed positive response toward knowledge and attitude of emergency treatment of avulsed permanent tooth. About 25.6% of higher secondary level, 20.9% of undergraduate level, 10.9% of elementary school level and 0.4% of illiterate participants responded that reimplantation of avulsed permanent tooth is possible. CONCLUSION It was concluded from the study that regardless of the age, education level or other factors, parental knowledge of tooth avulsion management was found to be very low in our society. Parents who participated in this study reported having insufficient knowledge about dental trauma and unskilled to provide emergency care to their child.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tooth replantation after traumatic avulsion or transplantation is a challenge in oral surgery. A special method named auto-alloplastic replantation, in which a titanium post is used after extraoral endodontic treatment, combines several advantages. The treatment is performed in one step with no further endodontic intervention, no wide root canal instrumentation, no recontamination, and reduced endodontic infection. This is the first report on replantation of an ectopic tooth in a patient with a cleft lip and alveolus using this method. CASE PRESENTATION This case report presents the treatment of a 13-year-old white boy with a cleft lip and alveolus who had an ectopic incisor in the cleft region. His rehabilitation was performed by a tooth transposition using the auto-alloplastic replantation technique. After preparation of the displaced incisor from the vestibule, extraoral endodontic treatment followed using a titanium post prior to replantation in a newly formed socket. In the follow-up, the tooth is still in place and functioning after 2 years. CONCLUSIONS This method can be used to bridge the years while a patient is young and jaw growth is incomplete until bone augmentation and implantation can be performed. The tooth will preserve the remaining alveolar ridge and help the adolescent psychologically.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE AND BACKGROUND Although several surgical techniques have been reported, no study has yet reported alternative strategies for endodontic treatment of autogenous transplanted teeth. Therefore, the aim of this clinical report is to present the long-term endodontic outcome of a nonvital autogenously transplanted third molar treated with an Er,Cr:YSGG laser and radial firing tips (RFTs). CASE REPORT Autogenous tooth transplantation can be considered an alternative to restore edentulous areas and, in donor's teeth with complete root formation, root canal treatment should be performed up to 14 days following transplantation. In the present case report, the patient returned only after 6 months, with clinical and radiological signs of apical periodontitis (AP) associated with the transplanted tooth. METHODS Instead of traditional endodontic chemical irrigants or medications, the protocol for smear-layer removal and root canal disinfection was based on intracanal irradiation with an Er,Cr:YSGG laser and RFTs. RESULTS After 3-years' follow-up, the complete reestablishment of the periodontal ligament and the arrest of the resorptive process could be noticed. CONCLUSIONS This protocol has shown to be effective for the endodontic treatment of a transplanted multi-rooted tooth with AP. Further randomized clinical trials should be conducted to clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of this laser-assisted endodontic protocol.

Abstract
Background This study was aimed to investigate whether regeneration of periodontal ligament (PDL) like tissue could be promoted by stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF1) and bone morphogenetic protein-7 (BMP7) induced cell homing in delayed replantation of avulsed teeth. Methods Canine mandibular premolar teeth were first extracted and air-dried for 2 h followed by complete detachment of their PDL tissues. The crown and pulp of the teeth were also removed. Twenty-four roots divided into two groups (n = 12/group) were used for the following in vivo transplantation. The roots of Group A were treated with 17 % EDTA for 24 h to achieve demineralization, and then coated with SDF1 and BMP7 supplemented collagen solution. The roots of Group B were similarly treated except being coated with a pristine collagen solution. The above roots were transplanted in the sockets that formed previously during tooth extraction. At 6 months’ post-operation, PDL-like tissue composed of spindle-shaped cells, capillaries and highly organized collagen fibers was observed in the interstitial space between the avulsed root surface and surrounding alveolar bone in Group A. The neo-fibers inserted deeply and perpendicularly into the cementum and adjacent bone. The periodontium-like characteristics of the neo-tissue was confirmed by immunohistochemical staining for collagen I, fibronectin and osteocalcin. Results A high incidence of PDL re-establishment as 42 % was achieved for samples of Group A. However, no PDL-like tissue was found but root ankylosis and replacement resorption as well as inflammatory resorption was observed in the replanted roots of Group B. Conclusions It can be confirmed that avulsed teeth could be successfully rescued even in delayed transplantation to avoid dentoalveolar ankylosis or replacement resorption via the current developed cell homing method. Abstract
Resorption of tooth structures can occur as a result of physiological, pathological, and idiopathic factors. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can prevent its serious complications. This case report presents surgical endodontic management of a trauma-induced perforating external root resorption, which was diagnosed with the help of cone beam computed tomography. Following root canal treatment, intentional replantation of the tooth was performed so as to expose the opening of the resorption defect to allow for complete debridement and closure. Eighteen months follow-up showed arrest of root resorption, and progressive healing of the defect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental avulsion is defined as the complete displacement of tooth out of socket along with severed periodontal ligament with or without fracture of the alveolar bone. Reimplantation of the avulsed tooth is considered as a best treatment modality due to its biological and psychological advantages. The viability of periodontal ligament cell on the root surface determines the prognosis of reimplanted tooth. The knowledge of parents regarding important steps to be taken immediately after dental avulsion is considered crucial for success of the treatment. AIM The study was conducted to evaluate the knowledge and attitude of parents in Chennai with regard to avulsed permanent tooth of their children and their emergency management using a questionnaire. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included 529 parents who accompanied their children, aged between 6 years and 12 years, to the Department of Pedodontics, Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals. Chi-square test was done to evaluate the association between the results and the genders, educational level, and geographical status of the respondents. RESULTS The study revealed even though 90.7% of parents knew that saving an avulsed permanent tooth is important, but almost one third of the population thought ice water was the best media to transport an avulsed teeth. CONCLUSION There is an imperative need for educating the parents regarding management of avulsed tooth for which 87.9% showed interest.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study evaluated the healing process of teeth replanted after root treatment and intracanal dressing with indomethacin alone or indomethacin with calcium hydroxide (Ca[OH]2). MATERIALS AND METHODS Through a case-control study, 24 teeth of 6 adult dogs were extracted, dried, and divided into 4 groups according to the root surface treatment protocols performed before replantation and the intracanal medication used after replantation. In group 1 (negative control), root surfaces were treated by immersion in a 0.9% saline solution and then replanted. In the other groups, the roots were immersed for 10 minutes in Ca(OH)2 (group 2), indomethacin (group 3), or a solution of indomethacin and Ca(OH)2 (group 4). After 2 weeks, group 1 teeth were subjected to single-visit root canal treatment and obturation with gutta-percha and sealer consisting of zinc oxide and eugenol. The teeth in the other groups were subjected to intracanal dressing with the same material used for immersion. After an additional period of 28 weeks, the animals were euthanized and the jaws containing the replanted teeth were processed for histologic analysis. Histometric values were statistically analyzed, with significance set at a P value less than or equal to .05. RESULTS Group 1 exhibited significantly more normal periodontium than group 4 (P = .02). Total resorption was greater in group 4 than in group 1 (P = .02). No statistically significant difference in the percentage of surface resorption or in total inactive resorption was observed between the groups. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study suggest that intracanal dressing and topical root treatment with Ca(OH)2 with or without indomethacin is not recommended for teeth dried for 50 minutes, but the use of indomethacin alone as root surface treatment for delayed tooth replantation deserves further study using longer drying periods. In addition, the present results suggest that a single-visit root canal, performed up to 2 weeks after replantation, might be indicated for teeth dried for up to 50 minutes.

Abstract
This study evaluated the immunohistochemical expression of OPG, RANK, and RANKL proteins in the repair after immediate and delayed replantation of rat teeth. Fifty-six Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus albinus) had their maxillary right lateral incisor extracted and then replanted, according to the following conditions: group I (control; n = 8), teeth were not extracted; group II (n = 16), immediate replantation; group III (n = 16), delayed replantation without treatment; and group IV (n = 16), delayed replantation after root surface treatment (periodontal ligament removal and immersion in 2% acidulated-phosphate sodium fluoride) and calcium hydroxide intracanal dressing. Rats in group I were euthanized on the first day of the experiment, while the animals in the other groups were euthanized 10 and 60 days after replantation (n = 8/period). Hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections were obtained for histological analysis. The immunohistochemical analysis revealed expression of OPG and RANKL proteins in all groups and both postreplantation times, except for group II at 60 days. In the experimental groups, RANK expression was observed only at 10 days. In conclusion, there was strong immunostaining for the OPG-RANK-RANKL system at the earlier postreplantation time, suggesting a more effective participation of these proteins at the start of the healing process, as their expression decreased at 60 days.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Following avulsion, the periodontal ligament (PDL) cells are at risk of necrosis. To achieve a favorable survival prognosis, the PDL cells must be kept viability. Therefore, immediate replantation is considered as the treatment of choice and in case it is not possible, storing the tooth in an appropriate storage media should be considered. Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) is a glucose-electrolyte solution which can keep the optimal osmolality as well as pH and can even provide nutrients which are necessary for cellular growth. The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of different concentrations of ORS in maintaining the viability of the PDL cells at different time points. MATERIALS AND METHODS PDL cells were obtained from healthy extracted human premolars. Then, 8×10³ cells were seeded in each well of 96-well plate. Afterwards, each well was treated with ORS in three different concentrations and DMEM for 1, 3, 6, and 9 hours. Cell viability was determined by using the MTT assay. One way-ANOVA and post hoc (LSD) test were used for comparing the study groups. RESULTS According to the results, 25% and 50% concentrations of ORS were more effective in preserving the PDL cell viability and could maintain 79.98% and 68.34% of the PDL cells, respectively, at least for the last experimental time point (up to 9 hours). CONCLUSIONS Therefore, our findings indicate that ORS might be a suitable storage medium for avulsed teeth.

Abstract
Avulsion of permanent teeth is one of the most serious dental injuries, and a prompt and correct emergency management is very important for the prognosis. The International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) has developed a consensus statement after a review of the dental literature and group discussions. Experienced researchers and clinicians from various specialties were included in the task group. The guidelines represent the current best evidence and practice based on literature research and professionals' opinion. In cases where the data did not appear conclusive, recommendations were based on the consensus opinion or majority decision of the task group. Finally, the IADT board members were giving their opinion and approval. The primary goal of these guidelines is to delineate an approach for the immediate or urgent care of avulsed permanent teeth.

Abstract
AIM To assess, by means of a structured questionnaire, mothers' level of knowledge with regards to the immediate emergency management of dental trauma in the Emirate of Ajman, United Arab Emirates (UAE). METHODS A cross-sectional study using anonymous structured questionnaires was employed for mothers chosen at random from child care centres. The questionnaire surveyed mothers' background, knowledge and management of tooth fracture, avulsion, and also investigated mothers' self-assessed knowledge of the availability and priority of emergency services of trauma in UAE. RESULTS The sample consisted of 676 mothers (response rate 96.6%) who attended mother and child care centres in Ajman over a period of two months (January-February 2011). More than half of the mothers participated in this study were in their twenties and 69.4% had university qualifications. Around 61.5% of the mothers had previous direct or indirect experience of dental trauma. Mother's knowledge of dental trauma seemed to be inadequate. Chi-square test indicated that there was no significant difference in the number of correct responses in relation to age, level of education, or number of observed trauma cases. Most mothers were unaware of the availability of after working hours emergency services. They were dissatisfied with their level of knowledge of dental trauma and the majority were interested in having further education on the topic. CONCLUSIONS The level of knowledge of dental trauma management (especially tooth avulsion) among mothers in Ajman was inadequate and education campaigns are necessary to improve the emergency management of dental injuries. Therefore it is important to educate the public of the availability of after hours dental emergency services to overcome any delay in seeking professional help in cases of dental trauma.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate pre-injury factors, causes of dental injuries and healing complications after traumatic injuries to permanent teeth. The analysed sample comprised 889 permanent teeth of 384 patients, who were treated in the Dentistry Department in Faculty Hospital in Pilsen. Enamel-dentin fractures [233 teeth (26.2%)] and lateral luxations [207 teeth (23.3%)] were the most frequent injuries. The age of the patients at the time of injury varied between 7 and 65 years. Predominantly, children were affected [587 injured teeth (66.0%)]. The most frequent causes of injuries in patients older than 11 years were various sport activities, predominantly bicycling. Pulp necrosis was observed in 239 teeth (26.9%). It was the most frequent post-traumatic complication in all types of dental traumas. Teeth with a completed root formation demonstrated a higher prevalence of pulp necrosis than teeth with an incomplete root formation in all types of luxation injuries. External root resorption was observed in 144 teeth. The rate of inflammatory resorption differed between the various types of luxation injuries (extrusive luxation 5.6%, lateral luxation 11.6%, intrusive luxation 33.3%). Following avulsion and replantation, active inflammatory resorptions were diagnosed in 13 (26.5%) of 49 replanted teeth and ankylosis/replacement resorptions were observed in 21 (42.9%) of 49 replanted teeth. After avulsion, primarily, immature teeth were affected by these complications. Within the observation period of 5 years, 39 teeth (4.4%) had to be removed (16 teeth with root fractures, 19 avulsed and replanted teeth, 3 luxated teeth, 1 tooth with crown-root fracture).

Abstract
The purpose of the present investigation was to use an intra-individual experimental-control study design to explore if application of Emdogain prior to re-plantation after a dry extra-alveolar period of 60 min would promote a favorable healing of the periodontal ligament cells. Ten patients, for whom already decisions had been taken to extract two maxillary premolars because of crowding, participated in the study. The teeth were extracted and endodontic treatment was performed extra orally. The experimental tooth and its alveolar socket were covered with Emdogain prior to replantation. The contra lateral tooth served as a control and was replanted without any prior treatment. The teeth were stabilized with a retainer for 3-7 days and the patients were followed up every third week. After 13 weeks, the teeth were finally extracted and prepared for histological examination. Radiographs were taken before the study period, at day 29 and prior to the final extraction. The results were in favor of Emdogain, but the overall difference between the Emdogain-treated tooth and its control was rather small, and it seemed questionable if the registered differences could be of any obvious practical clinical importance. Histologically, all the teeth showed some degree of pathology after such a long dry extra-oral time and the outcome seemed to be more correlated to the individual than to the treatment. Given more favorable conditions regarding storage medium and/or extra-oral time, Emdogain might still be of value for an uncomplicated healing after replantation.

Abstract
When a tooth is avulsed and replanted following traumatic dental injury, complications such as replacement and inflammatory resorption may occur. Ultimately, resorption may result in loss of the tooth. This case report describes a traumatic injury to a permanent tooth resulting in complete root resorption within a short period, which required surgery. In the present case, improper treatment measures such as dry condition of the avulsed tooth before replantation and extra-oral retrograde root canal filling may have led to rapid complete root resorption. Even if it is impossible to avoid resorption completely, the overall knowledge of both dentists and patients regarding traumatic dental injuries should be improved to delay the progress of resorption.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Root canal therapy is often recommended after mature tooth transplantation. The aim of this work was to histologically evaluate, in dogs, the best time for root canal treatment in autogenic transplants of teeth with complete root formation. STUDY DESIGN Mandibular lateral incisors of 8 dogs were extracted and transplanted to the homologous alveolus, endodontically treated after 15 (Group I) or 40 (Group II) days, and processed for routine histological evaluation. Tissue responses on the root surface were evaluated by light microscopy and classified as normal periodontium, active inflammatory root resorption, favorable healing, and unfavorable healing. RESULTS The mean of normal periodontal tissue was in 88.6% in Group I and 79.4% in Group II. There were no significant statistical differences between the groups in all analyzed parameters. CONCLUSION The results indicated that endodontic therapy can be postponed for 40 days postoperatively when the tooth stability is higher.
