Abstract
BACKGROUND Lip, oral and pharyngeal cancers make up a small percentage of total cancer cases worldwide and have reported lower rates of cancer-related deaths globally in 2020, but their 5-year survival rate in either early or advanced stages is different. The study evaluated the global incidence, mortality, risk factors, and temporal trends by age, gender, and geographical locations of lip, oral cavity, and pharyngeal cancer. METHODS Incidence and mortality rates were extracted from Cancer Incidence in Five Continents (CI5) volumes I-XI, the Nordic Cancer Registries (NORDCAN), the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program, and the WHO IARC mortality database. Joinpoint regression was used to calculate the Average Annual Percentage Change to examine trends. RESULTS The highest incidence rates were found in Melanesia and South-Central Asia and mortality rates were 8.2 and 7.5. Risk factors associated with incidence and mortality included HDI, tobacco use, alcohol consumption, poor diet, and chronic health conditions such as hypertension. Increasing trends of incidence and mortality were observed in females from Malta; males aged 50 and above from the United Kingdom, and females aged 50 and above from Slovakia reporting the largest increase. CONCLUSIONS Although global incidence and mortality trends reported an overall decrease, significant increases were found for older age groups and female subjects. Incidence increase may be due to the growing prevalence of lifestyle, metabolic risk factors, and HPV infections, especially in developed countries.

Abstract
Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are the two most common types of carcinomas, affecting a total of 5.4 million people each year in the United States. Sun-exposed areas, especially the face and nose, are most affected given the strong association between these carcinomas and ultraviolet radiation. Less research has been done surrounding carcinomas of the lip, despite the significant aesthetic and functional importance of this area. Although lip carcinomas tend to follow a classic, unique distribution pattern that favors basal cell carcinoma on the upper lip and squamous cell carcinoma on the lower lip, more cases of lower lip basal cell carcinoma are being reported, warranting further educational awareness to differentiate carcinomas of the lower lip. In this article, we provide an updated overview of the risk factors, presentations, differential diagnoses, metastatic risks, evaluation, management guidelines, and outcomes of lower lip carcinoma. Of note, recent advances in imaging modalities are beginning to show promise as a non-invasive, affordable, and rapid way to detect and stage tumors. We conclude that increased clinical awareness and investigation of lower lip carcinoma is needed to improve early intervention, as a delayed diagnosis can rapidly alter the management and outcomes of lip carcinomas.

Abstract
Purpose. The objective of this study was to review lip tumor diagnosed subjects from Oltenia
region, in the past 5 years according to gender, age, home environment,
profession, geographic area, smoking habit, associated diseases, tumor location,
macroscopic aspect and histological type. Material and Methods. The study was
done at the Oral and Maxillo-Facial Clinic of the Emergency Clinical County
Hospital of Craiova, and involved the analysis of patient file records, surgical
registers, histopathological bulletins, from 2012-2016. Results. Of the 175
subjects included in this study, all of them diagnosed with lip tumor pathology,
109 (62.29%) were men, and 66 (37.71%) were women, all of
them with ages between 6 and 92 years, with a mean age of 61 years. Distribution
of study participants according to the home residence showed that majority of
the subjects lived in rural area. The most frequently localization of lip tumors
in study participants was at the lower lip-140 cases (80%), than at
the upper lip-35 cases (20%).According to histological
characteristics, distribution of the malignant lip tumors was
87.39%-squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), 5.41%-basal cell
carcinoma (BCC) and 7.20%-other type of tumors. Conclusions. The
lower lip was the most affected, by lip cancer, and squamous cell carcinoma
represents the most frequently histological type of these tumors.

Abstract
Background Lower lip squamous cell carcinoma (LLSCC) is a common malignancy of the head and neck, being mainly a consequence of a chronic exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light solar radiation. Here, we evaluated the clinicopathological profile of patients with photosensitive disorders (xeroderma pigmentosum, lupus erythematosus and albinism) that developed LLSCC. Material and Methods Data from patients who had a diagnosed LLSCC with a prior xeroderma pigmentosum, lupus erythematosus or albinism diagnosis that were treated at INCA from 1999 to 2012 were collected from patients’ medical records (n=16). The control group was composed of 68 patients with LLSCC without a medical history of photosensitivity. The clinicopathological data of this study population were collected and the association between these variables was analyzed by Fisher’s exact test. Survival curves were constructed using the Kaplan–Meier method and compared by log-rank test. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS statistics package. Results The mean age of patients in the photosensitive and non-photosensitive groups was 42 years and 67 years, respectively (p<0.0001). A previous history of malignant diseases was more common in the photosensitive group (p=0.001). In both groups, most tumors showed a pathological stage I/II disease. Overall and cancer-specific survival were not statistically different. However, disease-free interval showed a significant difference (p=0.01) between the photosensitive and non-photosensitive patients. Conclusions Photosensitive patients presented LLSCC at earlier age but it usually was not the primary tumor in these patients. Furthermore, a more aggressive pathological behavior was not seen when compared with tumors from non-photosensitive patients. The disease-free interval was lower in photosensitive patients, as expected. Key words:Lip cancer, Xeroderma Pigmentosum, Albinism, Lupus erythematosus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Some regions of Spain along with Canada and Australia have the highest rates of lip cancer in the world. The objective of this study was to examine the trends in the pattern of occurrence of lip cancer in Madrid, Spain. METHODS Data were extracted from the Central Tumour Registry of Madrid, between 1990 and 2011. Variables examined were age, sex, topographic and morphological location and tumour histology. Two consecutive periods, 1990-2001 and 2002-2011, were studied by descriptive and analytical methods, and the data from the two periods were statistically compared. RESULTS A total of 881 cases were registered during the period 1990-2011. Comparing data between the two periods (1990-2001 and 2002-2011), subtle variations in age, histology and location were noted. Gender ratios remained constant. The mean age increased from 66.3 to 69.7 years (P < 0.05). In the second period, the histological distribution showed an increase in frequency of basal cell carcinoma, from 2.1% to 4.7%, while the frequency of squamous cell carcinomas remained constant. Basal cell carcinoma no longer predominantly occurred in women, decreasing from 80% to 21.1% (P < 0.001). The distribution by gender of squamous cell carcinoma had become more equal due an increase in its frequency in women (P < 0.001). Frequency of tumours on lip mucosa and commissure had increased between the two periods (P < 0.004). CONCLUSIONS The pattern of lip cancer reported to Public Hospitals of Madrid is changing: declining rates are noted since 2001-02. However, it is necessary to monitor these data to confirm the observed trends in future years.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common type of lip and oral cavity cancers. In majority of cases it follows quite common course, and after the surgery it does not produce any harm. This case presents unusual and unexpected growth of upper lip squamous cell carcinoma with severe cosmetic problems, and possible health threats. CASE PRESENTATION A 46-year-old woman noticed on her upper lip "a spot, the size of a wheat grain", which grew rapidly and reached the size of 0.6 cm during a two-week period. The lesion was red, hard and painful, attached to the skin. It was surgically removed, and primary histopathological finding was follicular keratosis. Recurrent tumor appeared seven days after the operation, with the extreme swelling of the upper lip. The patient was sent to a tertiary hospital, where fungal or bacterial infection was excluded. The change on the patient's upper lip reached the size of 5 × 2 cm, as soft, reddish nodular tumor. Squamous cell carcinoma was diagnosed after the histopathological audit. With the second surgical intervention the tumor was removed and the defect reconstructed. CONCLUSIONS Prognosis of this type of tumor, apart from its size and differentiation level, depends on infiltration in tumor-surrounding tissue, perineural and perivascular spread. Therefore, it is always necessary to analyze the removed skin especially on margins.
