Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of various surface treatments and production methods on the shear bond strength (SBS) between reline material and denture base resins. MATERIALS AND METHODS One-hundred-twenty specimens were produced using conventional heat-polymerization, subtractive, and additive techniques. Each group consisted of 40 specimens. The specimens were divided into four subgroups, each with 10 samples, for surface treatments. These subgroups were: (1) Control-only monomer application, (2) 50 μm airborne-particle abrasion, (3) 110 μm airborne-particle abrasion, and (4) Roughening with tungsten carbide bur. Representative specimens from each subgroup were examined under SEM. Then, auto-polymerized resin was condensed in the center of the specimens. Specimens were subjected to thermal aging (5000 cycles at 5-55°C). The SBS test was conducted and failure loads were recorded. The data were evaluated by two-way ANOVA and Tukey pairwise multiple comparisons method (p < 0.05). RESULTS The additively produced group showed significantly lower SBS than conventional and subtractive groups (p < 0.001), with no significant differences between the subtractive and conventional groups. Specimens that underwent monomer application only showed the lowest SBS among surface treatments, while 50 μm airborne-particle abrasion showed the highest SBS. Based on the partial eta-squared analysis results, the surface treatment mainly impacted SBS. CONCLUSIONS Among the surface treatment methods, treating denture bases with 50 μm airborne-particle abrasion is more effective for maintaining adhesion, especially in the additive technique.

Abstract
The key factors that are needed for bone regeneration to take place include cells (osteoprogenitor and immune-inflammatory cells), a scaffold (blood clot) that facilitates the deposition of the bone matrix, signaling molecules, blood supply, and mechanical stability. However, even when these principles are met, the overall amount of regenerated bone, its stability over time and the incidence of complications may significantly vary. This manuscript provides a critical review on the main local and systemic factors that may have an impact on bone regeneration, trying to focus, whenever possible, on bone regeneration simultaneous to implant placement to treat bone dehiscence/fenestration defects or for bone contouring. In the future, it is likely that bone tissue engineering will change our approach to bone regeneration in implant dentistry by replacing the current biomaterials with osteoinductive scaffolds combined with cells and mechanical/soluble factors and by employing immunomodulatory materials that can both modulate the immune response and control other bone regeneration processes such as osteogenesis, osteoclastogenesis, or inflammation. However, there are currently important knowledge gaps on the biology of osseous formation and on the factors that can influence it that require further investigation. It is recommended that future studies should combine traditional clinical and radiographic assessments with non-invasive imaging and with patient-reported outcome measures. We also envisage that the integration of multi-omics approaches will help uncover the mechanisms responsible for the variability in regenerative outcomes observed in clinical practice.

Abstract
Statement of the problem Morphology of the residual ridge (RR) is expected to influence the masticatory performance (MP) of complete denture (CD) patients, but considerable details of this relationship are unknown. Purpose We aimed to investigate the association between the objective MP and RR morphology of CD wearers and other contributory factors affecting their MP. Materials and methods Sixty-five patients with well-fitting upper and lower CDs with no complaints of pain were enrolled. The objective MP was measured using test gummy jelly and a fully automated measuring device. The RR form was divided into U-type, V-type, I-intermediate, and F-Flat, then combinations of upper and lower RR forms (combined RR) were classified. The height was measured using CD's denture basal surface replicas, while occlusal contact of CDs was assessed using a tooth contact analysis system. The relationship between surveyed factors and MP was evaluated using Spearman's rank correlation, Kruskal-Wallis test, generalized linear regression, and analysis of covariance. Results Participants with F-F and V-F combined RR forms had the lowest MP, while those with U-U and U-I forms had the highest MP, regardless of RR height. Participants with low RR height had the lowest MP, and those with high RR height had the highest MP, regardless of RR form. The analysis of covariance revealed that mandibular RR height, combined RR forms, and total occlusal contact area significantly affected the MP. Conclusions Our findings confirmed that the mandibular RR height, RR form combinations, and occlusal contact influence the MP of CD wearers.ClinicalImplications:The MP of CD wearers varied, depending on the height and form of the RR, as well as the occlusal contact area of the CDs. The results of this manuscript show that the morphology of the denture bearing area and the occlusion of the CDs are essential factors in predicting the treatment outcome of CD wearers. This allows the clinician to fabricate a complete denture with the denture basal surfaces adjusted and occlusion provided according to the patient. CD patients can be educated on how to chew to improve MP based on their own RR morphology.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to compare the shear bond strength of relined CAD-CAM complete removable dental prosthesis (CRDP) resins with conventional heat-polymerized polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) resin. METHODS A total of 96 resin specimens in identical dimensions of 10 mm × 10 mm × 11 mm were fabricated for four study groups [#1- Conventional heat-polymerized group: n=24 (ProBase); #2- Milled#1: n=24 (Ivobase); #3- Milled#2: n=24 (Ivotion); #4- 3D-printed: n=24, (NextDent Denture 3D+)]. Twelve specimens in each group were sectioned in the middle to produce a 3 mm defect and then were relined using a conventional denture relining material. All specimens underwent thermocycling (5-55°C) for 10,000 cycles. The shear bond tests were carried out in a universal testing machine. One-way ANOVA and Tukey's test were used for statistical analysis (p<0.05). The two-parameter Weibull distribution values were calculated. RESULTS Relined 3D-printed specimens had a significantly lower shear bond strength when compared with conventional (p=0.0003) and milled groups (Milled#1: p=0.0004; Milled#2: p<0.0001). There were no differences in the shear bond strengths between the milled and conventional groups. Weibull distribution presented the highest shape value for the non-relined Milled#1 (22.83) group and the lowest values for the 3D-printed relined group (4.001). CONCLUSION The findings of this study conclude that the shear bond strength of the conventionally-relined 3D-printed resins used for fabricating CRDPs was inferior to the shear bond strength of conventionally-relined resins employed for manufacturing CRDPs using CAD-CAM milling and conventional heat-polymerization techniques. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE When considering 3D-printing for the fabrication of CRDPs, it is recommended to employ it in clinical situations where a frequent need for denture relining is not expected.

Abstract
Oral health condition, bone mineral density, skeletal muscle mass, fall, fracture, and frailty seem to be strongly interconnected. This study aimed to investigate associations between probability of osteoporotic fractures and oral health in the elderly. In total, 2322 Korean subjects from the 2008-2009 Korea National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey aged over 65 years were included. The 10-year probabilities of major and hip fractures were calculated using the Fracture Risk Assessment (FRAX) tool. Data on anthropometry, skeletal bone mineral density, sociodemographic characteristics, physical activity, individual history of fractures and falls, parental history of osteoporosis, number of teeth, metabolic syndrome, the Decayed, Missing, and Filled permanent Teeth index, and Community Periodontal Index (CPI), were collected. Participants were classified into three groups based on FRAX score for major osteoporotic fractures. A multivariate linear regression analysis was conducted to analyze associations between FRAX scores and oral health-related factors, adjusting for confounding factors. BMI, presence of metabolic syndrome, number of teeth, dental patterns, and CPI score showed significant differences among three groups in males and females. Results from multivariate linear regression analysis demonstrated significant relationships between total tooth number and probabilities of fracture in male and female elderly. The interdisciplinary approach for handling osteoporosis and sarcopenia including dentists, physicians is necessary to facilitate a better quality of life in the elderly.

Abstract
Purpose The involvement of oral mucosa cells in mechanical stress-induced bone resorption is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of cyclic pressure-induced cytokines from oral mucosal cells (human gingival fibroblasts: hGFs) on osteoclast activity in vitro.Methods Cyclic pressure at 50 kPa, which represents high physiologic occlusal force of dentures on the molar area, was applied to hGFs. NFAT-reporter stable RAW264.7 preosteoclasts (NFAT/Luc-RAW cells) were cultured in conditioned medium collected from hGF cultures under cyclic pressure or static conditions. NFAT activity and osteoclast formation were determined by luciferase reporter assay and TRAP staining, respectively. Cyclic pressure-induced cytokines in hGF culture were detected by ELISA, real-time RT-PCR, and cytokine array analyses.Results Conditioned media from hGFs treated with 48 hours of cyclic pressure significantly induced NFAT activity and increased multinucleated osteoclast formation. Furthermore, the cyclic pressure significantly increased the bone resorption activity of RAW264.7 cells. Cyclic pressure significantly increased the expression of major inflammatory cytokines including IL-1β/IL-1β, IL-6/IL-6, IL-8/IL-8 and MCP-1/CCL2 in hGFs compared to hGFs cultured under static conditions, and it suppressed osteoprotegerin (OPG/OPG) expression. A cytokine array detected 12 cyclic pressure-induced candidates. Among them, IL-8, decorin, MCP-1 and ferritin increased, whereas IL-28A and PDGF-BB decreased, NFAT activation of NFAT/Luc-RAW cells.Conclusions These results suggest that cyclic pressure-induced cytokines from hGFs promote osteoclastogenesis, possibly including up-regulation of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8 and MCP-1, and down-regulation of OPG. These findings introduce the possible involvement of GFs in mechanical stress-induced alveolar ridge resorption, such as in denture wearers.

Abstract
Background Masticatory ability is an essential factor for sustaining quality of life and social and systemic well-being, particularly in elderly. This study aimed to reveal the association between subjective masticatory difficulty and skeletal bone mineral density (BMD). Methods Data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which was conducted from 2008 to 2011 were analyzed. This study included 13,092 Koreans (5656 males, 7436 females) over 50 years of age. Masticatory difficulty was evaluated based on a self-reported questionnaire. Areal BMD of the total hip, femoral neck, and lumbar spine as well as lean body mass were determined using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Data about the sociodemographic characteristics, physical activity, number of teeth present, sum of decayed, missing, and filled permanent teeth (DMFT) index and Community Periodontal Index (CPI) were collected. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to analyze associations between subjective masticatory difficulty and BMD, adjusting for the confounding covariates. Results Significant differences were observed in the areal BMD of the total hip, femoral neck, and lumbar spine as well as lean body mass accordance with the presence of subjective masticatory difficulty in both males and females. The number of teeth, DMFT, and CPI score did not show significant differences based on the presence of self-reported satisfaction of chewing performance in both males and females. Results from multivariate logistic regression demonstrated that the subjective masticatory difficulty showed significant interactions with skeletal BMD and the associations between masticatory satisfaction and BMD of the total hip and femoral neck were more prominent in females compared to those in males. Conclusions The skeletal BMD, particularly areal BMD of the femoral neck was significantly associated with subjective masticatory difficulty in elderly, especially in elder females.

Abstract
Residual ridge resorption (RRR) is a chronic and progressive bone resorption following tooth loss. It causes deterioration of the oral environments and leads to the pathogenesis of various systemic diseases. However, the molecular mechanisms and risk factors for RRR progression are still unclear and controversial. In this study, we developed a tooth extraction model using mice for analyzing long-term morphological and gene expression changes in the alveolar bone. We further applied ovariectomy to this model to elucidate the effects of osteoporosis on RRR progression. As a result, the alveolar bone loss was biphasic and consisted of rapid loss in the early stages and subsequently slow and sustained bone loss over a long period. Histological analysis indicated that ovariectomy prolonged the activation of osteoclasts in the alveolar bone. Furthermore, the expressions of Tnfsf11 and Sema4d kept increasing for a long time in OVX mice. Administration of neutralization antibodies for receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL) effectively suppressed RRR. Similarly, inhibition of Semaphorin 4D (Sema4D) also improved alveolar bone loss. This study demonstrated that reduced ovarian function may be a risk factor for RRR and that RANKL and Sema4D suppression are potential treatments.

Abstract
Aim The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of autologous platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) alone and PRF loaded with SIM on peri-implant bone changes and implant stability in patients undergoing implant rehabilitation. Settings and Design This was a nonrandomized controlled split-mouth study. Materials and Methods The study included 8 males between the ages of 45 and 60 years. Each patient received two implants, one on each side of the arch. One side was treated with PRF alone and the other side with PRF loaded with SIM at the time of osteotomy. A cone-beam computed tomography was used to evaluate bone changes around the insertion of implant sites at 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. The secondary outcome included measuring implant stability using Osstell device at baseline and 3 months postinsertion. To compare groups at different time periods, data were examined using a two-way analysis of variance. Statistical Analysis Used The results were compared between the groups using a two-way analysis of variance, followed by a post hoc Bonferroni test. To examine total bone changes and stability comparisons between the two groups at the end of the trial, an unpaired t-test was utilized. Results The mean crestal bone-level changes in the SIM/PRF group were significantly lower than the PRF group, with a mean shift of 0.9788 ± 0.04853 versus 1.356 ± 0.0434, respectively (P < 0.0001). There was no significant difference between the two groups in implant stability. Conclusion Peri-implant application of SIM/PRF resulted in less bone changes than PRF alone, which may prove to be beneficial for the long-term success of implants. SIM showed promising results in limiting peri-implant bone resorption providing new clinical application for SIM in dental implant rehabilitation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Evaluate circumferential bone level and morphological alterations in the posterior mandibular ridge of atrophic (AP) and non-atrophic (NAP) patients using implant-retained mandibular overdentures (MO) over 3 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-six edentulous patients categorized according to mandibular atrophy (AP = 13/NAP = 13) received two narrow diameter implants (Facility, 2.9 × 10 mm) in the anterior region of mandible. The vertical and horizontal bone level was measured along with bone remodeling at 4 distances from the mental foramen in the posterior region of the mandible (L1-L4) via CBCT. RESULTS NAP showed significantly higher total height and medullary height in all posterior regions at 1 and 3 years (p ≤ 0.01). Cortical height and width were significantly higher (p ≤ 0.05) in this group at distances L1 and L4, respectively, in year 1. NAP shows a significantly higher % of medullary height at distances L1 (p ≤ 0.05), L2 (p ≤ 0.01), and L3 (p ≤ 0.05) after 1 year, and at all distances (p ≤ 0.05) after 3 years. Bone remodeling in the groups differed significantly (p ≤ 0.05) in terms of cortical width and % medullary width at L3. CONCLUSION AP and NAP showed similar vertical and horizontal bone level. Bone resorption in the posterior ridge was stabilized by MO over 3 years; however, AP are more susceptible to the long-term substitution of medullary bone by cortical bone. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This study is the first to longitudinally evaluate bone dimensions in atrophic and non-atrophic two-implant MO users by CBCT and revealed that MO is a predictable treatment based on the stabilization of the posterior bone resorption.

Factors associated with edentulous patients' willingness about implant-supported complete denture: a multivariate analysis. Clin Oral Investig 2021; 26:1835-1842. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the factors influencing edentulous patients' willingness about mandibular implant-supported complete denture. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was carried out with 117 bimaxillary edentulous patients wearing removable complete dentures (CDs). Patients were assessed concerning denture-related items (number of previous mandibular CDs, previous denture wearing period, dentures maker professional, and regular wearing of previous mandibular dentures) and individual-related aspects, such as mandibular edentulousness period, mandibular bone height, and willingness to the use of mandibular implant-supported complete denture. Masticatory performance was evaluated by the median particle diameter. Mandibular bone height and satisfaction were assessed using a validated method. The Chi-square test was used for data analysis and prevalence ratios were adjusted by using multivariate Poisson regression, both with 95% confidence interval. RESULTS A total of 78 participants (66.7%) were interested in mandibular implant-supported overdenture (mean age 65.33 ± 9.49). Masticatory performance was not influenced by choosing mandibular implant-supported complete denture. The preference about mandibular implant-supported complete denture was correlated with longer mandibular complete denture experience (p = 0.021) and it was significantly associated with dissatisfaction about retention (p = 0.005). CONCLUSION Previous experience with mandibular complete dentures and dissatisfaction about retention influence the willingness about mandibular implant-supported overdenture. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Many factors are associated with rehabilitation preferences for edentulous patients and mandibular implant-supported complete denture is one of the available alternatives. Therefore, this study has demonstrated the factors influencing the decision to replace a mandibular conventional complete denture by dental implant treatment based on patient's outcomes. Such finding may be considered as a relevant aspect towards shared decision-making for prosthodontic rehabilitation of edentulous patients.

Abstract
The mixture level of gum samples consisting of two colours can be assessed visually, using the electronic colorimetric method, employing digital image processing techniques and specially designed software. The study investigates the possibility of an alternative method called "digital texture image analysis" (DTIA) to assess improvement of masticatory efficiency in denture wearers. The objectives were i) to evaluate whether DTIA discriminates changes in the colour mixing ability within a group over time; ii) to determine whether DTIA can be used to detect improvement in chewing ability; iii) to select the most appropriate DTIA feature that sufficiently describes masticatory efficiency in CDs wearers. The study was designed as an intra-individual evaluation of masticatory efficiency, which was assessed in participants with new dentures in three follow-up times. A set of four texture features was used in the current study. Uniformity, Contrast, Homogeneity and Entropy of the obtained chewing-gum samples were correlated to the degree of gum comminution. A statistically significant difference in masticatory efficiency was observed based on the values of the analysed DTIA variables of gum samples-Uniformity, Contrast, Homogeneity, and Entropy-have changed in the participants during the observation period. The improvement of the masticatory function in relation to the mixing ability of two-coloured chewing gum could be traced by monitoring changes in the values of DTIA variables. The most increasement of masticatory efficiency was observed by monitoring DTIA parameters such as contrast, and homogeneity.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Clinical studies regarding satisfaction and occlusal forces with the complete denture in relation to the menopause are sparse. PURPOSE The purpose of this clinical study was to compare satisfaction levels and occlusal force with complete dentures in premenopausal and postmenopausal Indian women. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty premenopausal (group pre-MP) and 20 postmenopausal (group post-MP) completely edentulous participants were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, and estradiol levels were measured. Complete dentures were delivered to all participants following standard fabrication and insertion protocols. Three months after denture insertion, when participants were free of postinsertion complaints, satisfaction level (by using a valid and reliable questionnaire), depression level by using the Patient Health Questionnaire, (PHQ-9) and occlusal force (with a gnathodynamometer) were measured. The obtained data of all parameters were tabulated and compared by using a statistical software program (α=.05). RESULTS For questions pertaining to the overall satisfaction of maxillary and mandibular dentures, the 2 study groups encountered a significant difference with the premenopausal group showing significantly higher satisfaction levels (P<.001). Depression scores in the postmenopausal women group were significantly higher than those of the premenopausal women group (P<.001). A negative correlation was found between the overall satisfaction with complete dentures and depression levels in the participants indicating decreased overall satisfaction with increasing depression levels in participants (rho=-0.698). The premenopausal group recorded significantly higher estradiol levels than the postmenopausal group (P<.001). Mean occlusal force with complete dentures in the premenopausal women group was significantly higher than that of the postmenopausal women group (P<.001). A positive correlation was found between the estradiol levels and occlusal forces in the participants indicating that with decreasing estradiol levels, the occlusal forces decrease in the participants (r=0.740). CONCLUSION Satisfaction levels and occlusal force with complete dentures were significantly higher in premenopausal women group than in the postmenopausal group.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We present here a literature review focusing on the repercussions of osteoporosis on the oral and maxillofacial complex. Osteoporosis is a silent metabolic disorder characterized by reduced bone mineral density (BMD), which can lead to bone fractures, particularly affecting elderly women. The prevalence of this disease has increased significantly worldwide, and since it accelerates bone resorption also in the jaw bones, some attention has been paid to possible oral and maxillofacial manifestations. MATERIALS AND METHODS The databases PubMed and Google Scholar were searched for reports of oral and maxillofacial changes related to osteoporosis. RESULTS Several parameters evaluating bone changes in panoramic radiography have been proposed to estimate osteoporosis-related BMD loss, but they tend to warn about the possibility of osteoporosis, rather than being diagnostic criteria. Meanwhile, it seems that osteoporosis-related BMD loss could delay alveolar bone healing and potentiate bone loss in periodontal disease. CONCLUSION Even though orofacial bones are not compromised by osteoporosis as much as the axial/appendicular skeleton, a regular dental follow-up of osteoporotic patients is advised, especially in the case of periodontal disease and maxillofacial surgery. Further controlled longitudinal studies considering the site-specificity of osteogenesis would be helpful regarding this issue.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The period of functional adaptation to a new conventional complete denture embraces many transitory issues, and this period is directly related to the rehabilitation success. OBJECTIVE This clinical trial evaluated the influence of the height of mandibular ridge on the masticatory function of complete denture (CD) wearers during the adaptation period. METHODOLOGY A total of 28 individuals wearing new CDs (NR, n=14, normal mandibular ridges, 64±12.5 years, 9 female; RR, n=14, resorbed mandibular ridges, 69±6.8 years, 9 female) were assessed at 24 hours, 30 days, three months and six months after the insertion of the CDs for masticatory performance (MP, sieves method), satisfaction with CDs (questionnaire) and maximum occlusal bite force (MOBF) (gnatodynamometer). The classification of the mandibular ridges followed the Kapur index. Data of MP and MOBF were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and satisfaction with CDs was analyzed by Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE), α=.05. RESULTS Participants with NR presented better masticatory performance (p=.000 - NR 30.25±9.93%, RR 12.41±7.17%), general satisfaction (p=.047), retention of mandibular denture (p=.001), chewing ability (p=.037), and comfort of wearing a mandibular denture (p=.000). Regardless of the mandibular ridge, MP (p=.000) was higher at three (21.26±12.07%) and six months (24.25±12.26%) in comparison to 24 hours (18.09±10.89%), the MOBF (p=.000) was higher at three months (78.50±6.49 N) compared to 24 hours (57.34±5.55 N) and 30 days (62.72±5.97 N), and the comfort of wearing a mandibular denture (p=.002) at three months (1.61 ± 0.07) was greater than 24 hours (1.29±0.10) and 30 days (1.36±10). CONCLUSIONS The study suggests that the participants with NR have higher MP and satisfaction with their CD, regardless of the follow-up period after the insertion of the new CD. After subjects received the CD, a period of 3 months was necessary for achieving better achievement MOBF, MP, and self-perceived comfort with the mandibular denture, regardless of the height of the mandibular ridge.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study determined whether implant surfaces that promote osseointegration in normal rats can promote osseointegration in osteoporotic rats without pharmacologic intervention. MATERIALS AND METHODS Virgin female 8-month-old CD Sprague Dawley rats (N = 25) were ovariectomized. At 6 weeks, microstructured/non-nanostructured/hydrophobic, microstructured/nanostructured/hydrophobic, or microstructured/nanostructured/hydrophilic Ti implants (Ø2.5 × 3.5 mm; Institut Straumann AG, Basel, Switzerland) were placed in the distal metaphysis of each femur. At 28 days, bone quality and implant osseointegration were assessed using microCT, histomorphometrics, and removal torque values (RTVs). Calvarial osteoblasts were isolated and cultured for 7 days on Ø15 mm Ti disks processed to exhibit similar surface characteristics as the implants used for the in vivo studies. The phenotype was assessed by measuring the production of osteocalcin, osteoprotegerin, osteopontin, BMP2, VEGF, and RANKL. RESULTS Microstructured/nanostructured/hydrophilic implants promoted increased bone-to-implant contact and RTVs in vivo and increased osteoblastic marker production in vitro compared to microstructured/non-nanostructured/hydrophobic and microstructured/nanostructured/hydrophobic implants, suggesting that osseointegration occurs in osteoporotic animals, and implant surface properties improve its rate. CONCLUSIONS Although all modified implants were able to osseointegrate in rats with OVX-induced osteoporosis without pharmacologic intervention, the degree of osseointegration was greater around microstructured/nanostructured/hydrophilic implant surfaces. These results suggest that when appropriate microstructure is present, hydrophilicity has a greater influence on Ti implant osseointegration compared to nanostructures. Moreover, modified implant surfaces can exert their control over the altered bone turnover observed in osteoporotic patients to stimulate functional osseointegration. These results provide critical insight for developing implants with improved osseointegration in patients with metabolic disorders of bone remodeling.

Abstract
Soft denture liners and tissue conditioners are widely used for the denture patients to cushion masticatory force and condition abused tissues, respectively. This study assessed methods for the evaluation of the viscoelasticity and glass transition temperature (Tg) of the silicone permanent soft liner, acrylic permanent soft liner, and tissue conditioner. Three rheological parameters of storage modulus (E'), loss modulus (E''), and loss tangent ([Formula: see text]), Tg, and hardness were determined using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and the Shore A0 hardness test. Five specimens were measured for each material. The time-temperature superposition principle was applied to produce master curves of E', E'', and [Formula: see text] for the tested materials at a reference temperature of 37 °C. The acrylic permanent soft liner and tissue conditioner exhibited viscoelastic behavior and sensitivity to frequency, especially at lower frequencies. The silicone permanent soft liner showed elastic behavior and was frequency-independent. Tg for the acrylic permanent soft liner was higher than that for the tissue conditioner, which in turn was higher than that for the silicone permanent soft liner for both DMA and DSC. In DMA, a higher frequency led to higher Tg values. A positive linear relationship was found between Shore A0 hardness and E' values, but not E'' and [Formula: see text] values. Shore hardness reflects elasticity, but not viscosity. The results of the present study can be used to improve methods for evaluating the viscoelasticity and Tg of soft denture liners and tissue conditioners.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Whether masticatory efficiency and electromyographic activity are influenced by type of artificial teeth and food is unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this clinical study was to evaluate the influence of extension base removable partial dentures (RPDs) with different cusp angles: anatomic (33 degrees), semianatomic (20 degrees), and nonanatomic (0 degrees) teeth on masticatory efficiency and muscle activity during the mastication of test foods with different textures. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twelve participants with RPDs were selected to perform masticatory efficiency and electromyographic tests. Surface electromyograms (EMGs) were used to record the activities of the masseter and temporalis muscles during the mastication of different types of test foods. The maximal voltage and duration were measured on the integrated EMG signal in each muscle during food mastication, and the mean reading of both sides was then recorded. Analysis of variance and the Tukey post hoc test were used to perform statistical analyses (α=.05). RESULTS The masticatory efficiency of RPDs with nonanatomic teeth was significantly inferior to that of RPDs with anatomic and semianatomic teeth (P<.05). However, masticatory efficiency did not differ between anatomic and semianatomic teeth (P>.05). Also, muscle activity (according to EMG) with RPDs with NA teeth was significantly higher than that with anatomic and semianatomic teeth (P<.05). CONCLUSIONS RPDs with NA teeth were associated with higher EMG muscle activity and reduced masticatory efficiency than anatomic or semianatomic teeth.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review summarizes recent evidence on the impact of osteoporosis on periodontonlogy and implant dentistry, prevalence of diseases, pathophysiology and treatment outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS Patients with osteoporosis should be advised about the importance of returning for periodical periodontal maintenance as inadequate oral care may lead to a faster development of periodontitis. There is no definitive information on the development of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw associated with dental implant therapy. Patients presenting severe periodontitis, undergoing intravenous bisphosphonate therapy (for long-term periods) and submitted to more invasive periodontal/peri-implant surgical procedures (that can promote superior dentoalveolar surgical trauma) might be advised about the possibility of developing bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw following dental therapy. Thus, individualized risk evaluation must be undertaken by both the medical and dental teams prior to any dental treatment. SUMMARY The most recent literature on the impact of osteoporosis on the periodontal and peri-implant tissues was reviewed to emphasize the importance of oral hygiene measures, and the combined medical/dental assessment of importance when osteoporotic patients are in need of dentoalveolar surgical procedures (e.g. tooth extraction and dental implant placement).

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the influence of time on masticatory efficiency and muscular activity during mastication of different types of test foods in participants fitted with a lower bilateral free-end saddle removable partial denture (RPD) with wide or narrow teeth. METHODS Thirty-six participants consented to undergo evaluation of their masticatory efficiency and recording of their muscular activity, while they wore an RPD with a unified bilateral design, during mastication of different types of test foods. The width of the artificial teeth was changed as follows. Initially (A), the length was adjusted so that the distal end of the mandibular second molars occluded with the distal end of the maxillary second molar (buccolingual width of 7-8 mm). Next (B), the width was decreased to half the maxillary second molars (buccolingual width of only 5 mm). A statistical analysis was performed using SAS software. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed followed by Duncan's multiple range tests. RESULTS At the 2-month follow-up visit, wider teeth demonstrated greater masticatory efficiency than narrower teeth. However, after 4 months, no significant differences were observed between the two tooth widths. No significant differences in muscular activity were observed. CONCLUSION A reduction of the occlusal table width in free-end saddle RPDs resulted in decreased masticatory efficiency 2 months after denture fabrication, but there was no significant difference in muscular activity between narrow and wide teeth. However, after 4 months, the masticatory efficiency of the participants with narrower teeth improved without any changes in muscular activity.

How these muscles are affected by partial removable dental prostheses (PRDPs) with different cusp angles is unknown. PURPOSE The purpose of this clinical study was to evaluate the influence of different cusp angles, with anatomic (33 degrees), semianatomic (20 degrees), and nonanatomic teeth (0 degree), on the masticatory efficiency and muscular activity of participants receiving mandibular bilateral distal PRDPs. MATERIAL AND METHODS Fifteen participants consented to the evaluation of masticatory efficiency and electromyographic (EMG) activity with a PRDP with a unified bilateral design. The cusp angles of the artificial teeth were randomly changed from anatomic (33 degrees), semianatomic (20 degrees), and nonanatomic teeth (0 degree). Masticatory efficiency was evaluated by recording 5 parameters, including number of strokes, and time of mastication while the EMG activities of the masseter and temporalis muscles, measured using surface electromyography. The data were analyzed with 1-way ANOVA and the Tukey multiple post hoc test with statistical software (α=.05). RESULTS With regard to masticatory efficiency, PRDPs with anatomic and semianatomic teeth exhibited higher masticatory efficiency than those with nonanatomic teeth, whereas no significant differences were found between PRDPs with anatomic and semianatomic teeth. With respect to EMG activity, the least EMG activity was observed in PRDPs with anatomic teeth, whereas the highest activity was observed with nonanatomic teeth. No significant differences were found between the effect of PRDPs with anatomic and semianatomic teeth on masseter activity. CONCLUSIONS Changing the cusp angle from 33 to 20 degrees in PRDPs did not influence the masticatory efficiency or the EMG activity of the masseters. However, it did lead to increased EMG activities of the temporalis muscle. PRDPs with nonanatomic teeth were associated with a significant decrease in masticatory efficiency accompanied by a significant increase in EMG activity.

Abstract
Calcium and other trace mineral supplements have previously demonstrated to safely improve bone quality. We hypothesize that our novel calcium-phosphate based biomaterial (SBM) preserves and promotes mandibular bone formation in male and female rats on mineral deficient diet (MD). Sixty Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to receive one of three diets (n = 10): basic diet (BD), MD or mineral deficient diet with 2% SBM. Rats were sacrificed after 6 months. Micro-computed tomography (µCT) was used to evaluate bone volume and 3D-microarchitecture while microradiography (Faxitron) was used to measure bone mineral density from different sections of the mandible. Results showed that bone quality varied with region, gender and diet. MD reduced bone mineral density (BMD) and volume and increased porosity. SBM preserved BMD and bone mineral content (BMC) in the alveolar bone and condyle in both genders. In the alveolar crest and mandibular body, while preserving more bone in males, SBM also significantly supplemented female bone. Results indicate that mineral deficiency leads to low bone mass in skeletally immature rats, comparatively more in males. Furthermore, SBM administered as a dietary supplement was effective in preventing mandibular bone loss in all subjects. This study suggests that the SBM preparation has potential use in minimizing low peak bone mass induced by mineral deficiency and related bone loss irrespective of gender. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract
18F-fluoride positron emission tomography (PET) can identify subtle functional variation prior to the major structural change detectable by X-ray. This study aims to investigate the mechanobiological bone reaction around the abutment tooth and in the residual ridge, induced by insertion of removable partial denture (RPD) within two different groups of patients: patients without denture experience (Group 1) and patients with denture experience before (Group 2), using 18F-fluoride PET imaging technique. 18F-fluoride PET/computerised tomography (CT) scan was performed to examine the bone metabolic change in mandible before and after the RPD treatment. Region of interests (ROIs) were placed in alveolar bone around abutment tooth and in residual bone beneath the RPD. Standardised uptake value (SUV), reflecting the accumulation of 18F-fluoride, was measured for each ROI. In all subjects of Group 1, SUVs after insertion were higher than before in both alveolar bone and residual bone, while there was less significant change in SUV in subjects of Group 2. This study demonstrated using longitudinal 18F-fluoride PET scans to effectively examine the bone metabolic change in mandible induced by occlusal loading after RPD insertion. Using this technique, within the six subjects in this study, it was shown that bone metabolism around abutment tooth and residual ridge increased after RPD insertion in case of first-time denture user, while there was no big change in the patient with experience of denture before. This study revealed the effectiveness of applying PET to evaluate bone metabolic activity as mechanobiological reaction.

Abstract
Estimating adult age at death in skeletal remains is problematic, particularly in older adults. Molar wear is arguably the most reliable ageing technique for palaeopopulations, but many older adult skeletons have lost their molar teeth ante mortem, precluding its application. Resorption of the alveolar process occurs following tooth loss, and this appears to continue for a prolonged period. The current work investigates the relationship of this process to individual age in a nineteenth century AD European archaeological skeletal series of known age at death (N = 92 individuals), and discusses its potential as an age indicator. Mandibular corpus height was measured at the different molar positions. In females, reduction of corpus height with age was found at molar positions showing ante mortem loss. In both sexes, a relationship was found between age and a simple composite measure of corpus height in the molar region in those showing ante mortem loss of one or more mandibular molars. The correlation was stronger in females (r = -0.74) than in males (r = -0.49), appeared approximately linear, and continued into the ninth decade, the oldest age group in the study material. The results suggest that investigation of height of the posterior part of the mandibular corpus as a skeletal age indicator for individuals that have lost one or more molar teeth is merited in other palaeopopulations.

Abstract
PURPOSE In contemporary implant dentistry, bone mineral density (BMD) of the jaws is a patient-associated prognostic factor. The aim of this study was to compare the mandibular body BMD of dentate and edentulous patients using the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 39 patients, 20 dentate and 19 edentulous, were included in this cross-sectional study. Mandibular body BMD was measured using the DXA technique. The variables were normally distributed; thus, the independent samples t-test was used for the determination of statistical significance between the dentate and edentulous groups (age, body mass index [BMI], DXA). Chi-square test was performed for identification of the gender differences between the groups. The Pearson correlation analysis was used to analyze the relationship between age, BMI, and mandibular body BMD. Note that p < 0.01 was accepted as the significance level. RESULTS There was no statistically significant difference between the dentate and edentulous groups in matching variables (age, BMI, and gender) (p > 0.01). There was a statistically significant difference regarding the mandibular body BMD in the dentate and edentulous group (p < 0.01) controlling for age, gender, and BMI. The edentulous group patients had higher mandibular body BMD values (1.27 ± 0.31 g/cm(2)) than those in the dentate group (0.94 ± 0.22 g/cm(2)). CONCLUSION Comparison of the mandibular body BMD revealed that dentate patients had less dense bone than the edentulous patients. Further investigations are needed to determine the BMD of the jaws in different regions and for different systemic conditions.
