Abstract
The Fundão Dam failure has been the most significant environmental disaster in Brazil. The catastrophe released large amounts of mining waste into the environment, including toxic metals/metalloids, which are recognized to induce carcinogenic effects. The urinary levels of 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8OHdG), a widely accepted oxidative stress and carcinogenesis biomarker, provide a potential tool for assessing the disaster's health implications. This study investigated the association between urinary levels of some toxic metals/metalloids and 8OHdG in Brazilian individuals living in areas affected by the Fundão dam failure. Urinary concentrations of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), nickel (Ni), and lead (Pb) were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, while 8OHdG was analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Non-parametric bootstrap regression was used to estimate the associations between the urinary levels of toxic elements and 8OHdG. The results showed that except for Hg, urinary concentrations of all metals/metalloids analyzed here exceeded the reference ranges for the Brazilian population. The regression analysis revealed that As (0.337; CI 95%: 0.203; 0.474), Cd (0.268; CI 95%: 0.036; 0.520), and Ni (0.296; CI 950.108; 0.469) were positively associated with creatinine-adjusted urinary 8OHdG levels. Associations were not found for Hg (0.0122; CI 95%: -0.155; 0.183) and Pb (0.201; CI 95%: -0.040; 0.498). The current findings suggest that high exposure to toxic metals/metalloids might increase 8OHdG levels with potential adverse health effects. This study is the first one in which the relationship between toxic metals/metalloids and oxidative stress biomarkers is investigated in populations affected by environmental disasters. Further prospective studies are necessary to monitor exposure levels and explore additional health impacts.

Abstract
Concentrations of metals and metalloids derived mainly from anthropogenic activities have increased considerably in the environment. Metals might be associated with increase reactive oxygen species (ROS) damage, potentially related to several health outcomes. This study has recruited 200 adult participants, including 110 males and 90 females in Shiraz (Iran), to investigate the relationship between chronic exposure to metals and ROS damage by analyzing malondialdehyde (MDA) and 8-Oxo-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) concentrations, and has evaluated the associations between chronic metal exposure and ROS damage using regression analysis. Our findings showed participants are chronically exposed to elevate As, Ni, Hg, and Pb levels. The mean urinary concentrations of 8-OHdG and MDA were 3.8 ± 2.35 and 214 ± 134 µg/g creatinine, respectively. This study shows that most heavy metals are correlated with urinary ROS biomarkers (R ranges 0.19 to 0.64). In addition, regression analysis accounting for other confounding factors such as sex, age, smoking status, and teeth filling with amalgam highlights that Al, Cu, Si and Sn are associated with 8-OHdG concentrations, while an association between Cr and MDA and 8-OHdG is suggested. Smoking cigarettes and water-pipe is considered a significant contributory factor for both ROS biomarkers (MDA and 8-OHdG).

Abstract
Objectives To determine if urinary biomarkers of effect and potential harm are elevated in electronic cigarette users compared with non-smokers and if elevation correlates with increased concentrations of metals in urine. Study design and setting This was a cross-sectional study of biomarkers of exposure, effect and potential harm in urine from non-smokers (n=20), electronic cigarette users (n=20) and cigarette smokers (n=13). Participant’s screening and urine collection were performed at the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, and biomarker analysis and metal analysis were performed at the University of California, Riverside. Results Metallothionein was significantly elevated in the electronic cigarette group (3761±3932 pg/mg) compared with the non-smokers (1129±1294 pg/mg, p=0.05). 8-OHdG (8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine) was significantly elevated in electronic cigarette users (442.8±300.7 ng/mg) versus non-smokers (221.6±157.8 ng/mg, p=0.01). 8-Isoprostane showed a significant increase in electronic cigarette users (750.8±433 pg/mg) versus non-smokers (411.2±287.4 pg/mg, p=0.03). Linear regression analysis in the electronic cigarette group showed a significant correlation between cotinine and total metal concentration; total metal concentration and metallothionein; cotinine and oxidative DNA damage; and total metal concentration and oxidative DNA damage. Zinc was significantly elevated in the electronic cigarette users (584.5±826.6 µg/g) compared with non-smokers (413.6±233.7 µg/g, p=0.03). Linear regression analysis showed a significant correlation between urinary zinc concentration and 8-OHdG in the electronic cigarette users. Conclusions This study is the first to investigate biomarkers of potential harm and effect in electronic cigarette users and to show a linkage to metal exposure. The biomarker levels in electronic cigarette users were similar to (and not lower than) cigarette smokers. In electronic cigarette users, there was a link to elevated total metal exposure and oxidative DNA damage. Specifically, our results demonstrate that zinc concentration was correlated to oxidative DNA damage.

Arsenic metabolism differs between child and adult patients during acute arsenic poisoning. Toxicol Appl Pharmacol 2020; 410:115352. Abstract
Epidemiological studies on chronic arsenic poisoning have clarified the relationship between various adverse effects and methylation efficiency or methylation capacity. However, no study has similarly investigated such effects on patients with acute arsenic poisoning. In the present work, we studied 61 patients with acute oral arsenic poisoning occurring after consumption of an arsenic trioxide-laced meal (curry soup). The cohort included children (defined as under 15 year old [y/o], n = 22) and adults (over 16 y/o, n = 39) whose urinary arsenic profiles were analyzed. None of these patients had received treatment with chelating agents. The estimated median (IQR) arsenic intake was 64.5 mg (48.3-80.5 mg) in children and 76.0 mg (56.0-91.0 mg) in adults, and these values were not significantly different. Symptoms of poisoning in children improved approximately 1 week after hospitalization. However, the symptoms in most adults deteriorated with severe signs of arsenic poisoning. Urinary arsenic profiles of all the patients were analyzed to obtain the following information: % monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), % dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), second methylation ratio (DMA/MMA), and secondary methylation index (SMI, DMA/MMA + DMA). The levels of these parameters may help identify patients at risk for worsening symptoms. %MMA, an indicator of incomplete methylation, increased more in adults, who experienced more severe symptom progression, compared with children. In contrast, %DMA, which indicates more complete and efficient methylation, increased particularly in children with mild symptoms. Overall the present results indicate that children possess an excellent capacity for methylation (second methylation ratio) of arsenic to DMA and therefore, experience relatively less severe progression of symptomology during acute arsenic poisoning.

Abstract
Perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) has been widely used in production of many daily necessities because of its special nature. Althoughtoxic effects of PFDA to organisms have been reported, there is little research on the genotoxicity induced by oxidative stress of PFDA on the cellular and molecular levels simultaneously. Thus, we investigated the DNA oxidative damage caused by PFDA in mouse hepatocytes. On the cellular level, an increase in ROS content indicated that PFDA caused oxidative stress in mouse hepatocytes. In addition, after PFDA exposure, the comet assay confirmed DNA strand breaks and an increased 8-OHdG content demonstrated DNA oxidative damage. On the molecular level, the microenvironment of aromatic amino acids, skeleton and secondary structure of catalase (CAT) were varied after PFDA exposure and the enzyme activity was reduced because PFDA bound near the heme groups of CAT. Moreover, PFDA was shown to interact with DNA molecule by groove binding. This study suggests that PFDA can cause genotoxicity by inducing oxidative stress both on the cellular and molecular levels.

Abstract
Arsenic is a well-known toxic heavy metal that is naturally dispersed in groundwater. Whereas arsenic is widely accepted to be involved in oxidative stress damage, little is known about arsenic-induced oxidative damage in relationship to contaminated drinking water as a source. The aim of this study was to determine the association between arsenic exposure through drinking water and oxidative stress status by measuring levels of urinary 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) as a biomarker of oxidative stress damage in a Myanmar population. A questionnaire-based survey and drinking water and urine sampling (n = 198) were performed to assess the association between arsenic exposure and urinary 8-OHdG concentration in the Ayeyarwady Region, Myanmar. Urinary arsenic concentrations were significantly correlated with drinking water arsenic concentrations (Spearman's rho = 0.32, p < 0.001). Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that higher urinary arsenic concentrations were significantly associated with higher 8-OHdG concentrations (coefficient = 0.09, 95% confidence interval, 0.03 - 0.15; p = 0.002). The present study identified that exposure to arsenic through drinking water could induce an increase in the urinary 8-OHdG concentration, reflecting increased oxidative DNA damage. These findings provide evidence that may explain the role of arsenic-induced oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of arsenic-induced diseases including cancers.

Abstract
In this study we aimed at identifying main demographic, laboratory and environmental factors influencing the level of urinary biomarkers (DNA-derived 8-oxodG and lipid membrane-derived 8-isoprostane), and deriving their adjusted 95% reference intervals (RI) in a sample of healthy people from the general population. Data from 281 healthy subjects from the Gene Environment Interactions in Respiratory Diseases survey were used in this study. Generalized additive models for location, scale and shape (GAMLSS) were used to find determinants of the biomarkers among gender, age, season and distance from collection (DFC), and to predict their RI. The RI of the biomarkers stratified by season and adjusted for DFC showed a slight statistically significant decrease in the biomarkers at the increasing DFC in two seasons, except the 8-oxodG during the warm season: median levels at the min and max values of DFC were (ng/mgcreat) 7.0–1.1 in the cold and 3.9–3.9 in the warm seasons for 8-oxodG, 0.7–0.2 in the cold and 1.3–0.6 in the warm seasons for 8-isoprostane. Both the biomarkers should be evaluated in association with the DFC and season in large epidemiological studies. The (semi)parametric GAMLSS method is a useful and flexible technique, which makes it possible to estimate adjusted RI.

Abstract
Following the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in 2011, a number of evacuees were forced to live in temporary housing and suffered mental and physical stress. However, few reports have used objective or quantitative indicators to determine the evacuee's level of stress. The aim of the present study was to serially estimate the mental and physical stress of the evacuees from 2013 to 2015 by using the oxidative stress marker, urinary 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG). A total of 773 evacuees from Namie town in Fukushima prefecture participated in the study. In the first year, 486 evacuees participated (age, 62.8±18.2 years; male/female, 217/269). Of these, 127 continually participated in the study for 3 years (age, 69.5±13.5 years; males/female 52/75) and 18.1% had no chronic disease after the first year. Urine samples were collected once per year. Urinary 8-OHdG was measured using immunochromatography and corrected by the concentration of urinary creatinine. For all the participants examined each year, mean values of urinary 8-OHdG significantly increased over time. For the 127 continual participants, mean values of urinary 8-OHdG were significantly higher in 2014 and 2015 than those in 2013. Age, gender and presence of chronic disease did not significantly influence the 8-OHdG values, suggesting that the stress level of the evacuees was not associated with these factors. The stress level of the individuals increased with the length of time spent living in the temporary housing. The evacuees in radiation disasters have different stressors from other natural disasters, which may accelerate mental and physical stress.

Abstract
Exposure to heavy metals can cause renal injury, which has been well documented in occupational exposure. Studies of low exposure in the general population, however, are still scarce, particularly for vulnerable populations such as mothers and young children. This study evaluated exposure to heavy metals, and biomarkers of renal function and oxidative stress in 944 lactating mothers and their infants and investigated the role of the interaction between heavy metals and oxidative stress in altering renal function. Mother and infant urine samples were analyzed to measure mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) concentrations for determining body-burden exposure; N-acetyl-β-d-glucosaminidase (NAG), α1-microglobulin (α1-MG), albumin (ALB), and creatinine (Cr) concentrations for determining early renal injury; and 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations for determining oxidative stress. The median concentrclearlyations in mothers presented as μg/g Cr (infants as μg/l) for Hg, Cd, and Pb were 0.695 (0.716), 0.322 (0.343), and 3.97 (5.306) respectively. The mothers and their infants had clearly been exposed to heavy metals and had levels higher than the reference values reported for the general populations of USA, Germany, and Canada. Multiple regression analyses clearly demonstrated associations between urinary heavy metals in quartiles and several renal and oxidative biomarkers in mothers and to a lesser extent their infants. ß coefficients for urinary excretions of MDA, 8-OHdG, ALB, α1-MG, NAG, and Cr in mothers were high in the highest quartile of Hg (1.183-51.29μg/g Cr or 1.732-106.95μg/l), Cd (0.565-765.776μg/g Cr or 0.785-1347.0μg/l), and Pb (6.606-83.937μg/g Cr or 9.459-80.826μg/l), except Pb was not associated with ALB. Infants in the highest Pb quartile (9.293-263.098μg/l) had the highest ß coefficients of urinary excretion of MDA, 8-OHdG, ALB, NAG, and Cr. Significant increasing trend in biomarkers across the quartiles of the three metals was seen in both mothers and infants (ptrend <0.001). A receiver operating characteristic analysis supported the predictive abilities of the four renal biomarkers in discriminating between low versus high metal quartiles. The interaction between heavy metals and oxidative stress contributed to the high excretions of renal biomarkers, but the mechanism remains unclear. These findings add to the limited evidence that low exposure to heavy metals in the general population is associated with alterations in renal function that could eventually progress to renal damage if exposure continues and that children are more susceptible due to the immaturity of their body organs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We investigated whether human environmental exposure to chemicals that are labeled as (potential) carcinogens leads to increased (oxidative) damage to DNA in adolescents. MATERIAL AND METHODS Six hundred 14-15-year-old youngsters were recruited all over Flanders (Belgium) and in two areas with important industrial activities. DNA damage was assessed by alkaline and formamidopyrimidine DNA glycosylase (Fpg) modified comet assays in peripheral blood cells and analysis of urinary 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) levels. Personal exposure to potentially carcinogenic compounds was measured in urine, namely: chromium, cadmium, nickel, 1-hydroxypyrene as a proxy for exposure to other carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), t,t-muconic acid as a metabolite of benzene, 2,5-dichlorophenol (2,5-DCP), organophosphate pesticide metabolites, and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) metabolites. In blood, arsenic, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners 118 and 156, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) were analyzed. Levels of methylmercury (MeHg) were measured in hair. Multiple linear regression models were used to establish exposure-response relationships. RESULTS Biomarkers of exposure to PAHs and urinary chromium were associated with higher levels of both 8-OHdG in urine and DNA damage detected by the alkaline comet assay. Concentrations of 8-OHdG in urine increased in relation with increasing concentrations of urinary t,t-muconic acid, cadmium, nickel, 2,5-DCP, and DEHP metabolites. Increased concentrations of PFOA in blood were associated with higher levels of DNA damage measured by the alkaline comet assay, whereas DDT was associated in the same direction with the Fpg-modified comet assay. Inverse associations were observed between blood arsenic, hair MeHg, PCB 156 and HCB, and urinary 8-OHdG. The latter exposure biomarkers were also associated with higher fish intake. Urinary nickel and t,t-muconic acid were inversely associated with the alkaline comet assay. CONCLUSION This cross-sectional study found associations between current environmental exposure to (potential) human carcinogens in 14-15-year-old Flemish adolescents and short-term (oxidative) damage to DNA. Prospective follow-up will be required to investigate whether long-term effects may occur due to complex environmental exposures.

Abstract
Although 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) is a widely used promising biomarker of DNA damage, there are concerns about which tissues or body fluids should be sampled. The objective of this study is to evaluate the correlation of DNA oxidative damage biomarkers, 8-OHdG, between blood and urine and risk factors associated with 8OHdG. The study population was recruited from a baseline survey of a worksite lifestyle study including 92 office workers aged 23 to 60 years. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect information on personal characteristics. The plasma and urinary 8-OHdG was measured by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). In linear regression, a positive relation was found (p < 0.01) between the log-transformed plasma and urinary 8-OHdG levels adjusted for gender, age, BMI, and smoking status. Our findings showed that age, gender and smoking were significantly associated with plasma 8-OHdG, but not with urinary 8-OHdG. Our results suggest that there is a positive relation between the biomarkers of plasma (steady state DNA damage) and urinary 8-OHdG (total DNA damage). However, the plasma 8-OHdG is more sensitive than urinary 8-OHdG to detect increased oxidative damages induced by risk factors.

Abstract
8-Hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) is the most common biomarker of oxidative DNA damage, it is formed by chemical carcinogens and can be measured in any species. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) are suspected genotoxic carcinogens through induction of reactive oxygen species that are responsible for oxidative DNA damage. This study was conducted to investigate the in vitro genotoxicity of PFOA and PFNA in human lymphoblastoid (TK6) cell line. TK6 cells were exposed to PFOA at 0, 125, 250, and 500 ppm and PFNA at 125 and 250 ppm for 2 h. Single cell gel electrophoresis (comet assay) was used to measure DNA damage; at least 50 cells per sample were analyzed using comet Assay Software Project (CASP). 8-OHdG was measured in DNA of exposed cells using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-mass spectrometry (MS)/MS. Results showed that both PFOA and PFNA induced DNA damage indicated by increased tail length (DNA migration). The level of 8-OHdG was increased in a dose-dependent manner in both PFOA and PFNA exposure. We concluded that PFOA and PFNA induced DNA damage and the biomarker of oxidative DNA damage (8-OHdG) could be measured by HPLC-MS/MS. In addition, PFNA produced high level of 8-OHdG at concentrations lower than PFOA, this may indicate that PFNA is more potent genotoxicant for TK6 cells than PFOA.

Abstract
Oxidative stress to DNA from smoking was investigated in one randomized smoking cessation study and in 36 cohort studies from excretion of urinary 8-oxo-7-hydrodeoxyguanosine (8-oxodG). Meta-analysis of the 36 cohort studies showed smoking associated with a 15.7% (95% CL 11.0:20.3, p < 0.0001) increased oxidative stress to DNA, in agreement with the reduction of oxidative stress to DNA found in the smoking cessation study. Meta-analysis of the 22 studies that used chromatography methodology on 1709 persons showed a significant 29.3% increase in smokers (95% CL 17.3;41.3), but meta-analysis of 14 studies on 3668 persons using ELISA methodology showed a non-significant effect of 8.7% [95% CL -1.2;18.6]. Tobacco smoke induces oxidative damage to DNA; however, this is not detected with ELISA methodology. Currently, the use of existing ELISA methodology to measure urinary excretion of 8-oxo-7-hydrodeoxyguanosine cannot be recommended.

Abstract
Heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are predominate toxic constituents of particulate air pollution that may be related to the increased risk of cardiopulmonary events. We aim to investigate the effects of the toxic heavy metals (arsenic, As; cadmium, Cd; chromium, Cr; nickel, Ni; and lead, Pb), and their interactions with PAHs on oxidative stress among coke-oven workers. A total of 1333 male workers were recruited in this study. We determined their urinary levels of As, Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, twelve PAH metabolites, 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), and 8-iso-prostaglandin-F2α (8-iso-PGF2α). Multivariate linear regression models were used to analyze the effects of these metals and their interactions with PAHs on 8-OHdG and 8-iso-PGF2α levels. It was found that only urinary As and Ni showed marginal or significant positive linear dose-dependent effects on 8-OHdG in this study population, especially among smokers (β=0.103, P=0.073 and β=0.110, P=0.002, respectively). After stratifying all participants by the quartiles of ΣOH-PAH, all five metals showed linear association with 8-OHdG in the highest quartile subgroup (Q4) of ΣOH-PAHs. However, these five urinary metals showed significantly consistent linear associations with 8-iso-PGF2α in all subjects and each stratum. Urinary ΣOH-PAHs can significant modify the effects of heavy metals on oxidative stress, while co-exposure to both high levels of ΣOH-PAHs and heavy metals render the workers with highest 8-OHdG and 8-iso-PGF2α (all P(interaction)≤0.005). This study showed evidence on the interaction effects of heavy metals and PAHs on increasing the oxidative stress, and these results warrant further investigation in more longitudinal studies.

Abstract
Nearly half of the world's population is exposed to household air pollution (HAP) due to long hours spent in close proximity to unvented cooking fires. The effect of woodsmoke exposure on oxidative stress was examined by investigating the association between woodsmoke exposure and biomarkers of DNA oxidation (8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine [8-OHdG]) and lipid peroxidation (8-isoprostane) among control and intervention stove users. HAP exposure assessment was conducted within the framework of a community-randomized controlled trial of 51 communities in San Marcos Province, Cajamarca Region, Peru. The first morning urine voids after 48h HAP exposure assessment from a subset of 45 control and 39 intervention stove users were analyzed for 8-OHdG and 8-isoprostane. General linear models and correlation analyses were performed. Urinary oxidative stress biomarkers ranged from 11.2 to 2270.0μg/g creatinine (median: 132.6μg/g creatinine) for 8-OHdG and from 0.1 to 4.5μg/g creatinine (median: 0.8μg/g creatinine) for 8-isoprostane among all study subjects (n=84). After controlling for the effects of traffic in the community and eating food exposed to fire among all subjects, cooking time was weakly, but positively associated with urinary 8-OHdG (r=0.29, p=0.01, n=80). Subjects' real-time personal CO exposures were negatively associated with 8-OHdG, particularly the maximum 30-second CO exposure during the sampling period (r=-0.32, p=0.001, n=73). 48h time integrated personal PM2.5 was negatively, but marginally associated with urinary 8-isoprostane (r=-0.21, p=0.09, n=69) after controlling for the effect of distance of homes to the road. Urinary 8-isoprostane levels reported in the available literature are comparable to results found in the current study. However there were relatively high levels of urinary 8-OHdG compared to data in the available literature for 8-OHdG excretion. Results suggest a sustained systemic oxidative stress among these Peruvian women chronically exposed to wood smoke.

Abstract
As a sensitive biomarker, the level of 8-hydroxy-2`-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) indicates the extent of DNA oxidative damage of subject. However its determination in human urine is confounded by trace content and a complex matrix. In this study, a new approach of solid phase microextraction (SPME) coupled to capillary electrophoresis and electrochemical detection was developed with molecularly imprinted monolithic column as extraction sorbent. The tailor made monolith exhibited high extraction efficiency with the enrichment factor 73 for 8-OHdG owing to its special porous structure and inherent selectivity. Under optimal conditions, appreciable sensitivity had been achieved with a limit of detection of 2.61 nmol/L (signal/noise=3) and a limit of quantification of 8.63 nmol/L (signal/noise=10), respectively. As an alternative of precise 8-OHdG determination, wide range linearity had been achieved with 0.01-1.50 μmol/L and RSDs with 3.70% for migration time and 4.80% for peak current (10-1000 nmol/L). 106 samples with relative low extents of DNA oxidative damage were collected and analyzed which including coke plant workers, traffic policemen, taxi drivers and healthy students. Elevated urinary 8-OHdG excretions of subjects may correlate to working condition, occupational exposure, or lifestyle.

Abstract
Experimental studies indicate that exposure to woodsmoke could induce oxidative stress. However studies have not been conducted among the general population and specialized occupational groups despite the existence of elevated woodsmoke exposure situations. Therefore, we investigated whether there were across workshift changes in oxidative stress biomarkers among wildland firefighters who are occupationally exposed to elevated levels of woodsmoke. We collected pre- and post-workshift urine samples from 19 wildland firefighters before and after prescribed burns. We measured malondialdehyde (MDA) and 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-oxo-dG) in the samples, and analyzed whether there were cross-shift changes in their levels, and the relationships between the changes and the length of firefighting career, age of firefighter, and quantified workshift exposure to particulate matter. Overall no significant cross-shift change was observed for 8-oxodG or MDA in the urine samples of the firefighters. Changes in both biomarkers were also not associated with PM2.5, which was used as a marker of exposure. However, overall unadjusted geometric mean 8-oxo-dG levels in the samples (31 μg/g creatinine) was relatively higher compared to those measured in healthy individuals in many occupational or general population studies. Additionally, cross-shift changes in 8-oxo-dG excretion were dependent on the length of firefighting career (p=0.01) or age of the subject (p=0.01). Significant increases in 8-oxo-dG level from pre-shift to post-shift were observed for those who had been firefighters for 2 years or less. The results indicate that oxidative stress response measured as cross-shift changes in 8-oxo-dG may depend on age or the length of a firefighter's career. These results suggest the need to investigate the longer term health effects of cumulative exposure of woodsmoke exposure among wildland firefighters, because increased body burden of oxidative stress is a risk factor for many diseases and is theorized to be involved in aging.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Residents who lost land and houses due to disasterous heavy rainfall-related events on July 13, 2004 and the Chuetsu Earthquake on October 23, 2004 were moved to emergency temporary housing. The change in life style due to living under such conditions is assumed to increase oxidative stress level. In this study, we investigated the oxidative stress level in elderly residents of emergency temporary housing, and analyzed its association with lifestyle and body composition following these disasters. METHODS A noninvasive oxidative stress marker, urinary 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), and body composition were measured in 73 elderly residents of emergency temporary housing. RESULTS In the elderly female residents, the urinary 8-OHdG level tended to decrease with time after the disasters. 8-OHdG levels were slightly higher in females than males and significantly higher among those who exercised regularly compared to those who did not, particularly in females. A weak correlation was noted between the urinary 8-OHdG level and muscle ratio in females. CONCLUSIONS The in vivo oxidative stress level in our study cohort of elderly residents of emergency temporary housing changed following the change in life style, but remained within the normal range. The increase in oxidative stress levels of elderly females was related to menopause. A decrease in estrogen levels due to menopause inhibits its antioxidant effects, which increases 8-OHdG levels. Although it is difficult to determine, a decrease in daily stressors over time following the disaster could be a cause of the decrease in oxidative stress levels. We suggest that the close evaluation of the stress level of disaster victims is desirable, in combination with evidence of antioxidative substances and the psychosocial influence of suffering as a consequence of the disaster.

Abstract
Ochratoxin A is one of the most abundant food- contaminating mycotoxins in the world that is immunosuppressive, genotoxic, teratogenic and carcinogenic. Malondialdehyde is a naturally occurring product of lipid peroxidation that is mutagenic and carcinogenic. 8-Hydroxydeoxyguanosine is produced during the interaction of reactive oxygen species and DNA. In this study, Ochratoxin A, malondialdehyde and 8-Hydroxydeoxyguanosine levels of individuals in the study group were measured and results were correlated with each other. Additionally, the correlation of biomarker levels to smoking habit, alcohol and coffee consumption, age and gender of individuals was investigated. As a result of these assessments, a significant correlation was observed between Ochratoxin A exposures and malondialdehyde and 8-Hydroxydeoxyguanosine levels.

Abstract
Arsenic plays an important role in producing oxidative stress in cultured cells. To investigate the interaction between high oxidative stress and low arsenic methylation capacity on arsenic carcinogenesis, a case-control study was conducted to evaluate the relationship among the indices of oxidative stress, such as urinary 8-hydroxydeoxyquanine (8-OHdG), as well as plasma micronutrients and urinary arsenic profiles on urothelial carcinoma (UC) risk. Urinary 8-OHdG was measured using high-sensitivity enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. The urinary arsenic species were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography and hydride generator-atomic absorption spectrometry. Plasma micronutrient levels were analyzed using reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The present study showed a significant protective effect of plasma alpha-tocopherol on UC risk. Plasma alpha-tocopherol levels were significantly inversely related to urinary total arsenic concentrations and inorganic arsenic percentage (InAs%), and significantly positively related to dimethylarsinic acid percentage (DMA%). There were no correlations between plasma micronutrients and urinary 8-OHdG. Study participants with lower alpha-tocopherol and higher urinary total arsenic, higher InAs%, higher MMA%, and lower DMA% had a higher UC risk than those with higher alpha-tocopherol and lower urinary total arsenic, lower InAs%, lower MMA%, and higher DMA%. These results suggest that plasma alpha-tocopherol might modify the risk of inorganic arsenic-related UC.

Abstract
This study was aimed at defining the reference ranges for biomarkers of oxidized guanine in (2'-deoxy)ribonucleotides and nucleic acids from a large Italian sample. We recruited 300 healthy subjects (150 males; mean age 44.1±13.6years; 26% smokers) without any known exposure to occupational oxidizing agents. They were asked to provide a spot urine sample, on which the following markers were determined by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry: 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodGuo), 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanosine (8-oxoGuo), 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanine (8-oxoGua), and cotinine. The reference ranges, estimated as the 5th-95th percentiles of creatinine-normalized values (pmol/μmol(creat)) were 0.7-4.2, 0.9-4.7, and 5.6-120.7 for 8-oxodGuo, 8-oxoGuo, and 8-oxoGua, respectively. Oxidation biomarkers were correlated with one another (p<0.005) and with urinary creatinine (p<0.0001). Males excreted significantly higher concentrations of 8-oxoGua than females (p<0.0001). 8-OxoGua and 8-oxoGuo showed a positive association with age (p<0.001), also after stratification by gender. Multiple linear regression models including urinary creatinine concentration, age, and smoking habit as independent variables showed a significant effect of age, but not of smoking, on the levels of 8-oxoGuo in males (p<0.0001) and of both 8-oxoGuo and 8-oxoGua in females (p<0.0001). A preliminary assessment in a small group (n=25) of patients affected by advanced non-small-cell lung cancer and receiving platinum-based chemotherapy showed significantly higher values of both 8-oxoGuo and 8-oxodGuo (p<0.0001 for both) compared to the referent population.

Abstract
The association of serum arginase I with oxidative stress was evaluated cross-sectionally in a healthy population. The mean levels of serum arginase I in healthy people (n = 278) were 32.6 ± 22.3 ng/ml. Significant correlations of arginase I were observed with age, WBC, RBC, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), uric acid, body mass index (BMI) and urinary 8-isoprostane. Multiple regression analysis showed significant associations of arginase I with WBC, RBC, urinary 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), age, HbA1c and urinary 8-isoprostane. In the associations of arginase I with 8-OHdG, 8-isoprostane and HbA1c, confounding factors and lifestyle factors such as sex, old age, smoking and alcohol consumption were involved. It was concluded that serum arginase I was associated with oxidative stress and HbA1c in addition to age, WBC and RBC in healthy Japanese people and may become a new biomarker for early prediction of diabetes mellitus and other oxidative stress-related diseases.

Abstract
Widespread use of carbon nanotubes is predicted for future and concerns have been raised about their potential health effects. The present study determined the pulmonary response of mice to multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The MWCNT suspension in sterile phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) was introduced into mice lungs by oropharyngeal aspiration. Female C57Bl mice were treated with either 20 or 40 microg of MWCNTs in 40 microl PBS and control groups received equal volume of PBS. From each group, half of the mice were euthanized at day 1 and the remaining half at day 7 post treatment. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluids, serum, and lung tissue samples were analyzed for inflammatory and oxidative stress markers. The results showed significant cellular influx by a single exposure to MWCNTs. Yields of total cells and the number of polymorphonuclear leukocytes in BAL cells were significantly elevated in MWCNT-treated mice post-treatment days 1 and 7. Analysis of cell-free BAL fluids showed significantly increased levels of total proteins, lactate dehydrogenase, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-1beta, mucin, and surfactant protein-D (SP-D) in MWCNT-treated mice at day 1 post treatment. However, these biomarkers returned to basal levels by day 7 post exposure except mucin and SP-D. An increase in the urinary level of 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine in mice treated with MWCNT suggested systemic oxidative stress. Western analysis of lung tissue showed decreased levels of extracellular superoxide dismutase (SOD) protein in MWCNT-treated mice but copper/zinc and manganese SOD remained unchanged. It is concluded that a single treatment of MWCNT is capable of inducing cytotoxic and inflammatory response in the lungs of mice.

Abstract
This study investigated nucleic acid oxidation associated with exposure to benzene at low levels in 239 workers recruited among traffic policemen, taxi drivers and gasoline pump attendants of the city of Parma (Italy). Biomarkers of exposure, namely urinary t,t-muconic acid (t,t-MA) and S-phenylmercapturic acid (S-PMA), urinary cotinine, and urinary biomarkers of nucleic acid oxidation, namely 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodGuo), 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanosine (8-oxoGuo) and 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanine (8-oxoGua) were determined by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Relevant polymorphisms of NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase (NQO1), glutathione S-transferases M1-1 (GSTM1), T1-1 (GSTT1), and A1 (GSTA1) were characterized by polymerase chain reaction-based methods in a subgroup of subjects. Biomarkers of nucleic acid oxidation were correlated with each other (r> or =0.32, p<0.0001) and with exposure biomarkers (r> or =0.28, p<0.0001). Multiple linear regression models including age, sex and smoking habits as independent variables demonstrated that benzene exposure is associated with oxidation damage to nucleic acid, particularly to RNA (p<0.0001) and is modulated by the NQO1 polymorphism. The study confirmed a significant modulating effect of GSTM1 (p=0.010), GSTT1 (p=0.023) and GSTA1 (p=0.048) polymorphisms on S-PMA excretion, with a significant interaction between GSTM1 and both GSTT1 and GSTA1 (p=0.006 and p=0.037, respectively).

Abstract
Myeloperoxidase (MPO) generates reactive halogenating species that can modify DNA. The aim of this study was to investigate the formation of 8-halogenated 2'-deoxyguanosines (8- halo-dGs) during inflammatory events. 8-Bromo-2'-dG (8-BrdG) and 8-chloro-2'-dG (8-CldG) were generated by treatment of MPO with hydrogen peroxide at physiological concentrations of Cl(-) and Br(-). The formation of 8-halo-dGs with other oxidative stress biomarkers in lipopolysaccharide-treated rats was assessed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry and immunohistochemistry using a novel monoclonal antibody (mAb8B3) to 8-BrdG-conjugated keyhole limpet hemocyanin. The antibody recognized both 8-BrdG and 8-CldG. In the liver of lipopolysaccharide-treated rats, immunostaining for 8-halo-dGs, halogenated tyrosines, and MPO were increased at 8 h, whereas those of 8-oxo-2'-dG (8-OxodG) and 3-nitrotyrosine were increased at 24 h. Urinary excretion of both 8-CldG and 8-BrdG was also observed earlier than those of 8-OxodG and modified tyrosines (3-nitrotyrosine, 3-chlorotyrosine, and 3- bromotyrosine). Moreover, the levels of the 8-halo-dGs in urine from human diabetic patients were 8-fold higher than in healthy subjects (n = 10, healthy and diabetic, p < 0.0001), whereas there was a moderate difference in 8-OxodG between the two groups (p < 0.001). Interestingly, positive mAb8B3 antibody staining was observed in liver tissue from hepatocellular carcinoma patients but not in liver tissue from human cirrhosis patients. These data suggest that 8-halo-dGs may be potential biomarkers of early inflammation.

Abstract
Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is characterized by diffuse inflammation in the lung and resultant permeability edema. Polymyxin B-immobilized fiber (PMX-F) hemoperfusion is effective for sepsis-induced ARDS. High mobility group box-1 protein (HMGB1) is newly recognized as a proinflammatory cytokine. The aim of the study was to determine whether blood HMGB1 levels are increased in patients with ARDS and whether PMX-F treatment affects these levels. Subjects were 20 sepsis-induced patients with ARDS treated by PMX-F column and 20 age-matched healthy volunteers. Polymyxin B-immobilized fiber treatment was carried out twice at a rate of 100 ml/min for 2 hours. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures, the PaO2/FiO2 (PF) ratio and endotoxin, HMGB1, and urinary 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (OHdG) levels were measured before and after PMX-F treatment. Blood endotoxin levels, blood HMGB1 levels, and urinary 8-OHdG levels were significantly higher in patients with ARDS than in healthy volunteers. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures and the PF ratio increased significantly after PMX-F treatments. Polymyxin B-immobilized fiber treatment reduced blood endotoxin, blood HMGB1, and urinary 8-OHdG levels significantly. These data suggest that HMGB1 and oxidative stress play a role in the pathogenesis of ARDS and that PMX-F treatment may ameliorate increased blood HMGB1 and urinary 8-OHdG levels in patients with ARDS.

Abstract
The 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), an oxidized nucleoside of DNA, not only is a widely used biomarker for the measurement of endogenous oxidative DNA damage, but might also be a risk factor for many diseases including cancer. Elevated level of urinary 8-OHdG has been detected in patients with various malignancies. In the present study, the level of urinary 8-OHdG was examined in 116 Chinese children with acute leukemia (94 acute lymphoid leukemia, ALL, 22 acute myeloid leukemia, AML), and its correlation with urinary metal elements was investigated. Our result showed that the level of urinary 8-OHdG in children with acute leukemia before treatment was significantly elevated compared with that in normal controls (11.92 +/- 15.42 vs. 4.03 +/- 4.70 ng/mg creatinine, P < 0.05). In particular, urinary 8-OHdG was higher in children with acute leukemia aged under 3 years (20.86 +/- 21.75 ng/mg creatinine) than in those aged 3-15 years (8.09 +/- 9.65 ng/mg creatinine), whereas no differences were shown in terms of gender, parental smoking and education, household income, place of residence, and use of paracetamol. In addition, urinary 8-OHdG levels were similar among different subtypes of acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL) patients. Furthermore, linear regression analysis revealed a significant correlation between urinary 8-OHdG and urinary Cr, but not Fe or As, in group aged <3 years compared with group aged 3-15 years (P = 0.041), indicating that the metal elements may be involved in increasing urinary 8-OHdG level in younger children with acute leukemia. Our results suggest that children with acute leukemia undergo an increased risk of oxidative DNA damage, which may be correlated with high level of Cr exposure in Chinese children with acute leukemia.

Abstract
The urinary concentrations of 8-isoprostane and 8-hydroxy-2’-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), which are biomarkers of oxidative stress, were measured in 677 Japanese people without any diseases, and their correlations with lifestyle facotrs, lifestyle-related blood biochemical parameters, and dietary intake of antioxidative vitamins were investigated. The mean urinary concentration of 8-isoprostane and 8-OHdG was 0.58 ng/mg creatinine and 8.43 ng/mg creatinine, respectively. Mean urinary 8-isoprostane was significantly different in terms of age, gender, smoking and alcohol consumption but not different in terms of body mass index (BMI) and exercise. By multiple regression analysis, urinary 8-isoprostane was significantly influenced by smoking and age. On the other hand, mean urinary 8-OHdG showed differences only by age group. Multiple regression analysis revealed that urinary 8-OHdG was significantly influenced by age, smoking, body weight, levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (Hs-CRP) and low density lipoprotein-cholesterol in females, although it was significantly influenced by body weight in males. The present study shows that urinary 8-isoprostane is associated with lipid peroxidation related-lifestyles such as smoking, and urinary 8-OHdG is associated with arteriosclerosis related-factors such as Hs-CRP. Our findings suggest that 8-isoprostane and 8-OHdG appear to be prospective biomarkers for early prediction of lifestyle related-disease risk at the population level.

Abstract
UNLABELLED We sought to establish a causal relationship between oxidative stress and porphyria in patients and carriers. We reported changes in urinary porphyrin concentrations related to 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine. METHODS We measured urinary 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine concentration in porphyria patients and carriers with multifactorial inheritance as a possible marker of attack. The porphyria types included 10 patients with porphyria cutanea tarda, 5 with variegate porphyria, 8 with hereditary coproporphyria, 7 with congenital erythropoietic porphyria, 5 with erythropoietic protoporphyria, 5 with acute intermittent porphyria, 7 erythropoietic protoporphyria carriers, and 7 acute intermittent porphyria carriers. RESULTS Urinary porphyrin concentrations in these patients were significantly higher than those in healthy subjects (p<0.001). Urinary 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine concentrations were significantly high in dermatopathy porphyria types namely porphyria cutanea tarda (p<0.001), variegate porphyria (p<0.05), hereditary coproporphyria (p<0.05), congenital erythropoietic phyria (p<0.05), and erythropoietic protoporphyria (p<0.001). CONCLUSION These results reveal that urinary 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine concentration in cutis porphyria types is a good predictor of attack and abatement.

Abstract
Though oxidative stress is recognized as an important pathogenic mechanism of arsenic, and arsenic methylation capacity is suggested to be highly involved in arsenic-related diseases, the association of arsenic methylation capacity with arsenic-induced oxidative stress remains unclear. To explore oxidative stress and its association with arsenic methylation, cross-sectional studies were conducted among 208 high and 59 low arsenic-exposed subjects. Levels of urinary arsenic species [inorganic arsenic (iAs), monomethylated arsenic (MMA) and dimethylated arsenic (DMA)] were determined by hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry. Proportions of urinary arsenic species, the first methylation ratio (FMR) and the secondary methylation ratio (SMR) were used as indicators for arsenic methylation capacity. Urinary 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) concentrations were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. Reduced glutathione (GSH) levels and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in whole blood were determined to reflect anti-oxidative status. The high arsenic-exposed children and adults were significantly increased in urinary 8-OHdG concentrations but decreased in blood GSH levels compared with the low exposed children and adults. In multiple linear regression models, blood GSH levels and urinary 8-OHdG concentrations of arsenic-exposed children and adults showed strong associations with the levels of urinary arsenic species. Arsenic-exposed subjects in the lower and the upper quartiles of proportions of urinary arsenic species, FMR or SMR were significantly different in urinary 8-OHdG, blood GSH and SOD. The associations of arsenic methylation capacity with 8-OHdG, GSH and SOD were also observed in multivariate regression analyses. These results may provide linkage between arsenic methylation capacity and oxidative stress in humans and suggest that adverse health effects induced by arsenic are related to arsenic methylation through oxidative stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Reactive oxygen species produced either endogenously or exogenously can attack lipids, proteins and DNA in human cells and cause potentially deleterious consequences. In recent years, their role in the pathogenesis of lung cancer and the preventive effect of antioxidants have been studied extensively. In this study, our aim was to investigate the levels of 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8OHdG) and malondialdehyde as a marker for the effects of reactive oxygen species on DNA and lipids, the levels of antioxidant vitamins and the correlations between these oxidative stress markers and antioxidants in lung cancer. METHODS Serum malondialdehyde, beta-carotene, retinol, and vitamins C and E were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography methods in fasting blood samples and 8OHdG was measured by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in 24-h urine samples of patients with lung cancer (n=39) and healthy controls (n=31). RESULTS The levels of 8OHdG and malondialdehyde were significantly higher (p<0.05 and p<0.005, respectively) and beta-carotene, retinol, and vitamins C and E (p<0.0001, p<0.0001, p<0.0001, and p<0.05, respectively) were significantly lower in patients than in controls. There was a significantly positive correlation between 8OHdG and malondialdehyde (r=0.463, p=0.01) and a negative correlation between the levels of 8OHdG and retinol (r=-0.419, p=0.021) in the patient group. CONCLUSIONS Our results demonstrate that the oxidant/antioxidant balance was spoiled in favor of lipid peroxidation and DNA damage in lung cancer patients. Significant increases in the levels of malondialdehyde and 8OHdG and decreases in the levels of antioxidants suggest the possible involvement of oxidative stress in lung cancer.

Abstract
8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) is an oxidatively modified guanosine, which has been widely used as an oxidative DNA damage marker in various diseases. The present study aimed to determine urinary 8-OHdG in nephrolithiasis patients and evaluate its clinical significance. Thirty-six nephrolithiasis patients and 30 healthy subjects were recruited. Urine volume, creatinine, malondialdehyde, beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAG) activity and proteins were measured in 24 h urine samples. Urinary 8-OHdG was determined by competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Mineral composition of stones was analyzed using Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy. Nephrolithiasis patients excreted urinary 8-OHdG significantly higher than healthy controls. Urinary 8-OHdG levels compared among patients with calcium oxalate, struvite and uric acid stones were insignificantly different. The urinary NAG activity correlated positively with urinary 8-OHdG. Multiple linear regression showed that urinary NAG activity was an independent predictor of urinary 8-OHdG level. Receiver operating characteristic analysis revealed that the urinary 8-OHdG test was adequate for diagnosing nephrolithiasis. At 10 mug/g creatinine cutoff, the 8-OHdG test imparted high specificity (96.67%) and a positive predictive value (91.67%). In conclusion, this is the first report of elevated urinary 8-OHdG excretion in nephrolithiasis patients indicating increased oxidative DNA damage. Increased renal tubular damage was independently associated with elevated urinary 8-OHdG. Elevated urinary 8-OHdG levels adjunct with metabolic profile may be useful for identifying people at risk of stone development.

Abstract
This study investigated whether urinary 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), a biomarker of oxidative stress, was associated with indoor air quality for non-smokers in high-rise building offices. With informed consents, urine samples from 344 non-smoking employees in 86 offices were collected to determine 8-OHdG concentrations. The concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO(2)) and total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) in each office and outside of the building were simultaneously measured for eight office hours. The average workday difference between indoor and outdoor CO(2) concentrations (dCO(2)) was used as a surrogate measure of the ventilation efficiency for each office unit. The CO(2) levels in the offices ranged 467-2810ppm with a mean of 1170ppm, or 2.7 times higher than that in the outside air. The average urinary 8-OHdG levels among employees increased from 3.10 micro g/g creatinine, for those at the lowest tertile levels of both dCO(2) and TVOCs, to 6.27 micro g/g creatinine, for those at the highest tertile levels. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of having the urinary 8-OHdG level of greater than the median, 4.53 micro g/g creatinine, for participants was increased significantly at the highest tertile dCO(2) level of >680ppm (odds ratio (OR)=3.37, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.20-9.46). The effect was significant at the middle tertile TVOCs level of 114-360ppb (OR=2.62, 95% CI=1.43-4.79), but not at the highest tertile. Inadequate ventilation in office increases the risk of building-related oxidative stress in non-smoking employees.

Abstract
We describe a 12-year-old girl, who had been medicated with theophylline for bronchial asthma and developed acute encephalopathy with refractory status epilepticus, showing bilateral mesial temporal and claustral lesions, which were evident on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery images, obtained with 1.5 T magnetic resonance imaging. To date, oxidative stress has been implicated in aging or various disorders, including inflammatory or degenerative neurological disorders. One of the oxidative stress markers, 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine, was increased in our patient's cerebro-spinal fluid, plasma and urine. We speculate that augmented oxidative stress was associated with refractory status epilepticus in our patient, accompanying bilateral mesial temporal, claustral lesions and severe neuronal damage. Serial measurements of oxidative stress markers in acute encephalitis, encephalopathy, or status epilepticus could clarify the relationships between acute brain damage and free radicals.
