Assessing herbicide concentrations in the saturated and unsaturated zone of a Chalk aquifer in southern England

Pesticides in groundwater at a national scale (France): Impact of regulations, molecular properties, uses, hydrogeology and climatic conditions

Contaminants in groundwater are a major issue worldwide. Temporal trends of such occurrences in French groundwaters were evaluated for several active substances of pesticides belonging to different chemical classes, to identify key factors explaining groundwater contamination. Our study relied on exploitation of a French national database (ADES, created in the mid-1990s and remarkable for the available data, including over 88 million analyses). Temporal changes in the frequency of exceeding a reference value of 0.1 μg/L for several substances were determined at yearly and monthly scales. Such trends were examined by distinguishing different periods according to changes in regulations (new approval, withdrawal, or dose reduction), and were combined with data on effective rainfall as a proxy for groundwater recharge, on aquifer lithology, and on sales of active substances as a proxy for actual applications. A review of monthly data shows that a rapid transfer of pesticides with contrasting physico-chemical properties can occur after application in many aquifers, regardless of their lithology. For substances such as metolachlor, showing a sharp increase in sales, a clear relationship exists between quantities sold and frequency of exceeding the reference value. For other active substances, such as isoproturon or chlortoluron, frequencies of exceedance are governed by both sales and effective rainfall. Finally, the occurrence of active substances in groundwater several years after their withdrawal from the market is explained by at least three major mechanisms: the transfer time from soil into groundwater, processes of remobilization from soil and/or unsaturated zone, and no or low degradation in the saturated zone. While these processes are well documented for atrazine and different types of aquifers, they can be virtually unknown for other active substances.

Effectiveness of Advanced Oxidation Processes in Wastewater Treatment: State of the Art

In recent years, many scientific studies have focused their efforts on quantifying the different types of pollutants that are not removed in wastewater treatment plants. Compounds of emerging concern (CECs) have been detected in different natural environments. The presence of these compounds in wastewater is not new, but they may have consequences in the future. These compounds reach the natural environment through various routes, such as wastewater. This review focuses on the study of tertiary treatment with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for the degradation of CECs. The main objective of the different existing AOPs applied to the treatment of wastewater is the degradation of pollutants that are not eliminated by means of traditional wastewater treatment.

Source and persistence of pesticides in a semi-confined chalk aquifer of southeast England

Pesticide contamination in groundwater is an increasing problem that poses a significant long-term threat to water quality. Following the detection of elevated concentrations of diuron in boreholes in a semi-confined chalk aquifer from southeast England, a sampling programme was undertaken. Between 2003 and 2004 diuron was observed in 90% of groundwaters analysed. In 60% of groundwater samples metabolites of diuron were more prevalent than the parent compound. Longer-term (1989-2005) monitoring shows that pollution of the aquifer by atrazine, simazine, and more recently diuron, shows a positive correlation with periods of high groundwater levels. Results from groundwater residence time indicators suggest that the highest diuron concentrations are associated with waters containing the greatest proportion of recent recharge. There is some evidence to indicate that diuron occurrence can be spatially related to areas of urban and industrial development and is probably correlated with amenity usage.

Pesticides in the groundwater of a spring draining a sandy aquifer: temporal variability of concentrations and fluxes

A 250 ha agricultural catchment has been characterized with respect to its hydrogeology and groundwater contamination by pesticides from October 1999 to August 2004. Five years after the ending of atrazine (At) application, used since the sixties, At and deethylatrazine (DEA) are still systematically quantified at the outlet of the watershed with concentrations from 0.07 to 0.43 microg l(-1) for At, and between 0.14 and 1.16 microg l(-1) for DEA. Isoproturon and chlortoluron are detected in only one (0.3 microg l(-1)) and two (0.7 and 2.0 microg l(-1)) of the 124 semi-monthly samples, respectively. DEA concentrations can be very different between two samples with a 15-day time step. The annual mean exported fluxes of cumulated At and DEA are stable, which indicates a long time transfer in the unsaturated or saturated zone with a progressive leaching of the stock of At and DEA probably accumulated in the soil and the vadose zone. These fluxes, between 0.90% and 2.82% of the annual mean dose of At applied before 1999, similar to those calculated in several studies at the bottom of the root zone, could be explained by low adsorption and degradation properties of At and DEA in the unsaturated and saturated zone.

Impacts of climate change on the fate and behaviour of pesticides in surface and groundwater--A UK perspective

Over the last two decades significant effort has been dedicated to understanding the fate and transport of pesticides in surface water and groundwater and to use this understanding in the development of environmental policy and regulation. However, there have been few studies that have investigated the relationships between pesticides and climate change, and where this work has been undertaken it has principally been in relation to the impacts of climate change on agricultural production rather than in the context of environmental protection. This study addresses that gap by reviewing how climate change may impact the fate and transport of pesticides in surface and groundwaters as a pre-cursor to quantitative studies. In order to structure the review, we have adopted a source-pathway-receptor approach where climate sensitivities of pesticide source terms, environmental pathways and receptors are reviewed. The main climate drivers for changing pesticide fate and behaviour are thought to be changes in rainfall seasonality and intensity and increased temperatures, but the effect of climate change on pesticide fate and transport is likely to be very variable and difficult to predict. In the long-term, indirect impacts, such as land-use change driven by changes in climate, may have a more significant effect on pesticides in surface and groundwaters than the direct impacts of climate change on pesticide fate and transport. The review focuses on climate change scenarios and case studies from the UK; however, the general conclusions can be applied more widely.

New device and method for flux-proportional sampling of mobile solutes in soil and groundwater

The importance of monitoring the transport of organic contaminants in soil and groundwater, and the pros and cons of existing sampling methods, are outlined. A new, alternative sampling method is proposed, using a passive sampler that functions as a water-permeable, semi-infinite sink for passing solutes of interest. Tracers integrated in the device store information on the volume of water passing through the sampler during the installation period. The conceptual basis of the sampling method is described. This device enables flux-proportional monitoring of the concentrations of mobile contaminants in the soil and groundwater. 14C-labeled phenanthrene (PHEN) and glyphosate (GLY) are used as case study compounds in laboratory experiments. The sorption capacities and uptake kinetics of 13 adsorbents are screened and compared, as well as the dissolution kinetics of three tracer salts: calcium citrate, calcium fluoride (CaF2), and calcium hydrogen phosphate (CaHPO4). The application of the passive sampler is then demonstrated in long-term laboratory experiments, using large soil columns under steady-state hydraulic conditions. The accumulated flux of PHEN was sampled with an accuracy of 3.6%-17.8%, using graphitized carbon, hexagonal mesoporous silica, and cross-linked polymers as adsorbents. The accumulated flux of GLY was sampled with an accuracy of 12.4%, using gamma-alumina as an adsorbent. The advantages and limitations of this new environmental monitoring method are discussed.

A field study to assess the degradation and transport of diuron and its metabolites in a calcareous soil

An experimental plot has been established on a calcareous soil in southern England to investigate the fate and transport of diuron (N'-[3,4-dichlorophenyl]-N,N-dimethylurea), a commonly used phenylurea herbicide. An agricultural grade of diuron was applied to the soil surface at a rate of 6.7 kg/ha along with a potassium bromide conservative tracer applied at 200 kg/ha, in early January, 2001. Hand augured samples were taken at regular intervals over the next 50 days, with samples collected down to 54 cm. Porewaters were extracted from the soil cores by using high speed centrifugation and the supernatant fluids were retained for analysis by HPLC, for diuron and three of its metabolites, N'-[3,4-dichlorophenyl]-N,N-methylurea (DCPMU), N'-3,4-dichlorophenylurea (DCPU) and 3,4-dichloroaniline (DCA). The centrifuged soil was retained and then extracted with methanol prior to HPLC analysis for the same suite of phenylureas. A mass balance approach showed large variations in diuron distribution, but on average accounted for 104% of the diuron applied. Concentrations of diuron and its metabolites were roughly five times higher in the soil than in the soil porewaters. After 50 days, metabolites comprised 10% of the total diuron present in the porewater and 20% of the total diuron sorbed to the soil matrix. After 36 days, a large pulse of diuron and DCPMU appeared in the porewaters and soil matrix at a depth of 54 cm, travelling an average of 0.15 cm/day faster than Br. A preferential route for diuron transport is suggested. There is evidence to suggest that degradation occurs at depth as well as at the soil surface. Metabolites generally appear to move more slowly than the parent compound. All metabolites were encountered, but interpreting transport and degradation processes simultaneously proved beyond the scope of the study. Diuron was detected once in a shallow (5 m) observation well, situated on the experimental plot. High concentrations of diuron and metabolites were still present in the soil and soil solutions after 50 days and remain as a source of potential groundwater contamination.

Penetration of herbicides to groundwater in an unconfined chalk aquifer following normal soil applications

The persistence and penetration of the herbicides isoproturon and chlorotoluron in an unconfined chalk aquifer has been monitored over a 4-year period through soil sampling, shallow coring and groundwater monitoring. Chlorotoluron was applied on plots as a marker compound, having never been used previously on that, or surrounding fields. The fieldsite had a 5 degree slope with soil depths of 0.5 to 1.5 m and a water table between 20 and 5 m from the soil surface. Where the water table was deepest (9-20 m below surface (mbs)) little or no positive herbicide detections were made. However, where the water table was at only 4-5 mbs, a regular pesticide signal of around 0.1 microg/l for isoproturon and chlorotoluron could be distinguished. Over the winter recharge period automatic borehole samplers revealed a series of short-lived peaks of isoproturon and chlorotoluron reaching up to 0.8 microg/l. This is consistent with a preferential flow mechanism operating at this particular part of the field. Such peaks were occurring over 2 years after the last application of these compounds. Shallow coring failed to uncover any significant pesticide pulse moving through the deep unsaturated zone matrix at the fieldsite.
