Effect of post-space treatments on the push-out bond strength and failure modes of glass fibre posts

(1) Background: This study aimed to evaluate how laser-activated irrigation (LAI) influences the retention of a fiber post when used before an endodontic filling, as well as after post space preparation. (2) Materials and Methods: Sixty freshly extracted human incisors were selected. The teeth were randomly assigned to three groups-CONVENTIONAL (CONV), PIPS or SWEEPS-and treated endodontically. Each group received irrigation with 1 × 5 mL EDTA (17%) and 3 × 5 mL NaOCl (5.25%). In the first group, the irrigants were not activated, while in the second and third group, LAI was adopted using PIPS and SWEEPS protocols (Lightwalker from Fotona, Ljubliana, Slovenia). After post space preparation, each group received the same irrigation protocol initially established. Sticky posts (everStick Post, GC AUSTRIA GmbH Swiss) were individually adapted to the corresponding post spaces and cemented using dual cure resin cement (Gradia Core, GC Austria GmbH Swiss). All specimens were vertically embedded into self-curing acrylate (Duracryl plus, Spofa Dent, Europe), and each was sectioned into three segments of type A and type B samples for debonding through push-out and pull-out tests. The results were statistically analyzed. (3) Results: The pull-out test showed the superiority of the SWEEPS group, with a mean fracture force of 133.0 ± 50.7 N, followed by the PIPS group, with 102 N, with a lower standard deviation of ± 34.5 N. The CONV group registered the lowest fracture force. Concerning the push-out test, the SWEEPS group showed superior shear stress in comparison to the other two groups (13.45 ± 4.29 MPa); the CONV group was inferior, with shear tension values of 8.31 ± 4.67 MPa. (4) Conclusions: It can be stated that the SWEEPS and PIPS protocols resulted in considerably higher fiber post retention than the conventional method, whereas the SWEEPS protocol was superior to the PIPS protocol.

Glycolic acid on push-out bond strength of fiber post and smear removal: an in vitro study

This study aims to investigate glycolic acid (GA) as a final irrigant on push-out bond strength of fiber post and smear removal. Ninety mandibular premolars were stabilized with a silicone key and photographed, and canal cross-section was calculated by image processing software. Round canal morphology was selected. The specimens were divided into five groups (n = 18); 10%GA, 17%EDTA, NaOCl + 10%GA, NaOCl + 17%EDTA, and the control. Fifteen specimens were used for the push-out. Three specimens were evaluated using a scanning electron microscope after post space preparation. Two-way ANOVA and Chi-square were used for statistics. GA presented higher strength than EDTA (p < 0.05). The NaOCl + GA showed higher strength than the NaOCl + EDTA (p < 0.05). The highest values were observed in cervical and lowest in apical thirds (p < 0.05). The most failure type was between dentin and resin (p < 0.05). GA removed the smear in the post space including the apical third. The NaOCl + GA has superiority to NaOCl + EDTA on push-out strength. Glycolic acid improved the bond strength of fiber post when used as a final post space irrigant. The combination of NaOCl and glycolic acid did not negatively affect the bond strength and was more effective compared to the combination with EDTA. Glycolic acid improved the bond strength of fiber post when used as a final post space irrigant. Push-Out Bond Strength of Glass Fiber Endodontic Posts with Different Diameters

(1) Background: The retention of intraradicular posts is an important factor for the prognosis of endodontically treated teeth. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the push-out bond strength (PBS) of the posts relating to their diameter and region of the root. (2) Methods: A total of 40 premolar teeth (decoronated and root canal-filled) were divided into four groups (n = 10). After post-space preparation, different sizes (1.0, 1.2, 1.5, and 2.0 mm) of glass fiber posts were luted with resin cement into the root canals. After placement, 2 mm thick slices were cut from the roots according to their apical, middle, and coronal regions (n = 116). Push-out tests were carried out in a universal testing machine on each slice. A statistical evaluation of the data was applied. (3) Results: When comparing the diameter, the 2.0 mm posts had the highest PBS (111.99 ± 10.40 N), while the 1.0 mm posts had the lowest PBS (99.98 ± 8.05 N). Divided by the surface of the bonded area, the average PBS value was the highest for the 1.0 mm posts (18.20 ± 1.67 MPa) and the lowest for the 2.0 mm posts (12.08 ± 1.05 MPa). (4) Conclusions: Within the limitations of the study, when comparing the regions of the roots, no significant differences were found among the PBS values of the three regions (p = 0.219). When comparing the diameters, significant differences were shown between the PBS values of the four groups (p = 0.023 and p = 0.003, respectively).

Formulations of NaOCl-based in liquid, gel form or with surfactants on dentin deproteinization before fiber post cementation

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of dentin deproteinization protocols for post space using different formulations containing sodium hypochlorite before fiber post cementation with self-adhesive resinous cement. The groups were divided according to the irrigation protocol (DWC, SHS, SHT and SHG). The residue cleanliness, bond strength, adhesive failure pattern, and tag formation at the adhesive interface between the self-adhesive cement and the dentin were evaluated. For this, analysis in scanning electron microscope, push-out test and confocal laser scanning microscopy were performed. The SHT protocol showed the highest residue cleanliness on the dentin surface of the post space (p<0.05). In addition, SHT protocol showed highest bond strength and tag formation in the cervical and middle thirds (p<0.05). Dentin deproteinization with sodium hypochlorite with surfactant provided the best dentin cleaning of residues, bond strength and tag formation after cementation of the fiber post with self-adhesive cement.

Effect of antioxidants after post-space irrigation on the adhesive interface of glass fiber post cementation

OBJECTIVE

This study evaluated the effects of antioxidants, 10% sodium ascorbate (SA) or 20% alpha-tocopherol (AT), after post-space irrigation with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite +17% EDTA (SH) or 1% peracetic acid (PA) on the adhesive interface after glass fiber post cementation.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Sixty bovine roots were endodontically treated. After preparation, the post-space was irrigated with SH or PA followed or not by the use of antioxidants (SA or AT) (n = 10). Push-out bond strength test, failure mode, and dentin penetrability analysis using confocal laser microscope were performed in the cervical, middle, and apical thirds. Data from bond strength and dentinal penetrability were evaluated by one-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc test (p < 0.05).

RESULTS

SH showed the lowest bond strength regardless of the third (p < 0.05). In apical third, mixed failure was the most incident in all groups. Only in the cervical third of the post-space, SH-AT provided the greatest tag extension of the cementation system into dentin (p < 0.05). However, in the middle and apical thirds, SH-AT, SH-SA, and PA-SA provided the largest tag extensions (p < 0.05), but similar to each other (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

The use of antioxidants only favored bond strength when SH was used and dentin penetrability of the adhesive and conventional resin cementation, regardless of the solution used to irrigate the post-space.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The use of antioxidants (10% sodium ascorbate and 20% alpha-tocopherol) after post-space irrigation with sodium hypochlorite appears to increase the bond strength favoring the glass fiber post-cementation.

Influence of different intraradicular chemical pretreatments on the bond strength of adhesive interface between dentine and fiber post cements: A systematic review and network meta-analysis

Systematic review and network meta-analyses were performed to answer the question: Do intraradicular chemical pretreatments affect the bond strength of the adhesive interface between dentine and fiber post cements? A literature search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS, BBO, and Cochrane Library in October 2018 (updated September 2021). In vitro studies that compared the bond strength assessed by push-out tests following at least two dentine chemical treatments prior to fiber post cementation were included. Risk of bias was evaluated. A random-effects Bayesian-mixed treatment comparison model was used to compare push-out bond strength of different chemical pretreatments. SUCRA (surface area under the cumulative ranking) analysis was performed to rank the pretreatments. After removing duplicates and screening titles and abstracts, 61 studies remained. SUCRA analysis showed that the best bond strength values for self-etch, etch-and-rinse, and self-adhesive cements were ethyl acetate (SUCRA: 99.8%), low concentration NaOCl (SUCRA: 83.4%), and grape seed extract (SUCRA: 97.6%), respectively. According to the SUCRA rankings, ethanol was in a good position for all adhesive strategies (SUCRA: 78.6%). The use of chemical pretreatments in intraradicular dentine of endodontically treated teeth depends on the adhesive and cementation strategy. The pretreatment generally associated with the highest bond strength was ethanol.

Influence of Laser Irradiation Settings, during Diode-Assisted Endodontics, on the Intraradicular Adhesion of Self-Etch and Self-Curing Luting Cement during Restoration-An Ex Vivo Study

Background: Diode-assisted endodontics is nowadays utilized for pulp space disinfection, but little is known on the bonding potential of this lased root dentin when the tooth is restored with an intracanal polymer post. Objectives: to investigate the influence of diode laser irradiation settings, in laser-assisted endodontics, on the intraradicular bonding of composite materials. Methods: Sixteen two-rooted, maxillary first premolars were collected, prepared up to F4 (Protaper Universal. Dentsply-Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland), and randomly assigned in two groups: group A (chopped mode or short pulse), diode irradiated according to protocol, pulse 25 ms, power 2.5 W, and group B (microchopped mode or ultrashort pulse), pulse 25 μs, peak power 12 W (both groups GentleRay. KaVo Dental, Biberach an der Riss, Germany). Buccal canals were irradiated, palatal ones served as controls. Canals were then obturated, post space was created in all canals, and quartz-fiber posts (ICE light Danville. Danville Materials, San Ramon, CA, USA) were cemented by self-etch self-curing cement (Max Cem Elite. Kerr, West Collins Orange, CA, USA) (Max Cem Elite. Kerr, Brea, CA, USA). A week later, teeth were sectioned horizontally in 1 mm increments. Push-out test was conducted in a Zwick testing machine (Zwick Roell, Ulm, Germany) at 1 mm/min speed, and the force required to dislodge the post from each specimen (F-max) was recorded. Weibull regression models were applied for statistical analyses. Results: Differences in F-max by group (control vs. chopped mode vs. microchopped mode) and height (meaning the apical-to-coronal position of each specimen along the root) were statistically significant (p < 0.05 in all cases). Conclusions: Short pulses (or chopped mode) had a profound positive effect on the quality of intraradicular bonding, while Ultrashort pulses (or microchopped mode) affected it negatively. In addition, apically positioned bonding proved weaker compared with more coronally located specimens.

Photodynamic therapy and gaseous ozone versus conventional post space treatment methods on the push-out bond strength of fiber posts luting with different resin cements

BACKGROUND

The aim of this study was to compare the push-out bond strength of fiber posts by using two different resin cement after the treatments of post space with photodynamic therapy, gaseous ozone and conventional disinfection solution.

METHODS

The root canal treatments of one hundred maxillary incisors were performed. The roots were randomly distributed into 5 groups (n = 20). NaOCl of 2.5% + EDTA of 17% in group 1, CHX of 2% in group 2, toluidine blue + diode laser as the photodynamic therapy (PDT) in group 3 and ozone in group 4 were applied to the post spaces. Group 5 was washed with distilled water as control group. Each group was divided into two subgroups according to the adhesive types and the posts were bonded by using RelyX and LinkForce. The bond strength was calculated using the push-out test method. Resin tag formations were photographed with SEM. The push-out bond strength was analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey tests (p = .05).

RESULTS

The PDT group, which showed the highest PBS among the groups bonded with LinkForce at all levels, was significantly higher than Ozone and DW groups (p<.05). NaOCl and ozone treatments provided the highest PBS among the groups bonded with RelyX for all levels and this difference was significant according to the DW group (p < .05).

CONCLUSION

Post space treatments improved the bond strength of the fiber post ​​in both types of resin cement.

Post-Space Treatment Influences the Bond Strength In Endodontically Treated Teeth: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of In Vitro Studies

OBJECTIVES

This systematic review of in vitro studies investigated the influence of the post-space treatment used to remove the smear layer on the bond strength of the post to root canal dentin.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

In vitro studies included in this study were identified from PubMed/MEDLINE, Lilacs, and Scopus databases up until March 2019, without limits on publication year or language. Two reviewers independently selected the studies based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, extracted the data, and evaluated the risk of bias of all studies. A random effects model was used for pairwise meta-analyses (control vs. post-space preparation groups) at a significance level of p<0.05.

RESULTS

Of the 2,832 potentially eligible studies, 453 studies were selected for full-text analysis, and 75 were included in this systematic review. Only one study was considered to have a low risk of bias. Overall, post-space treatment significantly improves the bond strength to root canal dentin (p<0.00001).

CONCLUSION

Post-space treatment has a positive influence on the bond strength of the post to root canal dentin. In this review, the post-space treatments that improve the adhesive resistance of the post were ethanol, sodium hypochlorite, and ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (NaOCl + EDTA), NaOCl + EDTA + ultrasound, erbium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet laser (Er:YAG laser), neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet laser (Nd:YAG laser), and diode laser.

Effect of surface treatments on push-out bond strength of calcium silicate-based cements to fiber posts

BACKGROUND

To evaluate the effect of surface treatments on the push-out bond strength of Biodentine (BD) and white mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA) to fiber posts.

METHODS

Two brands of fiber posts were used: Reblida post; RP and RelyX post; RX. Each type of post (n = 80/group) was divided into four groups (n = 20/group) and exposed to surface treatment as follows: Control (no treatment), sandblasting (SB), hydrofluoric acid (HF), and TiF₄ 4 wt/v%. Each group was further subdivided into two subgroups (n = 10/subgroup) based on the type of CSCs used as follows: Subgroup A: BD and Subgroup B: WMTA. Push-out bond strength of BD and WMTA to glass fiber posts was assessed. Data were statistically analyzed using three-way ANOVA and Tukey's test. A Weibull analysis was performed on the push-out bond strength data.

RESULTS

BD showed higher bond strength than WMTA (P < 0.001). The push-out bond strength for posts treated with TiF4 4 wt/v% showed greater bond strength than the other surface treatments (P < 0.05). The BD/RP-TiF₄ 4 wt/v% showed the greater characteristic bond strength (σ₀) (15.93) compared with the other groups. Surface treatments modified the surface topography of glass fiber posts.

CONCLUSIONS

The BD/RP-TiF₄ 4 wt/v% showed greater bond strength compared with the other groups. The TiF₄ 4 wt/v% surface treatment enhanced the bond strength of BD and WMTA to glass fiber posts than the other treatments. Surface treatment of fiber post with TiF₄ 4 wt/v% could be used to improve the bond strength with calcium silicate-based cements.

Influence of resin cements and root canal disinfection techniques on the adhesive bond strength of fibre reinforced composite post to radicular dentin

AIM

To determine the push out bond strength (PBS) of fibre reinforced composite post (FRCP) bonded to radicular dentin using different cement types total etch resin cement (TERC) and Self-adhesive resin cement (SARC) conditioned with (PDT, 5.25 % NaOCl with EDTA and 1% NaOCl) MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty freshly extracted (orthodontic purpose) human single rooted mandibular premolars were collected. Teeth were disinfected and coronal part of all samples were removed. Cleaning shaping and finishing of canal space was performed and filled with gutta percha via lateral condensation. Post space was prepared and disinfected with three irrigating solutions. Samples in group 1 and 2 disinfected 5.25 % NaOCl with EDTA, group 3 and 4 steriled with 1% NaOCl and group 5 and 6 disinfected with Methylene Blue photodynamic therapy (PDT). Based on the resin cement, FRCP was luted with TERC in group 2, 4 and 5; and with SARC in group 1,3 and 6 respectively. All specimens were subjected to aging and push-out bond strength (PBS) on universal testing machine after sectioning of each sample in three segments (coronal, middle and apical). Following push out bond strength (PBS), debonded surface were observed under stereomicroscope at 40x magnification. PBS were equated by means of analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post hoc test maintaining level of significance (p < 0.05) RESULTS: Group 1 (SARC) and 2 (TERC) disinfected with 5.25 % NaOCl with 17 % EDTA, TERC (group 2) showed higher extrusion bond strength at all three levels coronal (9.25 ± 0.21 MPa) middle (8.81 ± 0.94 MPa) and apical (8.21 ± 0.93 MPa). Whereas, canal space sterilized with 1% NaOCl [group 3 (SARC) and group 4 (TERC)], posts cemented with TERC exhibited the higher PBS at all three levels of root canal (10.22 ± 0.36 MPa), (9.68 ± 0.51 MPa), (6.33 ± 0.08 MPa). Similarly, among PDT disinfected fiber post [group 5 (TERC) and group 6 (SARC)], TERC exhibited the greater PBS values at coronal, middle and apical levels (6.25 ± 0.39 MPa) (5.17 ± 0.22 MPa) (4.32 ± 0.69 MPa) compared to SARC specimens CONCLUSION: Irrespective of canal irrigant, fiber post bonded with TERC showed higher PBS at coronal and middle third. Fiber post bonded with SARC when irrigated with 5.25 % NaOCl with EDTA, 1% NaOCl displayed higher PBS at apical third. Canal disinfected using PDT showed lower PBS for FRCP compared to 5.25 % NaOCl with EDTA and 1% NaOCl.

Effect of ultrasonic and Nd: Yag laser activation on irrigants on the push-out bond strength of fiber post to the root canal

OBJECTIVE

This in vitro study aimed to compare the efficacy of irrigants using various irrigation activation methods to the push-out bond strengths of fiber post to root canal luted with self-adhesive resin cement (SARC).

METHODOLOGY

Forty-eight decoronated human canines were used. The specimens were divided into four groups corresponding with the post-space irrigation process and were treated as follows: distilled water (DW) (Control) group received 15 mL of DW; sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl)+ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) group was treated with 5 mL of 5.25% NaOCl, 5 mL of 17% EDTA, and 5 mL of DW; passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) group was treated with 5 mL of 5.25% NaOCl, 5 mL of 17% EDTA, and 5 mL of DW, and each irrigant was agitated with an ultrasonic file; and laser activated irrigation (LAI) group was treated with 5 mL of 5.25% NaOCl, 5 mL of 17% EDTA, and 5 mL of DW, and each irrigant was irradiated with Nd: YAG laser. Fiber posts were luted with SARC, and a push-out test was performed. Data was analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and Tukey HSD test.

RESULTS

The bond strength values for the groups obtained were as follows: Control (10.04 MPa), NaOCl+EDTA (11.07 MPa), PUI (11.85 MPa), and LAI (11.63 MPa). No statistically significant differences were found among all experimental groups (p>0.05). The coronal (12.66 MPa) and middle (11.63 MPa) root regions indicated a significantly higher bond strength compared with the apical (9.16 MPa) region (p<0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Irrigant activation methods did not increase the bond strength of fiber post to canal.

Irrigación del conducto radicular y tratamiento de superficie de pernos de fibra, previo a la cementación: revisión de tema

Introducción: el tratamiento endodóntico es muy solicitado para preservar las piezas dentales, así como la utilización de pernos de fibra cuando el remanente coronario no es el adecuado para recibir una prótesis coronaria, permitiendo de esta manera reconstruir el muñón dental para la posterior colocación de la restauración definitiva. Objetivo: identificar tanto el tratamiento de superficie de pernos de fibra como el irrigante radicular idóneos para conseguir una cementación adecuada; así como conocer cuál es el tratamiento de superficie que produce menos desintegración de las fibras del perno de fibra. Materiales y métodos: se incluyeron 47 artículos publicados en inglés, durante los últimos 20 años, teniendo en cuenta que los mismos se obtuvieron hasta octubre del 2018. Conclusiones: previa la cementación de pernos sean estos de fibra o de cuarzo es indispensable realizar tratamiento de superficie para así mejorar la adhesión, estos pueden ser químicos o físicos, los que ofrecen mejor resultado sin alterar de manera significativa la estructura del mismo es el enarenado con partículas de diamante sintéticas de 1-3 µm seguido de silanización y dentro de los químicos H2O2 al 10% por 1 min seguido de silano. Para obtener mejores resultados se debe accionar el silano a una temperatura de 80°C. En cuanto a protocolos de irrigación depende del sistema de cementación que se vaya a emplear EDTA 18% + Hipoclorito de sodio al 5,25% o EDTA 18% + clorhexidina al 2% cuando se va emplear un cemento autoadhesivoy NaOCl al 11% cuando se utilice el acondicionamiento ácido de lavado y secado.

Can intra-radicular cleaning protocols increase the retention of fiberglass posts? A systematic review

The presence of residues within the root canal after post-space preparation can influence the bond strength between resin cement and root dentin when using fiberglass posts (FGPs). Currently, there is no consensus in the literature regarding what is the best solution for the removal of debris after post-space preparation. This systematic review involved "in vitro" studies to investigate if cleaning methods of the root canal after post-space preparation can increase the retention of FGPs evaluated by the push-out test. Searches were carried out in PubMed (MEDLINE) and Scopus databases up to July2017. English language studies published from 2007 to July 2017 were selected. 475 studies were found, and 9 were included in this review. Information from the 9 studies were collected regarding the number of samples, storage method after extraction, root canal preparation, method of post-space preparation, endodontic sealer, resin cement, cleaning methods after post-space and presence of irrigant activation. Five studies presented the best results for the association of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA), while in the other 4 studies, the solutions that showed improved retention of FGPs were photon-induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS), Qmix, Sikko and EDTA. The results showed heterogeneity in all comparisons due to a high variety of information about cleaning methods, different concentrations, application time, type of adhesive system and resin cements used. In conclusion, this review suggests that the use of NaOCl/EDTA results in the retention of FGPs and may thus be recommended as a post-space cleaning method influencing the luting procedure.

Effects of different peracetic acid formulations on post space radicular dentin

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The optimal irrigating solution with antimicrobial and dentin cleansing properties for post space preparation for fiber posts is unclear. Peracetic acid is one option but is available in various chemical formulations that require evaluation.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate dentin surface cleanliness based on the presence of a smear layer and the number of open dentin tubules. It also investigates the chemical composition of residues after canal irrigation with a 1% peracetic acid solution (PA) at low or high concentration of hydrogen peroxide during the preparation of intracanal fiber posts.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

After filling the root canals of 40 mandibular incisors, a rotary instrument was used for intracanal preparation to place fiber posts. The teeth were divided into 4 groups (n=10) according to the post space irrigation protocol as follows: CG (control): distilled water; NA (NaOCl): 2.5% sodium hypochlorite; LH: PA with low concentration of hydrogen peroxide; and HH: PA with high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide. After irrigation, the teeth were sectioned, and the intracanal dentin surface was subjected to analysis using energy dispersive spectroscopy to evaluate chemical composition and to scanning electron microscopy (×500) to evaluate the presence of the smear layer. The number of open dentin tubules was measured by scanning electron microscopy analysis (×2000) using photo-editing software. ANOVA and the Tukey test (α=.05) were used to evaluate the data, except for the presence of a smear layer, for which the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests were used (α=.05).

RESULTS

The highest concentrations of oxygen in the dentin residues were detected in LH and HH (P<.05); CG and NA showed similar oxygen concentrations (P>.05). NA had a higher concentration of chlorine (P<.05), whereas LH had a lower amount of smear layer and a larger number of open dentin tubules than the other groups (P<.05). These were equivalent to each other (P>.05), except for HH, which also had a larger number of open dentin tubules than CG and NA (P<.05).

CONCLUSIONS

PA 1% with a low concentration of hydrogen peroxide yielded a lower amount of smear layer and a larger number of open dentin tubules in the dentin of the post space when compared with PA 1% with a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide, despite maintaining a similar oxygen concentration in these dentin residues.

Efficacy of Different Root Canal Irrigants on Smear Layer Removal after Post Space Preparation: A Scanning Electron Microscopy Evaluation

Introduction:

Effective durable adhesion between post material and dentine using resin cements is essential for longevity of restoration. The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the effect of different irrigants on smear layer removal after post space preparation.

Methods and Materials:

A total of 75 extracted anterior human teeth were selected. The canals were instrumented by rotary system and then were filled. After preparing the post space, teeth were divided into 5 groups according to irrigants: 17% EDTA; 17% EDTA+2% CHX; 5.25% NaOCl; 17% EDTA+5.25% NaOCl; and saline. The canals were irrigated with 5 cc of each irrigants for 1 min. Specimens were examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Hulsmann’s score was used for marking of smear layer removal at coronal, middle and apical thirds of post space. The data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests.

Results:

The results revealed that subsequent use of 17% EDTA+5.25% NaOCl was more effective than the other groups in smear layer removal. No statistical difference was found among different levels of root canal within each group.

Conclusion:

It can be concluded that 17% EDTA+5.25% NaOCl could be an effective irrigant for smear layer removal after post space preparation.

Effect of different irrigant activation protocols on push-out bond strength

The study aimed to evaluate the effect of various final irrigant activation protocols on push-out bond strength of fiber post. Thirty-two single-rooted human maxillar central teeth were sectioned below the cementoenamel junction, instrumented and obturated. Post-space preparation was performed, and roots were randomly divided into eight groups (n = 4) according to the final irrigant activation protocols; distilled water was used as an irrigant in group 1. The other groups were treated with 2.5% NaOCl and 17% EDTA. Conventional syringe irrigation (CSI, no activation) was used in group 2. Irrigation solutions were activated using passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI, group 3), EndoVac apical negative pressure (ANP, group 4), diode laser (group 5), neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser (group 6), erbium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser (group 7), and Er:YAG laser using with photon-induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS™) technique (group 8). In all groups, fiber posts (White Post DC, FGM) were luted using Panavia F 2.0 (Kuraray, Osaka, Japan). The specimens were transversally sectioned, and all slices from coronal and apical regions were subjected to push-out tests. The data were calculated as megapascals and analyzed by using two-way analysis of variance followed by post hoc Tukey honestly significant difference (HSD) tests. Removing the smear layer increased the bond strength to dentine when compared with the control group (p < 0.05). The highest bond strength was obtained in the PIPS laser-activated irrigation group (p < 0.05). Coronal root region presented significantly higher bond strength than the apical region (p < 0.05). PIPS laser-activated irrigation showed higher efficiency as a final irrigant activation protocol on push-out bond strength of fiber post.

Influence of Relining Post on the Bond Strength of Resin Cements

This study evaluated the influence of relining fiber posts on the bond strength (BS) of resin cements in the root canal. Forty bovine teeth were divided in four groups (n = 10): G1 (ARC)-fiber post cemented with resin cement RelyX ARC; G2 (ARC+Z350)-relined fiber post cemented with RelyX ARC; G3 (U200)-fiber post cemented with self-adhesive cement RelyX U200; G4 (U200+Z350)-relined fiber post cemented with RelyX U200. The roots were sectioned in six 1.2-mm slices and the push-out test was performed. Data were analyzed by three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Tukey's test (a = 0.05). For the conventional resin cement, there was no significant difference between groups G1-ARC (15.5 ± 3.8) and G2-ARC+Z350 (16.1 ± 4.5). For the self-adhesive cement, the results revealed higher BS values for relined posts G4-U200 + Z350 (19.9 ± 7.9) as compared to non-relined posts G3-U200 (14.4 ± 4.5). For both cements, in groups of relined posts, the apical and the cervical thirds presented similar BS. Relining enhances the performance of the self-adhesive resin cement, and the interaction between relining and root third influences the BS to the conventional resin cement.
