Abstract
Bone marrow metastasis (BMM) of solid tumors refers to a group of diseases that originate from non-hematopoietic malignant tumor cells invading the bone marrow (BM) through complex metastatic patterns. If BMM identification is delayed, the disease will rapidly develop into disseminated carcinogenesis of the BM, which manifests as a series of hematological disorders and microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, leading to serious life-threatening conditions. Although the study of solid tumor BMM is receiving increasing attention, study remains limited, and most descriptions are derived from case reports. Currently, clinicians have insufficient understanding of BMM, and BMM occurrence is often not recognized early or treated effectively, resulting in high mortality rates. In this article, we review the epidemiology, molecular mechanisms, clinical diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of solid tumor BMM.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic role of plasma platelet count (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV), and the combined COP-MPV score in patients with resectable adenocarcinomas of the gastroesophageal junction. BACKGROUND Platelet activation, quantified by PLT and elevated MPV, plays an essential part in the biological process of carcinogenesis and metastasis. An increased preoperative COP-MPV is associated with poor survival in various tumor entities. METHODS Data of 265 patients undergoing surgical resection for adenocarcinoma of the gastroesophageal junction were abstracted. COP-MPV score was defined for each patient. Utilizing univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard analyses, survival was determined. RESULTS In univariate analysis, elevated PLT (HR 3.58, 95% CI 2.61-4.80, p<0.001) and increased COP-MPV (HR 0.27, 95% CI 0.17-0.42, p<0.001 and HR 0.42, 95% CI 0.29-0.60, p<0.001) significantly correlated with shorter patients' overall and disease-free survival, for all 256 patients, as well as in the subgroups of neoadjuvantly treated (p<0.001) and primarily resected patients (p<0.001). COP-MPV remained a significant prognostic factor in multivariate analysis for OS. However, PLT alone showed significant diminished OS and DFS in all subgroups (p<0.001) in univariate and multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION PLT is a potent independent prognostic biomarker for survival in a large prospective cohort of patients with resectable adenocarcinoma of the gastroesophageal junction. Additionally, we confirm that the COP-MPV score is significantly associated with worse outcome in these patients, but has no benefit in comparison to PLT.

Abstract
Purpose: The ratio of c-reactive protein-to-albumin (CRP/Alb) is a biochemical marker of systemic inflammatory response and has been associated with poor survival in cancer. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of CRP/Alb ratios on prognosis in gastric cancers. Methods: This study included a retrospective review of a total of 147 patients with locally advanced gastric cancer. Mean platelet volume (MPV) was analyzed statistically to find a prognostic relationship between monocyte/lymphocyte ratio, platelet distribution volume (PDW), MPV/platelet, c-reactive protein/albumin ratio (CAR), and gastric cancer. Patients were staged according to the American Joint Cancer Committee (AJCC) Staging Guidelines. Results: The CRP/Alb ratio was independently associated with overall survival (OS) in patients with gastric cancer (GC). The CAR was above 0.25 in 52.7% (77) of the patients and below 0.25 in 47.3% (69) of the patients. Patients under 0.25 had statistically longer survival rates. Conclusion: A high preoperative CAR value could predict poor prognosis in locally advanced gastric patients. The same predictive value was not observed in other hematological parameters. This simple and cost-effective ratio can be used as a clinically accessible biomarker to assist clinicians in determining future treatment plans.

Objectives
This study aims to investigate the diagnostic and prognostic role of mean platelet volume (MPV) and MPV/platelet (PLT) ratio in the most common soft tissue sarcomas. Patients and methods
We retrospectively investigated 131 patients (76 males, 55 females; mean age: 51.8±17.1; range, 18 to 87 years) with soft-tissue sarcomas between January 2011 and January 2019. Demographic features, MPV, PLT counts, mortality, and recurrence records of the patients were obtained from archives. A total of 165 healthy volunteers (101 males, 64 females; mean age 52.9±4.1; range, 18 to 60 years) who applied to the outpatient clinic in 2019 and had routine blood control without any additional disease formed the control group. Results
A total of 55 patients were diagnosed with liposarcoma and 76 with pleomorphic sarcoma. Of the tumors, 77.1% were located in the lower limbs. Lesions were mostly localized on the thigh 48.8% (n=64). Recurrence occurred in 28.2% of the patients. A total of 25 (19.1%) patients were exitus. The mean follow-up period of the patients was 34.4±19.1 (range, 9 to 112) months. The mean PLT value of the patient group was significantly higher than the control group. The median MPV and MPV/PLT ratio were statistically significantly lower in the patient group than in the control group. The MPV and MPV/PLT ratio were not associated with mortality and recurrence. Conclusion
As a result, MPV and MPV/PLT ratio can be used as a diagnostic support parameter in soft tissue sarcomas, but have no prognostic value.

Abstract
Objectives
This study aims to investigate the diagnostic and prognostic role of mean platelet volume (MPV) and MPV/platelet (PLT) ratio in primary malignant bone tumors. Patients and methods
We retrospectively investigated patients with primary malignant bone tumors between January 2010 and January 2019 and included 109 patients (69 males, 40 females; mean age: 41.9±17.9 years; range 15 to 86 years) in the study. A total of 107 healthy volunteers (61 males, 46 females; mean age: 47 years; range 19 to 61 years) who donated blood to the blood center of our hospital in 2019 formed the control group. Demographic features, MPV, PLT counts, mortality, and recurrence records of the patients were obtained from archives. Results
Of the 109 patients, 11 were diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, 52 with chondrosarcoma, and 46 with osteosarcoma. The tumor was located on the right in 56% of patients and on the lower extremity in 59.6% of patients. The recurrence rate was 41.3% in the patient group. Of the 109 patients, 17 (15.6%) resulted in exitus at follow-up. The mean PLT value of the patient group was significantly higher than the control group (289,440 vs. 247,299, p<0.001). The median MPV and MPV/PLT ratios were statistically significantly lower in the patient group than in the control group (8.3 vs. 10.5, p<0.001 and 0.032 vs. 0.043, p<0.001, respectively). The MPV, PLT count, and MPV/PLT ratio were not associated with mortality and recurrence. The cut-off value was determined as >9.25 fL for MPV (sensitivity=74%, specificity=85%, positive likelihood ratio=4.96, positive predictive value=83.4%, and negative predictive value=76.5). Conclusion
Consequently, MPV and MPV/PLT ratios can be used as a diagnostic support parameter in primary malignant bone tumors, but have no prognostic value.

Abstract
Background: Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer mortality in women, which seriously threatens the health of women worldwide. Platelet (PLT)-related parameters, including PLT count, mean platelet volume (MPV), plateletcrit (PCT), and platelet distribution width (PDW), are correlated with tumor prognosis. Methods: In total, 110 patients with cervical carcinoma were recruited in this study. The patients were divided into 2 groups according to the receiver operating characteristic analysis cutoff values of PLT, MPV, PCT, or PDW. The post-/preradiotherapy ratios were defined as the rate of preradiotherapy PLT-related parameters counts and the corresponding ones obtained after radiotherapy. Results: Higher pretreatment PLT level was correlated with Higher Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage (II). Higher pretreatment PLT level was correlated with worse progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Increased post-/preradiotherapy ratio of PLT was correlated with worse PFS and OS. Changes in PCT, MPV, or PDW levels had no effects on PFS or OS. Cox regression analysis model indicated that larger tumor size, higher pretreatment PLT level, and increased post-/preradiotherapy PLT ratio were independently associated with worse PFS; higher FIGO stage (II) and increased post-/preradiotherapy PLT ratio were independently associated with worse OS. Conclusion: Pretreatment PLT level and increased post-/preradiotherapy PLT ratio are correlated with outcomes of cervical cancer.

Abstract
PURPOSE Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have an increased risk of breast cancer (BC). Furthermore, growing evidence suggests that activated platelets play a crucial role in tumor and T2DM. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a platelet index and is altered in patients with malignancies. The aim of this study was to determine whether preoperative MPV could predict survival in BC patients with T2DM. METHODS The clinical data of 266 female BC patients with T2DM and 264 female BC patients without T2DM between January 2011 and December 2011 in our center were retrospectively analyzed. Survival analysis was performed using the log-rank test and Cox proportional hazards regression analysis. RESULTS The patients with T2DM had higher MPV levels than the patients without T2DM. Furthermore, MPV was found to be significantly associated with differentiation T2DM from non-T2DM. In addition, survival analysis revealed that the disease-specific survival and overall survival of patients with MPV ≤ 8.0 fL were significantly shorter than that of those with MPV > 8.0 fL in diabetic patients. Multivariate analysis identified MPV as an independent poor prognostic factor for survival only in patients with T2DM not in patients without T2DM. CONCLUSIONS Our study first established a connection between MPV and BC patients with T2DM, suggesting that MPV was an independent prognostic factor and could be the biomarker for prognosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) having pre-existing type 2 diabetes (T2DM) have a poorer prognosis than those without T2DM. Moreover, accumulating evidence reveals that activated platelets play a crucial role in tumor and T2DM. The mean platelet volume (MPV) indicates platelet activation and is altered in malignancies. The present study aimed to investigate the clinical significance of MPV in patients with HCC having T2DM. METHODS This retrospective study performed between January 2010 and December 2013 included 331 patients with HCC (165 with T2DM and 166 without T2DM). The overall survival was compared, and the predictors of overall survival were analyzed. RESULTS The patients with T2DM had lower MPV levels than those without T2DM. Furthermore, the MPV levels significantly differentiated T2DM from non-T2DM. In addition, for patients with T2DM, the overall survival was significantly shorter in patients with low MPV levels than in those with high MPV levels. Multivariate analysis identified decreased MPV as an independent prognostic factor for overall survival only in patients with T2DM, but not in those without T2DM. CONCLUSION Reduced MPV was a prognostic factor for poor outcome in patients with HCC and T2DM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a marker of platelet activation. MPV and platelet count (PC) are negatively correlated, and their ratio (MPV/PC) is informative for the diagnosis of malignant tumors. However, the relationship between MPV/PC and colorectal cancer is unclear. This retrospective clinical study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of MPV/PC in colorectal cancer. METHODS Hematological examinations were performed at initial diagnosis in patients with colorectal cancer (n = 186) or adenomatous polyp (n = 132) and healthy controls (n = 108). Hematological parameters evaluated included white blood cells, red blood cells, hemoglobin, neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, PC, and MPV. Statistical analyses included Student's t-test, one-way ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis H test, chi-square tests, Spearman's correlation test and receiver operating characteristic (ROC). ROC curve was used to evaluate the diagnostic values of MPV and MPV/PC in colorectal cancer. RESULTS Among these groups, MPV was significantly lower in colorectal cancer than in adenomatous polyp (p = 0.002) and healthy controls (p < 0.001) but did not significantly differ between adenomatous polyp and healthy controls (p = 0.210). MPV/PC was lower in colorectal cancer compared with adenomatous polyp and healthy controls (p < 0.001) and in adenomatous polyp compared with healthy controls (p = 0.010). MPV did not significantly differ among colorectal cancer subgroups, while MPV/PC significantly differed between TNM stages and the presence/absence of lymph node metastasis. MPV/PC was negatively correlated with the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio(NLR) (p = 0.002) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio(PLR) concentration (p < 0.001). In the differential diagnosis between colorectal cancer and adenomatous polyp, MPV/PC produced a larger ROC curve than MPV, NLR or PLR alone. Using MPV/PC to distinguish between colorectal cancer and controls produced a larger AUC than using MPV or NLR alone. CONCLUSIONS MPV/PC may be useful for the diagnosis of colorectal cancer. However, further studies are warranted to include additional regions and more data, to assess the utility of MPV/PC as a novel diagnostic screening tool for colorectal cancer.

Abstract
Mean platelet volume (MPV), the most commonly used measure of platelet size, and is altered in patients with malignancies. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of MPV on overall survival (OS) of patients with locally advanced (Stage IIIA/B) inoperable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This retrospective study included patients who received concomitant chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) with cisplatin + etoposide regimen due to locally advanced stage IIIA/B NSCLC. The study included a total of 115 cases, consisting of 110 (95.7%) male and 5 (4.2%) female patients. The mean age of the patients was 61.3 ± 10.4 (22-82) years. ROC curve generated by MPV for OS yielded an AUC of 0.746 (95% CI 0.659-0.833), (p < 0.001). MPV was detected as >9 fL with a sensitivity of 74.4% and a specificity of 72.0%. In patients with stage IIIA, median OS was 45.0 months (95% CI 17.3-74.1) and 21 months (95% CI 10.6-31.3) in groups with MPV > 9.0 fL and ≤9.0 fL, respectively (p = 0.013). In patients with stage IIIB, median OS was 44.0 months (95% CI 13.8-60.6) and 16 months (95% CI 9.5-22.4) in groups with MPV > 9.0 fL and ≤9.0 fL, respectively (p = 0.036). ECOG performance score, total platelet count, and MPV were found as the most significant independent factors affecting survival (p < 0.001, p = 0.008, and, p = 0.034, respectively). In this study, we showed that decreased pre-treatment MPV was an independent risk factor for survival in NSCLC patients who were administered CCRT. As part of routine complete blood count panel, MPV may represent one of the easiest measuring tools as an independent prognostic marker for survival in locally advanced NSCLC.

Abstract
Objective: We aimed to investigate the relationship between trauma severity and platelet indices (PI) and white blood cell (WBC) count to identify traumatic brain injury (TBI) in children with minor head trauma (MHT). Materials and methods: This prospective study included children with acute isolated MHT who underwent head computed tomography (CT) based on Pediatric Emergency Care Research Network (PECARN) criteria. Mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), MPV to platelet ratio (MPV/PL), MPV to white blood cell ratio (MPV/WBC), and MPV to Neutrophil ratio (MPV/Neu) were evaluated. Results: 86 children with MHT and 245 controls were included the study. WBC, Neu count, MPV, MPV/WBC, MPV/Neu and MPV/PI ratios were statistically different among patients with abnormal CT, patients with normal CT and healthy controls (p < 0.05). For predicting abbreviated injury score (AIS) > 1, the AUC values of WBC, neutrophil, MPV/WBC and MPV/Neu were 0.746, 0.739, 0.726 and 0.724, respectively. Conclusion: In children with MHT who underwent CT, WBC, Neu counts, MPV/WBC and MPV/Neu ratios may be helpful for predicting the severity of trauma in pediatric emergency department.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Carotid body tumors (CBTs) are rare hypervascular benign tumors that originate from the paraganglia at the carotid bifurcation. The red cell distribution width (RDW), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and mean platelet volume (MPV) may serve as markers in inflammatory, cardiovascular, and neoplastic diseases. However, their prognostic value in CBTs is unknown. The purpose of this study was to assess the leukocyte count, MPV, RDW, and NLR before and after surgery in patients with CBTs. METHODS This retrospective trial included data from 80 patients with CBTs and 65 age-matched healthy controls. The leukocyte, neutrophil, lymphocyte and platelet counts, RDW, and MPV were extracted and NLR was calculated from the complete blood count results of participants. RESULTS The leukocyte and neutrophil counts as well as RDW levels were significantly increased in patients with CBTs compared with healthy controls (P = 0.005, P = 0.003, and P = 0.026; respectively). Patients with CBTs had lower lymphocytes counts (P = 0.241) and higher NLRs (P = 0.054); however, the difference was statistically insignificant. Moreover, no statistically significant difference was detected between groups in terms of platelet counts and MPV levels. Furthermore, the leukocyte count, platelet numbers, MPV, RDW, and NLR levels in patients with CBTs were not statistically significant after surgery (all; P > 0.05). CONCLUSION This is the first study that documents the increased RDW levels and leukocyte count in patients with CBTs. The combined use of RDW and the leukocyte count along with other clinical assessments can be used as a biomarker for CBTs. Further clinical trials with larger cases series are required to determine the actual predictive roles of these systemic biomarkers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Complete blood count parameters have been introduced to be diagnostic biomarkers for many cancer-related diseases associated with inflammatory process. The aim of our study was to detect whether there is any relationship between benign or malignant endometrial pathologies and complete blood count parameters. METHODS Four hundred and sixteen patients with a complaint of abnormal uterine bleeding who admitted to Zeynep Kamil Women and Children's Health Training and Research hospital between 2013 and 2016 and undergoing endometrial biopsy were included in the study. The patients were evaluated in three groups as follows: endometrial carcinoma (n: 97), endometrial hyperplasia (n: 135), and healthy control (n: 184) groups. All patients had a complete blood count on the day of biopsy or within the week of the biopsy, and the presence of a relationship between complete blood count parameters and benign or malignant endometrial disease was investigated. RESULTS Mean corpuscular volume measurements were found to be significantly higher in endometrial carcinoma (P = .018) and endometrial hyperplasia (P = .001) groups compared to the control group. While red cell distribution width measurements were found to be significantly lower in patients with endometrial carcinoma group compared to other groups (P < .01); the area under curve obtained for MPV is 58.7% to determine endometrial carcinoma. CONCLUSION Mean corpuscular volume and red cell distribution width are bio-markers that we can use as the predictive marker in patients with endometrial carcinoma and which are cheap, repeatable, and readily obtainable from complete blood count panels and promising.

Abstract
Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) represents the second most commonly diagnosed malignancy and the sixth leading cause for cancer related death among men worldwide. Although use of the prostate specific antigen (PSA) as a diagnostic marker has improved the detection and management of PCa, low specificity and sensitivity has limited its clinical efficacy. Moreover, elevated PSA is frequently observed in benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). Mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) are commonly used indicators of platelet activation. The purpose of current study was to investigate the ability of PSA, MPV, and PDW individually or in combination, to differentiate PCa from BPH. Materials and Methods: This study included 100 patients with PCa and 108 patients with BPH. We collected all participants’ clinical and laboratory characteristics. The benefit of adding MPV and PDW to a model with only PSA was evaluated as an increased in the area under the curve (AUC) obtained by receiver operating curve (ROC). Results: PCa patients had reduced MPV and elevated PSA and PDW levels compared to BPH patients. Single biomarkers had AUC values ranging from 0.683 for PDW to 0.865 for PSA. Moreover, the combination of PSA, MPV, and PDW increased the AUC to 0.935 (0.892-0.964) (p<0.0001), significantly higher than those of any single marker. Conclusions: The combined use of PSA, MPV, and PDW may be clinically useful in distinguishing between PCa and BPH.

Abstract
As a hallmark of platelet activation, mean platelet volume (MPV) has been identified to be associated with various malignancies. However, the correlation between MPV, mean platelet volume/platelet count ratio (MPR), and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains unclear. The aim of this study is to clarify the relevance of MPV and MPR in patients with locally advanced ESCC. Four hundred and fifty-seven cases with newly diagnosed locally advanced ESCC followed by radical surgery and 240 healthy subjects matched for age and gender were included in this study. We retrospectively compared various hematological variables between groups and analyzed the correlation between MPV, MPR, and patients' clinicopathologic characteristics. Preoperative MPV and MPR were found to be significantly decreased in locally advanced ESCC when compared to healthy controls, they were (8.14 ± 1.09 fL vs. 10.23 ± 0.78 fL, P < 0.0001) and (0.03875 ± 0.02645 vs. 0.04463 ± 0.00972, P = 0.001), respectively. In addition, patients with advanced tumor length (≥4 cm) tended to have lower MPV levels (8.03 ± 1.11 fL versus 8.33 ± 1.21 fL, P = 0.005), while there was no difference between other subgroups. Moreover, decreased MPR was significantly correlated with advanced tumor length (P < 0.001) when divided at a median of 0.03420. Decreased MPV and MPR were significantly associated with locally advanced ESCC. Thus, they might be helpful in screening and risk stratification for locally advanced ESCC in combination with other approaches.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the prognostic value of the combination of preoperative platelet count (PLT) and mean platelet volume (MPV) in patients with primary operable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We retrospectively analysed data from 546 patients with NSCLC who underwent complete resection at our institution from 2006 to 2010. Patients’ clinical characteristics and laboratory test data at initial diagnosis were collected. Both preoperative PLT and MPV (COP-MPV) were calculated on the basis of the data obtained using the recommended cut-off values of 300 × 109 L−1 and 11.0 fL, respectively. Patients with both an elevated PLT (≥300× 109 L−1) and a decreased MPV (<11.0 fL) were assigned a score of 2, and patients showing one or neither were allocated a score of 1 or 0, respectively. Multivariate analysis of the 9 clinical laboratory variables selected by univariate analysis revealed that preoperative COP-MPV was a significantly independent prognostic factor for overall survival (OS) (hazard ratio, 1.775; 95% confidence interval, 1.500–2.101; P< 0.001) and disease-free survival (DFS) (hazard ratio, 1.719; 95% confidence interval, 1.454–2.033; P< 0.001). In subgroup analyses for tumour pathological stage (I/II/IIIA) patients, we found that the level of COP-MPV was significantly associated with OS and DFS in each subgroup (P< 0.001, P< 0.001, P<0.001 for OS and P<0.001, P< 0.001, P=0.001 for DFS, respectively). In conclusion, the preoperative COP-MPV is a promising predictor of postoperative survival in patients with NSCLC and could classify these patients into three independent groups before surgery.

Abstract
Altered mean platelet volume (MPV) is found in several malignancies. Remarkably, there is little consensus on using the value of MPV in the prognostic evaluations of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The aim of this study is to examine the feasibility of MPV value as a prognostic indicator of RCC. The retrospective study recruited 306 consecutive RCC patients between January 2009 and December 2009. The relationships between MPV and clinicopathological characteristics were analyzed. Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression were used to evaluate the prognostic impact of MPV. Of the 306 RCC patients, low MPV levels were detected in 61 (19.9%) patients. Reduced MPV was associated with histology types, T classification, UCLA Integrated Scoring System (UISS) category, and Mayo clinic stage, size, grade, and necrosis score (SSIGN) category (P < 0.05). Patients with decreased MPV had significantly shorter survival time than patients with normal MPV (P < 0.001). Cox regression analysis revealed that reduced MPV was an independent prognostic factor for overall survival (hazard ratio, 1.758; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.083–2.855, P = 0.023). Moreover, the prognostic accuracy of TNM stage, UISS, and SSIGN prognostic models were improved when MPV was added. In conclusion, reduced MPV is identified as an independent predictor of adverse clinical outcome in RCC.

This study aimes to evaluate platelet and leucocyte indicators, such as the mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width, plateletcrit, white blood cell count, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio in nasopharyngeal cancer patients and also to evaluate the relationship between these indicators and nasopharyngeal cancer with distant metastasis. The medical records of 118 patients diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer in our hospital between January 2006 and August 2015 were reviewed. The nasopharyngeal cancer group was further sub grouped according to the presence or absence of distant metastasis and TNM (tumour - T, node - N, metastasis - M) classification. A control group consisted of 120 healthy patients. The platelet and leucocyte values at the time of the initial diagnosis were recorded. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and platelet distribution width values were significantly higher in the nasopharyngeal cancer group. But only platelet distribution width values were significantly higher in the nasopharyngeal cancer group with distant metastasis compared to the nasopharyngeal cancer group without distant metastasis. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and platelet distribution width values may increase in nasopharyngeal cancer. But only the platelet distribution width values may give us an idea about the distant metastasis in nasopharyngeal cancer.

Abstract
Background Altered mean platelet volume (MPV) is implicated in a wide range of cancers. However, the prognostic role of MPV in muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) remains largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the predictive significance of MPV in MIBC. Method The retrospective study included 218 consecutive MIBC patients between January 2009 and December 2009. The relationships between MPV and clinicopathological characteristics were analyzed. Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression were used to evaluate the prognostic impact of MPV. Result Of the 218 patients, low MPV levels were detected in 141 (64.7 %) patients. Reduced MPV was associated with T stage and histology grade (p < 0.05). In the Kaplan-Meier analysis, decreased MPV was significantly associated with a poorer overall survival (p = 0.007). In the multivariate Cox model, decreased MPV was an independent prognostic index for overall survival (HR=2.023, 95% CI=1.050-3.897, p = 0.025). Conclusion MPV is easily available in routine blood test. Our results demonstrated that reduced MPV could be regarded as a potential prognosis indicator for clinical outcome in MIBC.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between platelet indices [mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet count (PLT), platelet distribution width (PDW) and plateletcrit (PCT)] at diagnosis in osteosarcoma. Methods The information of 233 patients with osteosarcoma at diagnosis between 2007 and 2015 was retrospectively reviewed. Clinical parameters such as gender, age, size and site of tumor, and tumor necrosis rate after neoadjuvant chemotherapy were analyzed. Results No significant difference was noted in the mean values of MPV, PLT, PDW and PCT among stage I, II and III patients. In localized patients, the median disease-free survival (DFS) values were 42 and 22 months in the PLT<300×109/L and ≥300×109/L groups, respectively, but the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.2611). No difference in the DFS among the three different levels of MPV was observed. Conclusion No significantly different platelet indices were noted among the different stages. Although a shorter median DFS was found in localized patients with PLT≥300×109/L, there was still a lack of strong evidence to demonstrate the association between platelet indices and osteosarcoma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In this study, they investigated whether mean thrombocyte volume (MPV) and MPV/platelet count ratio have a prognostic significance in advanced NSCLC or not. METHODS A total of 496 NSCLC patients at stage IIIB/IV and did not meet exclusion criteria were included in the study. The demographic features (age, gender, smoking habit), clinical characteristics (performance status, weight loss, disease stage, first-line treatment regimen), laboratory tests (levels of hemoglobin, lactate dehydrogenase and calcium as well as MPV, MPV/platelet count ratio and counts of white blood cell, platelet), and histological features (histologic type, tumor grade) were recorded. RESULTS The MPV levels of all patients were determined as 10.2 {plus minus} 3.4 (range, 6.4-14.1 fL). With ROC curve analysis, the MPV/PC ratio was associated with a sensitivity of 67.8% and a specificity of 84.8% at a cutoff value of 0.47424 for presence of brain metastasis at the time of diagnosis. Univariate analysis showed that OS was significantly shorter in the group with an increased MPV level than in the other group (median OS time 6.8 months vs. 11.5 months, log-rank, P = .032). Multivariate analysis confirmed that an increased MPV level was an independent poor prognostic factor for OS (HR: 1.704, 95% CI: 1.274-3.415, P = .014). CONCLUSIONS Unlike results of previous studies, the study showed that increased MPV was an important prognostic factor in patients with NSCLC. Hence, an increased MPV level may be used as a prognostic biomarker to estimate for poor overall survival in patients with NSCLC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this study, we aimed to determine platelet indices such as platelet count (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), Plateletcrit (PCT) platelet count (PLT) in lung cancer cases, and evaluate any relationships between these parameters and stage or histologic types. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study covered 44 lung cancer patients and 47 healthy subjects. Platelet indices including PLT, PCT, MPV, PDW were estimated and compared with normal subjects. The results were evaluated statistically. RESULTS The PDW value was significantly higher in the cancer group compared to the control group; however, the values for PCT and MPV were lower. CONCLUSIONS We suggest potential use of platelet indices in diagnosis of lung cancer.

Abstract
Gastric cancer is the fourth most frequent cancer and the second cause of cancer-related mortalities worldwide. Platelets play an important and multifaceted role in cancer progression. Elevated mean platelet volume (MPV) detected in peripheral blood has been identified in various types of cancer. In the present study, we investigated the application value of MPV in early diagnostic and prognostic prediction in patients with resectable gastric cancer. In total, 168 patients with resectable gastric cancer were included and separated into the gastric cancer and healthy control groups according to median pre-operatic MPV value (MPV low, <10.51 or MPV high, ≥10.51). The results showed that the pre-operatic MPV level was significantly higher in gastric cancer patients compared with the healthy subjects. Low pre-operatic MPV level correlated with improved clinicopathological features, including decreased depth of invasion, less lymphonodus metastasis and early tumor stage. The Kaplan-Meier plots showed that the patients with higher pre-operatic MPV had decreased overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Surgical tumor resection resulted in a significant decrease in the MPV level. The patients whose MPV level decreased following surgery had an improved OS. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that the depth of invasion, lymphonodus metastasis, American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) stage, and changes in MPV following surgery were prognostic factors affecting OS, and the AJCC stage and pre-operatic MPV were prognostic factors affecting DFS. In conclusion, MPV measurement can provide important diagnostic and prognostic results in patients with resectable gastric cancer.

Abstract
Background Bone marrow examination may be required to discriminate causes of thrombocytopenia as hypoproductive or hyperdestructive. However, this procedure is invasive and time consuming. This study assessed the diagnostic value of Mean Platelet Volume (MPV), Platelet Distribution Width (PDW) and Platelet Large Cell-Ratio (P-LCR) in discriminating causes of thrombocytopenia as hypoproductive or hyperdestructive (Immune thrombocytopenia purpura). Method A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 83 thrombocytopenic patients (Plt < 150 × 109/L). From these, 50 patients had hypoproductive and the rest 33 Immune Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP). Age and sex matched 42 healthy controls were included as a comparative group. Hematological analysis was carried out using Sysmex XT 2000i 5 part diff analyzer. SPSS Version16 was used for data analysis. A two by two table and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to calculate sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, for a given platelet indices (MPV, PDW and P-LCR). Student t test and Mann Whitney U test were used to compare means and medians, respectively. Correlation test was used to determine associations between continuous variables. Results All Platelet indices were significantly higher in ITP patients (n = 33) than in hypoproductive thrombocytopenic patients (n = 50) (p < 0.0001). In particular MPV and P-LCR have larger area under ROC curve (0.876 and 0.816, respectively), indicating a better predictive capacity, sensitivity and specificity in discriminating the two causes of thrombocytopenia. The indices were still significantly higher in ITP patients compared to 42 healthy controls (p < 0.0001). A significant negative correlation was observed between platelet count and platelet indices in ITP patients, (p < 0.001). Conclusion MPV, PDW and P-LCR help in predicting thrombocytopenic patients as having ITP or hypoproductive thrombocytopenia. If these indices are used in line with other laboratory and clinical information, they may help in delaying/ avoiding unnecessary bone marrow aspiration in ITP patients or supplement a request for bone morrow aspiration or biopsy in hypoproductive thrombocytopenic patients.

Combination of platelet count and mean platelet volume (COP-MPV) predicts postoperative prognosis in both resectable early and advanced stage esophageal squamous cell cancer patients. Abstract
The aim of this study is to search the most powerful prognostic factor from routine blood test for esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESCC) patients. Multiple laboratory tests were evaluated including those reflecting red blood cell parameters (hemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and red blood cell distribution width (RDW)), platelet morphological parameters (mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet count (PLT)), blood coagulation status (D-dimer), and tumor biomarker (CA19-9). Known inflammatory indices (NLR and PLR) were also calculated. A total of 468 patients who were diagnosed with ESCC between December 2005 and December 2008 were retrospectively analyzed in this study. By utilizing univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard analyses, we found that PLT and MPV were significantly associated with overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) of ESCC patients, with optimal cutoff values of 212 and 10.6, respectively. Moreover, the combination of the preoperative PLT and MPV (COP-MPV) was calculated as follows: patients with both PLT (≥212 × 10(9) L(-1)) and MPV (≥10.6 fL) elevation were assigned a score of 2, and patients with one or neither were assigned a score of 1 and 0. The COP-MPV was an independent prognostic factor for OS (hazard ratio (HR) 0.378, 95 % confidence interval (CI) 0.241 to 0.593, P < 0.001, 0/2) and DFS (HR 0.341, 95 % CI 0.218 to 0.534, P < 0.001, 0/2) in multivariate analyses. In subgroup analyses for early (stages I and II) and locally (stage III) advanced stage patients, COP-MPV was found significantly associated with OS and DFS in each group (P = 0.025 and P = 0.018 for OS and P = 0.029 and P = 0.002 for DFS). In conclusion, we considered that COP-MPV is a promising predictor for postoperative survival in ESCC patients.

In the present study, we investigated the application value of MPV in the prediction of chemotherapy response and prognosis in patients with unresectable gastric cancer. A total of 128 patients with unresectable gastric cancer were included and divided according to the median values of baseline MPV (low MPV: <11.65 or high MPV: ≥11.65). A low baseline MPV level was correlated with reduced metastasis. The results showed that patients with a low baseline level of MPV improved response to chemotherapy. Changes in MPV were associated with therapeutic efficacy. Patients who remained in or were transferred into the low MPV level subgroup following first-line chemotherapy had improved response, compared to those remaining in or being transferred into the high MPV level group. The patients with a higher baseline MPV had decreased progression-free and overall survival ratios. Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed that baseline MPV was a prognostic factor affecting progression-free survival. In conclusion, the results showed that MPV measurements can provide important prognostic information for gastric cancer patients.

Abstract
AbstractObjective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between MPV and thyroid malignancy by comparing patients who underwent surgery for benign or malignant thyroid diseases. BACKGROUND Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a useful early indicator of platelet activation. Platelets differ in terms of functional activity and size. Large platelets are relatively new, more reactive and produce more thrombogenic factors. Therefore, in conditions that involve increased platelet activation, an increase in the proportion of young platelets and MPV is expected. PATIENTS AND METHODS This study involved 146 patients who underwent total thyroidectomy because of benign (99 patients) or malignant (47 patients) diseases of the thyroid. Data on age, sex, MPV, white blood cell (WBC) count, hemoglobin level and platelet count were collected retrospectively. RESULTS MPV was significantly higher in patients with malignant thyroid diseases than in those with benign thyroid diseases. Age, sex, hemoglobin level, WBC count and platelet count did not significantly differ between the two groups. CONCLUSION MPV was significantly higher in patients with thyroid malignancies than in patients with benign thyroid diseases. We propose that MPV might be an important predictive factor for thyroid malignancies. Further prospective studies with a larger number of patients in high-volume endocrine surgery centers are required to confirm our findings.

Abstract
An increased mean platelet volume (MPV) is an early marker of platelet activation. MPV was also shown to be associated with the pathophysiological characteristics of various types of cancer. A previous study demonstrated that MPV was significantly associated with the overall survival (OS) of patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, there has been no analysis of the prognostic effect of MPV on patients with resected NSCLC. The aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution of MPV to the survival of patients with completely resected NSCLC. We retrospectively analyzed 308 consecutive patients with NSCLC who underwent curative resection at Kitano Hospital. The associations between MPV and clinicopathological factors were assessed. We also evaluated the effect of MPV on survival, using the two-tailed log-rank test and the Cox proportional hazards model. A MPV value of 8.50 fl was considered to be the optimal cut-off value for prognosis. A low MPV was not associated with any other clinicopathological factors. The two-tailed log-rank test demonstrated that patients with a low MPV experienced a shorter disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) (P=0.011 and 0.001, respectively), compared to those with a high MPV. The multivariate analysis demonstrated that a low MPV was an independent unfavorable prognostic factor for DFS and OS [hazard ratio (HR)=1.713; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.070-2.742, P=0.025; and HR=2.835; 95% CI: 1.304-6.163, P=0.009, respectively)]. Therefore, we demonstrated that a low MPV predicted an unfavorable prognosis in patients with NSCLC following curative resection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a platelet volume index. Classically, MPV was recognized as a hallmark of platelet activation. Recent studies have revealed that the MPV and MPV/platelet count (PC) ratio can predict long-term mortality in patients with ischemic cardio-vascular disease. In addition, these indices were correlated with the pathophysiological characteristics of patients with various disorders, including malignant tumors. PATIENTS AND METHODS We retrospectively analyzed various hematological indices of patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution of platelet volume indices to survival in these patients. RESULTS A total of 268 patients were enrolled in the study. The median age of the patients was 68 years (range: 31-87 years). We compared various hematological indices between the NSCLC group and an age- and sex-matched comparator group. MPV was significantly decreased in the NSCLC group compared to the comparator group. In contrast, the PC was significantly increased in the NSCLC group. Consequently, the MPV/PC ratio was also decreased in the NSCLC group (0.397 vs. 0.501). In receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis, the MPV/PC ratio was associated with a sensitivity of 62.3% and a specificity of 74.6% at a cutoff value of 0.408730 (area under the curve [AUC], 0.72492)]. Univariate analysis revealed that overall survival (OS) was significantly shorter in the group with a low MPV/PC ratio than in the other group (median survival time [MST]: 10.3 months vs. 14.5 months, log-rank, P=0.0245). Multivariate analysis confirmed that a low MPV/PC ratio was an independent unfavorable predictive factor for OS (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.668, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.235-2.271, P=0.0008). CONCLUSION These data clearly demonstrate that the MPV/PC ratio was closely associated with survival in patients with advanced NSCLC.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the predictive efficiency of mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet size deviation width (PDW) for bone marrow failure (BMF) in thrombocytopenic patients. Platelet count, MPV and PDW data were retrieved from the records of 574 unselected thrombocytopenic patients from between March 2010 and March 2011, of which 182 patients with a platelet count <20×109/l were excluded from further study. A total of 392 valid thrombocytopenic patients were included in the present study and divided into two groups: 124 patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP) and 268 with BMF. The predictive efficiency of MPV and PDW were tested for the diagnosis of BMF. Significant differences were observed in the age distribution, platelet count, MPV and PDW between the ITP and BMF groups. The platelet count was positively correlated with MPV and PDW in the patients with ITP but not BMF. The negative-predictive values of MPV and PDW for BMF were 59.3 and 58.9%, respectively, with an MPV threshold of ≥11.0 fl and a PDW threshold of <16.0%. The positive-predictive values of MPV and PDW for BMF were 88.4 and 83.9%, respectively, with an MPV threshold <8.0 fl and a PDW threshold ≥17.5%. The areas under the curves (AUCs) of MPV and PDW were 0.281 and 0.700, respectively, for the diagnosis of BMF. The negative and positive-predictive values of MPV for BMF at different thresholds were not as conclusive as described in previous studies. MPV and PDW do not have sufficient specificity and sensitivity for the diagnosis of BMF in thrombocytopenic patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study is to evaluate in a retrospective manner the diagnostic value of mean platelet volume (MPV) in pancreatic adenocarcinomas and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs). PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 92 patients, who were admitted for pancreatic adenocarcinoma (n=76) and PNET (n=16) between March 2007 and December 2009, were analyzed retrospectively for demographics and clinical information. RESULTS Thirty-nine patients (51.3%) had a resectable, whereas 37 patients (48.7%) had an unresectable pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Nine patients (56.3%) had a non-functional PNET, 6 patients (37.5%) had an insulinoma, and the remaining one patient had a gastrinoma. The mean age was 59.3±10.5 for pancreatic adenocarcinomas and 45.1±10.6 for PNETs. The mean age at diagnosis was significantly higher in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinomas than the patients with PNET (p<0.001). Preoperative mean hemoglobin levels were significantly lower in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma than those with PNET (12.4±1.8g/dl vs 13.7±2.2g/dl), (p<0.013). The preoperative median MPV levels were significantly lower in patients with PNET 7.8fL (7.2-9.4) than in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinomas 8.6fL (6.6-13.5), (p<0.014). In subgroup analysis, a significant difference in MPV levels was mainly caused by the difference between pancreatic adenocarcinomas and non-functional PNETs (p=0.017). The cut-off value of MPV level for detection of PNETs was calculated as≤7.8fL using ROC analysis [Sensitivity: 66.7%, specificity: 75.9%, AUC: 0.734 (0.587-0.880) p=0.022]. In logistic regression analysis, independent predictive factors for determining PNETs in the differential diagnosis of pancreatic adenocarcinomas were calculated as age (OR=0.068, 95% CI: 0.012-0.398), Ca 19-9 (OR=0.039, 95% CI: 0.006-0.263), MPV (OR=0.595, 95% CI: 0.243-1.458), and hemoglobin (OR=1.317, 95% CI: 0.831-2.086). CONCLUSION Age, Ca 19-9, MPV, and hemoglobin levels have diagnostic value for distinguishing PNETs from pancreatic adenocarcinomas.

Abstract
Bone marrow metastasis is an important presentation of solid tumors affecting their prognosis and management. The present study was conducted to analyze the hematological indicators which can predict the marrow metastasis along with the comparison of bone marrow aspirate, touch imprint and trephine biopsy, to define an effective method for its early diagnosis. The study showed that there was statistical significant difference in mean of mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) between the cases and controls (P<0·001) and MPV at cut off of <8 fl showed significantly high positive predictive value (100%) and likelihood ratio (21·170) for bone marrow metastasis. Furthermore, bone marrow imprint cytology detected metastatic cells in 96% of cases. Thus, the study concluded that low MPV could be used as a probable indicator for bone marrow metastasis and the meticulously prepared touch imprint smears, along with bone marrow aspirate, provide an efficient method for rapid diagnosis of metastasis.

Abstract
Prostate cancer cells commonly spread through the circulation, but few successfully generate metastatic foci in bone. Osteoclastic cellular activity has been proposed as an initiating event for skeletal metastasis. Megakaryocytes (MKs) inhibit osteoclastogenesis, which could have an impact on tumor establishment in bone. Given the location of mature MKs at vascular sinusoids, they may be the first cells to physically encounter cancer cells as they enter the bone marrow. Identification of the interaction between MKs and prostate cancer cells was the focus of this study. K562 (human MK precursors) and primary MKs derived from mouse bone marrow hematopoietic precursor cells potently suppressed prostate carcinoma PC-3 cells in coculture. The inhibitory effects were specific to prostate carcinoma cells and were enhanced by direct cell-cell contact. Flow cytometry for propidium iodide (PI) and annexin V supported a proapoptotic role for K562 cells in limiting PC-3 cells. Gene expression analysis revealed reduced mRNA levels for cyclin D1, whereas mRNA levels of apoptosis-associated specklike protein containing a CARD (ASC) and death-associated protein kinase 1 (DAPK1) were increased in PC-3 cells after coculture with K562 cells. Recombinant thrombopoietin (TPO) was used to expand MKs in the marrow and resulted in decreased skeletal lesion development after intracardiac tumor inoculation. These novel findings suggest a potent inhibitory role of MKs in prostate carcinoma cell growth in vitro and in vivo. This new finding, of an interaction of metastatic tumors and hematopoietic cells during tumor colonization in bone, ultimately will lead to improved therapeutic interventions for prostate cancer patients.

Abstract
AbstractThe interaction between cancer cells and platelets has been known for a long time. Although platelet indices have been also investigated in several clinical settings, it has not been exactly demonstrated in cancer patients. We investigated platelet indices in colorectal cancer patients and compared with healthy subjects. Two hundred and twenty-one colorectal cancer patients and 110 healthy subjects were enrolled into the retrospective study. Data were obtained from computerized medical records of our hospital. Medical record review was performed for all patients regarding thrombocyte indices. Platelet count (325.000/mm3 ± 265.000/mm3 vs 267.000/mm3 ± 67.000/mm3; p=0.025; respectively) and plateletcrit (Pct) (0.25% ± 0.10 vs 0.21 ± 0.05; p<0.001; respectively) were increased in patients compared with healthy subjects while mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) were similar. The platelet indices were not related to existence of metastasis or acute abdomen. Platelet count and Pct, but not MPV and PDW, are elevated in colorectal cancer patients. Future studies that investigate platelet morphology, function, and putative role of platelets in tumorigenesis and metatasis should be established.
