Racism, colonialism and the implications for nursing scholarship: A discussion paper

Transformative justice to support truth and reconciliation within nurse-midwifery education

Nursing education holds a history framed in white supremacy and whiteness. Efforts to employ antiracist strategies have been hindered, largely due to an inability for faculty to acknowledge and hold accountability for racialized harms that occur within nursing educational structures. A nurse-midwifery program in the Pacific Northwest United States uncovered harm that impacted students and identified a need to respond and hold accountability. Guided by the framework of Transformative Justice, a truth and reconciliation process was implemented as a first step to better address racism within nursing and nurse-midwifery education. This paper describes the process to support other institutions in their work to address harms within nursing education.

Do no harm: A call to action by nurses to dismantle structural violence against LGBTQ+ youth

This commentary addresses structural violence - an overlooked and unrecognized harm within nursing. Structural violence within nursing practice refers to the violent impacts of racism, classism, homophobia, and transphobia as well as other biases on vulnerable and underprivileged groups. As one of the largest and most trusted health professions, collectively nursing has the power to leverage their influence to mitigate the harmful effects of structural violence when caring for LGBTQ+ youth.

The social relations of prayer in healthcare: Adding to nursing's equity-oriented professional practice and disciplinary knowledge

Although spiritual practices such as prayer are engaged by many to support well-being and coping, little research has addressed nurses and prayer, whether for themselves or facilitating patients' use of prayer. We conducted a qualitative study to explore how prayer (as a proxy for spirituality and religion) is manifest-whether embraced, tolerated, or resisted-in healthcare, and how institutional and social contexts shape how prayer is understood and enacted. This paper analyzes interviews with 21 nurses in Vancouver and London as a subset of the larger study. Findings show that nurses' kindness can buffer the loneliness and exclusion of ill health and in this way support the "spirit" of those in their care. Spiritual support for patients rarely incorporated prayer, in part because of ambiguities about permission and professional boundaries. Nurses' engagement with prayer and spiritual support could become a politicized site of religious accommodation, where imposition, religious illiteracy, and racism could derail person-centered care and consequently enact social exclusion. Spiritual support (including prayer) sustained nurses themselves. We propose that nursing's equity-oriented knowledge encompass spirituality and religion as sites of exclusion and inclusion. Nurses must be supported to move past religious illiteracy to provide culturally and spiritually sensitive care with clarity about professional boundaries and collaborative models of spiritual care.

Decolonisation of the nursing education curriculum in Gauteng province, South Africa: A concept analysis

Background

Decolonisation of the nursing education curriculum has become more important than ever. The nursing profession has been colonised since its founding era by Florence Nightingale. Victorian curriculum has been taught over decades in nursing. There is a knowledge gap of what decolonisation means in the profession.

Aim

The purpose of this article is to describe the concept analysis process that was followed to clarify the concept of 'decolonisation' of the curriculum, provide conceptual meaning in nursing education, and formulate a theoretical definition.

Setting

Nursing education practice in Gauteng.

Methods

Definitions, nature, characteristics, and uses of decolonisation were sought and the researchers explored 52 publications, which included dictionaries, encyclopaedias, thesauri, conference articles, research reports, journal articles and subject-related literature across multiple disciplines, to critically analyse the concept 'decolonisation'. A 10-year period from 2012 to 2022 was used to search several databases.

Results

Defining attributes that included antecedents, process and consequences of decolonisation emerged. The antecedents were awareness, identification of colonial knowledge and thought, colonial attitudes, colonialism, racism, exclusion, denial of colonial systems and curriculum and colonial legacies in nursing education. Events after decolonisation are called consequences.

Conclusion

The formulated theoretical definition of 'decolonisation' will be operationalised as further research takes place to come up with a conceptual framework for a decolonised socially just nursing curriculum.

Contribution

This study aimed to contribute towards the understanding of what decolonisation means within nursing education and lead to development of models, theories, and strategies on how decolonisation of the nursing curriculum can be undertaken.
