Skin Deep: The Potential of Microbiome Cosmetics

The interplay between the skin microbiome and its host is a complex facet of dermatological health and has become a critical focus in the development of microbiome cosmetics. The skin microbiome, comprising various microorganisms, is essential from birth, develops over the lifespan, and performs vital roles in protecting our body against pathogens, training the immune system, and facilitating the breakdown of organic matter. Dysbiosis, an imbalance of these microorganisms, has been implicated in a number of skin conditions such as acne, atopic dermatitis, and skin cancer. Recent scientific findings have spurred cosmetic companies to develop products that preserve and enhance the skin's microbial diversity balance. These products may incorporate elements like prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics, which are beneficial for the skin microbiome. Beyond topical products, there's increasing interest in ingestible beauty supplements (i.e. oral probiotics), highlighting the connection between the gut and skin. This review examines the influence of the microbiome on skin health and the emerging trends of microbiome skincare products.

Lactobacillus acidophilus-Fermented Jujube Juice Ameliorates Chronic Liver Injury in Mice via Inhibiting Apoptosis and Improving the Intestinal Microecology

SCOPE

Chronic liver diseases are clinically silent and responsible for significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Jujube has displayed various biological activities. Here, the therapeutic effect of Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus)-fermented jujube juice (FJJ) and the possible mechanism against chronic liver injury (CLI) in mice are further studied.

METHODS AND RESULTS

After the CCl4 -induced CLI mice are separately treated with L. acidophilus (LA), unfermented jujube juice (UFJJ), and FJJ, FJJ but not LA or UFJJ suppresses the liver index. By using H&E staining, immunofluorescence staining, RT-PCR, and western blotting, it is shown that LA, UFJJ, and FJJ intervention ameliorate hepatocyte necrosis, inhibit the mRNA levels of pro-inflammatory (NLRP3, Caspase-1, IL-1β, and TNF-α) and fibrosis-associated factors (TGF-β1, LXRα, and MMP2). Also, FJJ displays significant protection against mucosal barrier damage in CLI mice. Among the three interventions, FJJ exhibits the best therapeutic effect, followed by UFJJ and LA. Furthermore, FJJ improves dysbiosis in CLI mice.

CONCLUSIONS

This study suggests that FJJ exhibits a protective effect against CCl4 -induced CLI mice by inhibiting apoptosis and oxidative stress, regulating liver lipid metabolism, and improving gut microecology. Jujube juice fermentation with L. acidophilus can be a food-grade supplement in treating CLI and related liver diseases.

A Randomized, Controlled Clinical Trial of a Dermocosmetic Containing Vichy Volcanic Mineralizing Water and Probiotic Fractions in Subjects with Rosacea Associated with Erythema and Sensitive Skin and Wearing Protective Masks

Purpose

Rosacea is a common facial dermatosis, with flares induced by exposome factors. M89PF containing Vichy mineralizing water, probiotic fractions, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and tocopherol repairs the skin barrier and reinforces skin defences against exposome factors. This study assessed the benefit of M89PF in subjects with rosacea associated with erythema and sensitive skin during the Covid-19 pandemic using protective face masks.

Methods

M89PF was compared to usual skin care in a randomized, split-face study, for 30 days in subjects with rosacea associated with erythema and sensitive skin. Clinical evaluations included erythema, desquamation, skin tightness, dryness, burning sensation, itching, stinging, stinging test, and local tolerability. Instrument evaluations included erythema, skin hydration and TEWL. Subject satisfaction was also assessed.

Results

Erythema significantly improved with M89PF at both time points (p<0.01 at D15, and p<0.001 at D30). Skin sensitivity assessed by the skin stinging test improved significantly (p<0.01) with M89PF at D30, compared to baseline and usual skin care. Skin erythema, tightness, dryness, hydration and TEWL significantly improved (p≤0.05) with M89PF at D15 and D30, versus baseline and the untreated side. Subjects were highly satisfied with M89PF at D15 and D30. Tolerance was very good in all subjects.

Conclusion

In subjects with rosacea, M89PF significantly reduces erythema, skin tightness, dryness and TEWL, and improves skin hydration and skin sensitivity, even when using protective masks. M89PF is well tolerated and received high satisfaction ratings.
