Abstract
AIM This study examined the efficacy of a health education technology program on self-management adherence behavior and quality of life among people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). METHODS A randomized experimental study design was employed. A total of 110 subjects was recruited. The experimental group received a novel technology education program plus routine shared care. The control group received routine shared care alone. Quality of life and adherence to self-management behavior questionnaires were used to measure outcomes. A linear mixed-effects model was used to analyze changes in quality of life after controlling for pre-test effects. The odds ratio was calculated for differences in adherence behavior between the two groups. RESULTS The between-group mean difference in quality of life scores and adherence to physical activity comparing pre-test at 3 months follow-up showed significant progress at 3 months post-test compared with the control group. However, the increase in mean quality of life scores and adherence behavior at 6 months did not demonstrate a sustained between-group difference. CONCLUSION The results showed adherence to physical activity and improved quality of life in patients with T2D at 3 months post intervention. Therefore, the program can be used as an intensive model for diabetes shared care.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Hundreds of randomized controlled trials (RCT) on Chinese herbal drugs (CHDs) including Shexiang baoxin pill (BXP), compound Danshen dripping pill (DSP), compound Danshen tablet (DST), Suxiao jiuxin pill (JXP), Naoxintong capsule (NXT), Tongxinluo capsule (TXL), and Di'ao xinxuekang capsule (XXK) and conventional chemical drugs, such as isosorbide dinitrate (ISDN), for angina pectoris are available but have not been evaluated by a PRISMA-compliant network meta-analysis (NMA). AIM OF THE STUDY This study aimed to compare the efficacy of nine anti-anginal drugs through NMA on RCTs. METHODS RCTs of drug treatment for adult patients with angina pectoris for improvements in symptoms and electrocardiography were retrieved. Odds ratios and 95% credible intervals were computed to measure effect sizes. RCT quality was evaluated with the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Evidence synthesis was performed with Bayesian NMA. Essential analyses including subgroup analysis, sensitivity analysis, meta-regression analysis, publication bias analysis, and ranking analysis were conducted to assess the robustness of efficacies. Evidence strength was assessed with the GRADE approach. RESULTS A total of 331 RCTs with 36,467 participants were eligible. The overall quality of all included RCTs was low. Overall efficacy estimates from different approaches of evidential synthesis found that BXP, TXL, and DSP were more efficacious than DST and ISDN. Essential analyses indicated consistent efficacy estimates, insignificant publication bias, and corroborative ranking results. The overall GRADE evidence strength was low. CONCLUSION This comprehensive Bayesian NMA found BXP, TXL, and DSP to be the top three candidates among the seven tested CHDs for treating adults suffering from angina pectoris. However, the quality and the evidence strength of eligible RCTs were low. Further high-quality RCTs with more outcome measures and their NMAs are warranted. REGISTRATION PROSPERO CRD42014007035.

Abstract
Background: This study aimed to assess the overall reporting quality of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) formulas for patients with diabetes, and to identify factors associated with better reporting quality. Methods: Four databases including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and Web of Science were systematically searched from their inception to December 2022. The reporting quality was assessed based on the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) statement and its CHM formula extension. The overall CONSORT and its CHM formula extension scores were calculated and expressed as proportions separately. We also analyzed the pre-specified study characteristics and performed exploratory regressions to determine their associations with the reporting quality. Results: Seventy-two RCTs were included. Overall reporting quality (mean adherence) were 53.56% and 45.71% on the CONSORT statement and its CHM formula extension, respectively. The strongest associations with reporting quality based on the CONSORT statement were multiple centers and larger author numbers. Compliance with the CHM formula extension, particularly regarding the disclosure of the targeted traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) pattern (s), was generally insufficient. Conclusion: The reporting quality of RCTs in CHM formulas for diabetes remains unsatisfactory, and the adherence to the CHM formula extension is even poorer. In order to ensure transparent and standardized reporting of RCTs, it is essential to advocate for or even mandate adherence of the CONSORT statement and its CHM formula extension when reporting trials in CHM formulas for diabetes by both authors and editors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Integrative Chinese and Western medicine (ICWM) is commonly used for the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC) in clinical practice. However, it is unclear whether the details of ICWM interventions, such as selection rationale, implementation design, and potential interactions, were adequately reported. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the quality of reporting in the ICWM interventional randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of UC and to identify the common problems if any. METHODS Through a search of 10 international electronic databases, we identified RCTs of UC with ICWM interventions published in English or Chinese from the inception date of each database up to 16 June 2023. Literature screening was strictly conducted based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the Population, Concept, and Context (PCC) framework. The general characteristics of the included studies were described. The quality of reporting was assessed according to three checklists, including the CONSORT (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials) with 36 items (except for one item 1b about abstract), the CONSORT for Abstracts (17 items), and a self-designed ICWM-related checklist (27 items covering design rationale, intervention details, outcome assessments, and analysis). The reporting scores of RCTs published before and after 2010 were compared. RESULTS A total of 1458 eligible RCTs were included. For the reporting compliance, the median score (interquartile ranges) of the CONSORT (72 score in total), the CONSORT for Abstract (34 score), and ICWM-related (54 score) items was 21 (18-25), 13 (12-15), and 18 (15-21), respectively. Although the time period comparisons showed that reporting quality of included publications improved significantly after the CONSORT 2010 issued (P < 0.01), more than 50% of items were evaluated as poor quality (reporting rate < 65%) among each checklist, especially in the CONSORT for Abstract and ICWM-specific items. CONCLUSION Although CONSORT appears to have enhanced the reporting of RCTs in UC, the quality of ICWM specifics is variable and in need of improvement. Reporting guidelines of the ICWM recommendations should be developed to improve their quality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) play an indispensable role during the pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), with an increasing number of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) designed and performed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of TCM for COVID-19. This study aimed to critically appraise the quality of currently available RCTs of TCM for COVID-19. METHODS RCTs of TCM for COVID-19 were searched from three databases by two investigators and selected according to pre-established inclusion and exclusion criteria. General information of included studies was presented by applying descriptive statistics. The methodological and reporting quality of eligible RCTs was critically evaluated based on the risk of bias assessment tool 2 (RoB2) and CONSORT Extension for TCM (CONSORT-CHM Formulas 2017), respectively. The differences of risks and main general information were compared between RCTs published in English and Chinese journals. Microsoft Excel 2019 and SPSS were used for the statistical analysis. A result with p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS This study finally included 64 RCTs with a total of 10858 participants investigating TCM for COVID-19. All 64 RCTs were evaluated as moderate-to-low RoB including 27 RCTs with high bias, 26 RCTs with some concerns, and 11 with low bias. Results of reporting quality appraisal by CONSORT-CHM Formulas 2017 showed that 61 (95%) RCTs reported more than 18 (50%) items, and 14 (22%) RCTs reported more than 26 (70%) items among all 38 items. Forty-two RCTs were approved by ethics committees and 47 RCTs reported the informed consent information. Twenty-five RCTs and 39 RCTs provided information on trial registration and funding resources, respectively. The quality of 44 RCTs published in Chinese was significantly worse than that of 20 RCTs published in English, especially in the following considerations including the overall RoB, ethics approved, informed consent, trial register, and reporting quality with CONSORT-CHM Formulas 2017. CONCLUSION The overall quality of RCTs investigating TCM for COVID-19 was appraised as moderate-to-high that was substandard and needs to be continuously improved, especially for RCTs published in Chinese, in the future.

Abstract
Background: The successful application of randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled studies requires maximum blinding. Organoleptic properties of the placebo should be similar to the drug, making it difficult to distinguish between the two. The uniqueness of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) preparations makes it challenging to prepare placebo. Evaluation of the TCM placebo simulation effect can determine whether the preparation of placebo can be genuinely blind in clinical trials. There is still a lack of well-established methods to evaluate TCM placebos. Hence, this study aimed to explore the evaluation methodology of TCM placebo simulation. Methods: An independent evaluation method and three comparative evaluation methods were proposed, and three dosage forms (oral liquid, capsule, and granule) were tested. The independent evaluation, in which each person was given an experimental drug or a placebo, gave an overall assessment of organoleptic properties in a blind state. We comparatively evaluated the similarity in organoleptic properties between the experimental drug and placebo. According to different distribution methods, we divided comparative evaluation methods into three. In method 1, the evaluator was given the experimental drug and placebo and was told that there must be a placebo among them. In method 2, each evaluator was randomly assigned to the combination group or two investigational drugs group. In method 3, the evaluator was assigned to a set of three coded samples, numbered by random three-digit numbers, each different, two of which were identical, and the two samples were equally frequent. Results: In the independent evaluation, there was no difference between TCM placebo and experimental drugs in a blind state at the level of p = 0.05. Even though the comparative evaluation methods enabled identification of potential differences between the two samples, methods 2 and 3 were better than method 1 in eliminating psychological factors. Also, in method 3, the completely random method combined with the blind method eliminated the subjectivity and objectivity bias and improved the experiment's credibility compared with the previous two methods. Conclusion: Regardless of the methods that could evaluate the placebo's simulated effect in actual clinical trials, we suggest that independent evaluation and comparative evaluation (method 3) should be combined to reflect better whether the placebo is truly blind.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Chinese patent medicine (CPM) has been widely used to treat eczema in mainland China for decades. This study aims to investigate circulating CPM for eczema in mainland China and to evaluate the reporting quality of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of them by using the CONSORT-CHM formulas 2017 (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials for Chinese herbal medicine formulas 2017). METHODS Circulating CPM with the indication for eczema was selected by searching three drug databases and confirmed by contacting the manufacturers. RCTs for the treatment of eczema with CPM were selected in four Chinese literature databases and four English literature databases from their inception to August 31, 2019. The reporting quality of included RCTs was assessed based on the CONSORT-CHM formulas 2017. A univariate analysis was conducted to identify the factors associated with the reporting quality. RESULTS A total of 70 circulating CPMs had the indication for eczema. Among them, 21 CPMs with 144 RCTs reached the eligible criteria. The mean overall quality score (OQS) of 144 RCTs was 19.85 ± 2.73, which was much less than the maximum score of 38. Of the 38 items, 12 items were reported in over 70% of the trials, 6 items were reported in 50%-70% of the trials, and 16 items were reported in less than 50% of the trials. Publication after 2015 (P < 0.001) and the first author from a university hospital (P=0.010) were associated with the better reporting quality. CONCLUSION There are a lot of circulating CPMs with the indication for eczema in mainland China, but both the quantity and the reporting quality of RCTs regarding those CPMs are suboptimal. It is necessary that authors and journal editors learn and adhere to the CONSORT-CHM formulas 2017 to enhance the reporting quality of RCTs for the treatment of eczema with CPM.

Abstract
PURPOSE Reporting guidelines (eg, Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials [CONSORT] statement) are intended to improve reporting standards and enhance the transparency and reproducibility of research findings. Despite accessibility of such guidelines, researchers are not required to adhere to them. Our goal was to determine the current status of reporting quality in the medical literature and examine whether adherence of reporting guidelines has improved since the inception of reporting guidelines. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eight reporting guidelines, such as CONSORT, Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), STrengthening the Reporting of OBservational studies in Epidemiology (STROBE), Quality of Reporting of Meta-analysis (QUOROM), STAndards for Reporting of Diagnostic accuracy (STARD), Animal Research: Reporting In Vivo Experiments (ARRIVE), Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards (CHEERS), and Meta-analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE) were examined. Our inclusion criteria included reviews published between January 1996 to September 2016 which investigated the adherence to reporting guidelines in the literature that addressed clinical trials, systematic reviews, observational studies, meta-analysis, diagnostic accuracy, economic evaluations, and preclinical animal studies that were in English. All reviews were found on Web of Science, Excerpta Medical Database (EMBASE), MEDLINE, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL). RESULTS Among the general searching of 26,819 studies by using the designed searching method, 124 studies were included post screening. We found that 87.9% of the included studies reported suboptimal adherence to reporting guidelines. Factors associated with poor adherence included non-pharmacological interventions, year of publication, and trials concluding with significant results. Improved adherence was associated with better study designs such as allocation concealment, random sequence, large sample sizes, adequately powered studies, multiple authorships, and being published in journals endorsing guidelines. CONCLUSION We conclude that the level of adherence to reporting guidelines remains suboptimal. Endorsement of reporting guidelines by journals is important and recommended.

Abstract
Background We are witnessing an exponential increase in the number of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reported from mainland China. The increase is particularly notable in the field of new generation antidepressants and antipsychotics. Several previous studies have raised doubts regarding their quality. However, the quality of most recent RCTs published in China may have improved. Methods We searched RCTs that examined new generation antidepressants and antipsychotics published between 2013 and 2016 in the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), the largest database of scientific publications in China. We interviewed the authors of a random subset of the identified references. We assessed the methodological rigor of each study based on the published reports and telephone interviews with the authors using six methodological domains adapted from the Cochrane’s risk of bias tool. Results The final sample consisted of 138 studies, for which we interviewed 58 authors; the authors of 51 studies declined the interview, and the authors of 29 studies could not be contacted. The 51 studies with refused interviews were significantly less likely to be reported from university-affiliated hospitals and were less likely to be published in Chinese core journals. Based on the published reports, most of the 58 studies were assessed to be at unclear risk of bias in most methodological domains. After the interview, only 10 studies were assessed to be at low risk of bias for sequence generation and allocation concealment. Assuming that the studies for which the authors declined interviews had an unclear risk, the proportion of RCTs at low risk of bias in both sequence generation and allocation concealment was 9.2% (10/109, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.0 to 16.2). The interviews indicated that the studies were at high risk of bias for most of the other domains. Conclusion In general, RCTs that evaluate new generation antidepressants or antipsychotics and are indexed in the CNKI continue to be of low quality. When conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses in this field, it would be wise to include a specialist from China as a coresearcher to help assess the risk of bias in the identified studies. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the reporting quality of acupuncture trials for knee osteoarthritis (KOA), and explore the factors associated with the reporting. METHOD Three English and four Chinese databases were searched from inception to December 2016 for randomized control trials testing effects of acupuncture for knee osteoarthritis. We used the standard CONSORT (2010 version), CONSORT Extension for Non-Pharmacological Treatments, and STRICTA for measuring the quality of reporting. Using pre-specified study characteristics, we undertook regression analyses to examine factors associated with the reporting quality. RESULTS A total of 318 RCT reports were included. For the standard CONSORT, ten items were substantially under-reported (reported in less than 5% of RCTs), including specification of important changes to methods after trial commencement (0.6%), description of any changes to trial outcomes (0.0%), implementation of interim analyses and stopping guidelines (0.6%), statement about why the trial ended or was stopped (1.6%), statement about the registration status (4.4%), accessibility of full trial protocol (4.7%), implementation of randomization (4.7%), description of the similarity of interventions (3.5%), conduct of ancillary analyses (3.8%) and presentation of methods for additional analyses (4.4%). Four of the STRICTA items were under-reported (reported in less than 10% of RCTs), including description of acupuncture style (8.5%), presentation of extent to which treatment varied (1.3%), statement of practitioner background (7.2%) and rationale for the control (9.1%). For CONSORT Extension, the reporting was poor across all items (reported in less than 10% of trials). Trials including authors with expertise in epidemiology or statistics, published in English, or enrolling patients from multiple centers were more likely to have better reporting. CONCLUSIONS The reporting in RCTs of acupuncture for KOA was generally poor. To improve the reporting quality, journals should encourage strict adherence to the reporting guidelines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The numbers of articles reporting randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on viral hepatitis in China have been increasing, but there have been few systematic studies evaluating the reporting quality of RCTs in this field. This study was performed to assess the reporting quality of RCTs on the treatment of hepatitis B and C in China from 1991 to 2015. METHODS Articles published between January 1991 and December 2015 were identified via the PubMed, MEDLINE, and Embase databases using the key words "randomized clinical trials", "treatment", "therapy", "hepatitis B", "HBV", "hepatitis C", "HCV", "China", and "Chinese". The reporting quality was assessed against the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) checklist. RESULTS In total, 211 RCTs on the treatment of hepatitis B or C were included. The number of articles focusing on these RCTs increased rapidly over time, while the reporting quality improved steadily over time. Overall, compliance with the key components of the CONSORT checklist was low, with only 8.5%, 3.8%, and 11.4% of the articles fulfilling the reporting requirements of randomization, allocation concealment, and blinding, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Both the number and the quality of RCT articles were found to have increased steadily over the last two decades. However, compliance with the key components of the CONSORT checklist still needs improvement. It is hoped that the results of this study will lead to improvements in the reporting quality of clinical trials on hepatitis B and C in China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The majority of studies of integrative treatment for colorectal cancer (CRC) have been published in Chinese journals. These studies indicate potential benefits, but concerns have been raised over the quality of trials published in Chinese journals. The CONSORT statement provides a guide for study reporting that has been endorsed by more than 400 international journals. Previous studies have used the CONSORT checklist to assess the quality of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). OBJECTIVES This study focused on RCTs of integrative and traditional medicine for CRC published in Chinese journals and assessed: (1) the overall quality of reporting with a focus on methodological aspects; (2) change over time; and (3) the influence of study funding, level of institution conducting the trial, rank of the journal, and the length of the article. DESIGN Searches of seven databases identified RCTs. Quality was assessed using CONSORT 2010 with adaptations to facilitate scoring. Additional codes were added for publication year, hospital rank, report length, and status of the journal. Scores of each checklist item, total scores, and scores for eight items associated with RCT methodology were calculated. RESULTS Eighty-one studies were included in the main analyses. The RCT methodology subgroup scores were significantly higher in studies: with public funding, conducted by authors from university hospitals, published in higher ranked journals, and in longer articles. CONCLUSIONS Few Chinese journals mention CONSORT in their author guidelines. In these RCTs on CRC better reporting of RCT methodology was associated with ranking of the journal as "core," public funding of the RCT, and first or correspondent author from a university hospital but the quality of reporting had not significantly improved in 15 years. As the volume of scientific information produced in China grows, it is imperative that there is growth in the quality of this information.
