Explaining the colour of natural healthy gingiva

To examine the differences between natural gingival colour in men and women. To determine the degree of predictability of changes in the gingival colour coordinates recorded for healthy gingiva, according to age, long-term medication, frequency of toothbrushing, and smoking habits. The CIELAB colour coordinates were recorded using a spectrophotometer for 360 Caucasian adult participants (aged 18-92 years), in three zones of the healthy attached gingiva of the maxillary central incisor. Regression models were created for each zone and each sex, taking the L*, a* and b* coordinates as dependent variables and age, frequency of toothbrushing, smoking habits (0-non-smoker; 1-smoker) and whether participants were taking long-term medication (0-no; 1-yes) as independent variables. The statistical analysis was conducted with SPSS version 26.0, using multiple regression models. Statistically significant differences between men and women were found only for colour coordinate b*, in all three zones. The only colour coordinate on which the predictor variables had a significant effect was the L* coordinate. In men, age and long-term medication had the greatest effect as predictors (maximum R2 = 0.149). In women, frequency of toothbrushing was the strongest predictor in the predictive models (maximum R2 = 0.099). The colour of gingiva in men contained a larger amount of blue, given that significantly lower values for colour coordinate b* were recorded in men than women, although this difference lacked clinical implications. For both sexes, the regression models produced had a modest predictive capacity. The L* coordinate was the dependent variable that showed the greatest predictability.

Dental color measurement to estimate age in adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Age estimation is a major challenge in anthropology and forensic odontology laboratories, as well as in judicial settings, as one of the tools used in human identification. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of age estimation methods based on the accurate measurement of tooth color changes. A systematic review was carried out following the recommendations of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses and in compliance with Cochrane criteria recommendations (PROSPERO registration number CRD 42022343371). An electronic search was performed in the following databases: Pubmed, Web of Science, Medline, Current Contents Connect, SciELO, KCI-Korean Journal Database, Derwent Innovations Index and Russian Citation Index. The search strategy yielded a total of 18 articles. A randomized meta-analysis model of the results for the CIE L*a*b* color variables stratified by age (less than 30 years, 30-60 years, 60 years and older) was performed with 9 of the 18 studies included in this systematic review. According to our results, sex and location of color measurement are the most influential factors in color estimation. All studies were carried out in healthy anterior teeth by spectrophotometry as the most commonly used method for color measurement, with CIE L*a*b* being the most commonly analyzed parameters. Studies based on age as a dependent variable showed R2 values between 0.28 and 0.56, being higher in ex vivo teeth. Studies based on age as an independent variable showed R2 values ranging from 0.10 to 0.48. The random model showed high heterogeneity for the L*, a* and b* parameters in all age groups, which is explained by discrepancies in age range and non-standardized conditions for color measurement. This systematic review highlights the need to protocolize age estimation studies that measure tooth color, in order to apply this method in different forensic settings.

Satisfaction with dental appearance in two cohorts of 75-year-olds examined in 2007 and 2017: A repeated cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Satisfaction with dental appearance plays an important role in the self-esteem and psychological well-being of the elderly, the significance of which the attending dentist may not always be fully cognisant of.

OBJECTIVES

To assess the level of satisfaction with dental appearance, its associated factors and temporal changes in two cohorts of 75-year-old Swedes born 10 years apart.

METHODS

In 2007, a questionnaire was mailed to all those living in Örebro and Östergötland counties, Sweden, who were born in 1932 (n = 5195), and in 2017 to all born in 1942 (n = 7204). The evaluation was carried out with a global question 'Are you satisfied with the appearance of your teeth?', and four attitude-related statements about dental appearance.

RESULTS

About 80% in both cohorts were 'very satisfied' or 'to large extent satisfied' with their dental appearance. The 1932 cohort was significantly more concerned about their dental appearance than the 1942 cohort, and women were generally also significantly more concerned than men. In the regression analysis, 'very satisfied' with dental appearance was predicted by good chewing efficiency, having complete dentures, no impact from Oral Impacts on Daily Performance, disagreement that 'minor esthetic imperfections of the teeth have no importance, only they should function well', better perceived general health than same-aged peers and belonging to the 1932 cohort.

CONCLUSION

Satisfaction with dental appearance among 75-year-olds was generally high, with attitudes varying by gender and temporally. Women and the earlier-born generation (1932) were more concerned about dental appearance than men and the later-born generation (1942), respectively.

Tooth shade variation in Indian population: An objective guide to age estimation

Introduction

The color of the teeth is affected by chronological age due to the variations of the hard and soft tissue structure of the teeth. There are very few studies have assessed the shade of the Enamel and correlated it with the age changes. Hence the study aimed to assess the enamel shade with the aging in the individual.

Materials and methods

The central incisors of 388 individuals (5-78 years) were assessed for tooth color using a VITA 3D master shade guide and the Hue, Value and Chroma were noted. Mean grey values of the teeth were obtained by image manipulation using Image J software and normalized using the values obtained from the 18% contrast grey card. Chi square tests and linear regression analysis is used to find associations with age and tooth shade variations.Results: The teeth had higher score of Hue, Value and Chroma in older individuals. The tooth shade tended to shift towards redder hue with older age group. Simple linear regression analysis showed a significant correlation of age with normalized grey value in association with the shade parameters. (r = 0.717, SEE = 12.322 years)Conclusion: Tooth color changes with age and the mean age in grey values and shade guides can be a useful tool for age estimation.
