Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to compare the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) and failure mode of 4 different universal adhesive systems (UAs) on human dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study sectioned the occlusal thirds of 32 human third molars and divided them into 4 groups based on the adhesive system used. Group A: Palfique Universal Bond, Group B: Single Bond Universal, Group C: All-Bond Universal, and Group D: One Coat 7 Universal. The specimens underwent a 10,000-cycle thermocycling ageing process prior to testing (n = 32). Afterwards, 8 beams were obtained per group and subjected to µTBS testing using a digital universal testing machine at a speed of 1 mm/min. The microtensile bond strength values were analysed in Megapascals (MPa), and the failure mode was evaluated using a stereomicroscope. Welch's parametric ANOVA with robust variance and the Games-Howell post hoc test were used for µTBS comparisons, and Fisher's exact test was used to determine the association between adhesive type and failure mode. The significance level was set at P < .05. RESULTS Group D showed a significantly higher µTBS than groups A (P < .001) and B (P < .001), but no significant difference was observed with group C (P= .075). Furthermore, groups B and C showed significantly higher µTBS than group A (P< .001 and P < .001, respectively), but there was no significant difference between groups B and C (P = .132). Additionally, group A exhibited a significant association with an adhesive failure mode (P < .05), whereas groups B, C, and D were significantly associated with a mixed failure mode (P < .05). CONCLUSION The One Coat 7 Universal adhesive system showed higher microtensile bond strength values and higher chemical interaction with dentin compared to Palfique Universal Bond and Single Bond Universal. However, no significant differences were observed compared to All-Bond Universal.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Self-etching dental adhesives bond with dentin through chemical reactions with calcium. This study assessed bond strength (BS) using microtensile (µTBS) and microshear (µSBS) tests on sound and post-radiotherapy dentin, with dental adhesives containing different functional monomers. METHODS Sound dentin (SD) and post-radiotherapy irradiated dentin (ID) were tested with two adhesive systems: Clearfil SE Bond (SE, 10-MDP-based) and FL Bond II (FL, containing carboxylic and phosphonic monomers with S-PRG bioactive particles). The tests occurred initially (24 h) and six months later; fracture mode was also analyzed (40x). Ninety-six human molars were randomly assigned (n = 12), and half were irradiated with a 70 Gy radiation dose. For µTBS test, teeth were bonded, restored and sectioned them into beams (0.64 mm2). The µSBS test used filled transparent cylindrical matrices with resin composite and light-cured them after dental adhesive applications. Three-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (p < 0.05) analyzed the data. RESULTS µTBS showed a significant substrate x adhesive interaction (p < 0.001), while µSBS was significant for all factors (p = 0.006). SE and FL performed better on SD and ID, respectively, in the µTBS test. As for µSBS, SE showed higher values on ID (p < 0.05). Lower BS values occurred for SD-FL and ID-SE after six months. CONCLUSION Dental adhesive performance varied based on substrate type and test method. FL was more stable for ID in µTBS, while SE excelled in µSBS. CLINICAL RELEVANCE As post-radiotherapy irradiated dentin becomes more vulnerable, self-etching systems based on functional monomer and bioactive ingredients may exhibit appropriate bonding to this altered substrate.

Abstract
Dental caries continues to be a public health issue, especially more evident in underserved populations throughout the U.S. Unfortunately, especially with an aging population, hundreds of thousands of resin composite restorations are replaced each year due to recurring decay and fracture. According to several cohort studies, the average life span of this type of restoration is 10 years or less, depending on the caries risk level of the patient and the complexity of the restorative procedure. Any new material development must depart from the simple restoration of form paradigm, in which the filling is simply inert/biocompatible. This review will discuss novel antibiofilm structures, based on a targeted approach specifically against dysbiotic bacteria. Biofilm coalescence can be prevented by using glycosyl transferase - GTF inhibitors, in a non-bactericidal approach. On the tooth substrate side, MMP-inhibiting molecules can improve the stability of the collagen in the hybrid layer. This review will also discuss the importance of testing the materials in a physiologically relevant environment, mimicking the conditions in the mouth in terms of mechanical loading, bacterial challenge, and the presence of saliva. Ultimately, the goal of materials development is to achieve durable restorations, capable of adapting to the oral environment and resisting challenges that go beyond mechanical demands. That way, we can prevent the unnecessary loss of additional tooth structure that comes with every re-treatment. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: While proper restorative technique and patient education in terms of diet and oral hygiene are crucial factors in increasing the longevity of esthetic direct restorations, materials better able to resist and interact with the conditions of the oral environment are still needed. Reproducing the success of dental amalgams with esthetic materials continues to be the Holy Grail of materials development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Occlusal veneer had been evaluated for mechanical properties using lithium disillicate. However, studies evaluating the mechanical properties of occlusal veneer with different preparation designs and ceramic materials are lacking. So, this in vitro study aimed to evaluate the fracture resistance of occlusal veneers with two designs fabricated from two different ceramic materials. MATERIAL AND METHODS Fourty mandibular third molars were distributed to 2 groups (n = 20) according to preparation design: group (O) anatomical occlusal reduction and group (OA) anatomical occlusal and 1 mm axial reduction. Each group was additionally subdivided into two subgroups (n = 10) according to ceramic materials; in subgroup X, lithium disilicate (e.max CAD, Ivoclar AG, Schaan, Liechtenstein) was used, and in subgroup S, zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) (Vita Suprinity, VitaZahnfabrik, Bad Säckingen, Germany) was used. All specimens were cemented with a light-cure resin cement (Choice 2, Bisco, Schaumburg, USA). 5000 thermocycles were applied to all specimens with both temperatures of 5 °C and 55 °C in two water baths; the dwell time was 30s at each bath, and the transfer time was 10s. Then all specimens were subjected to a fatigue simulation under dynamic loading of 200 N for 250,000 cycles. A universal testing machine (5500R/1123, Instron, Norwood, USA) was used to evaluate the fracture strength with a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. All data were analyzed statistically by using a two-way ANOVA, and for some violations of assumptions, these results were compared with those obtained by the nonparametric test (Scheirer Ray Hare) (α = 0.05). RESULTS A statistically significantly higher fracture resistance in the 'OA' (3389 N) compared to the 'O' (2787 N) group regardless of the ceramic material (P < .001) and a statistically significantly higher fracture resistance in the 'X' (3295 N) compared to the 'S' (2881 N) regardless of the preparation design (P = .015). CONCLUSIONS For occlusal veneers, all preparation designs and materials (such as Vita Suprinity and e.max CAD) had clinically acceptable fracture resistance values that were greater than the maximal biting forces. On the other hand, the e.max CAD with occlusal veneer, including axial reduction design, demonstrated the maximum fracture resistance value. Finally, no relationship between fracture strength and mode of failure was found.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to evaluate the volume of dentin removal and the volume of remnants of restorative material after the removal of an esthetic restorative coronal set and cervical barrier in endodontically treated mandibular molars with the aid of different magnification methods using 3-dimensional (3D) micro-computed tomographic (micro-CT) morphometric analysis. METHODS A sample of 30 mandibular first molars (N = 30) was used. All teeth were endodontically treated, and the specimens were initially scanned using micro-CT imaging and reconstructed. The molars were filled by a single-cone technique, and immediately the material at the initial 2-mm cervical level was removed. Cervical barriers were confected using ionomer glass cement with fluorescein 0.1%, filling the 2 mm at the cervical level of the canals and an additional 2 mm as the base. The coronal restoration set was performed using esthetic resin composites. A simulated tooth aging process was performed with 20,000 thermocycling cycles. The sample was distributed into the following 3 groups (n = 10) for the removal of the restoration set and cervical barrier with diamond burs based on the magnification aid: no magnification aid (naked eye), operative microscope aid, and REVEAL device (Design for Vision Inc, Bohemia, NY) aid. After removal, the final 3D micro-CT scanning and reconstruction were conducted with the same parameters as the initial scanning, and superposition of the final and initial scanning was performed. Morphometric analysis was conducted using CTAn software (Bruker microCT, Kontich, Belgium) to assess the volume of remnant restorative material (mm³), the volume of dentin removal (mm³), and the direction and site of dentin removal. Data were analyzed using 1-Way analysis of variance (P < .05). RESULTS The REVEAL group showed better results regarding the volume of remnant material (3.17 ± 1.65) and the percentage of dentin removal (2.56 ± 1.34). The microscope group showed no statistical difference compared with the REVEAL group regarding dentin removal (3.30 ± 1.48) and was statistically similar to the naked eye group in the volume of remnant material (9.63 ± 4.33). The naked eye group showed the worst results for the volume of remnant material (7.60 ± 2.68) and the percentage of dentin removal (6.60 ± 3.70). CONCLUSIONS The use of fluorescence associated with magnification was the method that presented the best results, with lower percentages of dentin removal and smaller volumes of remaining restorative material. This is an innovative technology in endodontics that shows potential to overcome the challenge of reaccessing root canals in the context of endodontic retreatment.

Abstract
This in vitro study aimed to analyze the surface roughness (Ra) and color stability (ΔEab, ΔE00) following simulated mechanical brushing and to evaluate the microtensile (μTBS) of self-adhering resin flowable (SARF) to dentin. The selected materials were Constic, Yflow AS, and Tetric N flow (TNF/control). Thirty composite resin cylinders were fabricated for surface property evaluation. Ra and color were assessed both before and after simulated brushing. The thresholds of 50:50% perceptibility and acceptability of color differences in the evaluated resins were assessed. For μTBS analysis, fifteen molars were selected, sectioned to expose flat dentin surfaces, and restored according to the manufacturers' instructions for microtensile testing. There were statistically significant differences in Ra among the groups, with Constic exhibiting the highest Ra value (0.702 µm; p < 0.05), whereas Yflow AS presented the lowest Ra value (0.184 µm). No statistically significant difference in color was observed among the groups (p > 0.05). The 50:50% perceptibility and acceptability thresholds were set at 1.2 and 2.7 for ΔEab and 0.8 and 1.8 for ΔE 00. All the results fell within the acceptable limits. The mean μTBS values of Constic, Yflow AS, and TNF were 10.649 MPa, 8.170 MPa, and 33.669 MPa, respectively. This study revealed increased Ra and comparable color stability among all the tested composite resins after abrasion. However, the SARF exhibited lower μTBS compared to conventional using an adhesive system.

Abstract
PURPOSE The primary objective of this study was to determine which single-shade composite surface yielded clinically acceptable shear bond strength (SBS) to metal orthodontics brackets. The secondary objectives were to identify the best composite surface treatment to enhance SBS and determine which surface treatment produced the least surface damage at debond. METHODS Forty dental composite samples were selected from four different manufacturers (n=160) and grouped by manufacturer, one standard multi-shade dental system (FilTek™ Supreme Ultra) and three single-shade dental composites systems (OmniChroma®, SimpliShade™ and Venus® Diamond One). Each group of forty samples was randomly divided into four sub-groups (n=10). Each sub-group was identified by the surface treatment used, hydrofluoric acid (HFA), micro-etching (MIC), or phosphoric acid (PA). Shear bond strength testing and adhesive remnant index (ARI) were performed. Statistical analyses included Kruskal-Wallis, Wilcoxon rank-sum, and two-factorial ANOVA. RESULTS OmniChroma® had statistically significant lower shear bond strength than the other composite materials tested. The control groups had statistically significant lower shear bond strength than Group 1/HFA (P<0.001) and Group 2/MIC (P<0.001). Group 1/HFA had the lowest distribution ARI score overall, while MIC had the highest ARI score distributions. CONCLUSIONS The results of this in-vitro study found that all tested composite materials achieved clinically acceptable shear bond strengths. The utilization of micro-etching produced higher SBS. Significant Adhesive Remnant Index scores (< 0.001) were only found for OmniChroma® without any surface preparation.

Abstract
Objective This work aimed to assess the bonding performance of universal adhesive and self-etch adhesives, and a comparative study was conducted using the same acid etching mode. Methods The selective acid-etching mode was used to simulate bonded restorations to teeth defects of isolated human molars including enamel and dentin. Microtensile bond strength and microleakage of all adhesives were tested and compared after 24 h and 5000 thermocycles, respectively. The morphology of the adhesive interfaces was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fluorescent staining. Results The bond strength and microleakage of Single Bond Universal (SBU) adhesive are comparable to those of self-etch adhesives, although Clearfil Tri-S Bond (S3) exhibited significantly lower bond strength compared to other two self-etch groups evaluated. No significant differences were found in the microleakage resistance of these four adhesives, suggesting their similar effectiveness in sealing the margins of the restorations, although SBU showed the highest resistance of microleakage. The SEM and fluorescent staining results of the resin-dentin interfaces further revealed the formation of abundant resin tags for all adhesives. Conclusions Self-etch adhesives evaluated in this study performed similarly to universal adhesives in selective acid-etch mode for bond strength and microleakage resistance. Both types of adhesives exhibited effective penetration capabilities into the dentinal tubules. Clinical significance During the adhesion processes involving both dentin and enamel, self-etch adhesives can serve as alternatives to universal adhesives in selective acid-etch mode.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The acquisition of skills and manual dexterity in aesthetic dentistry in undergraduate teaching requires preclinical practices with simulation that should approximate real clinical situations. OBJECTIVE We will present a digital procedure for the creation of three-dimensional (3D) resin models adapted to the practices of the Aesthetic Dentistry course. MATERIAL AND METHOD Stereolithography or Standard Tesellation Language (STL) files of a real patient were previously obtained with a 3-shape intraoral scanner. Using the Exocad computer programme for dental prosthesis design, various modifications were made, such as incisor rotation, surface alterations imitating dysplasias or erosions, the creation of diastemas, or even changes in tooth size. The virtual model was printed in resin for use by students. Once the practices were finished, the students and the teachers evaluated the use of the 3D printed models. RESULTS The result is the typodont model, in which seven laboratory sessions took place: 1-Restoration of conoid tooth morphology, 2-Cervical abrasion/ erosion restoration, 3-Direct Composite Veneer, 4-Aesthetic correction in a tooth with rotation, 5-Diastem closure, 6-Occlusal abrasions/ erosion, and 7-Maryland bridge. 90.48% of the students evaluated the designed 3D model as the best method for laboratory practice compared to other methods, obtaining a general assessment of 8.3 out of 10. CONCLUSION The method used has provided a reproducible standard analog model for direct aesthetic dental restoration practice, with a good assessment by students and teachers.

Abstract
PURPOSE The main aim of the present study was to carry out a scoping review on the differences in degree of conversion of monomers regarding several types resin cements, indirect restorative materials, and light-curing procedures used in dentistry. METHOD A bibliographic review was performed on PubMed using the following search items: "degree of conversion" OR "filler" AND "resin cement" OR "inorganic cement" AND "organic" OR "radiopacity" OR "refractive" OR "transmittance" OR "type" AND "resin composite." The search involved articles published in English language within the last thirteen years. A research question has been formulated following the PICO approach as follow: "How different is the degree of conversion of monomers comparing several types of resin-matrix cements?". RESULTS Within the 15 selected studies, 8 studies reported a high degree of conversion (DC) of the organic matrix ranging from 70 up to 90% while 7 studies showed lower DC values. Dual-cured resin-matrix cements revealed the highest mean values of DC, flexural strength, and hardness when compared with light- and self-polymerized ones. DC mean values of resin-matrix cements light-cured through a ceramic veneer with 0.4 mm thickness were higher (~ 83%) than those recorded for resin-matrix cements light-cured through a thicker ceramic layer of 1.5 mm (~ 77%). CONCLUSIONS The highest percentage of degree of conversion of monomers was reported for dual-cured resin-matrix cements and therefore both chemical and light-induced pathways promoted an enhanced polymerization of the material. Similar degree of conversion of the same resin-matrix cement were recorded when the prosthetic structure showed a low thickness. On thick prosthetic structures, translucent materials are required to allow the light transmission achieving the resin-matrix cement. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The chemical composition of resin-matrix cements and the light-curing mode can affect the polymerization of the organic matrix. Thus, physical properties of the materials can vary leading to early clinical failures at restorative interfaces. Thus, the analysis of the polymerization pathways of resin-matrix cements is significantly beneficial for the clinical performance of the restorative interfaces.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to investigate the dentin shear bond strength (SBS) and bonding interface of three recently developed "universal" resin luting cements based on different modalities. METHODS The dentin SBS and interfacial analysis of three recently launched "universal" resin luting cements, namely, G-Cem One, RelyX Universal and Panavia SA cement universal, were studied. All bonding protocols, including the previous use of their dedicated primer or universal adhesive in touch-cure mode or light-cure mode were performed. Variolink Esthetic LC used in conjunction with Scotchbond Universal Plus was used as a control group. For each group (n = 9), 10 specimens were tested for dentin SBS and two were examined by scanning electron microscopy. SBS were analyzed by two-way ANOVA followed by Dunnett's test. RESULTS SBS values showed that the three "universal" resin luting cements tested exhibit different adhesive behaviors. G-Cem One with its touch-cure activated primer had a greater SBS to dentin (25.5 MPa) than that of the control group (22.1 MPa). CONCLUSION "Universal" resin luting cements have variable efficacy when used in self-curing mode. The touch-curing mode is also of concern but may show high potential for some formulations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the shade-matching ability of single-shade resin-based composite restorations in different thicknesses using both instrumental and visual techniques. METHODS AND MATERIALS Cavities with 4 mm diameter and 2 mm (n=96) or 3 mm (n=96) depth were prepared in acrylic incisor teeth of shades A2, A3, B3, and C2 and restored with three single-shade resin composites, Omnichroma (Tokuyama Dental America, Encinitas, CA, USA [OM]), Vittra APS Unique (FGM Dental Group, Joinville, SC, Brazil [VU]), Zenchroma (President Dental, Allershausen, Germany [ZC]), and a microhybrid resin composite (Filtek 3M Z250 3M ESPE, St Paul, MN, USA [FZ]) of A2, A3, B3, and C2 shades. Readings were obtained using VITA Easyshade V spectrophotometer for the teeth and restorations. The CIEDE2000 (ΔE00) color difference formula was used, and the values were assessed using three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Forty-eight evaluators graded the shade match of 32 different specimens visually as (A) best shade match, (B) intermediate shade match, and (C) poor shade match. RESULTS FZ material achieved satisfactory matches for both thicknesses, across all shades, and OM material demonstrated statistically significant lower shade matches than the ZC and the FZ materials (p<0.05). VU exhibited poor shade match with the highest ΔE00 value on C2 shade. According to the visual examination, the best shade matches were observed for FZ on A3-shade and ZC on C2-shade teeth. CONCLUSIONS Shade matching for 2 mm and 3 mm-thick composite resin restorations is material- and tooth-shade dependent.

Abstract
Background/purpose The dental adhesive market is constantly evolving to meet the demands of dentists and patients, but new products and upgrades should be rigorously evaluated before being used in clinical practice. This study investigated the physicomechanical properties and dentin bonding efficacy of a newly upgraded universal adhesive compared to its predecessor. Materials and methods Twenty-four molars were divided into four groups (n = 6/group) based on adhesive (new vs. predecessor) and application mode [self-etch (SE) vs. etch-and-rinse (ER)] for evaluating their dentin microtensile bond strength (μTBS), failure pattern, and bonding interface. Additional thirty-six molars' crowns were perpendicularly sectioned to obtain flat mid-coronal dentin discs. The opposing dentin surfaces of each disc received contrasting treatments (new/predecessor adhesive applied in SE/ER mode), resulting in six interventions. The bonded discs (n = 6/intervention) were used to assess the adhesives' survival probability employing a double-sided μTBS test. The other physicomechanical properties examined were adhesives' oxygen inhibition layer (OIL), viscosity, hardness, elastic modulus, degree of conversion (DC), and in-situ DC. Results Both adhesive versions showed similar μTBS (P > 0.05), failure pattern (P > 0.05), and survival probability (P > 0.008). ER mode promoted resin tag formation and exhibited a slender adhesive layer for both adhesives. The newer adhesive version showed a thinner adhesive layer in general with narrower OIL (P < 0.001), less viscosity (P < 0.001), higher hardness (P < 0.05), elastic modulus (P < 0.05), DC (P < 0.001), and in-situ DC (P < 0.001). Conclusion While the newly updated adhesive had superior physicomechanical properties with more fluidity, its dentin bonding efficacy and survival probability were comparable to its predecessor.

Abstract
Background and objective: The aim of this randomized split-mouth study-controlled clinical trial was to compare the 2-year clinical performance of resin composite restorations placed at non-caries cervical lesions (NCCL) with one-step self-etch, total-etch, and selective enamel etch and self-etch adhesive techniques. Materials and methods: Thirty-two patients received three resin composite restorations each at NCCLs (Tetric EvoCeram/Ivoclar/Vivadent), bonded with a total-etch adhesive agent (ExciTE F/Ivoclar/Vivadent) and a self-etch (AdheSE One F/Ivoclar/Vivadent) without and with selective enamel etching. All restorations were evaluated by two examiners at baseline, 6-, 12-, 18-, and 24-months with FDI clinical criteria (post-operation regarding retention, caries occurrence, marginal adaptation, and marginal staining). A logistic regression analysis, a Cohen's kappa statistic, a multifactorial analysis, and X2 were performed with generalized estimating equations. Results: After 2 years, the retention rate was 86.8% for total etch, 92.26% for self-etch, and 93.63% for selective enamel etching and self-etch. No caries was detected on the restorations. Concerning marginal adaptation, the clinically perfect restorations were 26.9% for the total-etch technique, 16% for self-etch, and 25.9% for selective enamel etch and self-etch. The logistic regression model revealed that only time reduced the probability of perfect marginal adaptation. Conclusions: All three adhesive strategies provided restorations with no significant differences in the retention rate or marginal adaptation, whereas the total etch yielded better performance for marginal staining. All restorations were assessed as clinically acceptable after 2 years.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of combining primers and cements from two different resin cement systems on the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) between zirconia and human dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 120 specimens of zirconia cemented to dentin were allocated into eight groups based on cement type (RelyX Ultimate or Panavia V5) and primers (Tooth Primer, Clearfil Ceramic Primer and Scotchbond Universal Adhesive) combinations, applied to dentin or ceramic surfaces. Following artificial aging with 5000 thermocycles, μTBS tests were conducted. Statistical analysis was performed using One-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc tests (p ≤ 0.05), and failure modes were assessed. RESULTS The Panavia V5 cement system demonstrated the highest bond strength (19.4 ± 4.4 MPa), significantly higher than the other groups except when RelyX cement was used with Panavia primers (16.9 ± 3.7 MPa). Cohesive fractures within the cement layer were the predominant failure mode. CONCLUSIONS The combination of primers from different adhesive cement system brands may significantly affect the bonding effectiveness. Therefore, using products from a single product line of the same adhesive cement system, and following the manufacturer's recommendations for indications and use, is crucial for a more predictable clinical outcome.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the bonding performance of self-adhesive flowable resin composites (SARs) to bovine teeth. Three SARs, one experimental, and two commercially available products, were used. The study parameters were shear bond strength (SBS), microleakage, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) evaluation of bonding interfaces. The SBS of the materials was 14.1-15.1 MPa to enamel, 22.2-23.2 MPa to etched enamel, and 7.4-10.7 MPa to dentin. Specimens with pre-etching showed lower microleakage scores than those without pre-etching. SEM images of the interfaces of the materials showed excellent adaptation regardless of the substrate or etching mode. The study results indicate that enamel pre-etching can improve the bonding performance of SARs.

Abstract
This study investigates the impact of mechanical alteration on resin composite surfaces and its subsequent effect on repair bond strength. A total of 100 resin composite disks were prepared and were allocated for 24 h or 1 year of artificial aging. Specimens were embedded in epoxy resin, and the composite surfaces were mechanically altered using either diamond burs or air abrasion with aluminum oxide or glass beads. A universal bonding material was applied and a 2 mm circular and 3 mm high repair composite cylinder were prepared using a Teflon mold. Then, the specimens were tested for their shear bond strength, and the de-bonded specimens were observed under a scanning electron microscope to determine the failure pattern. SPSS 26.0 statistical software was used to analyze the data. Two-way ANOVA showed a statistically significant effect of mechanical alteration and aging on the shear bond strength of S-PRG-filler-based resin composite (p < 0.05). Surface modification with a fine diamond bur showed a significantly higher bond strength in both 24-h- and 1-year-aged specimens. Surface modification with alumina significantly increased the bond strength of 1-year-aged specimens; however, it was statistically insignificant for 24 h-aged specimens. Mechanical alteration with a fine diamond bur and 50-micron alumina can improve the repair bond strength of the composite.

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of 3 s light-curing with a high-power LED curing unit on the shear bond strength of bulk-fill composites. Four bulk-fill composites were bonded to dentin with a universal adhesive (Scotchbond Universal Plus): two materials designed for rapid curing (Tetric PowerFill and Tetric PowerFlow) and two controls (Filtek One Bulk Fill Restorative and SDR Plus Bulk Fill Flowable). The 4 mm composite layer was light-cured with Bluephase PowerCure for 20 s at 1000 mW/cm2 ("20 s") or for 3 s at 3000 mW/cm2 ("3 s"). The samples were stored at 37 °C in distilled water and tested after 1, 6 and 12 months. The samples polymerised in the "3 s" mode had statistically similar or higher bond strength than the samples cured in "20 s" mode, except for the Tetric PowerFlow (1 month) and SDR+ (6 month). The flowable materials Tetric PowerFlow and SDR Plus initially showed the highest values in the "3 s" and "20 s" groups, which decreased after 12 months. The bond strength was statistically similar for all materials and curing protocols after 12 months, except for Tetric PowerFill cured with the "3 s" protocol (21.22 ± 5.0 MPa), which showed the highest value. Tetric PowerFill showed the highest long-term bond strength. While "3 s" curing resulted in equal or better shear bond strength, its use can only be recommended for a material with an AFCT agent such as Tetric PowerFill.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effect of simulated pulpal pressure (SPP) conditions and storage time on contemporary adhesive systems' microtensile bond strength (µTBS) to dentin. Extracted human molars were prepared and randomly divided into four groups according to the adhesives: Clearfil Megabond 2 (CSE), Beautibond Xtreme Universal (BXU), G2-Bond (G2B), and Scotchbond Universal Plus (SBP). Each adhesive group was further divided following the SPP conditions: control with no simulation (SPP-CTR), SPP with distilled water (SPP-DTW), and SPP with fetal bovine serum (SPP-FBS). Resin composite build-ups were prepared, and teeth were stored in water (37 °C) for 24 h (24 h) and 3 months (3 m). Then, teeth were sectioned to obtain resin-dentin bonded beams and tested to determine the µTBS. Data were analyzed using three-way ANOVA, Tukey post hoc tests (=0.05), and Weibull failure analysis. Failure mode was observed using scanning electron microscopy. The µTBS response was affected by adhesive systems, simulated pulpal pressure conditions, and storage time. SPP-CTR groups presented a higher overall bond strength than SPP-DTW and SPP-FBS, which were not significantly different from each other. Only for SBP, the SPP-FBS group showed higher µTBS than the SPP-DTW group. The Weibull analysis showed that the bonding reliability and durability under SPP-DTW and SPP-FBS were inferior to SPP-CTR, and the 24 h bonding quality of adhesives to dentin was superior to that of 3 m. SPP drastically reduced the µTBS of all adhesives to dentin regardless of solution (distilled water or fetal bovine serum). Storage after 3 m also decreased µTBS despite the SPP condition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the clinical performance of posterior restorations over wet and dry dentin with an etch-and-rinse adhesive after 36 months of clinical service. METHODS Forty-five participants were recruited, each one had at least two posterior teeth that needed restoration. Ninety restorations were placed on Class I or Class II cavities. For the restoration protocol, a simplified etch-and-rinse adhesive (Adper Single Bond 2) was applied over wet (WD) or dry dentin (DD) and later restored with a bulk-fill composite (Filtek Bulk Fill) under rubber dam isolation. Each restoration was evaluated using the World Dental Federation (FDI) criteria after 6, 12, and 36 months of clinical service, regarding the following principal restoration characteristics: postoperative sensitivity, marginal discoloration, marginal adaptation, fracture of material and retention, and recurrence of caries. Kruskal Wallis analysis of variance rank (α = 0.05) and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS After 36 months of clinical evaluation, no significant difference between groups was observed in each FDI criterion (p > 0.05). Twenty restorations (WD=10, DD=10) showed minor marginal staining, and twenty-two restorations (WD=11, DD=11) presented small marginal adaptation defects (p > 0.05). Four restorations were lost (WD = 2, DD = 2) and the fracture rates (95% confidence interval) were 94.9% for each one, without significant difference between wet and dry dentin (p > 0.05). SIGNIFICANCE The degree of dentin moisture does not seem to affect the clinical performance of a simplified etch-and-rinse adhesive in posterior restorations when the adhesive is applied vigorously over the dentine surface.

Abstract
Objective To identify the potential factors that induce procedural errors during posterior proximal resin composite restorations placed by dental students. Materials and Methods This retrospective study evaluated 803 bitewing radiographs of posterior proximal resin composite restorations placed by dental students at Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University. Atypical radiographic signs of failure were screened, and different patient-, operator-, and clinical-related factors were recorded. Chi-square test was used to examine the relationship between procedural errors and recorded factors. Stepwise adjusted logistic regression model was performed to identify predictors of procedural errors. Results The most observed errors were internal gaps at the bonding interface and internal voids. Molars had 0.39 the risk of internal voids (odds ratio [OR] = 0.39; confidence interval [CI] = 0.25-0.60; P = <0.0001), 0.41 the risk of sharp angle (OR = 0.41; CI = 0.24-0.68; P = <0.001), and 0.57 the risk of open contact (OR = 0.57; CI = 0.34-0.97; P = 0.04) compared to premolars. Those who were >40 years of age had 1.79 the risk of overhang compared to younger patients (OR = 1.79; CI = 1.04-3.11; P = <0.04). First molars and premolars had 0.64 the risk of overhang compared to second molars and premolars (OR = 0.64; CI = 0.41-1.00; P = 0.04). Junior students had 1.97 the risk of internal gap compared to their senior counterparts (OR = 1.97; CI = 1.20-3.21; P = 0.008). Mesial restorations had 0.38 the risk of external gap compared to mesio-occluso-distal (MOD) restorations (OR = 0.38; CI = 0.19-0.78; P = 0.003). Restorations with a margin coronal to the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) had 0.44 the risk of external gap compared to those restorations with a margin apical to the CEJ (OR = 0.44; CI = 0.29-0.66; P = <0.0001). Conclusion Our findings suggested a higher incidence of procedural errors in restoring premolars and MOD cavity preparations. Therefore, it is crucial to enhance the comprehensiveness of laboratory training and expose students to diverse clinical scenarios and various techniques.

Abstract
Photopolymerization kinetics affects the curing time, degree of conversion, polymerization shrinkage, and mechanical properties of composites. The aim of this study was to compare three methods (temperature, heat flow, and polymerization shrinkage) for photopolymerization kinetics measurement of composites. The photopolymerization kinetics of four composites (2 packable and 2 flowable) were measured with an LED light for 20 s (radiant emittance: 2,100 mW/cm2). For the two packable composites, photopolymerization kinetics was measured with varying the radiant emittance and exposure time. For each measurement method, peak times were determined as the time when maximum temperature rise, heat flow, and shrinkage rate occurred, respectively. The photopolymerization kinetics differed among the measurement methods. The photopolymerization kinetics of composites changed as the radiant emittance and composite type varied. In clinical practice and research on the composite restoration, the kinetics should be considered comprehensively with the complementary use of various measurement methods.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the optical and mechanical performance of two single-shade resin-based composites (RBCs) compared to those of a conventional RBC for restoring posterior teeth. METHODS Two single-shade RBCs, Omnichroma (Tukoyama) and Vittra Unique APS (FGM), and a conventional RBC, Filtek Z350XT shade A2 (3M Oral Care), were evaluated in this study. The optical shade-matching performance was measured using a spectrophotometer. The light emitted by VALO Grand (Ultradent) and transmitted through the 2.0-mm RBC specimens was evaluated using beam profiling. Knoop hardness (KH, N/mm2), degree of conversion (DC, %) at the top and bottom, flexural strength (FS, MPa), elastic modulus (E, GPa), postgel shrinkage (Shr, %), and shrinkage stress (MPa) were evaluated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to characterize the filler. Data for FS, E, and Shr were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and KH and DC by repeated one-way ANOVA measurement followed by Tukey test (α=0.05). The modified von Mises stress values, light transmission, and SEM images were analyzed qualitatively. RESULTS All single-shade RBCs exhibited higher chromatic adaptation than the Filtek Z350XT (p<0.001). Omnichroma exhibited less color difference than Vittra Unique APS, irrespective of the shade. The light transmitted through Omnichroma and Vittra Unique APS increased during polymerization. KH and DC values were significantly reduced from the top to the bottom of the specimens for all RBCs (p<0.001); however, the ratio values were always higher than 80%. In general, all RBCs demonstrated similar mechanical properties. All RBCs exhibited a similar FS (p=0.083) and Shr value (p=0.144). Filtek Z350XT exhibited significantly higher E (p<0.001) than both single-shade RBCs. All RBCs exhibited similar shrinkage stress during restoration and similar residual stress during occlusal loading. CONCLUSIONS Single-shade Omnichroma and Vittra Unique APS increased light transmission during light-activation, demonstrating better chromatic adaptation than conventional Filtek Z350XT. In general, Omnichroma and Vittra Unique APS exhibited similar mechanical properties and shrinkage stress distributions as Filtek Z350XT during light-activation and occlusal loading.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical performance of surface sealants associated with a bulk-fill composite in posterior restorations after 4 years. METHODS A total of 174 posterior restorations were performed on 57 participants using a self-etch adhesive system and a bulk-fill composite. The groups were then divided into the following categories: 1) without surface sealant (NoS), 2) with surface sealant Biscover (Bisco, SBi), and 3) with surface sealant Permaseal (Ultradent, SPe). Restorations were evaluated using FDI criteria at baseline and after 1 and 4 years. Statistical analysis was conducted using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and the Chi-square test (α = 0.05). RESULTS After 4 years, only one restoration was lost (1 in the NoS group). The fracture/retention rate (with 95% confidence interval) was 98% for NoS and 100% for both SBi and SPe (p = 0.76). The majority of secondary outcomes showed minor defects, with no significant differences among the groups (p > 0.05). However, significant differences were observed among the groups in terms of marginal staining and marginal adaptation (p = 0.03). In both items, twelve restorations (nine in NoS, one in SBi, and two in SPe) showed minor marginal discrepancies favoring the sealant groups (SBi and SPe). SIGNIFICANCE Regardless of the use of surface sealants, the bulk-fill composite restorations showed excellent clinical performance after 4 years. However, the groups that received sealants showed better marginal adaptation and less marginal discoloration compared to those that did not receive sealants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the influence of adhesive resin application modalities on the film thickness of the adhesive resin and the effectiveness of a two-step universal adhesive (UA) bonded in self-etch (SE) bonding mode to high C-factor class-I cavity-bottom dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS After application of the primer of G2-Bond Universal (G2B, GC), the adhesive resin was applied into standard class-I cavities (human molars) following four application modalities: (1) one layer, strongly air-blown; (2) one layer, gently air-blown; (3) two layers, each gently air-blown; (4) one layer, not air-blown. After being restored with composite, each tooth was sectioned to obtain one micro-specimen (n = 10), of which the adhesive resin film thickness was measured using optical microscopy. The micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) was tested immediately or upon 100,000 thermocycles. Statistical analyses involved Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U testing (p < 0.05). RESULTS G2B's μTBS was significantly affected by the adhesive resin application modality and aging. Gently air-blowing the adhesive resin resulted in significantly higher immediate μTBS than strong air-blowing or no air-blowing. No significant difference in μTBS was found between single or double gently air-blown adhesive resin applications. The adhesive resin film thickness significantly varied with the application modalities. CONCLUSIONS A too thin or too thick adhesive resin film thickness adversely affected bond strength of the two-step UA applied in SE mode and high C-factor condition. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The adhesive resin layer thickness can affect the bonding performance of two-step UAs in high C-factor cavities. Dental clinicians remain advised to avoid improper air-blowing of UAs and strictly follow the application instructions.

This literature review provides a comprehensive examination of the currently available resin luting agents and their bonding requirements. It provides valuable insights for dental professionals seeking an in-depth understanding of the current state of the field and the future prospects of dental adhesion.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate internal tooth-filling interfaces of composite fillings made using universal adhesives using micro-computed tomography (µCT). Sixty class V cavities were randomly assigned into six groups: Peak Universal etch and rinse (PER), Peak Universal self-etch (PSE), Adhese Universal etch and rinse (AER), and Adhese Universal self-etch (ASE). Two further adhesives considered gold standards were used as control groups: OptiBond FL (OER) for the etch and rinse technique and Clearfil SE for the self-etch technique (CSE). All teeth were subjected to thermomechanical loading and four-year water storage. Next, they were analyzed using µCT to investigate the internal tooth-filling interfaces. The proportions between the gap volume (GV) at the tooth-filling interface and the volume of applied composite filling (FV), between the gap and cavity volumes (CV), and between the gap volumes at the tooth-filling interface of the external (EGV) and internal (IGV) parts were calculated. Adhese Universal achieved the significantly lowest gap-to-filling- and gap-to-cavity-volume ratios for both types of etching techniques comparing to those of the Peak Universal and control groups. Significant differences between the gaps in external and internal parts of the tooth-filling interface were only noted in the control groups. Internal gap formation and development at the tooth-filling interface depend on the material as well as the type of its application.

Abstract
PURPOSE The objective of this double-blind, split-mouth, randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the color match of a single-shade composite resin Admira Fusion X-tra in comparison with a multi-shade composite resin Admira Fusion in non-carious cervical lesion restorations (NCCLs). METHODS AND MATERIALS One hundred and twenty restorations were performed on NCCLs with two restorative materials (n=60). After prophylaxis, the teeth were isolated with a rubber dam, and one universal adhesive was applied in the selective enamel etching strategy. For both groups, the restorations were inserted incrementally and light-cured. The values of the coordinates L*, a*, and b* in the cervical third before vs after the restorations and cervical vs middle third after the restorations were evaluated using a digital spectrophotometer after the coordinate values were used to calculate the CIEDE (ΔE00). The restorations were evaluated at baseline and after 7 days of clinical performance according to the FDI criteria. Statistical analysis was performed using the Chi-square test for all parameters. Color change was analyzed by Student t-test for paired samples (α=0.05). RESULTS All restorations were evaluated after 7 days. Regarding the color measurement, no significant difference was observed when Admira Fusion was compared to Admira Fusion X-tra for any of the comparisons performed (p>0.05). However, the values of ΔE00 in the cervical third before vs after the restorations were higher when compared with ΔE00 observed when the cervical vs middle third after restorations were compared. All restorations received the score "clinically very good" after 7 days for all outcomes, including the subjective color match, when evaluated for FDI criterion. CONCLUSIONS The single-shade composite resin used achieves the same color match when compared to a multi-shade composite resin after 7 days in NCCLs.

Abstract
AIM To compare the bond strength of two resin cements to leucite-reinforced ceramics using three different boding agents and evaluate the compatibility of bonding agents. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty extracted sound human molars were sectioned horizontally 2-3 mm above the cementoenamel junction (CEJ). CAD/CAM ceramic blocks for inLab were also sectioned to create 4 mm thick and bonded to the dentin. The adhesive groups assigned were divided into four adhesive groups: Group I: Variolink II dual-cure resin cement and Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Plus adhesive, group II: Multilink Automix dual-cure resin cement and Multilink primers, group III: Multilink Automix and Clearfil SE bond 2 (CSE2) adhesive, group IV: Multilink Automix and CSE2 with light curing after adhesive application. Five specimens of each group were sectioned perpendicular to obtain six microsticks of 1 × 1 mm width from each sample. Microtensile bond strength data were expressed in MPa. Fracture modes (FrMs) analyzed for the surfaces were divided into six patterns. Microtensile bond strength data were statistically analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc tests (α = 0.05). T-test was performed at the 5% significance level to analyze groups III and IV with and without light curing. RESULTS Group I showed the highest μTBS average of 13.67 MPa, group IV showed 12.26 MPa, group III showed 12.15 MPa, and group II showed the lowest average of 10.84 MPa. No significant differences were found between the bonding agents. However, the six types of failure modes, although all observed, were characterized by the adhesive system: Type I: adhesive failure of laminated dentin and ceramic; type II: adhesive failure of laminated ceramic; type III: adhesive failure of laminated dentin; type IV: cohesive failure of luting agent; type V: cohesive failure of dentin, and type VI: mixed failure of adhesion and cohesion. As a result, the FrM most commonly observed was the adhesive failure at the luting cement-ceramic block interface. CONCLUSION The combination of resin cements and bonding agents did not significantly affect the bond strength of CAD/CAM ceramic restorations and dentin. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Several universal bonding agents are currently available for direct and indirect bonding, and using the same bonding agent for direct and indirect restorations could simplify inventory and benefit routine clinical practice. DATA Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of SAFCs versus FCs with a follow-up length of at least one year. No restrictions were placed on language or publication date. SOURCES Five databases, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, were searched manually by browsing ten related journals. On 14 June 2023, all electronic and manual searches were updated. STUDY SELECTION Five RCTs with 138 participants were included. Cochrane's risk of bias tool (2.0) was implemented in selected studies, and the GRADE tool was utilised to evaluate the evidence quality. To summarize the effects of the treatments and pool the data, a random-effects model was used. CONCLUSIONS According to the modified United States Public Health Service Evaluation (USPHS) criteria, there was no discernible difference between the groups during the two-year follow-up period (maximum follow-up time). Nevertheless, FCs applied with the etch-and-rinse mode demonstrated superior marginal adaptation and marginal discoloration at the two-year follow-up (relative risk = 3.21 [1.50 to 6.83], 3.40 [1.10, 10.48]). The evidence for marginal discoloration at any recall time and marginal adaptation at the one-year follow-up was graded as moderate quality due to inconsistency. Moreover, low-quality evidence for marginal adaptation at two-year follow-up was due to imprecision and inconsistency. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE SAFCs exhibited clinical performance comparable to that of FCs in occlusal cavities. Further high-quality clinical trials are needed to provide solid evidence to support the clinical application of SAFCs. REGISTRATION PROSPERO (CRD42022374983).

Abstract
The effectiveness of a universal adhesive applied in three application modes for the preparation of Class V composite restorations was evaluated both clinically and by quantitative marginal analysis (QMA) over 36 months. In 50 patients, three (n = 21) or four (n = 29) non-carious cervical lesions (NCCL) were restored with Venus® Diamond Flow (Kulzer GmbH, Hanau, Germany). The adhesive iBond® Universal (iBU, Kulzer, Germany) was used in self-etch (SE), etch-and-rinse (ER), or selective-enamel-etch mode (SEE). The etch-and-rinse adhesive OptiBondTM FL served as a control (OFL, Kerr GmbH, Herzogenrath, Germany). The restorations were clinically assessed (FDI criteria) at 14 days (BL), 6, 12, 24, and 36 months. Additionally, QMA was conducted on all restorations of 11 randomly selected patients. FDI criteria and marginal gap and perfect margin were compared between and within groups and recalls using McNemar, Wilcoxon, or Mann-Whitney U-tests (α = 0.05). Starting with 12 months, cumulative failure rates were lower in iBU-SE (0.0%, p = 0.016) and iBU-ER groups (2.1%, p = 0.07) compared to OFL (16.7%). At two years, iBU-SEE also showed fewer failures (0.0% SEE vs. 34.6% OFL, p = 0.016), as did iBU-SE compared to iBU-ER after 36 months (2.2 and 19.6%, p = 0.039). From BL, the iBU-SEE group always had the fewest marginal gaps and the highest percentage of perfect margins. From BL, iBU-SEE (0%, p = 0.008) and iBU-ER (0.2%, p = 0.027) showed significantly fewer marginal gaps compared to OFL (2.5%) and more perfect margins were found with iBU-SEE starting at 6 months (p = 0.054). The SEE and ER modes ensured the most excellent marginal quality, with differences from the control appearing earlier with QMA than clinically. In restoring NCCls, iBU showed superior clinical performance over OFL, especially in modes SE and SEE.

Abstract
Adhesive agents are essential to most restorative procedures used in everyday practice. Depending on the clinical situation, the dentist will choose among a rapidly evolving variety of adhesive agents (bonding agents). Due to the availability of many adhesive agents, appropriate selection can take time and effort. Typically, a practitioner relies more on marketing and experience than in-depth material knowledge. The classification of adhesive agents may need to be clarified and easier to remember due to its lack of relevance to clinical procedures. This paper reviews the published literature retrieved from PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus by using specific keywords "adhesive agents", "classification", "dentin", "enamel", "universal", "self-etch", "etch-and-rinse", and "bonding". The titles and abstracts were screened, and the relevant literature was retrieved. The list of references from each identified article was examined to find other potentially relevant articles. Adhesive agents can be classified as etch-and-rinse, self-etch, or "multi-mode" according to their approach to interacting with the smear layer, and each approach can be further classified according to the number of clinical steps required during application. This article reviews the classification of current adhesive agents and discusses the properties that make a specific adhesive agent the optimal choice for a particular clinical indication. The review will assist the general dentist in understanding the various types of available adhesive agents and how they function. Overall, the review will facilitate decision-making and allow the selection of appropriate materials.

Abstract
This study evaluated dentin enzymatic degradation based on the total matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity of demineralized dentin matrices before and after exposure to phosphoric acid (PA), glycolic acid (GA), and ferulic acid (FA). The release of hydroxyproline (HP), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and dentin permeability (DP) were also evaluated. Dentin collagen matrices were assessed according to total MMP activity before and after treatment with the tested acids (n=10) for 15 seconds and compared with the control (GM6001 inhibitor). Dentin beams were analyzed for HP release and UTS after the treatments. Dentin discs were tested for DP at a pressure of 5 psi before and after treatment with the acids (n=10). The FA group had a lower percentage of enzymatic inhibition than the PA and GA groups (p<0.0001). No significant difference in UTS was found among the acids (p=0.6824), but HP release was significantly higher in the FA group than in the PA and GA groups (p<0.0001). No significant difference in DP was found for the acids (p=0.0535). GA led to less activation of MMPs and less release of HP, whereas the UTS and DP for GA were like those found for PA. In contrast, FA promoted greater enzymatic activity and greater release of HP, while having similar results to GA and PA regarding mechanical properties.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effectiveness of a black light lens as visual aid in composite restoration removal. Lost tooth structure, residual composite, and removal time were compared for operators with different levels of experience. METHODS Occlusal preparations in 24 matched-pair extracted molars were etched, bonded, restored with composite, and thermocycled. The restored teeth were radiographed and two faculty and two student doctors removed the restorations with or without a black light lens while time was recorded. Digital scans of the cavity before and after restoration removal were used to calculate lost tooth structure and residual composite. RESULTS Removal of restorations resulted in tooth structure loss and left residual composite. The use of the black light lens had no significant effect (two-way ANOVA; p value >0.05). However, operator experience significantly affected operating times and average depth of tooth structure loss (two-way ANOVA; p value <0.05). Student doctors assisted by the black light lost less tooth structure than experienced operators and improved their operating times (multiple comparisons; p value <0.05). CONCLUSIONS The black light lens did not conserve tooth structure or avoid composite remnants compared to routine operation, nor affected the operating time. However, less-experienced operators did benefit from the black light in conserving tooth structure and time. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Replacement of defective composite restorations is a regular practice in restorative dentistry. When existing composite restorations are removed, loss of tooth structure is unavoidable. A black light lens might improve the ability of operators with less experience to conserve tooth structure even though it did not provide benefits for the experienced operators.

Abstract
Joining metals by adhesive bonding is essential in widespread fields such as mobility, dentistry, and electronics. Although adhesive technology has grown since the 1920s, the roles of interfacial phenomena in adhesive bonding are still elusive, which hampers the on-demand selection of surface treatment and adhesive types. In the present study, we clarified how chemical interactions and mechanical interlocking governed adhesive bonding by evaluating adhesion properties at the interfaces between epoxy/amine adhesive and two kinds of Al adherends: a flat aluminum hydroxide (AlxOyHz) and technical Al plate with roughness. Spectroscopic and microscopical data demonstrate that the protonation of the amino groups in an amine hardener converts Al(OH)3 on the AlxOyHz surface to AlO(OH). The interfacial protonation results in an interfacial dipole layer with positive charges on the adhesive side, whose electrostatic interaction increases the interfacial fracture energy. The double cantilever beam tests for the flat AlxOyHz and technical Al substrates clarify that the mechanical interlocking originating from the surface roughness further increases the fracture energy. This study disentangles the roles of the chemical interactions and mechanical interlocking occurring at the epoxy adhesive/Al interface in the adhesion mechanism.

Abstract
Aim The present study investigated the effects of laser and conventional in-office bleaching, and polishing on the color of stained composite resin. Materials and Methods A microhybrid composite (Clearfil AP-X) and a nanohybrid composite (Grandio) were selected. Twenty-four discs (2 × 10 mm) for each composite were prepared. The samples were immersed in coffee solution (25 g of coffee in 250 mL water) for seven days. Then the samples were divided into three groups (n = 8) and the stains were removed using bleaching (with Opalescence Xtra Boost), diode laser irradiation with Heydent material and a Sof-Lex polishing kit. The L ∗a ∗b ∗ color parameters were determined using a spectrophotometer before and after immersion and after stain removal procedures, and the overall color changes (ΔE) were calculated. The data were analyzed with two-way analysis of variance. Results In the Clearfil composite resin group, the mean ΔE compared to the baseline using in-office bleaching, laser irradiation, and Sof-Lex polishing kit were 3.31, 3.35, and 4.93, respectively. These values with the Grandio composite resin were 3.31, 6.35, and 4.57, respectively. The highest capacity to remove stains was related to the conventional in-office bleaching method. Grandio composite resin underwent more color changes than Clearfil composite resin significantly (P-value < 0.05). Conclusion Both composite resins exhibited color changes after immersion in the discoloring solution. However, after staining-removing procedures, the ΔE values decreased. Decreases in the ΔE values were not sufficient to restore the color to that before immersion in the discoloring solution with any stain-removing methods.

Abstract
Introduction Universal single-shade composite resins are characterized by a property that enables the creation of restorations that mimic tooth structure to the extent possible with fewer shades of color. Objectives This study aimed to instrumentally and visually evaluate the color correspondence of two single-shade composite resins in extracted human teeth multishade composite resins. Methods Upper central incisors and upper and/or lower molars with intact buccal surfaces were selected. The study consisted of a control group (n = 20): Z250 XT (3M ESPE) (G1) multishade composite resin in colors A1 to A4, and a test group (n = 20) divided further into two equal groups, consisting of single-shade composite resin Omnichroma (Tokuyama Dental) (G2) and single-shade composite resin Vittra APS Unique from (FGM) (G3). Instrumental evaluation was performed using a spectrophotometer, and visual evaluation was performed by three observers. Descriptive measurements related to the differences in color obtained through instrumental means were analyzed using mean and standard deviation, wherein the means were compared using ANOVA, applying the Bonferroni post hoc test. Results A statistically significant difference was observed among the groups (G1, G2, and G3) (ANOVA: p < 0.001). For the visual assessment, regardless of the assessment group, 77.49% of the teeth were within the acceptable color-match classification, with the single-shade resins showing better correspondence than the multishade resins. Conclusion Single-shade composite resins showed different color-matching results when compared to multishade resins, both in spectrophotometry and visual evaluations. Clinical Significance. Single-shade composite resins simplify the shade-selection process and are promising materials for use in dental practice.

Abstract
Post-operative sensitivity (POS) is the most common clinical dental complaint after tooth preparation and resin-based composite restoration. In our previous study, copine 7 (CPNE7) and CPNE7-derived peptide (CPNE7-DP) induced in vitro odontoblast differentiation and in vivo dentin formation. Here, we incorporated CPNE7-DP into All-Bond Universal (ABU) adhesive, developing ABU/CPNE7-DP. This study aimed to investigate the possibility of reducing POS using ABU/CPNE7-DP. We first determined the stability of CPNE7-DP under low pH. Furthermore, we evaluated its dentinal tubule penetration, in vitro odontogenic differentiation potential, in vivo tertiary dentin formation and its effects on bonding performance. CPNE7-DP was stable at pH 1.2, even lower than ABU's pH of 3.2. ABU/CPNE7-DP can penetrate dentinal tubules, stimulate odontoblast differentiation in vitro and generate tertiary dentin with tubular structure in vivo without interfering with bonding performance. Therefore, ABU/CPNE7-DP may serve as a novel bioactive adhesive for reducing POS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Experimental two-step universal adhesives (2-UAs) providing a particle-filled hydrophobic adhesive resin with a significant film thickness to hydrophobically seal the adhesive interface were designed and synthesized. This study aimed to characterize their interfacial interaction with dentin, to determine whether the 2-UA formulations achieve durable bonding to low C-factor flat dentin and to measure their water sorption. METHODS Bonding effectiveness of 2-UAs that combine a 10-MDP-based primer with hydrophobic adhesive resins differing only for filler (BZF-21, BZF-29, and BZF-29_hv) were comparatively investigated with the commercial adhesive Clearfil SE Bond 2 (C-SE2, Kuraray Noritake). Adhesive-dentin interfaces were characterized with TEM. Adhesive-resin disks were immersed in distilled water at 37 °C for 1 week, 6 months and 1 year to measure water sorption and solubility. 'Immediate' and 'aged' micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) of the adhesives applied in etch-and-rinse (E&R) and self-etch (SE) bonding mode to low C-factor flat dentin were measured. Statistical analyses involved linear mixed-effects (LME) modelling and Kruskal-Wallis testing (p < 0.05). RESULTS TEM revealed that E&R hybrid layers were more sensitive to aging than SE hybrid layers. Lower water sorption was recorded for all UAs compared with C-SE2. The immediate μTBS of BZF-21 and BZF-29 was not significantly different from that of C-SE2. The 1-year aged μTBS of all 2-UAs was significantly lower than that of C-SE2, except for BZF-29 applied in E&R mode. A significant reduction in μTBS upon 1-year aging was recorded for BZF-21 and BZF-29 applied in E&R mode. A significant difference in μTBS between E&R and SE bonding modes was recorded for all adhesives except BZF-21. SIGNIFICANCE Experimental 2-UAs with a hydrophobic adhesive-resin design produced± 20-μm thick adhesive-resin layers, absorbed less water and resulted in bonding performance that was more aging-resistant when applied in SE than in E&R bonding mode. The silica-filled BZF-29 2-UA revealed the most comparable bonding performance with C-SE2 in a low C-factor condition (flat dentin).

Abstract
The objective of this study was to compare the physical and optical stability of resin composite materials with different filler characteristics. Ninety-six resin composite blocks (6 mm × 6 mm × 2 mm) were prepared using four different types of resin composite, divided into four groups. Specimens from the same material were randomly divided into four groups (n = 6) and allocated for Vickers hardness (VH), water sorption, solubility (WS/SL), and staining and aging challenges tests. One-way ANOVA showed significant differences in microhardness (p = 0.0001), WS (p = 0.0001), and SL (p = 0.003) among the tested groups. Beautifil II LS recorded the highest hardness, and CharmFil®Flow had the lowest value. Beautifil Injectable X and II LS showed negative WS, whereas the other groups had positive values. All groups showed positive SL. Repeated measures ANOVA showed significant color parameter alteration in the tested groups (p = 0.0001). All groups showed significant color shifting after one week of the staining challenge. Repeated measures ANOVA showed a significant color parameter (p = 0.0001) and weight (p = 0.001) alteration after the aging challenge. The optical and physical stability of resin composites may vary according to filler characteristics. Clinicians should choose the composite as per the desired outcome.

Abstract
The composition of universal adhesives, as well as the adhesive strategy, may influence bonding effectiveness and durability. This study aimed to evaluate the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) and nanoleakage (NL), immediately and after 6-month aging, and in situ degree of conversion (DC), of two universal adhesives (Scotchbond Universal Adhesive, SBU; Xeno Select, XEN) applied with etch-and-rinse (ER) and self-etch (SE) strategies, in comparison with a two-step SE adhesive (Clearfil SE Bond, CSE). Dentin surfaces of fifty human third molars were randomly assigned to the following adhesives: two universal adhesives, SBU and XEN, applied in ER or SE mode and CSE, used as control. Teeth were sectioned into beams to be tested under µTBS, half of them after 24 h, and the rest after 6 months of water aging. Selected beams from each tooth were used for NL evaluation and in situ DC quantification. SBU and CSE showed significantly higher mean µTBS and lower nanoleakage than XEN, regardless of the evaluation time and adhesion strategy. XEN-SE yielded the lowest degree of conversion. Therefore, adhesive properties of universal adhesives to dentin are material dependent, regardless of the adhesion strategy, exhibiting XEN a significantly worse performance than SBU.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental materials science is an important core course in undergraduate dental programs which integrates foundational concepts of chemical engineering and materials science into clinical dentistry. The present study aimed to identify relevant dental materials science topics for Malaysian undergraduate dental curricula and to determine their appropriate competency levels in terms of cognitive and psychomotor taxonomies. METHODS Potential dental materials science topics were drafted in alignment with the revised national competency statement. The list of topics was further amended after comparing it with those recommended topics in the literature. Fuzzy Delphi method was applied. Experts were selected based on the different inclusion criteria. They ranked the topics using a five-point Likert scale and recommended the appropriate cognitive and psychomotor levels. Next, fuzzy evaluation was performed. Consensus was deemed for a topic to be included if (a) the average expert agreement was ≥ 75%, (b) the d-construct threshold value for each topic was ≤ 0.2 and (c) the average fuzzy number was ≥ 0.5. RESULTS Sixty-two experts participated in the study. They accepted 33 out of 36 potential dental materials science topics. The average Likert score and fuzzy number ranged from 3.63 to 4.92 and 0.526 to 0.784, respectively. Furthermore, "Endodontic materials" was ranked as the most significant topic. Meanwhile, many topics required dental students to demonstrate a cognitive level of "Apply" and a psychomotor level of "Guided response". Based on mean scores, "Impression materials" was rated as the most cognitively demanding topic, whilst "Temporary restorative materials" was the most demanding topic for psychomotor taxonomy. CONCLUSION The present study has identified relevant dental materials science topics and their appropriate cognitive and psychomotor levels using the Fuzzy Delphi approach. The findings of the present study form the basis for future studies to develop measurable learning outcomes, design corresponding innovative pedagogy and propose assessment criteria for each topic.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This meta-analysis aimed to elucidate the effects of various acid etching patterns on the sensitivity of teeth and their clinical effectiveness following composite resin repair. MATERIALS AND METHODS PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Embase databases were searched for relevant studies on the postoperative sensitivity (POS) of composite resin restorations after using different bonding systems. The retrieval was from the inception of the databases to August 13, 2022, with no filter of written language. Literature screening was conducted by two independent researchers. The Cochrane risk-of-bias assessment tool was adopted for quality evaluation, and Stata 15.0 for analysis. RESULTS Twenty-five randomized controlled trials were included in the present study. Following resin composite restoration, 1309 restorations were bonded by self-etching (SE) adhesives, whereas 1271 restorations were bonded by total-etching (TE) adhesives. The meta-analyses showed that there is no evidence to prove the SE and TE will affect POS at present when measured using the modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria [RR = 1.00 (95% CI: 0.96, 1.04)], the World Dental Federation (FDI) [RR = 1.06 (95% CI: 0.98, 1.15)], or the visual analog scale (VAS) [SMD = 0.02 (95% CI: -0.15, 0.20)] scales. At a certain follow-up time, TE adhesives provide better outcomes in terms of color match, marginal staining, and marginal adaptation. In other words, TE adhesives have better esthetic results. CONCLUSIONS The type of bonding technique (ER and SE) does not affect the risk and degree of POS in class I/II and class V restorations. Further research is required to verify whether these findings apply to different forms of composite resin restorations. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Besides the fact that TE barely increase postoperative sensitivity, it also yields superior cosmetic results.

Abstract
Adhesive materials are natural or synthetic polymers with the ability to adhere to the surface of luminal mucus or epithelial cells. They are widely used in the biomedical field due to their unique adhesion, biocompatibility, and excellent surface properties. When used in the human body, they can adhere to an accessible target and remain at the focal site for a longer period, improving the therapeutic effect on local disease. An adhesive material with bacteriostatic properties can play an antibacterial role at the focal site and the adhesive properties of the material can prevent the focal site from being infected by bacteria for a period. In addition, some adhesive materials can promote cell growth and tissue repair. In this review, the properties and mechanism of natural adhesive materials, organic adhesive materials, composite adhesive materials, and underwater adhesive materials have been introduced systematically. The applications of these adhesive materials in drug delivery, antibacterials, tissue repair, and other applications are described in detail. Finally, we have discussed the prospects and challenges of using adhesive materials in the field of biomedicine.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study compared the bonding properties of dentin of three 2-step etch-and-rinse adhesives (2-ERAs) to those of three universal adhesives (UAs) applied with an etch-and-rinse strategy (ER), immediately and after 1 year of water storage. METHODS Sixty caries-free molars were divided into 6 groups according to the adhesive systems used (n = 10). The 2-ERA systems included were: 1) Adper Single Bond 2 (SB), 2) Tetric N-Bond (TB), and 3) Ambar (AM); and the UAs systems were: 4) Single Bond Universal (SBU) 5) Tetric N-Bond Universal (TBU), and 6) Ambar Universal (AMU). The occlusal third of each tooth was removed and the adhesives were applied. After the composite build-up, specimens were sectioned and tested for microtensile bond strength (µTBS) and nanoleakage (NL) immediately and after 1 year of water storage. In situ degree of conversion (DC) was only evaluated in the immediate time. For water sorption (WS), solubility (SO), and mass change (MC) tests, 48 disk-shaped specimens were prepared (n = 8) and assessed according to ISO 4049:2009. RESULTS UAs showed higher µTBS and lower NL values than 2-ERAs did after 1 year of water storage (p = 0.001). Regarding DC, 2-ERAs showed higher DC values than UAs (p = 0.001). Regarding WS, 2-ERAs showed higher WS values than those of UAs (p = 0.00001), except for AM and AMU. Lower WS was observed for AM than for other 2-ERAs (p = 0.00001). CONCLUSION The use of UAs applied with the ER strategy seems to be a more effective technique for maintaining adhesion to dentin substrate than 2-ERAS. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE This study may support clinicians in selecting the most adequate adhesive system to be used in ER strategy in dentin, demonstrating that UAs were more effective, considering the longevity of the resin restorations.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Intraoral scanners (IOSs) are widely used for partial-coverage adhesive restorations, but data on their performance in such preparations with complex geometries are sparse. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate whether the partial-coverage adhesive preparation design and finish line depth affect the trueness and precision of different IOSs. MATERIAL AND METHODS Seven partial-coverage adhesive preparation designs (4 different onlays, 2 endocrowns, and 1 occlusal veneer) were tested on copies of the same tooth placed in a typodont mounted on a mannequin. Each preparation was scanned 10 times with 6 different IOSs (total 420 scans) under the same light conditions. Trueness and precision, defined according to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 5725-1 standard, were analyzed with a best-fit algorithm by superimposition. The obtained data were analyzed by a 2-way analysis of variance to examine the effects of partial-coverage adhesive preparation design, IOS, and their interactions (α=.05). RESULTS Significant differences were found among different preparation designs and IOSs (P<.05) in terms of both trueness and precision. Significant differences were also found among mean positive and negative values (P<.05). Moreover, crosslinks observed between the preparation area and the adjacent teeth correlated with the finish line depth. CONCLUSIONS Complex partial adhesive preparation designs affect the trueness and precision of IOSs, resulting in significant differences among them. Interproximal preparations should take into account the IOS's resolution and placing the finish line close to adjacent structures should be avoided.

Abstract
From the widespread use of smartphones and tablets to the multitude of applications available, older adults are showing an interest in utilizing technology to maintain their independence and to improve their quality of life. As technology continues to advance and be incorporated into many day-to-day activities, the baby boom generation will see these changes affecting the way they access and utilize dental services. Innovative toothbrushes and chemotherapeutics are continuing to be developed and utilized by many older adults. Within the dental office, older adults are seeing greater application of technology in every day dental procedures. These include the use of teledentistry, artificial intelligence (AI), innovative restorative materials, digitization of fixed and removable prosthodontics, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans to guide dental implant placement and endodontic procedures. There is also new technology to aid in cancer detection and shielding during cancer treatment. Improved communication between the medical and dental fields has become increasingly necessary to facilitate effective patient care and a few innovative healthcare systems have begun to consolidate these services. Overall, the baby boom generation will continue to see dental innovations that will change the way they experience everyday life and dental services.

Abstract
The cementation of indirect restoration is one of the most important steps in prosthetic and restorative dentistry. Cementation aims to bond the prosthetic restoration to the prepared enamel or enamel and dentine. Successful cementation protocols prevent biofilm formation at the margin between tooth and restoration and minimize mechanical and biological complications. With the advancements in dental cements, they have been modified to be versatile in terms of handling, curing, and bond strengths. This review presents updates on dental cements, focusing on the composition, properties, advantages, limitations, and indications of the various cements available. Currently, dental restorations are made from various biomaterials, and depending on each clinical case, an appropriate luting material will be selected. There is no luting material that can be universally used. Therefore, it is important to distinguish the physical, mechanical, and biological properties of luting materials in order to identify the best options for each case. Nowadays, the most commonly used dental cements are glass-ionomer and resin cement. The type, shade, thickness of resin cement and the shade of the ceramic, all together, have a tangible influence on the final restoration color. Surface treatments of the restoration increase the microtensile bond strength. Hence, the proper surface treatment protocol of both the substrate and restoration surfaces is needed before cementation. Additionally, the manufacturer's instructions for the thin cement-layer thickness are important for the long-term success of the restoration.

Abstract
The color-matching ability of single-shade composites Omnichroma (OMN) and Omnichroma Flow (OCF) is ensured by structural color, which arises from monodisperse 260 nm spherical fillers. This study evaluated how filler load influences the color adjustment potential of composite restorations to human teeth of various shades. The performance of composites containing the 260 nm spherical fillers -OMN (79 wt%), OCF (71 wt%), and experimental composites R1 (65 wt%), and R2 (60 wt%)- was compared to two conventional A2-shade composites and a transparent composite. Additionally, the translucency parameter, spectral reflectance, and light transmission properties were assessed. Composites with a lower load of the 260 nm spherical fillers exhibited lower light diffusion and lower reflectance in the yellow-to-red range (580-650 nm), which is characteristic for the structural color of OMN and OCF. The best color adjustment was achieved with OCF, presumably due to its high translucency and uniform spectral reflectance.

Abstract
The recently introduced resin composites with a universal shade are claimed to match any tooth color. In this study, it was examined how composite thickness affects the color adjustment of conventional and universal-shade composites to background dentin. Thirty sound human central incisors of various shade were used, and color differences between their intact labial surfaces, exposed dentin surfaces and composite restorations (thickness 1-3 mm) were evaluated. In addition, the translucency, light transmission characteristics, and spectral reflectance of the composites were measured. The results showed that universal-shade composites outperformed conventional composites of A2 shade in the adjustment of hue and chroma (p<0.05) but not in lightness (p>0.05). The color adjustment potential of all composites significantly decreased as their thickness increased (p<0.05). The effect of thickness on Omnichroma and Omnichroma Flow was less marked, presumably because of their higher translucency (p<0.05) and structural coloration which induces light reflectance in the yellow-to-red range.
