Influence of various cleaning solutions on the geometry, roughness, gloss, hardness, and flexural strength of 3D-printed zirconia

This study aimed to investigate the impact of various cleaning solutions on the geometry, roughness, gloss, hardness, and flexural strength of 3D-printed zirconia. Cleaning solutions, including isopropyl alcohol (IPA, 99.9%), ethyl alcohol (EtOH, 99.9%), and tripropylene glycol monomethyl ether (TPM, ≥ 97.5%), were diluted to a concentration of 70% and categorized into six groups: IPA99, EtOH99, TPM97, IPA70, EtOH70, and TPM70. Zirconia discs, printed via digital light processing, were sintered after cleaning. The geometry, roughness, gloss, hardness, and flexural strength were analyzed. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA with Tukey's post hoc test (p < 0.05). The thickness of TPM70 was the highest. The diameter of TPM70 was significantly larger than that of EtOH99 and IPA70 (p < 0.05). The weight of the TPM groups was significantly higher than that of IPA70 (p < 0.05). The roughness Ra of TPM70 was significantly greater than that of IPA99, EtOH99, and EtOH70 (p < 0.05). The differences in surface gloss, hardness, and flexural strength among the different groups were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Different cleaning solutions did not affect the surface gloss, hardness, and flexural strength of 3D-printed zirconia. High and low concentrations of the same cleaning solution did not affect the surface gloss, hardness, and flexural strength. IPA70, TPM97, and EtOH can be considered viable post-printing cleaning alternatives to the traditional gold standard, IPA99.

3D-printed short-span hybrid composite implant-supported restorations fabricated through tilting stereolithography: A retrospective clinical study on 85 patients with 1 year of follow-up

PURPOSE

To report the clinical results obtained with fixed short-span (single crowns [SCs] and fixed partial prostheses [FPPs]) implant-supported hybrid composite restorations fabricated through tilting stereolithography (TSLA).

METHODS

This retrospective clinical study included 85 patients who had been restored with 95 fixed short-span implant-supported hybrid composite (Irix Max®, DWS Systems) restorations (70 SCs and 25 FPPs up to three units) fabricated with TSLA. The full-digital model-free workflow was based on intraoral implant scanning, computer-assisted design (CAD) and 3D printing using TSLA (Dfab®, DWS Systems). The primary outcomes were the marginal adaptation, the quality of the occlusal and interproximal contact points, and the chromatic integration of the restorations, assessed independently by two experienced operators (a prosthodontist and a periodontist). A score from 1 to 5 (with 5 as the highest value, 4 for satisfactory quality, 3 for acceptable quality, and 2 and 1 as the lowest values, expressing unsatisfactory quality) was assigned by each operator to each restoration at delivery. The secondary outcomes were the survival and success of the restorations at the 1-year follow-up. The restoration was defined as successful in the absence of any complications throughout the follow-up period. A statistical analysis was conducted.

RESULTS

For the quality of the marginal closure and occlusal and interproximal contact points, the 3D-printed hybrid composite restorations scored highly; the aesthetic integration was satisfactory. One year after placement, all restorations survived, with a low incidence (4.2 % overall, 5.7 % SCs) of complications (two abutment screw loosenings, two decementation of the restorations, and one upper portion of the hybrid abutment decemented from the titanium base), for a success rate of 95.8 %.

CONCLUSIONS

Within the limits of this study (retrospective design, follow-up limited to 1 year from the delivery, and only cemented restorations included) fixed short-span implant-supported hybrid composite crowns and bridges fabricated through TSLA were clinically precise, presenting a low incidence of complications at 1 year.

STATEMENT OF CLINICAL RELEVANCE

The use of TSLA printing technology can open new perspectives for the treatment of small edentulous gaps with definitive implant-supported prosthetic restorations.

Visual Versus Digital Color Determination of 3D-Printed Teeth as an Exercise in Dental Students' Education

Visual color determination is part of the daily routine in dental practice. However, it is not a part of dental education so far. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether visual or digital tooth color determination of 3D-printed teeth is a reliable tool for inexperienced dentistry students. Preclinical dental students evaluated eleven 3D-printed, tooth-shaped samples (VarseoSmile Crown plus, BEGO, Bremen, Germany) of different color shades. Visual shade determination using a reference scale (3D-Master Toothguide (3DM_TG), VITA Zahnfabrik, Bad Säckingen, Germany), followed by a digital color determination using a spectrophotometer (VITA Easyshade V, (ES_V), VITA Zahnfabrik), was performed. Color deviation was calculated in the Lab* color space (ΔE00) and converted into CIELAB 2000. The results were evaluated using the Mann-Whitney U test and the Wilcoxon Rank Sum test (α = 0.05). Significant differences between visual and digital color determination were proven (p < 0.001). Visual color determination (3DM_TG) showed a mean deviation (ΔE00 ± 95%CI) of 6.49 ± 0.47. Digital color determination (ES_V) showed significantly lower mean deviations of ΔE00 of 1.44 ± 0.58. Digital tooth color measurement using a spectrophotometer was a more reliable tool for the color determination of 3D-printed teeth for inexperienced dentistry students.
