Natural resourced polysaccharides: Preparation, purification, structural elucidation, structure-activity relationships and regulating intestinal flora, a system review

Natural resourced polysaccharides (NRPs), as metabolites synthesized during activity of organisms, widely present in animal cell membranes or plant and microbial cell walls. NRPs have garnered extensive attention in the fields of medicine, foods, and farming owing to their distinct bioactivities and structural diversity. Despite the burgeoning growth in NRPs research, the available literature focuses primarily on a review of specific polysaccharides, necessitating an urgent need for a comprehensive summary of NRPs to offer readers a whole landscape of current advancements in NRPs research. Based on this, this article comprehensively reviews the latest research progress regarding preparation, purification, structure elucidation, structure-activity relationships and regulation of intestinal flora of NRPs in electronic databases, such as PubMed, Wiley, ScienceDirect and Web of Science from last 5 years. This review analyzes the effects of various extraction techniques on NRPs and also delves into the intrinsic correlation between the biological activity and structure of NRPs, highlighting that chemical modification can enhance their structural diversity and confer novel or improved biological functions. Moreover, this article extensively explores the application of NRP in promoting intestinal microecology balance, underscoring its significant potential as a probiotic initiator. This review lays a solid theoretical foundation for the future research and development of NRPs.

Isolation, structures, bioactivities, application and future prospective for polysaccharides from Tremella aurantialba: A review

Since ancient times, Tremella aurantialba has been proposed to have medicinal and food benefits. Modern phytochemistry and pharmacological studies have demonstrated that polysaccharides, the main components from T. aurantialba appear to be an all-round talent resisting a variety of chronic inflammatory diseases and protecting against different types of tumors, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. These health and pharmacological benefits have gained much attention from scholars around the world. Further, more and more methods for polysaccharides extraction, purification, structure identification have been proposed. Significantly, the bioactivity of fungus polysaccharides is affected by many factors such as extraction and purification conditions and chemical structure. This paper provides an overview of recent advances in the isolation, structural features and biological effects of polysaccharides derived from T. aurantialba, covers recent advances in the field and outlines future research and applications of these polysaccharides.

Advances and challenges in ginseng research from 2011 to 2020: the phytochemistry, quality control, metabolism, and biosynthesis

Covering: 2011 to the end of 2020Panax species (Araliaceae), particularly P. ginseng, P. quinquefolius, and P. notoginseng, have a long history of medicinal use because of their remarkable tonifying effects, and currently serve as crucial sources for various healthcare products, functional foods, and cosmetics, aside from their vast clinical preparations. The huge market demand on a global scale prompts the continuous prosperity in ginseng research concerning the discovery of new compounds, precise quality control, ADME (absorption/disposition/metabolism/excretion), and biosynthesis pathways. Benefitting from the ongoing rapid development of analytical technologies, e.g. multi-dimensional chromatography (MDC), personalized mass spectrometry (MS) scan strategies, and multi-omics, highly recognized progress has been made in driving ginseng analysis towards "systematicness, integrity, personalization, and intelligentization". Herein, we review the advances in the phytochemistry, quality control, metabolism, and biosynthesis pathway of ginseng over the past decade (2011-2020), with 410 citations. Emphasis is placed on the introduction of new compounds isolated (saponins and polysaccharides), and the emerging novel analytical technologies and analytical strategies that favor ginseng's authentic use and global consumption. Perspectives on the challenges and future trends in ginseng analysis are also presented.

Solvent Supercritical Fluid Technologies to Extract Bioactive Compounds from Natural Sources: A Review

Supercritical fluid technologies offer a propitious method for drug discovery from natural sources. Such methods require relatively short processing times, produce extracts with little or no organic co-solvent, and are able to extract bioactive molecules whilst minimising degradation. Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) provides a range of benefits, as well as offering routes to overcome some of the limitations that exist with the conventional methods of extraction. Unfortunately, SFE-based methods are not without their own shortcomings; two major ones being: (1) the high establishment cost; and (2) the selective solvent nature of CO₂, i.e., that CO₂ only dissolves small non-polar molecules, although this can be viewed as a positive outcome provided bioactive molecules are extracted during solvent-based SFE. This review provides an update of SFE methods for natural products and outlines the main operating parameters for extract recovery. Selected processing considerations are presented regarding supercritical fluids and the development and application of ultrasonic-assisted SFE methods, as well as providing some of the key aspects of SFE scalability.
