Parental support for free school lunches in Australian primary schools: associated factors and perceived barriers

OBJECTIVE

(1) To explore the feasibility of such programmes in Australia, this study examined parents' views on free school lunch provision. (2) To examine the associations between parents' demographic and personal characteristics and their support for free universal school lunches.

DESIGN

An online cross-sectional survey of parents.

SETTING

Australia, April 2021.

PARTICIPANTS

Seven hundred and eighty-seven parents took the survey. They had a mean age of 40. The respondents were predominantly female (95 %) and had a university degree (72 %).

RESULTS

Fifty-three percentage of the respondents agreed that all students should have access to healthy and well-balanced, free school lunches. Parents were concerned about healthiness, catering, allergies and cost of school-provided school lunches. Ethnic background, universalism values and education levels were significantly associated with support for free school lunch provision. Non-native English-speaking parents were almost three times more likely to support free universal lunches in primary schools than their native English-speaking counterparts. Parents with higher universalism-concern values were more likely to endorse free lunches in primary school. However, the level of education was negatively associated with parents' support for free school lunches.

CONCLUSIONS

The survey results highlight the complexity of parental views on free school lunch provision. Parents' concerns regarding lunches should be considered in developing school lunch programmes that meet the needs and preferences of diverse communities. These findings can be used to guide future primary school lunch provision initiatives.

Caregiver perceptions of England's universal infant school meal provision during the COVID-19 pandemic

The United Nations (UN) recognises free school meals as critical, yet widely disrupted by COVID-19. We investigate caregiver perceptions and responses to interruptions to the universal infant free school meal programme (UIFSM) in Cambridgeshire, England, using an opt-in online survey. From 586 responses, we find 21 per cent of respondents' schools did not provide UIFSM after lockdown or advised caregivers to prepare packed lunches. Where provided, caregivers perceived a substantial decline in quality and variety of meals, influencing uptake. Direction to bring packed lunches, which caregivers reported to have contained ultra-processed foods of lower nutritional quality, influenced caregiver behaviour rather than safety concerns as claimed by industry. The quality and variety of meals, and school and government policy, had greater impact than concerns for safety. In the UK and at the international level, policymakers, local governments, and schools must act to reverse the trend of ultra-processed foods in packed lunches, while improving the perceived quality of meals provided at schools.

"That's His Choice Not Mine!" Parents' Perspectives on Providing a Packed Lunch for Their Children in Primary School

OBJECTIVE

To examine factors influencing parents' selection of packed lunches over a school lunch, their choices in food preparation, and the role of children within these.

DESIGN

A qualitative approach using semistructured focus group and individual interviews.

SETTING

Four primary schools in a UK local authority.

PARTICIPANTS

Twenty parents providing a packed lunch for their children (aged 5-11 years).

ANALYSIS

An inductive thematic approach was used to identify categories and themes. The researchers maintained rigor in the data analysis through internal discussion and review until consensus was reached.

RESULTS

Children emerged as active decision makers exerting substantial power particularly in the initial decision to have a packed lunch, and then in influencing the lunch's contents. The packed lunch could be a source of anxiety for some parents; however, ultimately parents' attitudes and perceptions revolved around the key requirement that the lunch was eaten. Providing a packed lunch was a means of achieving this.

CONCLUSIONS

This study highlights children's growing authority over everyday food decisions. Further research is needed to explore children's perceptions of their role in food provision. The study's findings have implications for school food, nutrition education, and school-based interventions. Frameworks that look to improve children's nutrition in this area should reflect children's growing status as food decision makers and consider how this can be employed to support and sustain positive changes.
