Development of Home Beauty Devices for Facial Rejuvenation: Establishment of Efficacy Evaluation System

Background

Home beauty devices for facial rejuvenation utilizing technologies such as radiofrequency, microcurrent, and light emitting diode have gained widespread attention due to their claimed ability to improve skin tightness and elasticity, making them popular among consumers. However, there is controversy within the industry regarding the effectiveness and safety of these devices.

Objective

This study aims to verify the safety and effectiveness of these home beauty devices in treating skin aging based on relevant efficacy evaluation indicators.

Methods

A systematic search of PubMed and web of science was conducted to include original research literature on the efficacy of home beauty devices for facial rejuvenation over the past two decades. The selected literature was processed and analyzed based on efficacy evaluation indicators such as sample size, follow-up period, experimental results, adverse reactions, and others.

Results

After screening, a total of 18 clinical studies were included. A comprehensive analysis of the experimental results and adverse reaction indicators from existing literature revealed that home beauty devices for facial rejuvenation can improve skin aging to a certain extent. Apart from transient redness and swelling, no other adverse reactions were observed.

Conclusion

Despite the variety of home beauty devices for facial rejuvenation available in the market, corresponding research reports are limited. Existing studies suffer from issues such as small sample sizes and short follow-up periods, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive efficacy evaluation system. Furthermore, the physical stimulation of meridian acupoints by home beauty devices for facial rejuvenation may meet the multi-dimensional anti-aging needs of patients, suggesting a potential direction for future research.

Efficacy and safety of a noninvasive, home-based radiofrequency device for facial rejuvenation: An open-label, intraindividual controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Wrinkle formation is the most visible characteristic of facial aging. Radiofrequency (RF) technology is currently utilized to reduce facial wrinkles and contribute to skin rejuvenation.

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the efficacy and safety of a noninvasive, home-based RF device applied for facial rejuvenation in Chinese people.

METHODS

A single-center, open-label, intraindividual controlled trial was performed on subjects who received an 8-week treatment of the RF device. A total of 22 female individuals aged 25-60 years with Fitzpatrick skin type III-IV were enrolled. Efficacy of treatment was subjectively evaluated using the Fitzpatrick Wrinkle Classification Scale (FWCS) assessed by physician or overall satisfaction of subject with a 10-point VAS, and objectively using the skin ultrasound examination as well as the 3D skin analysis system. Adverse event was recorded at each visit.

RESULTS

In comparison with the baseline, evaluator-assessed FWCS scores showed significant improvement at 4 weeks (p < 0.005) and 8 weeks (p < 0.005) after treatment. All subjects reported different degrees of improvement in facial wrinkles after 8 weeks of treatment. The results of skin ultrasound examination revealed significant increase of the dermal thickness at week 8 (p < 0.05) as compared to the baseline. In addition, a significant decrease in the proportion and density of perioral wrinkles evaluated by the 3D skin analysis system was observed from baseline to week 4. The treatment was well-tolerated, and no serious adverse event was observed.

CONCLUSION

This noninvasive, home-based RF device was effective in improving skin texture and elasticity with a safe and well-tolerated treating procedure.

A novel preoperative analysis method of upper blepharoplasty: Movable pulley concept

BACKGROUND

Up to date, many surgical techniques have been introduced on upper eyelid rejuvenation. Despite those technical advances, little attention has been put on objective preoperative analysis methods.

OBJECTIVES

The current study introduces our simplified, versatile, and predictable upper eyelid analysis method of upper blepharoplasty patients.

METHODS

A total of 1509 surgeries were performed from March 2017 to May 2021 using our preoperative analysis method.

RESULTS

As a result of the operation based on this new analysis method, it was possible to individualize the plan according to the patient's needs and obtain satisfactory outcomes.

CONCLUSIONS

Using our simplified, versatile, and predictable upper eyelid analysis method, we could counsel the surgical result with high predictability. In addition, it is a highly recommended method for beginners as it is easy to understand the mechanism of double eyelid surgery.

Home-based devices in dermatology: a systematic review of safety and efficacy

There is increasing demand for home-based devices for the treatment of dermatologic conditions and cosmesis. Commercially available devices include intense pulsed light, laser diodes, radiofrequency, light-emitting diodes, and ultraviolet B phototherapy. The objective of this report is to evaluate the current evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of home-based devices for the treatment of skin conditions. A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and Cinahl was conducted on November 9, 2020 using PRISMA guidelines. Original research articles that investigated the efficacy and safety of home-based devices for dermatologic use were included. Bibliographies were screened for additional relevant articles. Strength of evidence was graded using the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine guidelines. Clinical recommendations were then made based on the quality of the existing literature. After review, 37 clinical trials were included—19 were randomized controlled trials, 16 were case series, and 2 were non-randomized controlled trials. Ultimately, from our analysis, we recommend the home-based use of intense pulsed light for hair removal, laser diodes for androgenic alopecia, low power radiofrequency for rhytides and wrinkles, and light-emitting diodes for acne vulgaris. Trials investigating ultraviolet B phototherapy for psoriasis revealed mixed evidence for home treatments compared to clinic treatments. All devices had favorable safety profiles with few significant adverse events. Limitations to our review include a limited number of randomized controlled trials as well as a lack of data on the long-term efficacy and safety of each device.

Effects of device variables to radiofrequency (RF) applications

RF devices have frequency, power and duration setting options, it is important to make sure that the device meets the targeted values at the head output. This study was made to evaluate the RF device output value accuracy and the effects of different frequencies on the tissue heat levels. RF was applied to invitro tissues obtained from surgical operations, and invivo tissues during operations. Heat differences and depth were measured by laser/IR thermometer and thermal infrared camera. First, the output frequency and power values provided by the device were approved. Then, three three heads (monopolar, bipolar and tripolar) with three different frequencies (1,7, 20 MHz) were used. Depth of heat increase was evaluated in millimeters. The results showed that temperature increase varied between 10°C and 30°C at different depths using different frequencies. Heating of the skin with a radiofrequency device in a therapeutic dose is possible if the appropriate frequency and adequate power values are applied. Because the therapeutic temperature is close to the complication limit, the practitioner should be an expert using the device, well-knowledgeable about the regional skin structure and thickness, as well as be able to properly adjust the application doses in order to get therapeutic results.

Efficacy of phototherapy to treat facial ageing when using a red versus an amber LED: a protocol for a randomised controlled trial

INTRODUCTION

The skin undergoes morphological and physiological changes with the advancing age of an individual. These changes may be caused by intrinsic and extrinsic factors that contribute to cellular ageing and consequent skin ageing. The term photoageing is used to characterise the ageing of the skin caused by solar radiation. Clinically, the skin becomes more flaccid, thicker and hyperpigmented, while there is an early appearance of wrinkles and other skin changes, such as skin cancer. Nowadays, there are numerous treatments for ageing skin, and one of them is with the use of phototherapy, which uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The objective of this study will be to evaluate the percentages of reduction in the volume of periocular wrinkles when treated with red and amber LEDs.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS

All of the participants will receive photobiomodulation to treat their periocular wrinkles. They will be using red and amber LEDs, with one colour being used on each hemiface. The facial side to be treated with each colour will be randomised. After an interval of 180 days, the participants will receive a cross-treatment. The primary variable of the study is the volume of periocular wrinkles (crow's feet), which will be measured by a VisioFace equipment. The secondary variables are elasticity (measured by Cutometer) and hydration (measured by Corneometer). Quality of life and self-assessment of the participants will be measured using the adapted Melasma Quality of Life scale - Brazilian Portuguese adaption (MelasQoL-BP) and Skindex-29 questionnaires. All of the variables will be measured before and after a group of 10 sessions.

This protocol was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Nove de Julho University (acceptance number: 2.550.732). This trial has been registered in the Registro Brasileiro de Ensaios Clínicos (Brazilian Clinical Trials Registry) (REBEC number: RBR-6YFCBM). This study is not recruiting yet.
