Perceptions of caring behaviours: A comparison of surgical oncology nurses and patients

Turkish psychometric characteristics of the humanistic practice ability of nursing scale: differences by education, working year, and professional satisfaction

BACKGROUND

Humanistic nursing practices scientifically improve the knowledge structure of nursing, enrich its theoretical system and support its development. Therefore, it is crucial to evaluate the humanistic practice abilities of nurses.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to test the psycholinguistic features, language and construct validity of the Humanistic Practice Ability of Nursing Scale and to examine it according to nurses' demographic characteristics.

DESIGN AND METHODS

This study was a methodological type of analytical research conducted with 397 clinical nurses working in a hospital. A questionnaire including demographic information and evaluating empathy and compassion adequacy was used. Data were analyzed using explanatory and confirmatory factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha, item-total score correlation, split-half analysis, t-test, analysis of variance and correlation analysis.

RESULTS

The scale consists of 29 items and four factors, explaining 61.15% of the total variance. Factor loads were > 0.30. confirmatory factor analysis results were χ2/df: 2.58, GFI: 0.86, TLI: 0.91, IFI: 0.92, CFI: 0.92, RMSEA: 0.06, and SRMR: 0.03. The Cronbach alpha value for the full scale is 0.95. A significant relationship was found between the scale and empathy and compassion proficiency. It was observed that the scale scores differed according to the nurses' education level, working years and job satisfaction (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

This study shows that the Turkish version of the HPAN scale is valid and reliable for 29 items and four factors. The humanistic practice ability of nurses differ according to postgraduate education, years of working in the profession and professional satisfaction.

The Therapeutic Nurse-Patient Relationship in Hemodialysis: A Pilot Mixed-Method Study on the Perceived Quality of Nurses' Attitudes and Caring Behaviors

Chronic kidney disease affects many people around the world, leading those affected to replacement therapy such as hemodialysis. People who undergo hemodialysis generally undertake 2-3 treatments per week, lasting about 3-4 h each; patients spend many hours per week in contact with nurses, building a therapeutic relationship. The purpose of this work is to assess the quality of nurses' perceived caring attitudes and behaviors and to determine their perceptions regarding the importance of the therapeutic relationship with the assisted patients. A self-reported questionnaire composed of three sections was administered to nurses; the first section included sociodemographic questions, the second the Caring Nurse-Patient Interaction Scale (CNPI-23), and the third part of the questionnaire was composed of open-ended questions investigating patients' expectations according to nurses, the relevance of the therapeutic relationship on their work, and its effect on themselves and/or their own job satisfaction. Statistically significant correlations and trends have been observed between nurses' sociodemographic data and the CNPI-23 items. In the clinical care area, nurses who have a post-basic degree or more years of experience feel more competent than those in other categories; in the relational care area, women tend to feel more competent than men. No correlations were found between the humanistic and comfort care areas. According to the results, the post-basic training of dialysis nurses and the adoption of organizational strategies that encourage nurse retention should be enhanced. This study was not registered.

Development and Validation of the Missed Nursing Care Tool for Pre-Operative Patients with Lung Cancer in China

Introduction

Current research suggests that missed nursing care is widespread in preoperative lung cancer patients in China, and preoperative airway management nursing care for lung cancer patients is not standardized. Missed nursing care for preoperative lung cancer patients, on the other hand, is rarely investigated, particularly from the patient's perspective. This study aimed to develop and validate the MISSCARE Survey for pre-operative patients with lung cancer in China.

Methods

This study generated the preliminary draft of the MISSCARE Survey - Lung Cancer Patient (MS-LCP) and tested its reliability and stability through three rounds of lung cancer resection (494, 50, and 309 cases, respectively). 20 patients and 6 experts determined the face and content validity. EFA and CFA assessed construct and convergent validity. Internal consistency, including Cronbach's alpha, Spearman-Brown reliability, and re-test reliability, was also examined.

Results

The scale contained 15 items, including specific care, communicative care, timely care, and basic care. KMO was 0.932 (> 0.6), and Bartlett's Test of Sphericity showed P = 0.000 (<0.05). The attribution factor's item loads ranged from 0.765 to 0.853, accounting for 82.20% of the variation. The scale's Cronbach's alpha, Spearman-Brown, and retest reliability were 0.945, 0.879, and 0.824. CFA showed goodness of fit (RMSEA = 0.021, χ²/df = 1.138, GFI = 0.900, AGFI = 0.945, CFI = 0.996, NFI = 0.967, IFI = 0.996). For each dimension, AVE ranged from 0.555 to 0.717 (>0.50) and CR from 0.861 to 0.904 (>0.70).

Conclusion

The MS-LCP was reliable and valid in this study, making it appropriate for the Chinese lung cancer patient population. This tool is more objective in its presentation of missed nursing care, assisting nursing staff in optimizing nursing procedures before surgery, increasing the implementation of higher-quality tumor care, and promoting the recovery of lung cancer surgery patients.

The effect of the training of presence in care (TPinCare) on the care-oriented patient-nurse interaction and the caring behaviors of nurses working with oncology patients: A randomized controlled trial

AIM

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of "The Training of Presence in Care-TPinCare" of nurses working with oncology patients on care-oriented patient-nurse interaction and caring behaviors.

BACKGROUND

Helping the individual to realize, protect and maintain his/her existence can be considered as the basis of "good nursing care". Presence is a way of care for the nurse and patient that fosters human-to-human bonding and deep contact experience and healing.

DESIGN

This is a randomized controlled study.

METHOD

Data were collected between January 2019 and May 2019. The sample selection consisted of 52 nurses working with oncology patients, 26 interventions and 26 controls in accordance with the criteria of inclusion, exclusion and exemption by randominization and blinding. The data were collected by using the "Nurses Introductory Features Form", "Caring Behaviors Scale - 24 " and "Caring Nurse-Patient Interaction Scale". The training was applied to nurses in the intervention group. In data analysis used SAS 9,4 program; statistically Mean score, t test, Repeated Measures ANOVA. In the context of these effect sizes, the power of the study was calculated to be 0.99 for each scale. This study was conducted in line with the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki.

RESULTS

According to the control group of nurses in the intervention group, there were no statistically significant differences in the mean scores of caring behaviors at different measurement times. A statistically significant difference was found in favor of the intervention group for caring nursing patient interaction general, sub-dimensions of "importance", "competence" and "practicality", in nursing interventions (p < 0.05). Although the pretest mean scores of the nurses in the intervention group were lower compared with the control group, it was found that the posttest mean scores increased and the level of follow-up was maintained by a little increasing or decreasing. It was determined that there was no significant change in the posttest and follow-up scores of the nurses in the control group according to the pre-test mean scores.

CONCLUSIONS

This study showed that TPinCare has a positive effect on nurses working with oncology patients with respect to care quality perception and viewing "importance", "competence" and "practicality", of attitude and behaviours related to care-focused patient nurse interactions. In this context, it can be suggested to continue the trainings which will contribute to caring behaviors and patient-nurse interactions of nurses and to support them with institutional contribution.

Nurse and Patient Assessments of COVID-19 Care Quality in China: A Comparative Survey Study

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the quality of nursing care was a concern due to nurses' overwhelming workload. A cross-sectional design was conducted to compare perceptions between nurses and patients about the quality of nursing care for COVID-19 patients and to explore factors associated with these perceptions. Data were collected during the COVID-19 pandemic from 17 March to 13 April 2020 in five hospitals in Wuhan, China. Perceptions of care quality were assessed among nurses and patients using the Caring Behaviors Inventory. Nurses rated the quality of caring behaviors higher than patients. Both nurses and patients rated technical caring behaviors at high levels and rated the item related to "spending time with the patient" the lowest, while patients rated it much lower than nurses. Nurses' sex, participation in ethical training organized by the hospital, professional title, being invited to Wuhan, and length of working experience in years were significantly associated with nurses' self-evaluated caring behaviors. Moreover, inpatient setting and communication mode were significantly associated with patients' self-evaluated caring behaviors.

Role of self-efficacy in nursing organizational climate: A way to develop nurses' humanistic practice ability

AIM

This study aimed to investigate the impact of self-efficacy on the relationship between organizational climate and humanistic practice ability (HPA) in Chinese nurses.

BACKGROUND

To date, studies on the effect of organizational climate on nursing care have focused on care outcomes rather than care processes. Thus, this effect remains poorly understood.

METHODS

A total of 757 participants were sampled from three tertiary hospitals in Guangdong Province from November to December 2019; subsequently, they completed a structured electronic questionnaire. A structural equation model was used to explore the impact of nursing organizational climate on nurses' HPA.

RESULTS

A total of 688 valid questionnaires were collected. The nurses' average HPA score was 107.82 (SD 12.47). There was a positive correlation between organizational climate and HPA (r = .409, p < .05). Additionally, self-efficacy mediated this relationship (p < .01).

CONCLUSIONS

This study provides new insights into nursing organizational climate, self-efficacy and nurses' HPA.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT

The significant mediating effect of self-efficacy suggests that managers should implement nurse professional development programmes using targeted strategies to foster greater self-efficacy, which could improve the quality of care and nurse-patient relationships.

Association between perception of caring behaviors and self-efficacy in patients with cardiovascular disease at coronary care units: a cross-sectional study

Background

Assessing and improving patient self-efficacy are among the major roles of nurses. Nurses are also responsible for providing direct patient care, and they play a major role in improving patient care quality. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate nurses’ care-giving behaviors. This study aimed to determine the association between caring behaviors and self-efficacy in patients with cardiovascular disease.

Methods

In this cross-sectional study, 400 patients with cardiovascular disease who were admitted to hospitals in Jahrom, southern Iran, were selected through a stratified sampling. The Caring Behaviors Inventory and the Strategies Used by People to Promote Health questionnaires were used to collect data. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and Spearman correlation coefficient in SPSS ver. 22.

Results

Results showed significant relationships between perception of caring behaviors and self-efficacy (r=0.16, P=0.001) as well as subscales of respectful deference to others (r=0.12, P=0.01), assurance of human presence (r=0.12, P=0.02), and positive connectedness (r=0.18, P=0.001). Additionally, among the subscales of caring behaviors, “attentive to others’ experience,” with a mean of 5.17±1.10, was the highest priority and “positive connectedness,” with a mean of 4.81±1.31, was the lowest priority for patients. The mean self-efficacy score was 73.94±29.78, and 169 patients (43.2%) had low self-efficacy.

Conclusions

Given the positive relationship between perception of caring behaviors and self-efficacy in patients with cardiovascular disease, self-efficacy could be improved by paying more attention to patient care priorities and improving patient perception of caring behaviors.

Caring behaviors, moral sensitivity, and emotional intelligence in intensive care nurses: A descriptive study

PURPOSE

To evaluate the relationship of caring behaviors with moral sensitivity, emotional intelligence and descriptive characteristics in intensive care nurses.

METHOD

Descriptive study. The sample of this study consisted of 156 nurses. The data were collected using introductory information form, caring behaviors inventory, moral sensitivity questionnaire, and emotional intelligence scale. The factors affecting caring behavior were determined using stepwise multiple linear regression.

FINDING

It was determined that high education level, working in shifts, as well as appraisal of emotion subscale of emotional intelligence scale and also autonomy, expressing benevolence, and following praxis subscales of moral sensitivity questionnaire were high predictors for caring behaviors.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Descriptive characteristics, moral sensitivity, and emotional intelligence are related to high caring behavior in intensive care nurses.

Striving to reduce suffering: A Phenomenological Study of nurses experience in caring for children with cancer in Ghana

Aim

To provide insights into nurses lived experiences in caring for children with cancer.

Background

Little is known about the paediatric oncology nurses shared practices of caring for children with cancer in Ghana.

Design

A hermeneutic phenomenological qualitative study.

Methods

A semi-structured interview with 14 purposely sampled Ghanaian paediatric oncology nurses. Findings were analysed using Diekelman, Allen and Tanner's approach.

Results

The theme "Striving to reduce suffering" and three relational subthemes: "knowing children's needs," "Rendering a hopeful fight" and "Ensuring continuity and coordination of care" emerged. Increased awareness of this phenomenon for the nurses who care for these children is vital to ensure quality and holistic care that is meaningful and satisfying by nurses for children with cancer. Paediatric oncology nurses can use the result of the study to evaluate their caring practice and as an avenue to develop better caring practice.

Predictors of caring ability and its dimensions among nurses in China: A cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Caring is an essential component of professional nursing practice, which directly affects the quality of patient care. Nurses' caring ability may not meet patients' demands for high-quality care. There are challenges in designing and implementing interventions to improve nurses' caring ability, especially in China. Understanding Chinese nurses' caring ability and related influential factors serves as the basis for effective interventions to improve their ability to care for patients.

AIM

To describe the caring ability of nurses and its potential predictors in China.

METHODS

From January to February 2018, a cross-sectional survey was conducted among 2304 Registered Nurses working at different levels of hospitals across 29 provinces in China. The structured online survey included socio-demographic information, Caring Ability Inventory, Caring Efficacy Scale and Professional Quality of Life. Descriptive statistics, univariate analyses and multivariate analyses were conducted.

RESULTS

Overall caring ability and its three dimensions of the participants were all significantly lower than the Nkongho' norm, an international scoring standard of nurse's caring ability. Age, employment type, workplace, caring efficacy, compassion satisfaction, burnout and secondary traumatic stress were predictors of knowing, explaining 41.8% of the variance. Predictors of courage were educational level, bereavement experience, caring efficacy, compassion satisfaction and burnout (31.7% of the variance). Educational level, workplace, exposure to critically ill patients, caring efficacy, compassion satisfaction, burnout and secondary traumatic stress were influencing factors of patience, accounting for 19.5% of the variance.

CONCLUSIONS

Chinese nurses' caring ability, with patience, knowing, and courage in descending order. Particular attention needs to be paid to the courage dimension of the nurses' caring ability. Further, the predictors of overall caring ability and each dimension were diverse. These results indicate that nurse educators and administrators need to identify training priorities and design targeted interventions based on the influencing factors.

Nurses' Self-Assessment of Caring Behaviors in Nurse-Patient Interactions: A Cross-Sectional Study

Nurse-patient interactions based on caring behaviors ensure better working conditions and better-quality healthcare. The aim of this quantitative study is to examine how nurses self-assess the frequency of applying caring behaviors in nurse-patient interactions and to identify the differences in the application frequency of caring behaviors in relation to work experience and education level. The respondents were Bachelor of Science (BSc) nurses and nurses with basic training (VET) employed in different clinical departments of the Clinical Hospital Center in Croatia. The survey used the "Caring Nurse-Patient Interactions Scale (Nurse Version)". The respondents assessed the caring behaviors from the subscale "needs" as the most frequently applied (median (Me): 4.7; interquartile range (IQR): 4.4-4.9), while the least frequently applied were the procedures from the subscale "sensitivity" (Me: 3.8; IQR: 3.2-4.3). The VET nurses reported applying caring behaviors to the subscales "hope" (p < 0.001), "problem-solving" (p = 0.003), and "environment" (p = 0.021) more frequently than BSc nurses did. Compared with less experienced respondents, the respondents with more than 30 years of work experience applied the caring behaviors on the subscales "sensitivity" (p = 0.009), "expression of emotions" (p = 0.001), "problem-solving" (p = 0.008), and especially "humanism" and "spirituality" (p < 0.001) more frequently. The results indicate that respondents are more focused on applying skills or carrying out a task than on caring behaviors which is about demonstrating compassion, loving kindness, and relationships.

A comparative descriptive analysis of perceived quality of caring attitudes and behaviours between haemodialysis patients and their nurses

Aim

Despite its importance in nursing, perceived quality of the nurse-patient relationship has seldom been researched. This study sought to examine and compare the quality of caring attitudes and behaviours as perceived by haemodialysis patients and their nurses.

Design

This comparative descriptive study involved 140 haemodialysis patients and 101 nurses caring for them in ten haemodialysis units in the French-speaking part of Switzerland.

Methods

Participants completed a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Caring Nurse-Patient Interaction Scale (CNPI-70).

Results

Both nurses and patients reported a high frequency of caring attitudes and behaviours. Patients gave higher ratings than nurses did on all the caring dimensions, except spirituality. Implications are discussed.
