Abstract
Aims and background Emergency nurses are working in a stress-prone environment. It is critical to ensure adequate psychological aids to cope with the distress at work. The objective of this systematic review was to explore and evaluate the studies that have discussed the role of mindfulness-based interventions on occupational distress and resilience among emergency nursing professionals. Materials and methods This study was a systematic review. The databases used for this review were PubMed and Scopus from 2018 to 2023. Interventional studies published in English that used mindfulness-based techniques among emergency and critical care nurses to alleviate their occupational distress and burnout and improve resilience were considered for review. This systematic review adheres to the PRISMA guidelines. The study was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42024512071). Results Ten studies were found to be eligible and included in this review. Out of the 10 studies included, nine studies demonstrated the improvement of psychological well-being, compassion, and resilience followed by the intervention. Conclusion The findings of this systematic review suggest that mindfulness-centered interventions can be an effective strategy to cope with distress and burnout and in building compassion and resilience among the healthcare professionals who are employed at the emergency and critical care department in a hospital. Clinical significance Incorporating mindfulness-based practices and interventions in healthcare settings, especially among critical care and emergency departments may help in ameliorating the professional well-being of the staff which may result in a resilient work environment and improvement in the quality of patient care. Abstract
BACKGROUND The nursing field is the fourth most stressful occupation in the health sector. Emergency department nurses often face crises and unpredictable situations that can negatively affect their quality of life and the quality of care. This study aimed to investigate the determinants of work stress among ED nurses in Sleman, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. METHODS A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted. Participants (n = 122) were emergency nurses recruited through convenience sampling from four EDs in Sleman District, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Data were gathered using an online self-administered survey consisting of the workload, self-efficacy, and work stress questionnaires. Hierarchical linear regression analysis with the entry method was used to examine the main determinants of work stress. RESULTS The average work stress (38.29 ± 8), workload (30.83 ± 9.21), and self-efficacy (32.47 ± 3.61) scores were at a moderate level. Hierarchical linear regression showed that workplace, being a head nurse, and workload were the main determinants that contributed to 25.4 % of work stress among ED nurses. CONCLUSIONS The study results confirm that having a high workload, working in a private hospital, and being a head nurse are the main determinants of work stress among ED nurses in Sleman, Indonesia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The professional quality of life (ProQOL), encompassing emotional, physical, and psychological well-being, is profoundly influenced by the unique nursing experiences of emergency nurses. Understanding and effectively enhancing their professional well-being are of paramount importance. This study aimed to explore the relationship between family care, organizational support, and resilience with the ProQOL among emergency nurses. METHODS This cross-sectional study, conducted between May 1 and June 1, 2023, involved 118 emergency nurses from Hunan Provincial Brain Hospital. Demographic and work-related information were collected. ProQOL, family care, organizational support and resilience were assessed using validated scales. Statistical analysis was conducted to examine the associations between these variables. RESULTS Significant differences were observed in the two dimensions of ProQOL (compassion satisfaction and burnout) among emergency nurses with different age, marital status, technical titles, work experience and night shift frequency (P < 0.05). Furthermore, both organizational support and resilience demonstrated a significant positive correlation with compassion satisfaction, while exhibiting a significant negative correlation with burnout (P < 0.05). Additionally, the third dimension of ProQOL (secondary trauma stress) was significantly negatively correlated with resilience (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION This study elucidates the pivotal role of organizational support and resilience in influencing the professional quality of life among emergency nurses, highlighting the specific needs of younger and less-experienced practitioners. Our findings lay the groundwork for targeted interventions aimed at enhancing the occupational well-being and job satisfaction of nursing staff.

Abstract
The emergency department (ED) is a stressful workplace for nurses, due to heavy workload and work shifts, which affect sleep quality, causing occupational fatigue. As a result, nurses burn out and turn over and quality of care is impaired. The aim of this study was to investigate sleep disturbance (SD) and occupational fatigue (OF) in emergency nurses of public hospitals in Greece. This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in the ED of tertiary public hospitals in Greece from September 2019 to October 2021, after the approval from the scientific and ethical committee of hospitals and the full informed consent of participants. The Standard Shift work Index (SSI) questionnaire was used, which includes 12 question groups about sleep habits and OF evaluation for shift workers, as nurses. Two hundred and ten ED nurses were recruited for the purpose of the study. In this research their quality of life, sleep completeness, and fatigue levels were studied. A moderate level of SD (total score = 70.54) of nurses was found that was related to marital status, presence of children, and underlying diseases (p = 0.012, p = 0.024, and p = 0.002, respectively). OF was assessed at low levels (score = 27.34) and was mainly related to age, with younger nurses reporting less fatigue compared with older nurses. The effect of work shifts in SD and OF of ED nurses was well documented. ED nurses' OF was correlated with increased SD, age, and marital status. Further research is needed for a better assessment and understanding of the factors that influence SD and OF of ED nurses to plan a strategy to optimize sleep patterns of work shift ED nurses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patient participation is advocated in various healthcare settings. Instruments for assessment and feedback have been developed to strengthen clinician-patient interaction. In an emergency department context, such instruments are still missing. The study aimed to develop and test an observation tool for emergency teams' behaviour regarding patient involvement and collaboration. METHODS The development of the behavioural observation tool followed a systematic approach. The tool's content was based on various data sources, i.e., published literature, interview and observational data, and expert consensus. An international expert panel reviewed the content and the rating scale and rated its importance for patient involvement and collaboration in a Delphi process. The feasibility and reliability of the tool were tested by trained observers using video recordings of simulated emergencies. Intraclass correlation (ICC) and Kappa-statistics were performed to test the tool's inter-rater reliability. RESULTS The PIC-ET tool, a 22-item observation instrument was developed in which patient involvement and collaboration behaviours are rated from 'no' to 'high' using behavioural anchors. Expert agreement was obtained after three Delphi rounds on the tool content, the behavioural anchors and its importance for patient involvement and collaboration. The content validity was assessed as high, and the tool was found feasible for research. Overall inter-rater reliability was fair (Kappa 0.52). CONCLUSIONS A novel tool for assessing emergency teams' behaviour regarding patient involvement and collaboration is introduced. The tool's psychometric properties were fair to good. Further validation of the PIC-ET tool is recommended for more robust evidence. Future adaptation to different contexts and areas of use, as well as further validity testing may be of value.

Abstract
Emergency departments are often the first point of contact for individuals presenting to healthcare services for assistance and treatment for mental ill health. Emergency departments, particularly those in regional areas, can experience high staff turnover and rely on novice nurses for workforce sustainability. The aim of this paper is to explore the experiences of novice nurses (nurses with <3 years of experience) in providing care to individuals presenting with mental ill health in the emergency department. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with novice nurses (N = 13) in a regional emergency department, using qualitative description as the guiding framework. The following three main themes were identified: (i) confidence in providing quality and safe nursing care, (ii) perceived barriers to providing quality and safe nursing care, and (iii) factors that increase confidence. Our findings indicate that proving safe and appropriate nursing care is affected in novice nurses by factors that lead to a perceived lack of confidence, such as how individuals present to the emergency department (e.g. intoxicated or violent), an inability to conduct conversations to assess accurately and perceived shortfalls in the emergency department environment itself. Future research should examine the curriculum for relevance of undergraduate education regarding acute mental health presentations and develop training strategies that enhance communication with individuals who present to the emergency department with mental ill health.

Abstract
AIMS This study aims to investigate the association between stressors, coping strategies and intention to leave the nursing profession among nurses. BACKGROUND Job stressors and coping strategies are believed to affect turnover intention among nurses, but no large-scale study has been conducted on these associations in China yet. METHOD A cross-sectional secondary analysis was conducted among 51,406 nurses from 1858 hospitals. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were carried out, and odds ratios were reported. RESULTS Overall, 49.58% nurses had an intention to leave the profession. It is found that stress from health condition, family, occupational injuries, nurse-patient tension, high job demands, strict leaders and colleague relationships were significantly associated with higher intention to leave. Coping strategies such as talking to family and friends, talking to leaders, doing outdoor activities, engaging in hobbies and attending on-the-job training were significantly associated with lower intention, but social gathering, psychological counselling and suffering in silence had an opposite effect. CONCLUSIONS Our study provides new insights into the association between stressors, coping strategies and turnover intention among nurses in China. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT Evidence from this study indicates that policies promoting a safe and supportive work environment should be developed to help nurses cope with stress.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Emergency nurses experience occupational stressors resulting from exposures to critical clinical events. The purpose of this study was to identify the critical clinical events for emergency nurses serving 3 patient populations (general, adult, pediatric) and whether the resilience of these nurses differed by the patient population served. METHODS This study used a cross-sectional survey design. A total of 48 emergency nurses were recruited from 3 trauma hospital-based emergency departments (general, adult, pediatric). Clinical Events Questionnaire, Connor-Davidson Resilience scale, and an investigator-developed demographic questionnaire were used to collect data from respondents. RESULTS All respondents were female (n = 48, 100%), and most were White (n = 46, 96%). The average age of participants was 39.6 years, the average number of years as a registered nurse was 12.7 years, and the average number of years as an emergency nurse was 8.8 years. Clinical events considered most critical were providing care to a sexually abused child, experiencing the death of a coworker, and lack of responsiveness by a colleague during a serious situation. The least stress-provoking event was incidents with excessive media coverage. Nurses were less affected by the critical events they experienced more frequently at work. Nurses in the 3 trauma settings had high level of resilience, with no statistically significant differences between groups. DISCUSSION The occupational stress from exposure to significant clinical events varied with the patient population served by emergency nurses. It is important that interventions be adopted to alleviate the effect of work-related stressors and promote the psychological health of emergency nurses.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Emergency nurses work in one of the busiest and most stressful departments in a hospital and, as such, may experience burnout more often than nurses working in other nursing units. This study examined the relationship among orientation, burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and low sense of personal accomplishment), and intent to leave. METHODS A cross-sectional survey design was used. Emergency nurses who were members of the Emergency Nurses Association were invited to participate in an anonymous survey. The Maslach Burnout Inventory tool was used to explore emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and sense of personal accomplishment. Emergency nurses' intent to leave was assessed with the Turnover Intention Scale. A logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the odds of intent to leave for those who scored at or above versus below the median on each burnout subscale. RESULTS The findings revealed that a formal orientation enhanced emergency nurses' sense of personal accomplishment and was associated with lower intent to leave. The odds of intent to leave were almost 9 times greater for participants with 5 or more years of experience, approximately 13 times greater for those with above-median emotional exhaustion, and more than 6 times lower for those with above-median sense of personal accomplishment. DISCUSSION Emotional exhaustion and low sense of personal accomplishment were key factors influencing emergency nurses' intent to leave. Emergency nurse leaders may find that a formal orientation program enhances sense of personal accomplishment and decreases intent to leave. Creating work environments to help emergency nurses find joy in their work may be critical to work-life balance and staff retention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Secondary traumatic stress is common for emergency nurses working in trauma care, but it is unknown whether this secondary traumatic stress negatively correlates to work productivity. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between secondary traumatic stress and work productivity of emergency nurses who provide trauma patient care in the emergency department. METHODS This study used a cross-sectional survey design with a systematic random sample of emergency nurses. Respondents (N = 255) completed the Impact of Events Scale-Revised (IES-R) and the Healthcare Productivity Survey (HPS) on the basis of trauma patient care within the preceding 30 days. A 2-tailed Pearson correlation was calculated to explore the relationship between secondary traumatic stress and work productivity for emergency nurses providing trauma patient care. RESULTS Mean IES-R score was 19.1, and HPS score was 2.7. About 38% of respondents reported high secondary traumatic stress, and 29% reported decreased work productivity. Although overall correlation between IES-R and HPS was not significant, IES-R-Intrusion was significantly correlated with HPS-Cognitive Demands (p = .003) and HPS-Safety and Competency (p = .011), IES-R-Avoidance with HPS-Safety and Competency (p = .003), and IES-R-Hyperarousal with HPS-Cognitive Demands (p = .002) and HPS-Handle/Manage Workload (p = .015). CONCLUSIONS Secondary traumatic stress and decreased work productivity were significant problems for some emergency nurses. To address this problem, employers can provide stress reduction and management techniques to emergency nurses providing trauma patient care. In addition, emergency nurses need to be proactive in seeking social support and using stress mitigation and reduction programs.
