Abstract
Introduction As a cornerstone of overall wellbeing, mental health significantly influences job satisfaction, vital for employee retention and organizational success. Recognizing this, managers prioritize initiatives to enhance job satisfaction and promote a healthy, productive work environment. Aims The study aims to explore the connections between depression, anxiety, stress, and job satisfaction among nurses, providing insights to improve their wellbeing and retention in the profession. Methods This quantitative survey study was conducted from June to September 2024, involving 643 nurses from healthcare facilities in Klaipėda County. Data were collected using two validated instruments: the Depression, Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-42) and the Paul Spector Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS). Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics Version 29.0.1.0. Results The study found that while the average levels of depression, anxiety, and stress among nurses were within normal limits, a significant portion of participants exhibited compromised mental health. Nearly one-third of the nurses experienced stress and/or depression, and almost half reported anxiety. Over one-sixth of the participants experienced high or very high levels of anxiety, while severe depression or stress was less common. Factors such as years of experience, workload, and work schedule were identified as significant influences on nurses' psychoemotional state. Moderate to strong positive correlations were observed between depression, anxiety, and stress levels. Additionally, the nurses' mental health was statistically significantly and negatively associated with most components of job satisfaction. Conclusion Despite average levels of depression, anxiety, and stress being within normal limits, many nurses face significant mental health challenges, particularly anxiety. Factors like workload and work schedules strongly influence their wellbeing. The negative link between mental health and job satisfaction highlights the need for better support to improve nurses' wellbeing and job satisfaction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The National Academies, National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention (NAASP), and National Strategy for Suicide Prevention disseminated recommendations for improving the quality, scope, usefulness, timeliness, and accessibility of mortality data and are working to advance research in this area. Further, the NAASP issued recommendations for developing standard definitions, use of common data elements, and processes for connecting data elements with similar measures. The NAASP additionally reinforced the importance of linking data sources. PURPOSE Examine surveillance of nurse suicide in the United States. METHODS The literature was searched to identify studies that examined suicide among nurses using national data. DISCUSSION Across studies that examined nurse suicide using national data, there was variability in methods, nursing definitions and age criteria, and limited data on sex differences, race and ethnicity, and state details. There was also variability with respect to denominators used in suicide rate calculations. Cross-study comparison and synthesis is sometimes challenging given this variability. CONCLUSION To examine additional associations between risk/protective factors and nurse suicide, to monitor nurse suicide incidence and trends, and to evaluate the efficacy of interventions aimed at reducing nurse suicide, it is important to move toward a standard evaluative approach that considers both mortality data and research initiatives. Standardization and data linking recommendations from the NAASP are particularly relevant to studies that examine nurse suicide. Taken together, leadership and advocacy are needed in these areas, both within the nursing profession and more broadly across the United States.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to estimate the national incidence of nurse suicide. BACKGROUND Nurses are at a higher risk of suicide than nonnurses; however, data have been limited since 2018. METHODS This study used a retrospective cohort design using 2017-2021 National Violent Death Reporting System suicides. RESULTS Female nurses had higher suicide rates than female nonnurses in 2018 (incidence rate ratio, 1.21 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.05-1.39]), 2019 (1.41 [95% CI, 1.23-1.60]), 2020 (1.26 [95% CI, 1.08-1.45]), and 2021 (1.35 [95% CI, 1.17-1.55]), whereas male nurses were comparable with male nonnurses. Nurses had higher odds of mental health problems (adjusted odds ratio, 1.28 [95% CI, 1.13-1.46], P < .001), job problems (1.60 [95% CI, 1.33-1.92], P < .001), and use of poisoning (1.54 [95% CI, 1.37-1.74], P < .001). Nurses had higher odds of using opioids, cardiovascular/diabetic agents, and drugs not prescribed for home use. CONCLUSION Female nurses are at a higher risk of suicide than other females. Multimodal nurse suicide prevention strategies remain indicated.

Abstract
The aim of this review was to identify and integrate evidence on suicide mortality among U.S. nurses. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first review to focus exclusively on suicide among U.S. nurses. Electronic medical databases, reference lists, and supplementary files were searched to identify studies that examined suicide mortality among U.S. nurses. In total, n = 28 studies were included: n = 14 were cohort, n = 10 were epidemiological, and n = 4 utilized mixed methods. Many studies had unique aims, included different nurse groups and referent populations, and utilized a variety of statistical procedures. However, when taken together, four categories were assessed across these n = 28 cumulative studies: incidence of suicide, factors associated with suicide, circumstances preceding suicide, and methods of suicide among U.S. nurses. Taken together, continued surveillance of suicide incidence among U.S. nurses is important, as evidence largely suggests nurses experience elevated suicide incidence when compared to select referent groups. Additional research on factors associated with suicide and circumstances preceding suicide are also needed, particularly among male nurses. Finally, additional research regarding the leading method of suicide, leading substance implicated in self-poisoning, and sex-differentiated suicide methods are also important. Collectively, these data are needed to inform intervention and surveillance strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses commonly experience psychological trauma with high risk for a host of mental health concerns such as suicide, depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders, as well as high rates of burnout and moral injury. Despite rigorous academic preparation, baccalaureate nursing education curricula lack content on the widespread effects of trauma. METHOD Using a trauma informed care (TIC) model, an innovative course called Trauma Informed Care for Nursing Action (TIC4NA) was created. RESULTS This course allows students to safely explore the profession of nursing to transform their learning about trauma related to patient care, the nursing community, and society. CONCLUSION TIC curriculum delivery offers supportive strategies to mitigate negative outcomes during nursing school. This content could have positive effects on nurse and nursing student retention as well as mitigating a barrage of negative outcomes for individual nurses and the nursing profession. Abstract
Individuals with a satisfactory level of job satisfaction are much less likely to feel hopeless about their future and are more likely to perform efficiently in the workplace. General work stress (i.e., the work-related stress subjectively experienced) is a significant predictor of suicide cognitions. Furthermore, it has been posited that satisfaction and hope are fundamental to life from an existential perspective. We, therefore, tested a hypothetical model of general work stress, suicide cognitions, hopelessness, and job satisfaction. The data were collected from 416 health-care workers through a convenience sampling method. The mediation analysis results revealed significant negative and positive relationships among general work stress, suicide conceptions, hopelessness, and job satisfaction. The findings indicate that hopelessness and job satisfaction have a parallel mediating effect in the relationship between general work stress and suicide cognitions. The result of the study is of great importance, which suggests that interventions to alleviate hopelessness and work stress and to boost the job satisfaction of medical staff may help prevent suicide cognitions.

Abstract
Substance use disorder in health care professionals may adversely affect patient care. To reduce the risks of harm, raising awareness among all staff for early identification and response is a primary goal. Knowledgeable co-workers play an essential role to identify signs and behaviors indicating at-risk substance use by observed impairment or suspicion of drug diversion and report to a supervisor. Response protocol for a timely, confidential, safe and non-punitive intervention can help connect the clinician to needed assessment and treatment help and potentially save a life and provide a hopeful outcome to retain their license and career.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few qualitative studies have focused on suicide and specific job-related problems associated with suicide in pharmacists. Greater knowledge of specific work-related stressors amongst pharmacists could inform suicide prevention strategies. OBJECTIVE To identify job-related stressors associated with pharmacist suicides and compare stressors to those previously reported in physicians and nurses. METHODS Free-text law enforcement and medical examiner data for pharmacist suicides were extracted from the National Violent Death Registry (NVDRS) for 2003-2019. Reflexive thematic analysis was deployed via a deductive approach utilizing codes and themes found in previous research on nurse and physician suicides. New codes were also identified through inductive coding. RESULTS A total of 291,872 suicides occurred between 2003 and 2019, of which 392 were pharmacist deaths. Of these, 62 pharmacist suicides were coded with job-related problems. Almost all deductive themes/codes extracted from nurses and physicians were present in pharmacists. Common codes found in the pharmacist dataset that were also found previously in physicians and nurses were: history of mental health, substance use disorder, hopelessness impending or proceeding job loss, and access to lethal weapons and/or drugs. Novel codes were added through inductive content analysis. Codes novel to pharmacists were: verbalized suicidal ideation (SI) or intent, diversion for the purpose of suicide, and the fear of job loss. Disciplinary action at the institutional level was associated with the fear of job loss and cited as the event triggering suicide completion. CONCLUSION Pharmacists have similar job-related stressors associated with suicide as physicians and nurses. Evaluating the process of disciplinary action is warranted. Future research is indicated to evaluate causal relationship between work-related stressors and mental health outcomes leading to suicide in pharmacists.

Abstract
Rates of nurse mental health and substance use disorders are high. Heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses are challenged to care for patients in ways that often jeopardize their own health and increase risks for their families. These trends exacerbate the epidemic of suicide in nursing underscored by several professional organization clarion calls to nurses' risk. Principles of health equity and trauma-informed care dictate urgent action. The purpose of this paper is to establish consensus among clinical and policy leaders from Expert Panels of the American Academy of Nursing about actions to address risks to mental health and factors contributing to nurse suicide. Recommendations for mitigating barriers drew from the CDC's 2022 Suicide Prevention Resource for Action strategies to guide the nursing community to inform policy, education, research, and clinical practice with the goals of greater health promotion, risk reduction, and sustainment of nurses' health and well-being are provided.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses have been identified as an occupational group at increased risk of suicide. This systematic review examines the prevalence of, and factors influencing, suicide and related behaviours among nurses and midwives (PROSPERO pre-registration CRD42021270297). METHODS MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and CINAHL were searched. Articles published from 1996 onwards exploring suicidal thoughts and behaviours among nurses and midwives were included. Quality of included studies was assessed. Articles were subjected to narrative synthesis informed by suicide data examined, study design, and quality. PRISMA guidelines were followed. RESULTS A total of 100 studies were eligible for inclusion in the review. Articles examining suicide exclusively among midwives were absent from the literature. Several studies confirmed that nursing professionals, especially female, are at increased risk of suicide, particularly by self-poisoning. Factors contributing to risk include psychiatric disorders, alcohol and substance misuse, physical health problems, and occupational and interpersonal difficulties. In studies of non-fatal suicidal behaviours, including during the COVID-19 pandemic, psychiatric, psychological, physical and occupational factors were contributory. There has been little investigation of interventions for prevention of suicide in nurses. LIMITATIONS Only articles published in English language were reviewed. CONCLUSIONS The findings highlight the risk of suicide in nurses. They also show a combination of factors contribute to suicide and non-fatal suicidal behaviour in nurses, with psychiatric, psychological, physical health, occupational and substance misuse (especially alcohol) problems being particularly important. The limited evidence regarding prevention measures indicates a major need to develop primary and secondary interventions for this at-risk occupational group, for example, education regarding enhancing wellbeing and safe alcohol use, alongside accessible psychological support.

Abstract
There is growing evidence that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a severe impact on the nursing profession worldwide. Occupational strain has disrupted nurses' emotional wellbeing and may have led to negative coping behaviors, such as increased substance use, which could impair cognitive functioning. The aim of this study was to examine whether increased substance use in a sample of U.S. nurses during the pandemic was related to greater workplace cognitive failure. An online questionnaire was administered in May 2020 to Michigan nurses statewide via three nursing organizations (n = 695 respondents). A path model was used to test the direct effects of reported increased substance use on workplace cognitive failure and via parallel psychological mediators. The model had excellent fit to the observed data, with statistically significant, unique mediating effects of greater symptoms of anxiety (b = 0.236, z = 2.22, p = 0.027), posttraumatic stress disorder (b = 0.507, z = 4.62, p < 0.001) and secondary trauma (b = 1.10, z = 2.82, p = 0.005). Importantly, the direct effect of increased substance use on workplace cognitive failure was not statistically significant independent of the mediators (b = 0.133, z = 0.56, p = 0.576; 95% confidence interval: -0.33, 0.60). These results point to the importance of further delineating the mechanistic pathways linking adverse stress to workplace cognitive failure. As we emerge from the pandemic, healthcare systems should focus resources on supporting cognitive health by addressing the psychological and emotional welfare of nurses, many of whom may be struggling with residual trauma and increased substance use.

Abstract
Background Understanding alcohol use among nurses may inform interventions related to the coping mechanisms nurses use for workplace stress and trauma. Alcohol use can be caused by a variety of factors and has serious implications on a nurse's personal health and professional practice. Understanding psychosocial factors and preventive measures may assist in the development of interventions to improve coping mechanisms and reduce the incidence of alcohol misuse. Purpose To review the psychosocial factors and preventive measures associated with alcohol use among nurses. Methods For this integrative review, systematic searches were conducted in CINAHL, PubMed, PsychNet, and ProQuest Central. Included studies were peer-reviewed and addressed alcohol use among nurses in the United States. Articles were appraised using methods-specific tools indicated by the Whittemore and Knafl framework. Data were extracted and themes identified using constant comparison. Results Of 6,214 nonduplicate articles screened, 78 were selected for full-text review and 13 were included after application of inclusion criteria. Synthesis resulted in four themes: (1) occupational stress and trauma, (2) workplace characteristics, (3) mental health implications, and (4) protective factors. The data show that workplace stress and trauma contribute to alcohol use among nurses. Night shifts, rotating shifts, and shift length are factors related to alcohol use, as are mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and suicide. Protective factors that reduce alcohol use among nurses include faith, resilience, and perceived organizational support. Conclusion Alcohol use among nurses presents challenges for the nursing profession and regulatory bodies with specific and interrelated phenomena related to the role and identity of nurses. A better understanding of these factors through research will facilitate a healthier nursing workforce that is better prepared to take on the rewards and challenges of a nursing career.

Abstract
Nurses die by suicide at a higher rate than the general population. Previous studies have observed mental health problems, including substance use, as a prominent antecedent before death. The purpose of this study was to explore the characteristics of nurses who died by suicide documented in the death investigation narratives from the National Violent Death Reporting System from 2003 to 2017 using thematic analysis and natural language processing. One thousand three hundred and fifty-eight subjects met these inclusion criteria. Narratives from 601 subjects were thematically analyzed and 2544 individual narratives were analyzed using natural language processing. The analyses revealed five themes: "mental health treatment," "poor general health and chronic pain," "substance use," "worsening mental health after bereavement," and "repeating a family member's suicide." Mental health/substance use, chronic illness, and chronic pain were seen to coexist in a complex, interdependent manner that appeared to be entangled in the nurses' narratives before death. These findings echo the need for reducing the stigmatization of mental health problems in nursing and removing barriers to help-seeking behaviors as early preventative interventions. Future research is needed to determine if a comprehensive healthcare integration approach to address these entangled problems would reduce suicide vulnerability in nurses and improve their quality of life.

Abstract
Nurses are known to be at an increased risk of death by suicide, and recent studies have found links between nurse suicide, substance use, mental health issues, and job problems. Because of stigma, inaccessibility of resources, and regulatory and legal issues, nurses are unlikely to seek help unless a crisis forces them into treatment. The purpose of this article is to review the current understanding of nurse suicide, the psychological impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the strategic planning approach to identify the needs of nurses, and promising interventions and practices. Evidence-based strategies to intervene at the personal, institutional, and regulatory levels should be employed to reduce nurse suicide by focusing not only on suicide but also on treatment of substance and mental health issues, as well as a renewed focus on disciplinary procedures that may place nurses in immediate danger of death by suicide. Nurse leaders have a moral obligation to provide proactive, meaningful interventions to reduce the risk of death by suicide among nurses.

Abstract
Recently, nurse suicide has emerged as one of the major issues. We tried to review the status of nurse suicide and its management in Korea through inspecting related web sites, news articles, and research. However, there were no sufficient reports or statistics along with the research throughout the country. Moreover, there were no organized nurse suicide management systems or programs including suicide prevention, suicide intervention, suicide postvention management. In other countries, there were various trials and successful experiences about nurse suicide programs, and those have been managed in organized and integrated ways. It gave us a lot of implications. To effectively prevent and manage the nurse suicide in Korea, nursing workforce, nursing managers, and nursing researchers should be concerned about nurse suicide. Furthermore, discussions and the research must be made actively. Based on such efforts, appropriate programs, organized manage systems, and policies must be devised at institution and national level.
