Abstract
BACKGROUND Temporomandibular joint diseases (TMD) are an important clinical condition in childhood as in adults. There is variation in the frequency and distribution of complaints in children about this disorder. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study was conducted on 407 children aged 5-18 years. Patients with dentofacial function problems, trauma, history of surgery, and malignancy were excluded from the study. Patients with temporomandibular magnetic resonance imaging in their records were classified as normal, reduction disc displacement and non-reduction disc displacement. RESULTS Patients symptoms were click (77.2%), pain (71.5%), headache (61.2%), bruxism (31.9%), locking (28%), difficulty in mouth opening (24.3%). The most common clinical findings are normal mouth opening (62.2%) and deviation (44.9%). When the MR results were examined, 55.1% of female and 66.6% of male were observed to be normal, and this statistically shows that males have more normal MR findings. CONCLUSION TMD are also observed in children. Clinical history and findings are helpful in diagnosis, but the contribution of imaging methods may be limited. If head and neck pain is detected in children, TMD should be kept in mind.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate whether the sex steroid precursor hormone dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEA-S), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and testosterone (TT) are associated with temporomandibular (TM) pain on palpation in male adolescents. METHODS Out of the LIFE Child study dataset containing 1022 children and adolescents aged 10-18 years (496 males, 48.5%), we used a subsample of 273 male adolescents (mean age: 13.8 ± 2.3 years) in advanced pubertal development (PD) to analyse the association between hormones and TM pain. The Tanner scale was applied to describe the stage of PD. Pain on palpation of the temporalis and masseter muscles and the TM joints (palpation pain) was assessed using the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD). Serum levels of sex hormones (DHEA-S, SHBG and TT) were determined using standardised laboratory analyses. Free TT was estimated from the ratio between TT and SHBG (free androgen index[FAI]). We calculated the risk of perceived positive palpation pain for male participants as a function of hormone levels (DHEA-S, FAI) taking into account age and body mass index (BMI). RESULTS Among more developed (Tanner stage 4-5) male adolescents, 22.7% (n = 62) reported palpation pain in the TM region. In these participants, FAI levels were approximately half that of individuals without such pain (p < .01). DHEA-S levels were about 30% lower in the pain group (p < .01). In multivariable regression analyses, the odds ratio (OR) for pain on palpation decreased to 0.75 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.57-0.98) per 10 units of FAI level compared to those without pain, after controlling for the effects of age and adjusted BMI. We observed the same effect for this subgroup per unit of DHEA-S serum level (OR = 0.71; 95% CI: 0.53-0.94). CONCLUSION At subclinical lower levels of serum free TT and DHEA-S, male adolescents are more likely to report pain on standardised palpation of the masticatory muscles and/or TM joints. This finding supports the hypothesis that sex hormones may influence pain reporting.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are generally observed in individuals between the ages of 20 and 40 years. TMD have also been described in children and adolescents but are still not widely detected and treated in routine practice. Through a literature review, this work aims to improve the diagnosis and management of TMD in children and adolescents by dentists. METHODS This literature review was performed by a computerized search of the database PubMed for published articles on TMD in children and adolescents. Articles evaluating the prevalence, etiologies and risk factors, diagnosis, signs, and symptoms as well as the comorbidities of TMD, published between 2001 and 2022, were included in this review. RESULTS A total of 51 articles were included. Most of studies reported a prevalence of over 20%, with a higher prevalence in females. The two most common diagnoses were myofascial pain and disk displacement with reduction. Headaches were often associated with the condition. The management of TMD in children and adolescents has been poorly studied. CONCLUSION TMD frequently affect children and adolescents. Therefore, for prevention purposes, an examination of the masticatory system should be included in the dental check-up. Early diagnosis is essential in order to limit effects on their growth, development, and quality of life. TMD management is not currently validated for children and adolescents. Noninvasive and reversible care should be preferred.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) in children and adolescents is not well-known. This is partly because TMD is not often diagnosed in children and partly because there is no agreed-upon definition of TMD. There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that there are gender differences in the prevalence and presentation of TMD in adult. The aim was to assess the prevalence of TMDs in subjects aged 8-19 evaluated with Diagnostic Criteria for TMDs (DC/TMD) and to assess gender differences. METHODS PubMed, Web of Science and Lilacs were systematically searched until 30 November 2022, to identify studies presenting children and adolescents patients affected by TMDs. RESULTS Out of 40 papers, three studies were included. The included subjects in this review were 1914 (1093 female and 821 male). Seven hundred and thirty-six on 1914 patients (38.4%) presented TMD. Among 1093 female, 489 (44.7%) presented TMD, while 247/821 male (30%) experienced TMD. Meta-analysis revealed that the female had a higher TMD prevalence than male (RR 2.10; 95% CI: 1.21-3.65). CONCLUSION TMD prevalence in children and adolescence varies between 20% and 60%. Female had a higher prevalence of TMDs compared to male.

Abstract
This study investigated the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) in a sample of children and adolescents and evaluated the correlation with occlusal variables. TMD signs and symptoms were recorded in 411 subjects (age range 7-15 years), divided into two groups: 214 subjects treated in Chieti (Italy) CG group and 197 in Murcia (Spain) MG group. Once the Angle dental class was identified, it was recorded if there were signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and occlusal interferences. The percentages of signs and symptoms were compared to determine the differences among the groups for TMDs, bruxism, joint sounds, deviation during the opening, reduced opening/lateral/protrusive movements, malocclusions, and myofascial pain. There is no statistically significant difference between the two groups (χ2 = 1.057, p > 0.05). Subjects with Angle Class I (37.37%), deep bite (43.43%), and increased overjet (41.41%) showed a higher prevalence of TMD symptoms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This umbrella review (UR) explored the possible associations between temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and otologic signs/symptoms (OSs) and established the potential impact of TMD interventions on OSs. METHODS A systematic review of systematic reviews (SRs)/meta-analyses (MAs) was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines and Joanna Briggs Institute UR protocol. Electronic search of the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Open Grey databases was conducted and the quality of the identified studies was assessed using the AMSTAR2 criteria. RESULTS Out of 923 and 157 articles screened for the first and second focus questions respectively, a total of 8 SRs/MAs fulfilled the eligibility criteria. The prevalence of OSs in TMD patients and contrariwise varied substantially up to 85.0-95.0%. Available evidence indicates that TMDs are associated with OSs, and TMD treatment reduced OSs. CONCLUSION Findings suggest that a comorbid relationship between TMDs and OSs exists, and therapeutic TMD interventions improve OSs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are multifactorial, and high levels of stress seem to increase symptoms. The association with exposure to violence has not been explored in adolescent populations. OBJECTIVE To examine the association of self-reported symptoms of temporomandibular pain and jaw dysfunction with child physical abuse, intimate partner violence, forced sexual intercourse, and bullying victimisation. METHODS An epidemiological, cross-sectional, school-based study was conducted in Olinda, northeast Brazil. The sample comprised 2,431 adolescents aged 14-19 years. TMD-related symptoms and exposure to violence were assessed with questions from the 3Q/TMD screener and queries on exposure to different forms of violence. Multilevel logistic regressions were conducted to evaluate how 3Q screen-positive responses are associated with self-reported exposure to violence. RESULTS Self-reported TMD-related symptoms had a prevalence of 40.5%. Significantly more females than males screened positive to all 3Q/TMD questions (p < .001). Adolescents experiencing intimate partner violence (p = .012) and bullying (p < .001) had significantly higher odds of 3Q positive responses than those who reported no exposure to violence. Significant associations of TMD-related symptoms with forced sexual intercourse (p = .014) and with bullying (p = .007) were observed. CONCLUSION Adolescents with self-reported symptoms of temporomandibular pain and jaw dysfunction were significantly more often exposed to some type of violence. The number of adolescents reporting TMD-related symptoms increased in a dose-response manner with the number of violence forms the individual had experienced.

Abstract
Background Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are related to psychological factors. Adolescence is one of the stages in life with more psychosocial vulnerability, which is dissimilar in rural and urban zones. Thus, the aim of this investigation was to evaluate the association between psychological factors (symptoms of anxiety, depression and somatization) and TMD in adolescents between 12 and 15 years, belonging to urban and rural zones of Colombia. Methods 180 subjects aged 12–15 years (mean 13.8, SD 1.2), enrolled in public schools in the rural (n = 90) and urban (n = 90) zones were included. All subjects were evaluated using the DC/TMD instrument; the Axis I was applied for the clinical examination and the Axis II for the psychological evaluation. Data were analyzed by means of T-student, Mann–Whitney, Kruskall–Wallis tests, Pearson Chi square and multiple-variable analysis with logistic regression. Results Forty percent of the included subjects presented some type of TMD. TMD related to pain were the most common (25.5% of the studied adolescents), being myalgia the most common (20% of the adolescents in urban zone and 31.1% of the adolescents in the rural zone). There was no difference between the TMD present in males and females, but there were differences in the symptoms of Anxiety, and Somatization (p < 0.05). TMD and psychological factors were more prevalent in children with 13 years of age. A statistically significant association between TMD and symptoms of Anxiety (Pearson Chi squared 25.57, p = 0.04), depression (Pearson Chi squared 33.28, p = 0.03) and somatization (Pearson Chi squared 25.79, p = 0.04) was found in subjects from rural zones. No associations between psychological aspects and TMD were found in subjects from urban zones, but overall all psychological factors significantly influenced TMD. Conclusion This study indicates Myalgia to be the most prevalent TMD in studied Colombian adolescents. Pain-related TMDs are associated with psychological factors in the adolescent population of rural Colombia. Symptoms of anxiety, depression and somatization were found to be associated to TMD, even when the frequency was not necessarily severe.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Objective of this study was to determine whether the diagnostic accuracy of the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) is sufficient for use among schoolchildren aged 8-12 years. METHODS This prospective cohort study on diagnostic accuracy with calibrated examiners was conducted among 533 children of both sexes aged 8-12 years, with and without TMD symptoms, selected randomly from the Rhein-Neckar district. Self-reporting of non-dental facial pain was used as the reference standard, against which we calculated the following for the pain-related items of the DC/TMD (index test): sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative likelihood ratios, diagnostic odds ratio, accuracy and 95% Wilson Score confidence intervals. We also calculated the area under the receiver-operating characteristic (AUROC) curve displaying sensitivity and specificity. RESULTS Our final sample consisted of 282 children, half of whom reported having facial pain and 3.2% reported sounds from the temporomandibular joints (TMJs). Despite high specificity (90.78%; 95% confidence interval (CI): [84.86%; 94.53%]), sensitivity of the adapted DC/TMD for pain on maximum jaw opening was poor (37.59%; 95% CI: [30.02%; 45.81%]). For pain on palpation, more similar values were recorded for sensitivity (74.47%; 95% CI: [66.69%; 80.95%]) and specificity (70.21%; 95% CI: [62.21%; 77.14%]). The diagnostic odds ratio was >1 for both examinations. The AUROC for pain on opening was 68.39% (95% CI: [62.62%; 74.16%]), and for pain on palpation, it was 74.63% (95% CI: [69.45%; 79.81%]), whereas the combination of both resulted to an AUROC of 74.09% (95% CI: [68.96%; 79.21%]). It was not possible to measure the diagnostic accuracy of the DC/TMD regarding TMJ sounds or jaw-opening limitations, as they occurred too rarely in our sample. CONCLUSION In this study, the diagnostic accuracy of the DC/TMD for TMD-related pain in children was lower than that recorded for adults in previous studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to develop/evaluate the psychometric properties of the Arabic Fonseca Anamnestic Index (FAI-A) and estimate the prevalence of TMDs in prospective orthodontic patients. METHODS The FAI-A was derived by forward-backward translation/cross-cultural adaption of the English FAI. Psychometric assessment of the FAI-A was performed with 308 orthodontic patients. Reliability was established via internal consistency and test-retest techniques, whereas, validity was verified by construct and convergent validity. RESULTS Cronbach's alpha value for the FAI-A was 0.77, and the intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.99. For construct validity, the distribution of eigenvalues indicated that three items (mouth opening difficulty, jaw movement difficulty, and jaw fatigue) accounted for 60.5% of the total variance observed. For convergent validity, the FAI-A items were significantly correlated to the global question. CONCLUSION The FAI-A showed good reliability/validity and may be useful for screening TMDs. About 17% of prospective orthodontic patients presented with moderate-to-severe TMD symptoms.

Abstract
Background This community-based study investigated the functional, physical and psychosocial impact of Temporomandibular Disorders (TMDs) in adolescents and young adults. It also determined the discriminative capacity of a TMDs-specific oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) instrument and compared three formats of appraising OHRQoL data.
Material and Methods Subjects were recruited from a local Polytechnic. The presence of TMDs was established with the Fonseca Anamnestic Index (FAI), whilst TMDs-specific OHRQoL was evaluated with the Oral Health Impact Profile–TMDs (OHIP-TMDs). Demographic information, FAI and OHIP-TMDs responses were gathered with an on-line questionnaire. Data was analysed using Mann-Whitney U-test, chi-square test and Spearman’s rho correlation with significance level set at 0.05.
Results Data from a total of 244 participants were compiled and examined. The “no TMDs” (NT) group consisted of 140 subjects (119 females; 21 males) with a mean age of 20.41±3.29 years, while the “with TMDs” (WT) group composed of 104 subjects (88 females; 16 males) aged 19.82±3.04 years. Significant differences in median severity scores were observed between subjects with and without TMDs for all OHIP-TMDs domains and total OHIP (p values < 0.001). For appraisal of extent and prevalence, significant differences were again observed (p values < 0.05) with the exception of the functional limitation and handicap domains.
Conclusions TMDs impacted physical and psychosocial well-being of adolescents and young adults. OHIP-TMDs, preferably appraised by severity, extent and prevalence, was able to discriminate between subjects with and without TMDs. It holds promise as a TMDs-specific OHRQoL instrument for epidemiological studies. Key words:Temporomandibular Disorders, Oral health, Quality of life, Biopsychosocial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prevalence values for symptoms and signs of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in adolescents vary within the literature due to differences in set-ups of examination protocols. OBJECTIVES The objective was to present prevalence values for symptoms and signs of TMD in German adolescents that were observed within a standardised examination. Prevalence values comparing gender or pubertal status should be investigated. METHODS A cross-sectional sample of the LIFE Child Study aged 10 to 18 was examined. A questionnaire gathering anamnestic symptoms of TMD was completed, and an examination according to the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) was performed by trained dentists. Pubertal status according to Tanner stages was documented. Descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were performed. RESULTS A total of 1.116 participants (mean age 12.9 years, 51.4% female) were consecutively recruited. Most prevalent anamnestic symptoms were headaches (55.7%) and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) sounds (17.6%). The major clinical sign was TMJ sounds (31.9%). Both the examination of muscles or TMJs showed that pain to palpation was statistically significantly higher than familiar pain (P < .001). Gender comparisons revealed higher prevalence values and an increase in TMD symptoms and signs during pubertal development in females. CONCLUSION The prevalence of self-reported headaches, as well as anamnestic and clinical TMJ sounds, was high in German adolescents. Prevalence values for pain to palpation and familiar pain obtained relevant differences. Considering the DC/TMD, females are more affected by TMD signs and symptoms that increase during pubertal development, than male adolescents.

Abstract
The objective of this systematic review was (a) to establish the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) in patients seeking orthodontic treatment and (b) to determine the association between the presence of TMD and sex, age and malocclusion. A systematic literature search was performed according to PRISMA guidelines from 1969 to 2019 using the PubMed and LIVIVO databases. Eight study articles met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. An additional three contributions were identified through manual searching of the reference lists of retrieved articles. The methodological quality of the 11 articles was assessed with the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for prevalence studies. TMD prevalence ranged from 21.1% to 73.3%. The frequency of painful TMD signs/symptoms varied from 3.4% to 65.7%, while non-painful signs/symptoms ranged from 3.1% to 40.8%. The percentage of males and females presenting with TMD varied from 10.6% to 68.1% and 21.2 to 72.4%, respectively. In all studies, TMD prevalence was higher among females. The majority of articles reported more TMD signs/symptoms in individuals older than 18 years as compared to younger ones (≤18 years). While in four studies no association between TMD and malocclusion was found, another three investigations indicated that TMD may be related to certain occlusal traits. The TMD prevalence in patients seeking orthodontic treatment was high, with many individuals presenting painful TMD signs/symptoms. Female and older patients appear to have a greater occurrence of TMD. Although no strong association between TMD and malocclusion was established, several occlusal traits were implicated.
