Effect of thermal cycling on the flexure strength of CAD-CAM denture base materials: An in vitro study

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The impact of thermal cycling on the flexure strength of contemporary denture base materials remains inadequately understood despite its crucial role in determining the long-term performance of complete dentures.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the flexural strength of different CAD-CAM denture base materials and the effects of thermal cycling.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A total of 120 rectangular specimens were fabricated from 6 denture base materials according to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 20795-1:2013 standard: a heat-compressed PMMA ([Lucitone 199 [C-L199]), 2 brands of milled material (Ivotion Base [M-IB] and Lucitone Digital Fit [M-LDF]), and 3 types of 3- dimensionally (3D) printed material (Lucitone Digital Print [P-LDP], Flexcera Base [P-FB], and FotoDent Dentures [P-FD]). Specimens were divided into 2 subgroups of 10; half underwent thermocycling, half did not. Thermally cycled specimens were immersed in distilled water at 37 °C for 2 days, followed by 5000 thermal cycles at 5 and 55 ºC, with a dwell time of 30 seconds. They were then subjected to a 3-point flexural strength test. Two-way ANOVA, followed by post hoc Tukey multiple comparison tests were used to assess the effect of material type and the thermal cycling process on the flexural strength of denture base materials (α=.05).

RESULTS

All materials met the ISO standard of 65 MPa flexural strength, except for thermal cycled P-FB. A significant difference (P<.05) in flexure strength value was found among various denture base materials without thermal cycling (M-LDF>M-IB≈P-FD≈P-LDP>C-L199≈ P-FB) and with thermal cycling (M-LDF> M-IB≈P-FD>P-LDP≈C-L199>P-FB). The flexural strength of tested materials was reduced significantly (P<.05) with thermal cycling.

CONCLUSIONS

Three-dimensionally printed denture base materials have a flexural strength value similar to or less than that of milled denture base materials. Thermal cycling impacts the flexural strength of denture base materials.

Trueness and fit of complete-arch implant-supported frameworks in new-generation additively and subtractively manufactured polymers: An in-vitro study

BACKGROUND

There is limited knowledge on the fabrication trueness and fit of additively or subtractively manufactured complete-arch implant-supported frameworks in recently introduced polymers.

PURPOSE

To evaluate the trueness and marginal fit of additively or subtractively manufactured polymer-based complete-arch implant-supported frameworks, comparing with those of strength gradient zirconia frameworks.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A typodont model with 4 implants (left first molar (abutment 1), left canine (abutment 2), right canine (abutment 3), and right first molar (abutment 4)) was digitized (ATOS Core 80 5MP) and an implant-supported complete-arch framework was designed. This design file was used to fabricate frameworks from 5 different materials: strength gradient zirconia (SM-ZR), high impact polymer composite (SM-CR), nanographene-reinforced PMMA (SM-GR), PMMA (SM-PM), and additively manufactured temporary resin (AM) (n = 10). These frameworks were digitized and each scan file was virtually segmented into 4 regions (abutments, occlusal, overall without occlusal, and overall). The surface deviations at these regions, and linear and interimplant distance deviations were evaluated (Geomagic Control X). Marginal gaps were evaluated according to triple-scan protocol after seating frameworks on the model with the 1-screw test. Data were statistically analyzed (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

Surface deviations of all regions differed among tested materials (p ≤ 0.001). AM frameworks mostly had surface deviations that were similar to or lower than those of other materials (p ≤ 0.031), except for the occlusal surface, where it mostly had higher deviations (p ≤ 0.013). Abutment 4 of SM-CR had higher linear deviations than abutment 2 (p = 0.025), and material type did not affect the linear deviations within abutments (p ≥ 0.171). Interimplant distance deviations differed within and among materials (p ≤ 0.017), except for those between abutments 1 and 2 among materials (p = 0.387). Marginal gaps of subtractively manufactured materials differed among abutments, while those of abutments 3 and 4 differed among materials (p ≤ 0.003). AM frameworks mostly had lower marginal gaps at abutments 3 and 4 (p ≤ 0.048).

CONCLUSIONS

Although there was no clear trend among tested materials for measured deviations, marginal gaps of additively manufactured resin were mostly lower than those of subtractively manufactured materials and did not differ among abutment sites. Nevertheless, the differences in measured deviations among materials were small and marginal gaps were within the previously reported acceptability thresholds.

Effect of Different Surface Treatments as Methods of Improving the Mechanical Properties after Repairs of PMMA for Dentures

Denture fractures are a common problem in dental practice, and their repair is considered a first option to restore their functional properties. However, the inter-material resistance may become compromised. Typically, the bond between these materials weakens. Therefore, various surface treatment methods may be considered to enhance their mechanical properties. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) heat-polymerized resin (HPR) was used as the repaired material, cold-polymerized material (CPR) for the repairs, and different variants of alumina abrasive blasting (AB), methyl methacrylate (M), ethyl acetate (EA), methylene chloride (CH), and isopropyl alcohol (IA) treatments were applied. Finally, combined surface treatments were chosen and analyzed. Surface morphologies after treatments were observed by scanning electron microscopy and the flexural, shear, and impact strengths were tested. AB and chemical treatment with CH, M, and EA was used to improve all mechanical properties, and further improvement of the properties could be achieved by combining both types of treatments. Varied changes in surface morphologies were observed. Treatment with IA yielded less favorable results due to the low impact strength. The best results were achieved for the combination of AB and CH, but during the application of CH it was necessary to strictly control the exposure time.

Targeting bonding protocols to increase the bond between acrylic resin or 3D printed denture bases and prefabricated or 3D printed denture teeth

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The difference in chemical composition between denture base resin and denture teeth requires the development of bonding protocols that increase the union between the materials.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the impact of different bonding protocols on the bond between heat-polymerized and 3-dimensionally (3D) printed acrylic resin denture bases and acrylic resin prefabricated and 3D printed artificial teeth.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Four types of artificial teeth were evaluated: prefabricated acrylic resin (VITA MFT) and 3D printed (Cosmos TEMP, PRIZMA 3D Bio Denture, and PrintaX AA Temp) bonded to 20×24-mm cylinders of heat-polymerized (VipiWave) and 3D printed (Cosmos Denture, PRIZMA 3D Bio Denture, and PrintaX BB Base) denture bases. Three bonding protocols were tested (n=20): mechanical retention with perforation + monomer (PT1), mechanical retention with perforation + airborne-particle abrasion with 50-µm aluminum oxide + monomer (PT2), and mechanical retention with perforation + Palabond (PT3). Half of the specimens in each group received 10 000 thermocycles and were then subjected to the bonding test at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/minute. The failure type was analyzed and scanning electron micrographs made. Additionally, surface roughness (Ra) and wettability (degree) were analyzed (n=15). ANOVA was used to evaluate the effect of the bonding protocol, and the Student t test was applied to compare the experimental groups with the control (α=.05). For type of failure, a descriptive analysis was carried out using absolute and relative frequency. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to evaluate the surface changes (α=.05).

RESULTS

Among the protocols, PT3 with in Yller and PT2 with Prizma had the highest bond strengths of the heat-polymerized denture base and 3D printed teeth (P<.05). When comparing the experimental groups with the control, PT3 and PT2 had greater union with the 3D printed denture base + 3D printed teeth (in Yller), with no difference from the heat-polymerized denture base + prefabricated teeth in acrylic resin. The treatment of the 3D printed tooth surfaces affected the surface roughness of Prizma (P<.001) and wettability (P<.001).

CONCLUSIONS

To increase the bond between Yller 3D printed denture base + 3D printed teeth, a bonding protocol including mechanical retention with perforation + Palabond or mechanical retention with perforation + airborne-particle abrasion with aluminum oxide + monomer is indicated. For the other materials tested, further bonding protocols need to be investigated.

Effect of Postrinsing Times and Methods on Surface Roughness, Hardness, and Polymerization of 3D-Printed Photopolymer Resin

OBJECTIVES

 This in vitro study investigated the effects of different postrinsing times and methods on the surface roughness, surface hardness, and degree of polymerization of materials manufactured via stereolithography (SLA).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

 A total of 288 disk-shaped specimens were manufactured using an SLA three-dimensional (3D) printer. The specimens were randomly divided into nine groups (n = 32) based on rinsing times and methods. The groups were categorized into three rinsing methods: automated, ultrasonic, and hand washing, with rinsing times of 5, 10, and 15 minutes using a 99% isopropanol alcohol as a solvent. Linear roughness (Ra) and area roughness (Sa) were measured using a 3D confocal laser microscopy; the roughness morphology was evaluated by using scanning electron microscopy. Vickers hardness (VHN) tests were performed using a Vickers microhardness tester. Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry was used to determine the degree of conversion of treated specimens.

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS

 Data were statistically analyzed using two-way analysis of variance. The post hoc Tukey tests were conducted to compare the differences between groups (p < 0.05).

RESULTS

 The choice of the rinsing time and method affected the surface properties of the SLA photopolymer resin. The 15 minutes of ultrasonic method exhibited the highest Ra scores (0.86 ± 0.1 µm), while the 15 minutes of automated method presented the highest Sa scores (1.77 ± 0.35 µm). For the VHN test, the 15 minutes of ultrasonic method displayed the highest VHN score (18.26 ± 1.03 kgf/mm2). For the degree of polymerization, the 15 minutes of automated method was initially identified as the most effective (87.22 ± 6.80).

CONCLUSION

 To facilitate the overall surface roughness, surface hardness, and degree of polymerization, the optimal choice of postprocessing rinsing time and method for achieving a clear photopolymer resin was determined to be the ultrasonic method with a rinsing time of 15 minutes.

Fatigue behavior of implant-supported cantilevered prostheses in recently introduced CAD-CAM polymers: An in vitro study

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Cantilevered complete arch implant-supported prostheses are commonly fabricated from zirconia and more recently from strength gradient zirconia. Different polymer-based materials indicated for definitive fixed prostheses that could be used with additive or subtractive manufacturing have also been marketed recently. However, knowledge on the long-term fatigue behavior of cantilevered implant-supported prostheses made from these polymer-based materials and strength gradient zirconia is lacking.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the fatigue behavior of implant-supported cantilevered prostheses of recently introduced computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing polymers and zirconia.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A master standard tessellation language file of a 9×11×20-mm specimen with a titanium base (Ti-base) space that represented an implant-supported cantilevered prosthesis was used to fabricate specimens from additively manufactured interim resin (AM), polymethyl methacrylate (SM-PM), nanographene-reinforced polymethyl methacrylate (SM-GR), high-impact polymer composite resin (SM-CR), and strength gradient zirconia (SM-ZR) (n=10). Each specimen was prepared by following the respective manufacturer's recommendations, and Ti-base abutments were cemented with an autopolymerizing luting composite resin. After cementation, the specimens were mounted in a mastication simulator and subjected to 1.2 million loading cycles under 100 N at 1.5 Hz; surviving specimens were subjected to another 1.2 million loading cycles under 200 N at 1.5 Hz. The load was applied to the cantilever extension, 12-mm from the clamp of the mastication simulator. The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox proportional hazards model were used to evaluate the data (α=.05).

RESULTS

Significant differences in survival rate and hazard ratio were observed among materials (P<.001). Among tested materials, SM-ZR had the highest and AM had the lowest survival rate (P≤.031). All materials had a significantly higher hazard ratio than SM-ZR (P≤.011) in the increasing order of SM-GR, SM-PM, SM-CR, and AM.

CONCLUSIONS

SM-ZR had the highest survival rate with no failed specimens. Even though most of the tested polymer-based materials failed during cyclic loading, these failures were commonly observed during the second 1.2 million loading cycles with 200 N. All materials had a higher hazard ratio than SM-ZR.

Effect of thermal cycling on the flexural strength of 3-D printed, CAD/CAM milled and heat-polymerized denture base materials

BACKGROUND

This study compared the impact of thermal cycling on the flexural strength of denture-base materials produced through conventional and digital methods, using both subtractive and additive approaches.

METHODS

In total, 60 rectangular specimens were fabricated with specific dimensions for flexural strength tests. The dimensions were set according to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) guideline 20795-1:2013 as 64 × 10 × 3.3 ± 0.2 mm. Specimens from each material group were divided into two subgroups (thermal cycled or nonthermal cycled, n = 10/group). We used distinct methods to produce three different denture-base materials: Ivobase (IB), which is a computer-aided-design/computer-aided-manufacturing-type milled pre-polymerized polymethyl methacrylate resin disc; Formlabs (FL), a 3D-printed denture-base resin; and Meliodent (MD), a conventional heat-polymerized acrylic. Flexural strength tests were performed on half of the samples without a thermal-cycle procedure, and the other half were tested after a thermal cycle. The data were analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance and a post hoc Tukey test (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

Based on the results of flexural-strength testing, the ranking was as follows: FL > IB > MD. The effect of thermal aging was statistically significant for the FL and IB bases, but not for the MD base.

CONCLUSIONS

Digitally produced denture bases exhibited superior flexural strength compared with conventionally manufactured bases. Although thermal cycling reduced flexural strength in all groups, the decrease was not statistically significant in the heat-polymerized acrylic group.

Effect of coffee thermocycling on the surface roughness and stainability of denture base materials with different chemical compositions manufactured with additive and subtractive technologies

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the effect of coffee thermocycling (CTC) on the surface roughness (Ra ) and stainability of denture base materials with different chemical compositions fabricated by using additive and subtractive manufacturing.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Disk-shaped specimens were additively (FREEPRINT denture, AM) or subtractively (G-CAM, GSM and M-PM, SM) fabricated from three pink denture base materials in different chemical compositions (n = 10). Ra was measured before and after polishing, while color coordinates were measured after polishing. Specimens were subjected to CTC (5000 cycles) and measurements were repeated. Color differences (ΔE00 ) after CTC were calculated. Ra among different time intervals within materials was evaluated by using repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA), while 1-way ANOVA was used to evaluate the Ra of different materials within each time interval and the ΔE00 values. Color coordinates within each material were compared by using paired samples t-tests (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

Ra before polishing was the highest for all materials (p < 0.001), while SM had its lowest Ra after CTC and AM had its lowest Ra after polishing (p ≤ 0.008). Before polishing, AM had the highest Ra among the materials (p < 0.001). After polishing, SM had higher Ra than AM (p < 0.001). After CTC, GSM had the lowest Ra (p ≤ 0.048). SM had the lowest (p ≤ 0.031) and AM had the highest (p < 0.001) ΔE00 . CTC decreased the a* and b* values of SM and AM (p ≤ 0.017), and increased the L* values of AM (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

Polishing significantly reduced the surface roughness of all materials. CTC did not increase the surface roughness of materials above the clinically acceptable threshold. Only AM had perceptible color change when previously reported threshold values for denture base materials were considered.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Tested denture base materials may have similar surface stability after coffee thermocycling. However, subtractively manufactured denture base materials may have improved color stability when subjected to long-term coffee consumption.

The effect of aging on hardness of heat cured denture base resin modified with recycled acrylic resin

BACKGROUND

The second rule of the 4Rs concept (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recover) was applied in this study using recycled acrylic resin to improve the hardness and study the effect of aging on the hardness of heat cured denture base resins.

METHOD

Forty heat-cured acrylic resin samples were prepared and divided into control and modified groups. The hardness was tested using a type D durometer hardness tester for evaluating the effect of the thermal aging process on the hardness in the control and modified groups. The samples were either subjected to thermal aging (the specimens thermo-cycled 10 cycles per day between 55°C and 5°C with a 30-s dwell time) or were not.

RESULTS

The mean difference in hardness between specimens with and without aging in the modified group increased with increasing concentrations of incorporated recycled acrylic resin. Independent samples t test revealed that the hardness values of modified groups with aging were significantly higher than in those without aging (p ≤ 0.05). ANOVA revealed that the modified group revealed a significant increase in hardness than that of the control group (p ≤ 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Recycling and reuse of acrylic resins improved the hardness of denture base resins. The aging period significantly affected the hardness values of the control and modified groups.

Flexural strength, surface roughness, and biofilm formation of ceramic-reinforced PEEK: An in vitro comparative study

PURPOSE

This in vitro study aimed to compare flexural strength, surface roughness, and biofilm formation of ceramic-reinforced polyetheretherketone (PEEK) with conventionally heat-compressed and milled polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) denture base materials.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Thirty strips (6.4 mm × 10 mm × 3 mm) and 30 discs (10 mm × 1 mm) were fabricated from a heat-compressed PMMA, milled PMMA, and ceramic-reinforced PEEK, 10 each. One surface of each sample was polished to mimic the laboratory procedure for denture base materials. Strips were then subjected to a three-point bend test using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 5.0 mm/min. An optical profilometer was used to assess the Ra value (mm) of the discs on polished and unpolished sides. Biofilm formation behavior was analyzed by measuring the colony-forming unit (CFU)/mL of Candida albicans on the unpolished surface of the discs. One-way ANOVA followed by Tukey multiple comparison tests were used to compare the flexural strength, Ra value, and biofilm formation of the studied materials (a = 0.05).

RESULTS

Ceramic-reinforced PEEK showed significantly higher flexural strength (178.2 ± 3.2 MPa) than milled PMMA (89.6 ± 0.8 MPa; p < 0.001) and heat-compressed PMMA (67.3 ± 5.3 MPa; p < 0.001). Ceramic-reinforced PEEK exhibited a significantly higher Ra value than the other groups on unpolished sides; however, the polishing process significantly reduced the Ra values of all studied groups (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in C. albicans adhesion among the groups (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The flexural strength of tested materials was within acceptable limits for clinical use as a denture base material. Ceramic-reinforced PEEK had the highest surface roughness; however, its similarity in biofilm formation to other groups indicates its clinical acceptability as denture base material.

Graphene loaded into dental polymers as reinforcement of mechanical properties: A systematic review

Graphene compounds are incorporated into polymers in order to improve their mechanical properties and in dentistry this modification favors the clinical performance of these materials. The aim of this review was to evaluate graphene compounds, their concentrations, and their effect on mechanical properties as flexural, tensile, and compressive strength and hardness of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) for dental application. The search was carried out in two steps in PubMed/Medline, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. The eligibility criteria included studies that incorporated pure graphene compounds into dental polymers and evaluated their mechanical properties. Were found 4984 results, of which 11 articles were included in this review. Graphene compounds: graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) were incorporated into PMMA and PEEK, in concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 10 wt%. Concentrations lower than 0.75 wt% of GO in PMMA and 1 wt% of GNP in PEEK resulted in increased flexural, tensile, compression strength, and hardness of these polymers. It was concluded that the incorporation of graphene compounds in low concentrations increases dental polymers' mechanical properties.

Effect of coffee thermal cycling on the surface properties and stainability of additively manufactured denture base resins in different layer thicknesses

PURPOSE

To compare the effect of coffee thermal cycling on surface roughness (Ra), Vickers microhardness (MH), and stainability of denture base resins additively manufactured in different layer thicknesses with those of subtractively manufactured denture base materials.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Eighty disk-shaped specimens (Ø10×2 mm) were fabricated from two subtractively (Merz M-PM [SM-M] and G-CAM [SM-G]) and three additively (NextDent 3D+ [50 µm, AM-N-50; 100 µm, AM-N-100], FREEPRINT Denture [50 µm, AM-F-50; 100 µm, AM-F-100], and Denturetec [50 µm, AM-S-50; 100 µm, AM-S-100]) manufactured denture base materials (n = 10). Ra measurements were performed before and after polishing by using a non-contact optical profilometer, while MH values and color coordinates were measured after polishing. Specimens were then subjected to 5000 cycles of coffee thermal cycling, all measurements were repeated, and color differences (ΔE00) were calculated. A linear mixed effect model was used to analyze Ra and MH data, while one-way analysis of variance was used to analyze ΔE00 data (α = 0.05). Ra values were further evaluated according to a clinically acceptable threshold of 0.2 µm, while ΔE00 values were evaluated according to perceptibility (1.72 units) and acceptability (4.08 units) thresholds. The interaction between the material type and the time interval affected both Ra and MH (p ≤ 0.001). Tested materials had their highest Ra before polishing (p ≤ 0.029). Before polishing, AM-F-100 had the highest, and SM-M and SM-G had the lowest Ra (p < 0.001). After polishing and after coffee thermal cycling, SM-G mostly had lower Ra than those of other materials (p ≤ 0.036). SM-G mostly had higher MH than that of other materials before and after coffee thermal cycling (p ≤ 0.025). Coffee thermal cycling reduced the MH of SM-M and increased that of AM-S-100 (p ≤ 0.024). AM-N-100 had higher ΔE00 than AM-F, AM-S-100, and SM-G (p ≤ 0.009), while AM-F and SM-G had lower ΔE00 than AM-S-50 and AM-N-50 (p ≤ 0.024).

CONCLUSIONS

Polishing reduced the surface roughness of all materials, whereas the effect of coffee thermal cycling was nonsignificant. Most of the tested materials had acceptable surface roughness after polishing and after coffee thermal cycling according to the reported threshold. Layer thickness only affected the microhardness of tested additively manufactured resins, which was material-dependent. Subtractively manufactured specimens mostly had high microhardness and that of nonreinforced subtractively manufactured resin decreased after coffee thermal cycling. When reported color thresholds are considered, all materials had acceptable color stability.

Effect of polishing and denture cleansers on the surface roughness of new-generation denture base materials and their color change after cleansing

PURPOSE

To evaluate the effect of polishing and denture cleansers on the surface roughness (Ra ) of new-generation denture base materials that are additively, subtractively, and conventionally fabricated, while also assessing their color change after cleansing.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

One hundred and fifty disk-shaped specimens (Ø10 × 2 mm) were prepared from five denture base materials (one subtractively manufactured nanographene-reinforced prepolymerized polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) (SM-GC), one subtractively manufactured prepolymerized PMMA (SM-PM), two additively manufactured denture base resins (AM-DT and AM-ND), and one heat-polymerized PMMA (CV) (n = 30). The Ra of the specimens was measured before and after conventional laboratory polishing, while color coordinates were measured after polishing. Specimens were then divided into three subgroups based on the denture cleanser: distilled water, 1% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), and effervescent tablet (n = 10). The Ra and color coordinates were remeasured after nine cleansing cycles over a period of 20 days. The CIEDE2000 formula was used to calculate the color differences (ΔE00 ). Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to analyze the Ra values before (n = 30) and after (n = 10) cleansing, while repeated measures ANOVA was used to analyze the Ra of material-time point pairs within each denture cleanser (n = 10). ΔE00 data after denture cleansing was also analyzed by using two-way ANOVA (n = 10) (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

Before polishing, Ra varied significantly among the materials. SM-GC and SM-PM had the lowest and AM-ND the highest Ra values (P < 0.001). Polishing significantly reduced Ra of all materials (P < 0.001), and after polishing, Ra differences among materials were nonsignificant (P ≥ 0.072). Regardless of the denture cleanser, the Ra of AM-DT, AM-ND, and CV was the highest before polishing when different time points were considered (P < 0.001). After cleansing, AM-ND had the highest Ra of all the materials, regardless of the cleanser (P ≤ 0.017). AM-DT had higher Ra than SM-PM when distilled water (P = 0.040) and higher Ra than SM-GC, SM-PM, and CV when NaOCl was used (P < 0.001). The type of cleanser significantly influenced the Ra of AM-DT, AM-ND, and CV. For AM-DT, NaOCl led to the highest Ra and the tablet led to the lowest Ra (P ≤ 0.042), while for AM-ND, distilled water led to the lowest Ra (P ≤ 0.024). For CV, the tablet led to lower Ra than distilled water (P = 0.009). Color change varied among the materials. When distilled water was used, SM-GC had higher ΔE00 than SM-PM and AM-DT (P ≤ 0.034). When NaOCl was used, AM-ND had higher ΔE00 than SM-GC, SM-PM, and AM-DT, while CV and SM-GC had higher ΔE00 than SM-PM and AM-DT (P ≤ 0.039). Finally, when the tablet was used, AM-ND and CV had the highest ΔE00 , while AM-DT had lower ΔE00 than SM-GC (P ≤ 0.015).

CONCLUSIONS

The tested materials had unacceptable surface roughness (>0.2 μm) before polishing. Roughness decreased significantly after polishing (<0.2 μm). Denture cleansers did not significantly affect the surface roughness of the materials, and roughness remained clinically acceptable after cleansing (<0.2 μm). Considering previously reported color thresholds, AM-ND and CV had unacceptable color change regardless of the denture cleanser, and the effervescent tablet led to perceptible, but acceptable color change for SM-GC, SM-PM, and AM-DT.

Can Graphene Pave the Way to Successful Periodontal and Dental Prosthetic Treatments? A Narrative Review

Graphene, as a promising material, holds the potential to significantly enhance the field of dental practices. Incorporating graphene into dental materials imparts enhanced strength and durability, while graphene-based nanocomposites offer the prospect of innovative solutions such as antimicrobial dental implants or scaffolds. Ongoing research into graphene-based dental adhesives and composites also suggests their capacity to improve the quality and reliability of dental restorations. This narrative review aims to provide an up-to-date overview of the application of graphene derivatives in the dental domain, with a particular focus on their application in prosthodontics and periodontics. It is important to acknowledge that further research and development are imperative to fully explore the potential of graphene and ensure its safe use in dental practices.
