Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiac troponin I, a particular biomarker, is released into the bloodstream in response to myocardial injury. OBJECTIVES To evaluate perioperative changes in high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI) concentration during ovariohysterectomy in cats undergoing three different anaesthesia protocols. METHODS Twenty-one female mixed-breed cats owned by clients aged (2.2 ± 0.7 years) and weight (3.2 ± 0.5 kg) were included in our study. The cats were divided into three groups: propofol-isoflurane (PI) group (n = 7), xylazine-ketamine (XK) group (n = 7) and xylazine-isoflurane (XI) group (n = 7). After pre-anaesthetic propofol (6 mg/kg IV) was administered to cats in Group PI, a mask was placed, and anaesthesia was maintained with 3.0% isoflurane in oxygen. Cats in Group XK underwent general anesthetization with xylazine hydrochloride (2 mg/kg IM) and, 10 min later, ketamine hydrochloride (10 mg/kg IM). Cats in Group XI were administered xylazine hydrochloride (2 mg/kg IM), and then anaesthesia (3.0% isoflurane and oxygen) was continued with a mask. Blood samples were collected from all cats; preoperatively and postoperatively at 0 and 12 h (Pre-, Post-0 h and Post-12 h, respectively). Serum hs-cTnI concentrations were measured with the Advia Centaur TnI-Ultra. RESULTS In all 21 cats, hs-cTnI concentration increased at Post-0 h and 12 h measurement points compared to Pre-. In the XK group, hs-cTnI concentrations exhibited a significant increase at the Post-0 h (51.30 ng/L) and Post-12 h (157.70 ng/L) time points compared to Pre- (6.70 ng/L) (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The XK group increased the concentration of hs-cTnI more than other protocols. In the PI group, the increase in hs-cTnI concentrations at Post-0 and 12 h increased less than the other two groups (p < 0.05). The PI group was found to induce less myocardial damage.

Abstract
Obesity, an extremely important factor in feline clinical practice, is estimated to affect up to one third of the feline population. Moreover, it can trigger chronic inflammation, which could predispose to oxidative stress by increasing reactive oxygen species, thereby generating potentially irreversible cellular damage. This study analyzed hematological, biochemical and oxidative stress profiles at various degrees of feline obesity. Forty-five cats were selected and divided into three groups: control (n = 17), overweight (n = 13) and obese (n = 15), after clinical and laboratory evaluation and body condition score. Biochemical and oxidative stress analyses were performed using a photocolorimeter and hematological analyses were performed in a veterinary cell counter. Obese cats showed increased mean corpuscular volume (MCV), red cell distribution width (RDW), HDL cholesterol and triglycerides and decreased activity of gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) than control cats, although within the reference ranges for the species. As for oxidative stress, obese cats showed higher total antioxidant capacity (TAC), by the inhibition of 2,2'-Azino-Bis-3-Ethylbenzthiazoline-6-Sulfonic Acid (ABTS), inhibition of ABTS associated with horseradish peroxidase (ABTS + HRP), cupric ion reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) methods, while overweight cats had a higher TAC-ABTS + HRP and TAC-FRAP than control cats. We conclude that the conditions of natural obesity and overweight in the feline species alter its hematological, biochemical and oxidative stress parameters.

Abstract
Laboratory tests can be altered in cardiovascular diseases and the investigation of specific tests or biomarkers may provide additional information about myocardial damage. Traditional laboratory tests, such as cell blood count, serum biochemistry, and coagulation, can be useful in investigating patients, but are not specific. However, markers like Troponin and Natriuretic Peptides may possibly furnish further data on myocardium damage and can be used in both studying and monitoring cats with cardiac disease. Moreover, the evaluation of the thyroid profile is very important as hyperthyroid cats concomitant cardiovascular diseases are very common and they can also be a direct consequence of endocrinopathy. The purpose of this manuscript is to provide the widest possible overview of what is present in the literature about the feline clinical pathology of heart diseases through a rational division of the main alterations of traditional tests and biomarkers.

Abstract
Case summary A 12-year-old male castrated domestic shorthair cat was evaluated for a 10
month history of weight loss. Thin body condition and a grade II/VI systolic
parasternal heart murmur was noted during examination. Moderate-to-severe
anemia and intermittent thrombocytopenia were identified on serial complete
blood counts. Antibodies against feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) were
detected, but vaccination for FIV occurred previously. Echocardiography
revealed biatrial and biventricular enlargement, left ventricular
hypertrophy and pericardial effusion. Splenomegaly was present on abdominal
ultrasound and cytological evaluation revealed macrophagic infiltration with
erythrophagocytosis. Cytological evaluation of the bone marrow revealed
similar findings. Histopathology of the spleen confirmed hemophagocytosis
with no evidence of malignancy. A presumptive diagnosis of hemophagocytic
syndrome was made. PCR testing for FIV on the splenic tissue was negative.
The cat was treated with lomustine. Disease progression occurred
approximately 6 months after diagnosis and the cat was euthanized. Relevance and novel information To our knowledge, this is one of the few reports describing the diagnosis of
hemophagocytic syndrome in a cat.

Abstract
Cardiac biomarkers have been used in cats as part of the clinical assessment of heart disease for over a decade. They are widely available to practitioners through commercial reference laboratories. The evidence base for the use of cardiac biomarkers (primarily N-terminal pro-B type natriuretic peptide and cardiac troponin I) in cats is comprehensively reviewed in this article, focusing on each of six specific areas: distinguishing cardiac from non-cardiac causes of respiratory distress; measurement of cardiac biomarkers in urine and pleural fluid; identification of occult cardiomyopathy; effects of systemic disease on circulating concentrations of cardiac biomarkers; point-of-care biomarker testing, and the possible prognostic utility of cardiac biomarker measurement.

Abstract
Cardiac troponins are sensitive and specific markers of myocardial injury. The troponin concentration can be thought of as a quantitative measure of the degree of injury sustained by the heart, however, it provides no information on the cause of injury or the mechanism of troponin release. Conventionally, the cardiac troponins have been used for diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction in humans and have become the gold standard biomarkers for this indication. They have become increasingly recognized as an objective measure of cardiomyocyte status in both cardiac and noncardiac disease, supplying additional information to that provided by echocardiography and ECG. Injury to cardiomyocytes can occur through a variety of mechanisms with subsequent release of troponins. Independent of the underlying disease or the mechanism of troponin release, the presence of myocardial injury is associated with an increased risk of death. As increasingly sensitive assays are introduced, the frequent occurrence of myocardial injury is becoming apparent, and our understanding of its causes and importance is constantly evolving. Presently troponins are valuable for detecting a subgroup of patients with higher risk of death. Future research is needed to clarify whether troponins can serve as monitoring tools guiding treatment, whether administering more aggressive treatment to patients with evidence of myocardial injury is beneficial, and whether normalizing of troponin concentrations in patients presenting with evidence of myocardial injury is associated with reduced risk of death.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The measurement of serum cardiac troponin I concentrations in dogs with a range of non-primary cardiac illnesses suggests that cardiac myocyte damage is commonplace. Dogs with primary immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia have increased serum cardiac troponin I concentrations at the time of diagnosis. However, it is unclear whether biochemical evidence of cardiac myocyte damage improves following successful treatment of anaemia. METHODS A haematology profile was performed and serum cardiac troponin I concentrations were measured in 19 dogs with primary immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia before and after treatment. RESULTS The haematocrit increased significantly (P = 0 · 0001) following treatment of primary IMHA (median pre: 0 · 13 L/L, median post: 0 · 33 L/L). The serum cardiac troponin I concentrations decreased significantly (P < 0 · 05) after treatment (median pre: 0 · 26 ng/mL, median post: 0 · 16 ng/mL). CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Serum cardiac troponin I concentration decreases following successful treatment of primary immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia. The clinical and prognostic significance of serum cardiac troponin I concentrations before and after treatment in dogs with primary immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia merits further investigation.
