Benefits of napping habits in healthy adults: Maintaining alerting performance and cortisol levels change within 90 min of habitual napping time

BACKGROUND

Napping is garnering increased attention as a strategy for adults to sustain alertness and alleviate stress in contemporary society. The nuances of napping habits are emerging as an independent factor influencing the extent of individual benefits. This study aimed to demonstrate the long-term benefits of napping and explore the impact of napping habits on individual alertness, as well as whether this effect was correlated with cortisol levels.

METHODS

The study involved 80 healthy adults categorized into two groups based on self-reported napping habits: habitual nappers (n = 49) and non-habitual nappers (n = 31). Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS), psychomotor vigilance task (PVT), and saliva collection were performed every 30 min within 90 min in the absence of napping during the afternoon dip. The measurements were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA and Pearson correlation analyses.

RESULTS

There was an interaction between groups and time in reaction speed and lapse number of PVT and cortisol (all p < 0.05). Post hoc analysis found that habitual nappers maintained higher objective alertness and experienced more significant increases in cortisol over time (all p < 0.05). The cortisol levels at sleepiness time were negatively associated with the slowest 10 % reaction speed of PVT in non-habitual nappers (r = -0.409, p = 0.022).

CONCLUSION

Under the premise of mitigating the impacts of acute nap deprivation on sleep homeostasis and rhythm, napping habits emerge as a potential factor influencing the ability of individuals to sustain heightened alertness.

Causal relationship between sleep traits and cognitive impairment: A Mendelian randomization study

OBJECTIVE

Observational studies had demonstrated a link between sleep disturbances and cognitive decline. Here, we aimed to investigate the causal association between genetically predicted sleep traits and cognitive impairment using Mendelian randomization (MR).

METHODS

Using strict criteria, we selected genetic variants from European ancestry Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) from the Sleep Disorders Knowledge Portal and UK Biobank as instrumental variables for several sleep traits, including insomnia, sleep duration, daytime sleepiness, daytime napping, and chronotype. Summary statistics related to cognitive impairment were derived from five different GWAS, including the Social Science Genetic Association Consortium. The role of self-reported sleep trait phenotypes in the etiology of cognitive impairment was explored using inverse-variance weighted (IVW) tests, MR-Egger tests, and weighted medians, and sensitivity analyses were conducted to ensure robustness.

RESULTS

In the main IVW analysis, sleep duration (reaction time: β = -0.05, 95% CI -0.07 to -0.04, p = 1.93×10-12 ), daytime sleepiness (average cortical thickness: β = -0.12, 95% CI -0.22 to -0.02, p = 0.023), and daytime napping (fluid intelligence: β = -0.47, 95% CI -0.87 to -0.07, p = 0.021; hippocampal volume in Alzheimer's disease: β = -0.99, 95% CI -1.64 to -0.35, p = 0.002) were significantly negatively correlated with cognitive performance. However, any effects of insomnia and chronotype on cognitive impairment were not determined.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings highlighted that focusing on sleep behaviors or distinct sleep patterns-particularly sleep duration, daytime sleepiness, and daytime napping, was a promising approach for preventing cognitive impairment. This study also shed light on risk factors for and potential early markers of cognitive impairment risk factors.

Correlation of Various Sleep Patterns on Different Types of Memory Retention: A Systematic Review

Sleep has a substantial impact on memory consolidation, although the link between specific sleep patterns and different forms of memory retention is not well-understood. The purpose of this systematic review is to investigate the correlation between varying sleep habits and memory recall. To identify pertinent research published between 2017 and 2023, a thorough check of electronic databases was carried out. Inclusion criteria encompassed peer-reviewed articles published in English, focusing on human participants, and investigating the relationship between sleep patterns and memory retention. Data extraction and quality assessment were performed on selected studies. This research used different strategies and examined several forms of memory retention, including declarative memory, procedural memory, and emotional memory. Several sleep patterns, including sleep duration, sleep stages, and sleep continuity, were investigated. This comprehensive study demonstrated the relationship between adequate sleep duration and memory consolidation, particularly in regard to declarative memory. Furthermore, deep sleep, characterized by slow-wave sleep (SWS), has been associated with superior procedural memory retention. Sleep continuity, as evaluated by reduced sleep fragmentation or undisturbed sleep, influenced memory consolidation across multiple categories of memory. However, the relationship between rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and memory retention remains inconclusive due to conflicting findings. This systematic review emphasizes the significance of various sleep patterns in memory retention. Memory consolidation corresponds with adequate sleep length, deep sleep (or SWS), and sleep continuity. Future research ought to investigate the connection between REM sleep and memory retention. Understanding the impact of specific sleep patterns on memory processes might help guide therapies and interventions to improve memory consolidation and overall cognitive functioning.
