Abstract
BACKGROUND In people, obesity is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, associated with systemic hypertension, cardiac remodelling and systolic and diastolic dysfunction. Weight reduction can reverse myocardial remodelling and reduce risk of subsequent cardiovascular disease. In cats, far less is known regarding the effects of obesity and subsequent weight reduction on cardiovascular morphology and function. This prospective study aimed to assess cardiac morphology and function, heart rate variability, cardiac biomarkers and body composition before and after controlled weight reduction in cats with obesity. Body composition analysis (by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry, DEXA) and cardiovascular assessment (echocardiography, systemic arterial systolic blood pressure, electrocardiography, plasma cardiac biomarkers) were performed prior to weight management in twenty cats with obesity. These investigations were repeated in eleven cats that reached target weight. RESULTS At baseline, systemic hypertension was not documented, but the majority of cats with obesity (15 out of 19) showed echocardiographic evidence of diastolic dysfunction. Eleven of 20 cats had increased maximal end-diastolic septal or left ventricular free wall thickness (≥ 6.0 mm) at baseline. Median (interquartile range) percentage of weight lost in the cats reaching target weight was 26% (17-29%), with a median reduction in body fat mass of 45% (26-64%). Both the end-diastolic left ventricular free wall (median magnitude of change -0.85 mm, IQR -0.05 mm to -1.55 mm, P = 0.019; median percentage reduction 14.0%) and end-diastolic interventricular septum (median magnitude of change -0.5 mm, IQR -0.2 mm to -1.225 mm, P = 0.047; median percentage reduction 7.9%) thickness decreased after weight reduction. Following weight reduction, pulsed wave tissue Doppler imaging of the left ventricular free wall was consistent with improved diastolic function in 4 out of 8 cats, however there was no significant difference in overall diastolic function class. Further, there was no change in heart rate variability or cardiac biomarkers with weight reduction. CONCLUSION An increase in left ventricular wall thickness and diastolic dysfunction were common echocardiographic features in cats with obesity within our study and may be reversible with successful weight and fat mass loss. Further studies are required to clarify the clinical consequences of these findings.

Abstract
This review includes 36 studies of transthoracic real-time three-dimensional echocardiography (RT3DE) in animals. Most of these studies concern cardiac chamber quantification of the left atrium and left ventricle, in dogs. Comparisons of RT3DE and different two-dimensional echocardiographic (2DE) methods have been reported in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD), dilated cardiomyopathy, and in healthy control dogs. Comparisons of RT3DE and standard reference methods have been reported in healthy control dogs. In dogs with MMVD, volumetric RT3DE measurements of left atrium do not appear to provide superior prognostic value compared with 2DE methods using Simpson's method of discs in dogs with MMVD. The major advantages of RT3DE compared to 2DE include improvements in visualization of the complex morphology of the mitral valve, the estimation of mitral valve regurgitation, and improved visualization of complex congenital cardiac abnormalities.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES Veterinary echocardiographers' preferences for left atrial (LA) size assessment in cats have not been systematically investigated. The primary aim of this prospective exploratory study was to investigate echocardiographers' preferences concerning LA size assessment in cats. A secondary aim was to investigate echocardiographers' preferences for assessing LA size in subgroups based on geographic, demographic, and professional profiles. ANIMALS, MATERIALS, AND METHODS An online survey instrument was designed, verified, and distributed globally to veterinary echocardiographers. RESULTS A total of 655 veterinary echocardiographers from six continents and 54 countries, working in specialty practice (56%) and in general practice (38%), provided data. Linear two-dimensional (2D) technique was favored by most echocardiographers (n = 612) for LA size assessment. Most commonly, respondents combined linear 2D with subjective assessment (n = 227), while 209 used linear 2D-based methods alone. Most echocardiographers using linear 2D-based methods preferred the right parasternal short-axis view and to index the LA to the aorta (Ao). Approximately 10% of the respondents obtained LA dimensions from a right parasternal long-axis four-chamber view. Approximately one-third of echocardiographers that made linear measurements from 2D echocardiograms shared the same preferences regarding cat position, acquisition view, indexing method and time point identification for the LA measurement. The responses were comparably homogeneous across geographic location, level of training, years performing echocardiography, and type of practice. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION Most veterinary echocardiographers assessed LA size in cats using linear 2D echocardiography from a right parasternal short-axis view, and indexed LA to Ao. Respondents' preferences were similar over geographic, demographic, and professional backgrounds.

Abstract
Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a life-threatening condition in cats with cardiomyopathy. We hypothesized that myocardial dysfunction may induce progression to CHF pathophysiology in cats with cardiomyopathy. However, no previous studies have evaluated the involvement of myocardial dysfunction in cats with CHF. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between CHF and myocardial function assessed using two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography (2D-STE). Sixteen client-owned healthy cats and 32 cats with cardiomyopathy were enrolled in this study. Cats were classified into three groups: healthy cats, cardiomyopathy without CHF (CM group), and cardiomyopathy with CHF (CHF group). Left ventricular (LV) longitudinal and circumferential strains (SL and SC, respectively), and right ventricular (RV) SL were measured using 2D-STE. Logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the relationship between CHF and echocardiographic variables, including 2D-STE. Results comparing the healthy cats and CM vs. CHF groups showed that increased left atrial to aortic diameter ratio and decreased LV apical SC were significantly associated with the existence of CHF (odds ratio [95% confidence interval]: 1.40 [1.16-1.78] and 1.59 [1.06-2.36], respectively). Results comparing the CM vs. CHF group showed that increased end-diastolic RV internal dimension and decreased RV SL were significantly associated with the existence of CHF (odds ratio: 1.07 [1.00-1.13] and 1.34 [1.07-1.68], respectively). Left atrial enlargement and depressed LV apical myocardial function may be useful tools for predicting the progression to CHF in cats. Furthermore, RV enlargement and dysfunction may lead to the onset of CHF in asymptomatic cats with cardiomyopathy.

Abstract
Feline arterial thromboembolism (ATE) is a condition with a high mortality rate. Acid-base abnormalities may be beneficial to the prognosis of cats with ATE. Venous blood gas and electrolytes data on the first day of ATE presentation of 47 cats with ATE were retrospectively reviewed and analysed. The Cox and logistic regression were analysed to evaluate the relationship between acid-base parameters and death. The most common venous acid-base disorder was simple metabolic acidosis. Age, body weight, and partial venous pressure of carbon dioxide (PvCO2) differed between the dead and alive groups within 7 days of the onset of ATE presentation (p < 0.05). Cox-regression showed that increasing age (HR=1.175 [95% CI: 1.027-1.343], p = 0.019), increasing PvCO2 (HR=1.066 [95% CI: 1.010-1.125], p = 0.021) and PvCO2 more than 34 mmHg (HR=7.878 [95% CI: 1.036- 59.915], p = 0.046) were associated with increased hazard of death. Multivariable logistic regression showed that age > 5 years (OR=9.030, 95% CI: 1.258- 64.823; p=0.029), and PvCO2 > 34 mmHg (OR=21.764, 95% CI: 1.747-271.141; p=0.017) were associated with an increased risk of death, while concomitant administration of enoxaparin with clopidogrel (OR=0.111, 95% CI: 0.015-0.795; p=0.029) were associated with a decreased risk of death within 7 days of the onset of ATE presentation. This study demonstrated the power of venous blood gas analysis which may be used as prognostic indicators for cats with ATE.

Abstract
Background: Myocardial infarction (MI) is an important cause of death and disability among humans worldwide. Few studies have reported the occurrence of MI in small animals as well. Reports in human medicine indicate that up to 30% of patients with clinical signs compatible with myocardial ischemia suggestive of coronary disease exhibit normal epicardial arteries at angiography. These symptoms have been associated with a syndrome characterized by alterations in cardiac microvasculature, known as coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD). Aim: This study aimed to describe the necropsy findings and clinical-pathological characterization (when available) of cats with histopathological findings suggesting CMD. Methods: Necropsy records of cats presenting histopathological diagnosis compatible with acute and/or chronic MI, with normal epicardial arteries and microvascular disorders were evaluated. Results: Twenty animals met the inclusion criteria. Eight cats (40%) exhibited findings compatible with mild hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) without left atrial enlargement, one (5%) presented restrictive cardiomyopathy, and another one (5%) had lesions consistent with histiocytoid cardiomyopathy. The remaining cats (50%) showed alterations compatible with severe HCM with left atrial enlargement. In all cases, epicardial arteries were normal (without obstruction). All the evaluated hearts exhibited myocardial multifocal fibrosis along with replacement of cardiomyocytes by adipose tissue and blood vessels with hyperplasia and hypertrophy of the muscular layer with protrusion of the nuclei of the endothelial cells. Conclusion: These findings suggest the presence of microvascular dysplasia of the coronary arteries. Further studies are necessary to confirm and clinically characterize these results.

Abstract
Practical relevance: Although feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) occurs more commonly,
dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM),
arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), left ventricular
noncompaction (LVNC) and cardiomyopathy – nonspecific phenotype (NCM;
formerly unclassified cardiomyopathy) are all recognized in domestic
cats. Patient group: Any adult domestic cat, of either sex and of any breed, can be affected. Diagnostics: The non-HCM cardiomyopathies are rarely suspected in subclinically affected
cats, so most are first identified when a cat presents with signs of heart
failure or systemic thromboembolic disease. The definitive clinical
confirmatory test for these other feline cardiomyopathies is
echocardiography. Key findings: ‘Cardiomyopathy – nonspecific phenotype’ is a catch-all term that groups
hearts with myocardial changes that either do not meet the criteria for any
one type of cardiomyopathy (HCM, RCM, DCM, ARVC, LVNC) or meet the
echocardiography criteria for more than one type. RCM is characterized by
diastolic dysfunction due to fibrosis that results in a restrictive
transmitral flow pattern on Doppler echocardiography and usually marked left
or biatrial enlargement. DCM is characterized by decreased myocardial
contractility and is rare in cats. When it occurs, it is seldom due to
taurine deficiency. However, since taurine-deficient DCM is usually
reversible, a diet history should be obtained, whole blood and plasma
taurine levels should be measured and taurine should be supplemented in the
diet if the diet is not commercially manufactured. ARVC should be suspected
in adult cats with severe right heart enlargement and right heart failure
(ascites and/or pleural effusion), especially if arrhythmia is present.
Feline LVNC is rare; its significance continues to be explored. Treatment of
the consequences of these cardiomyopathies (management of heart failure,
thromboprophylaxis, treatment of systemic arterial thromboembolism) is the
same as for HCM. Conclusions: While these other cardiomyopathies are less prevalent than HCM in cats, their
clinical and radiographic presentation is often indistinguishable from HCM.
Echocardiography is usually the only ante-mortem method to determine which
type of cardiomyopathy is present. However, since treatment and prognosis
are often similar for the feline cardiomyopathies, distinguishing among the
cardiomyopathies is often not essential for determining appropriate
therapy. Areas of uncertainty: The feline cardiomyopathies do not always fit into one distinct category.
Interrelationships among cardiomyopathies in cats may exist and
understanding these relationships in the future might provide critical
insights regarding treatment and prognosis.

Abstract
Background Restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM) is a common myocardial disease in cats, characterized by diastolic dysfunction and atrial enlargement without myocardial hypertrophy. Especially, endomyocardial form of RCM, one of the subtypes in RCM, is characterized by endocardial fibrosis, endocardial scar bridging the interventricular septum and left ventricular (LV) free wall, and deformation and distortion of the LV. However, it is unclear how the myocardial dysfunction and the endocardial scar contribute to the pathophysiology of RCM disease progression. Case presentation A 3 years and 2 months old, intact male, Domestic shorthaired cat was presented for consultation of cardiac murmur. At the first visit (day 0), the notable abnormal finding was echocardiography-derived chordae tendineae-like structure bridging the interventricular septum and the LV free wall, resulting high-speed blood flow in the left ventricle. Electrocardiography, thoracic radiography and noninvasive blood pressure measurements were normal. No left atrial enlargement was observed, and LV inflow velocity showed an abnormal relaxation pattern. Although there was no abnormality in tissue Doppler imaging-derived myocardial velocity, two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (2D-STE) revealed a decrease in the LV longitudinal strain and an increase in endocardial to epicardial ratio of the LV circumferential strain on day 0. On day 468, obvious left atrium enlargement and smoke like echo in the left atrium were observed. The LV inflow velocity was fused, and the tissue Doppler imaging-derived early-diastolic myocardial velocity of the septal mitral annulus decreased. Regarding 2D-STE, LV circumferential strain was further decreased, and right ventricular strain was additionally decreased. Although the general condition was good, we made a clinical diagnosis of endomyocardial RCM based on the above findings. On day 503, the cat showed the radiographic evidence of pulmonary edema and congestive heart failure signs. Conclusions Cats with abnormal LV structure and associated myocardial dysfunction like this case needs careful observation. Additionally, 2D-STE indices may be useful for early detection of myocardial dysfunction in feline RCM.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The left ventricular systolic longitudinal function, traditionally measured by M-mode-derived mitral annular plane systolic excursion (MAPSE), is reduced in feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and further reduced in cats with left-sided congestive heart failure (CHF). The objectives of this study were to compare longitudinal displacement measured by tissue tracking (TT-LD) and MAPSE in feline HCM and assess these methods' ability to differentiate CHF from preclinical HCM. A further objective was to provide preliminary reference intervals for TT-LD. ANIMALS Eighty-five client-owned cats. METHODS A retrospective case-control study. Anatomical M-mode was used to record MAPSE, and TT-LD was recorded by tissue tracking. RESULTS Reduced longitudinal displacement measured by either MAPSE or TT-LD was significantly associated with CHF in cats with HCM (p < 0.036). Receiver-operating characteristic analysis indicated that TT-LD (AUC: 92.9%-97.9%) was more sensitive and specific than MAPSE (AUC: 85.8%-89.1%) for the detection of CHF. A diagnostic cut-off of 2.89 mm for maximal TT-LD in the left ventricular septum resulted in a sensitivity and specificity of 100% and 83.3%, while a diagnostic cut-off of 2.41 mm in the left ventricular posterior wall resulted in a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 90%. CONCLUSIONS M-mode-derived mitral annular plane systolic excursion and TT-LD were strongly correlated, but not interchangeable. Longitudinal displacement measured by tissue tracking decreased more with disease severity than traditional MAPSE. Longitudinal displacement may help detect CHF in cats with HCM - with the maximal TT-LD of the left ventricular posterior wall achieving the highest AUC value.

Abstract
Simple Summary The endomyocardial form of restrictive cardiomyopathy, a primary disorder of the myocardium, is one of the diseases with poor prognosis in cats. While two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography has been known to identify myocardial deformations, its function relative to cats with the endomyocardial form of restrictive cardiomyopathy has yet to be characterized. We hypothesized that both the left and right myocardial functional abnormalities may occur in cats with the endomyocardial form of restrictive cardiomyopathy, causing this disease pathophysiology and clinical status. In the current study, cats were assessed for layer-specific myocardial function (whole, endocardial, and epicardial) in the left ventricular longitudinal and circumferential directions, and right ventricular longitudinal direction, via two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography. Our study indicated that cats with restrictive cardiomyopathy have reduced left ventricular myocardial function. Notably, left ventricular systolic circumferential endocardial strain and circumferential endocardial-to-epicardial strain ratio were lower in cats with restrictive cardiomyopathy. Furthermore, some right ventricular myocardial deformations were also differerent in cats with restrictive cardiomyopathy. Myocardial function assessed by two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography could reveal left and right myocardial dysfunction. Out of the 25 animals included in this study, 10 were client-owned cats with EMF-RCM, and 15 were healthy cats. In this study, cats were assessed for layer-specific myocardial function (whole, endocardial, and epicardial) in the left ventricular longitudinal and circumferential directions, and right ventricular longitudinal direction, via two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography (2D-STE). Cats with EMF-RCM had depressed left ventricular myocardial deformations both in systole (whole longitudinal strain, epicardial longitudinal strain, and endocardial circumferential strain) and diastole (early and late diastolic longitudinal strain rates, and late diastolic circumferential strain rate) compared to controls. Furthermore, some right ventricular myocardial deformations (systolic longitudinal strain in epicardial layers, and endocardial-to-epicardial strain ratio) were significantly differerent in cats with EMF-RCM. Myocardial function assessed by 2D-STE could reveal left and right myocardial dysfunction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of ageing on the cardiovascular system of healthy adult cats. METHODS Six experimental cats were used. Echocardiography and measurements of systolic blood pressure (SBP) were performed every year for 8 years (from 1 year of age to 8 years of age) in all cats. Age-related changes to left ventricular (LV) structures, LV systolic and diastolic function, and SBP were assessed. RESULTS There were no significant changes in LV structures and SBP. Peak longitudinal strain rate during systole was decreased at 8 years of age, and peak longitudinal strain rate during diastole was decreased from 6 years of age. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE This study revealed that some measures of cardiac function recorded in six healthy cats from 1 to 8 years of age were affected as the cats got older; however, there were no structural changes or changes in measurements that are routinely assessed in clinical practice.

Abstract
Simple Summary Infections caused by lungworms are an emerging issue in feline medicine. Clinical features in cats may vary from subclinical infections to a severe disease, occasionally including fatal pneumonia, depending on different factors, e.g., lungworm species, parasitic burden, and age of the animal. A case of infection caused by Aelurostrongylus abstrusus in a domestic kitten presenting acute dyspnoea and ascites is presented here. Clinical, radiological, echocardiographic, parasitological, molecular, and pathological data are described. This is the first report of life-threatening pulmonary hypertension inducing congestive heart failure caused by A. abstrusus infection in a domestic kitten. Abstract Aelurostrongylus abstrusus is considered the most important respiratory nematode of domestic cats worldwide. This parasite inhabits the alveoli, alveolar ducts, and bronchioles and causes a subacute to chronic respiratory clinical disease. Clinical signs may occur in domestic cats of any age, though they are more often described in young animals. Physical examination, echocardiography, thoracic radiography, pulmonary and cardiac pathological findings, classical, and molecular parasitological analysis of a six-month-old kitten referred at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of Pisa (Italy) led to a diagnosis of parasitic bronchopneumonia caused by A. abstrusus, which was complicated by severe pulmonary hypertension (PH) and right-sided congestive heart failure (R-CHF) that caused the death of the animal. Cases of reversible PH associated with A. abstrusus infection have been seldom reported in cats. This is the first report of fatal PH and R-CHF in a kitten with clinical aelurostrongylosis.

BACKGROUND In dogs with congestive heart failure (CHF), the efficacy of torasemide, a loop diuretic, has been demonstrated. However, unlike in dogs and humans little has been described about the use of torasemide in the cat with spontaneous CHF. The objectives of this retrospective study were therefore to describe the therapeutic use of oral torasemide in cats with spontaneous CHF, document its potential adverse effects while reporting the clinical course of this feline population following torasemide administration in addition to standard medical therapy. RESULTS Medical records of 21 client-owned cats with CHF (median age = 10.6 years [interquartile range (IQR) = 6.5-11.2]) receiving torasemide were reviewed. Data collected included torasemide dosages, other concurrent medications, physical examination features, echocardiographic data, and potential adverse effects during follow-up. A survival analysis was performed to estimate the time from diagnosis to cardiac death. Dyspnea related to CHF was identified in all cats (pleural effusion [8/21], pulmonary edema [5/21] or both [8/21]), associated with ascites in 4/21 cats. The CHF cause was determined by echocardiography in all cats: hypertrophic (n = 10), restrictive (n = 6), arrhythmogenic right ventricular (n = 3), dilated (n = 1) cardiomyopathies, and aortic valve abnormality (n = 1). At initiation, median torasemide dosage was 0.21 mg/kg [IQR = 0.17-0.23] q24h. Clinical signs declined in most cats (20/21) during the first 2 weeks with no remarkable adverse events. Median survival time after torasemide prescription was 182 days [IQR = 46-330]. A contemporary control group including 54 cats with CHF, receiving furosemide as sole loop diuretic treatment was compared with the study group. Median (IQR) survival time of cats in the control group was not significatively different (p = 0.962) from that of the torasemide group, i.e., 148 days (9-364), although the torasemide group included significantly more cats with recurrent episodes of CHF (52%) that the control group (19%). CONCLUSIONS This case series demonstrates that torasemide can be used in cats with spontaneous CHF. This therapeutic interest needs to be confirmed by prospective clinical trials.

Abstract
Background The left atrium (LA) is an important prognostic parameter in cardiac pathologies of cats. Its size is currently measured in one-dimensional methods, while human medicine considers two- and three-dimensional echocardiography as standard. The objectives of this study were to compare monoplane, biplane, triplane and real-time three dimensional echocardiography for volumetric measurement of the left atrium in healthy cats and establish a reference interval for further studies on cats with heart disease. Additionally, the influence of age, sex and weight on left atrial volume (LAV) was tested. Results One dimensional monoplane Simpson method of discs (SMOD) in the right parasternal four chamber view (r4) and the left apical 2 chamber view (l2) as well as biplane SMOD had no significant difference for left atrial maximum volume (LAMax). They can be used as equivalent in future studies and one common reference range was set up (1.96 ± 0.54 ml). Those three methods produced significantly higher volumes than triplane echocardiography (RTTPE) and real time three dimensional echocardiography (RT3DE) using TomTec® software. LA volumetry with RTTPE and RT3DE-TomTec™ was more feasible than expected, but low RT3DE image quality was the main reason for excluding patients. Neither age nor weight had an influence on LA volume in healthy cats. Male LAV results were only slightly, but in 2D and RTTPE significantly higher than those of female cats with a range of + 10.46% to + 19.58%. Conclusions Monoplane, biplane, triplane and real-time three dimensional echocardiography were feasible for LA volumetry in healthy cats and showed acceptable intra- and interobserver variability. One common LAMax reference range for monoplane r4, l2 and biplane SMOD was set up. Raw data can be used for LA volumes and does not need to be correlated with the cat’s weight or age. Male cats have only slightly but significantly larger atria than females in 2D and RTTPE. Therefore, under reservation, also sex related limit values were defined.

Abstract
Disopyramide reduces the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) pressure gradient and improves symptoms in humans with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM). However, the efficacy of disopyramide in cats has not been reported. We treated a cat with HOCM with carvedilol and disopyramide cotherapy and monitored the changes in LVOT flow velocity and N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) concentration. A 10-month-old neutered male Norwegian Forest cat was referred with a moderate systolic cardiac murmur. Echocardiography revealed thickening of the left ventricular wall, systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve leaflets, and turbulent aortic flow in the LVOT at systole. The LVOT flow velocity was 5.6 m/s. The plasma NT-proBNP concentration exceeded 1,500 pmol/L. The cat was diagnosed with HOCM and the β-blocker carvedilol was started and gradually increased to 0.30 mg/kg, bid. After 57 days, the LVOT flow velocity (4.8 m/s) and plasma NT-proBNP concentration (870 pmol/L) had decreased but remained elevated. Therefore, disopyramide was added at 5.4 mg/kg po bid and increased to 10.9 mg/kg po bid after 22 days. After 141 days of carvedilol and disopyramide treatment, the systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve leaflets had disappeared and the LVOT flow velocity and plasma NT-proBNP concentration had decreased to 0.7 m/s and 499 pmol/L, respectively. No adverse effect has been observed during the follow-up. Disopyramide might relieve feline LVOT obstruction after only partial response to a beta-blocker. Further large-scale studies are required to investigate the efficacy and safety of disopyramide use in cats with moderate to severe HOCM.

Abstract
Cardiomyopathies are a heterogeneous group of myocardial disorders of mostly unknown etiology, and they occur commonly in cats. In some cats, they are well‐tolerated and are associated with normal life expectancy, but in other cats they can result in congestive heart failure, arterial thromboembolism or sudden death. Cardiomyopathy classification in cats can be challenging, and in this consensus statement we outline a classification system based on cardiac structure and function (phenotype). We also introduce a staging system for cardiomyopathy that includes subdivision of cats with subclinical cardiomyopathy into those at low risk of life‐threatening complications and those at higher risk. Based on the available literature, we offer recommendations for the approach to diagnosis and staging of cardiomyopathies, as well as for management at each stage.

Abstract
Background Restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM) is a common primary cardiomyopathy of cats. However, little information is available regarding prognostic variables in large populations of cats with RCM. Objectives To characterize the epidemiological, clinical, and echocardiographic features of cats with RCM and to document their survival times and risk factors for cardiac death (CD). Animals Ninety‐two cats with RCM. Methods Retrospective study. Diagnosis of RCM was based on echocardiographic and Doppler criteria. Median survival time to CD and adjusted hazard ratios (HR) were estimated by the Kaplan‐Meier method and multivariate Cox models, respectively. Results The feline population (median age [interquartile range], 8.6 years [4.1‐12.4]; body weight, 4.0 kg [3.3‐4.7]) included 83 cats (90%) with the myocardial RCM form and 9 (10%) with the endomyocardial fibrosis RCM form. Most RCM cats (64/92, 70%) were symptomatic at the time of diagnosis, with dyspnea related to congestive heart failure in 57 of 64 cats (89%). The median survival time of the 69 cats with the myocardial RCM form and available follow‐up was 667 days (range, 2‐3710 days) considering CD. Independent of age, biatrial enlargement, and arrhythmias, increase of the left atrium (LA)‐to‐aorta (Ao) ratio (hazard ration [HR], 2.5 per 0.5‐unit increase; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.5‐4.2; P < .001) and presence of severe LA enlargement (end‐diastolic LA : Ao ≥2; HR, 3.4; 95% CI, 1.3‐8.7; P = .01) were significantly associated with shorter time to CD. Conclusions and Clinical Importance Cardiac death is common in RCM cats, and LA enlargement seems independently associated with decreased survival time in these cats.
