Correlations and predictors of nursing simulation among Saudi students

Simulation- vs. Didactic-Based Learning for Rehabilitation Nurses Caring for Patients With Autonomic Dysreflexia

PURPOSE

Autonomic dysreflexia (AD) is associated with spinal cord injury, manifesting in symptoms of high blood pressure, bradycardia, headache, diaphoresis, and anxiety. Nurses often manage these symptoms; thus, nursing knowledge of AD is crucial. The purpose of this study was to improve AD nursing knowledge while exploring differences between simulation and didactic learning in nurse education.

DESIGN AND METHODS

This prospective pilot study used two types of learning (simulation vs. didactic) to determine if one was superior to the other regarding nursing knowledge of AD. Nurses were given a pretest, randomized to simulation or didactic learning, and then given a posttest 3 months later.

RESULTS

Thirty nurses were enrolled in this study. Seventy-seven percent of nurses held a BSN degree with an average of 15.75 years in nursing. The mean knowledge scores for AD at baseline for the control (13.9 [2.4]) and intervention (15.5 [2.9]) groups were not statistically different ( p = .1118). The mean knowledge scores for AD after either didactic- or simulation-based education for the control (15.5 [4.4]) and intervention (16.5 [3.4]) groups were not statistically different ( p = .5204).

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Autonomic dysreflexia is a critical clinical diagnosis that requires prompt nursing intervention to prevent threatening consequences. This study focused on how different methods of education best benefited AD knowledge acquisition and how simulation versus didactic learning impacts overall nursing education.

CONCLUSIONS

As a whole, providing nurses with AD education was helpful in improving their understanding of the syndrome. However, our data suggest that both didactic and simulation are equally effective methods to increase AD knowledge.

Self-Confidence, Satisfaction, and Knowledge of Nursing Students with Training in Basic Life Support in Pregnant Women: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background: A flipped classroom integrating clinical simulation has been shown to be effective for basic life support (BLS) competencies in nursing students. Cardiopulmonary arrests (CPAs) in pregnant women have a low incidence but high morbidity and mortality. Current trends show an increasing incidence; however, most official university nursing training curricula do not include specific training modules for BLS in pregnant women. This study aims to know the satisfaction and self-confidence of nursing students with respect to a training intervention regarding in BLS in pregnant women. Additionally, it aims to assess the adequacy of this intervention for acquiring the necessary knowledge on the subject. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the University of Jaen in 2022. Data were collected on sociodemographic factors, previous contact with the topic, and topic knowledge in addition to the use of an SCLS questionnaire to measure satisfaction. Participants took the BLS training (a flipped classroom integrating clinical simulation on this topic) before answering the questionnaire. Results: A total of 136 students participated. The mean score on the BLS questionnaire was 9.10 out of 10 (SD = 1.01). The mean score for the SCLS questionnaire for females was 62.36 (SD = 7.70) and 56.23 (SD = 16.94) for the male group. Age showed a statistically significant association with SCLS score: the score decreased with an increase in age (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The flipped classroom, integrating simulation for BLS in pregnant women, improves self-confidence, satisfaction, and knowledge on the topic.

Filipino nursing students' use of low-cost simulators during the COVID-19 pandemic: A summative content analysis of YouTube videos

This study examined Filipino nursing students' use of household materials as low-cost simulators and how they aid in online return demonstrations. Summative content analysis guided this study. We collected uploaded YouTube videos (n = 14) depicting Filipino nursing students using low-cost simulators in their skills demonstration. We used Bengtsson's approach to content analysis to analyze the data. Four themes of low-cost simulators were identified: home and hardware, health and beauty, creative articles, and entertainment. The categories under home and hardware were tools, containers, furniture, and packaging. Health and beauty low-cost simulators were toiletries and medical supplies. Creative articles included fabrics, clothing accessories, and stationeries. Entertainment low-cost-simulators had toys and computer accessories. During the COVID-19 pandemic, our research uncovered home equipment employed as low-cost simulators to help nursing students' online simulation of skills demonstration. We recommend further investigation of whether students learned using low-cost simulators.

Best Educational Techniques in High-Fidelity Simulation According to Nursing Students-Adaptation and Validation of the Educational Practices Questionnaire (EPQ)

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the best educational techniques used during high-fidelity simulations in training nursing students and to introduce the Polish version of the Educational Practices Questionnaire (EPQ) scale after its cultural adaptation and determination of its psychometric properties. The research group was composed of 361 second- and third-year nursing students in the licentiate program. The Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficients for the adapted tool were 0.90 for the EPQ-PO (presence of educational techniques) subscale and 0.93 for the EPQ-IO subscale (importance of educational techniques). Additionally, the model fit rates in the CFA and EFA (as indicators of theoretical validity) proved to be high enough for the tool to be successfully used in scientific research. Preliminary results are also presented; the mean value of the response for the entire EPQ scale for both the PO and IO sections was M = 4.3, SD ± 0.90. The students in the study rated the opportunity for collaboration with other students and for working jointly on a given clinical situation very highly at M = 4.5, SD ± 0.70. The analysis of the scores of the individual scales and subscales of the EPQ showed statistically significant differences in results obtained for such variables as gender, place of residence, and year of studies.

Maintaining Clinical Training Continuity during COVID-19 Pandemic: Nursing Students' Perceptions about Simulation-Based Learning

Background: Simulation-based learning (SBL) in nursing education is an innovative pedagogical approach that has significantly improved nursing education. Adopting SBL provides a controlled environment for meeting educational objectives without the risk of harm to real patients. Given that social distancing is required during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, SBL is a suitable alternative to clinical training for nursing students to learn and acquire the required clinical competencies. The study aimed to describe the effectiveness of SBL as a complete substitute for clinical experience from the perspective of students. This cross-sectional descriptive survey investigated students’ perceptions regarding the description of the effectiveness of SBL in four nursing colleges at four different universities across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Settings: Four nursing colleges at four different universities across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Participants included nursing students who attended simulation sessions. Data were collected by distributing a self-administrated online questionnaire, the Modified Simulation Effectiveness Tool (SET-M), which is a 19-item. Results: Approximately two-thirds of the participants were in their third (30.4%) and fourth (44.5%) academic year. The highest student presentation was for Site 1 (39.5%) and Site 2 (32.5%). Significant differences existed in all domains according to sex and university (p ≤ 0.001). There was a significant difference in relation to the level of agreement for pre-briefing, scenario, and debriefing domains (<0.001). Conclusions: SBL is a valuable teaching strategy that enhances nursing students’ self-awareness, self-confidence, clinical performance, and efficiency in performing procedures with considerable gender variation. Female students had more positive perceptions toward simulation effectiveness.
